The Call o' The Sea

DM Rob - The Call o' The Sea
Thursday January 30th, 2014 4:41:03 AM

The party settle in for the night. Most enjoy the comfort of the inn, however Zeoll prefers to enjoy what nature offers.

A short stroll north of the inn Zeoll spies a densely thick copse of ash trees. All of the trees are drooping and weeping in the heavy rains. A full 75 feet across, the grove is far too healthy and far too well tended to be mere chance. Clearly, this grove is something the people of Gullport take very seriously.

Zeoll takes to one tree and climbs to a suitable branch and settles in for the night.

*** Everyone is awarded 1200xp for completion of this scene ***

The night drags on. The storm does not ease, and the sound of the rain might have been soothing if not for the thunder claps that regularly sound. Eventually though, sleep does come to those that seek it.

Midway through what would be the 2nd watch you blink yourself awake ... what is it that has disturbed your slumber, you wonder? Not the sounds of the storm -- you had actually gotten used to such noises aboard the Lionfish (storms at sea ARE relatively common, after all), so that isn't it. But, then...

Slowly ... gradually ... a new sound penetrates the pounding of the rain and the howling of the winds. Barely audible at first, it resolves itself into an alien, high-pitched keening. It resounds with loss, with sadness -- the lament of a mother who has lost her children or of the sailor stranded far from home. It echoes from over the waves and grows ever louder until the storm has receded into the background. It fills your ears, insinuates itself through your mind and your soul, until you can think and dream of almost nothing else.

It is not beautiful. It is not comforting. And yet you find yourself overcome with an almost irresistible urge ... to follow ...

(If Sam wakes from the strange sound)

Sam's eyes open as the sound penetrates his typically solid sleep. Being a "sound expert", he does his best to determine its origin or type. If the sound seems atypical, he groggily climbs out of bed and wakes Terser.

Perception=20

(If the sound doesn't wake him)

Sam continues sleeping.

OOC: Sam - and everyone else - wake up. The sound fills everyone's ears and heads

Jozhur is on watch when he hears the noise. He slowly walks down the hall and heads downstairs.

Terser (Warren G) [22/13/19 -- CMD 23 -- HP 60/60 (raging 84/84)]
Thursday January 30th, 2014 11:48:03 AM

Though he doesn't recall the details as well as he would like, Terser knows that he doesn't like being compelled. It has happened before and could have led to grave consequences if he succumbed. He sees no target for his fury, but he is ready to flip it on at a moment's notice.

He sees that Sam has also been awakened by the strange sound (or so he assumes, as the lucky gnome almost always sleeps soundly through the night). Any idea what that noise is, Sam? Seems something like your singing, but I can't imagine where it's coming from... Perhaps we should check on the others.

Terser shoulders his glaive and goes to see if any of the friendly folks from the night before have also been affected. note: Terser sleeps in his armor, courtesy of the endurance feat.

Spire slowly opens his eyes, swinging his legs out of bed and standing up slowly. WIthout looking at Magana or Aexana, he opens the door and begins slowly making his way downstairs.

Magana (Craig) [AC19] [HP 71 of 71]

Magana wakes, pushes her pallet away from the door, and goes looking for the source of the sound, leaving her gear behind.

Sam (David W): 14/12/13 -- CMD 13 -- HP 42/42

As Sam and Terser head towards the sound, Sam watches for signs that he or his brother are being affected by a sound effect. If so, he will immediately start a countersong.

As the unnatural sound fills Coer's head he wakes and collects his belongings. It fills him with sadness yet he leaves his room and sees his friends are also awake.

We should follow the sound. Perhaps they need help. Coer says, thinking out loud.

Kane' Ma'Kai (SteveK) AC13/ T13/ F10/ CMD 17) HP 47/47
Thursday January 30th, 2014 4:45:45 PM

Kane's dreams become reality as the sound doesn't stop upon waking. "They need help?" he mumbles in echo to his Captain. So Kane' snatches his backpack that contains his healers kit before following Coer out the door.

A little persistent voice drives inside his head... who needs help?, and Kane' tries to understand the wisdom of the question.

Aexana dreams pleasant dreams of daring voyages at sea when suddenly, while giving orders to the crew or Taurs, she hears an eerie sound ringing in her ears... she looks around the deck that suddenly seems to change shape to something that resembles a bed... the noise keeps bothering here and makes her wonder if the sound is real or just in her head...
As he slowly opens her eyes she sees Magana and Spire sneak out the room with a weird look on their faces.

"That noise!?! Aex thinks as she tries to block her ears with her pillow... "by Maab what's causing all this?? Am I loosing it??

Aexana hops out of bed. She's not wearing her armor nor any boots as she strumples down the stairs to see where the others are going and where the noise comes from...

"That's not natural!? Can't be! Can it...???" the Gnome thinks as she racks her brain to realise what this all is...

Zeoll hears an odd sound, that wakes him midway through the night.

"Some midnight haunting plagues us, I deem," he mutters to himself, unroosting from his bough, seeing as no one could sleep through this.

He is reminded of the calls and magic of the fey -- the keening of sirens, the cries of the kelpies. He tries to listen and determine if the sound may have a fey origin.

Knowledge Nature and Knowledge Planes are both +7 checks for Zeoll ... 19 and 22 (please ignore the extra rolls -- stupid internets!).

Zeoll heads back toward the inn, hoping to find his friends.

DM Rob - The Call o' The Sea
Friday January 31st, 2014 5:16:27 AM

The rooms currently contain:
Room #1: Aexana, Spire & Magana
Room #2: Coer & Jozhur & Kane
Room #3: Sam & Terser
Tree #1: Zeoll

Sam and Terser look to each other. They agree that the best course of action would be to check on the others. You know, just in case. Being Scab hardened veterans not much can scare these two. Sam looks over his brother dwarf and can see no signs of any enchantment.... yet.

Coer and Kane both agree that this deserves investigation. Being on watch, Jozhur was closest to the door when the sound came. He has wordlessly opened it and has started walking slowly out.

Aexana watches as Spire and Magana get up and leave, curiously leaving a number of their items behind. They too are walking slowly but together. To her knowledge this sound is almost certainly not natural.

Outside the doors of their rooms it looks like a number of people have woken from the sound.

Terza is tugging on the shirt of one of her guards "Karin? Karin, where are you going?". Both Terza and 'Karin' are in their night garments. Not your average pirate gear, even their night clothes are detailed, intricate, and obviously expensive.

Captain Creel and his two men are already walking towards the door. They still wear the ale stained clothes they wore that evening.

Captain Phen is standing behind his two men "Oi! Where are you two off to?". He gives one of his men a shove, but receives no response or reaction. Phen furrows his brow.

Except for Zeoll...
Perception DC00 Highlight to display spoiler: {Sure are a lot of people out tonight. Must all be going to investigate the sound}
Perception DC10 Highlight to display spoiler: {Terza's guard, Captain Creel and his men, and both of Captain Phen's men all have the same blank expression on their faces. They are all slowly shambling towards the door}
Perception DC15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Uh-oh... Jozhur, Spire and Magana have the same expression and they too are walking towards the door}

-----------------

Zeoll awakens outside - dripping wet and very cold. The sound is foreign to his taur ears. No fey he knows of could/would make this sound. Very peculiar and certainly worthy of looking into. He hops down from his branch and starts to walk back to the inn.

As he trudges back he has to wipe the rain from his eyes to see clearly. He has no torch or means to see in the dark, so relies as best he can on the lights in the windows to help navigate. The strong wind and thick mud continue to make movement challenging. The lightning flashes across the sky and he does get a better view of his surroundings...

What Zeoll sees (OOC: Only Cayzle should have access to view the link)

The tavern is maybe another 30ft away.

Sam (David W): 14/12/13 -- CMD 13 -- HP 42/42  d20+8=10 ; d20+11=29 ;

As Sam observes the men, he immediately realizes that his initial fears might have come to pass. (Perception=10)

Sam quickly begins singing to try to counter the effects.
"Men now listen, steel your minds.
If you don't your brains will melt.
If you turn against us you will find,
We'll have to hit you in the skull with the butt of a weapon."
(perform:sing=24 for countersong)

It dawns on the gnome that singing is required for using his countersong ability. Being more of a talking, dancing, and acting type of bard, his song doesn't rhyme, but still is pleasing to the ear.

Ooc to DM: Would like to switch acting for singing when allowed.

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC18 - HP33)
Friday January 31st, 2014 11:34:44 AM

OOC: Post in spoilers since Zeoll is on his own ...

DM Only Please Highlight to display spoiler: {Zeoll sees a number of victims walking toward the sea. This sound may not be fey, but its intent is no surprise. He is glad that none of the victims are his friends. On the other hand, if he heads to the inn, these poor souls may come to a bad end before they can be saved!

But what can he do? would a calm emotions end the compulsion? He could command them back, but each casting can only stop one person, and that for a short short time. Even if this old liontaur managed to pounce and grapple one, and drag him back, that would only be one.

In a flash, Zeoll thinks about the crew of the Lionfish, and fears the worst! They were on the water, and that can't be good!

And in his heart, Zeoll quails. The creatures making this sound are surely out in the water. Zeoll cannot swim, and shares his race's aversion to water. "Please don't need me to swim," he says in a silent prayer."

Really, he thinks, the only way to stop this is to stop the singing. That means confronting the singer. Or singers. Well, nothing for it, then. The liontaur runs past the sleepwalking victims down to the shore, looking out into the waters, looking for the creatures making this sound. As he moves, he draws a tanglefoot bag. If he sees a child or other innocent, at least he can maybe glue one victim down and save one soul.

OOC: Rob, presumably Zeoll saved vs the effect, and so his Cradled Spread the Word +2 bonus was used, right?

OOC: No mage armor means Zeoll's AC is now 18.

You could have ended that "If you turn against us you will find, Terser choking you out with his belt" haha.

Despite his jest, Terser can tell something is wrong some of the Lionfish's crew, and intercepts Jozhur, Spire and Magana, trying to shake some sense into them. If he is unable to bring someone back to their senses and Sam's song fails, he will instead block the door of the inn so they can't get out.

Kane's wise mind immediately sees the danger. "Enchantment!", he exclaims, and moves quickly to Jozhur, shaking him by the shoulders. "Snap out, Jozhur Sir, this siren call is not for you."

Kane' is thankful for Sam, using his performance to diminish the more enchanting one. Now they need ot give the others a chance to wake up.

Aexana follows Spire and Magana and bumps into Terza as she's pulling het guard's clothes... "What's this Mylady Terza... this unnatural sound seems to lure the weak of mind outside... Terza Ma'am, tonight we forget any quarrels between out ship's crew. We need to see what this is all about... I'm Aexana of the Lionfish by the way. Pleased to meet you"

The little Gnome follows her friends outise, hopefully accompanied by Lady Terza. After all... it seems likely all those bewitched are going towards the same source.

Spire ignores Terser and Sam as he makes for the front door. When he reaches it and sees it blocked by Terser, the elf still tries to open it. Looking down at the dwarf with a glazed look in his eyes, the wizard mumbles, "I have to go..." Unfortunately for the frail elf, Terser is much stronger than him, and can likely keep the door shut against his attempts. After a few pulls, Spire begins looking for another exit.

"Maybe they'll take us to the source of the problem. If we follow, whoever is responsible will assume we are under the spell too. If anything puts them in danger, we'll tackle them. I'm going to disappear and scout ahead. It's unlikely that the spell will affect me."

If no objections are made and Terser lets the group through, Sam will cast invisibility on himself and scout ahead.

"Just what we need... and in the middle of the night too!" Grumbles Coer, who would like a good night's sleep.

"I agree we follow, and tie them down if needed" Coer pulls a length of rope from his pack and attaches it to his belt for easy access.

DM Rob - The Call o' The Sea
Monday February 3rd, 2014 6:33:11 AM

Sam suspects some sort of mind control is at work and begins a counter-song. He does his best but even his song cannot drown out the noise penetrating everyone's ears. The people in front of Sam continue their zombie-like shuffle towards the door.

Terser notices that something is wrong not only with the other crew, but with some of the party. He shakes Spire but his actions do little. The dwarf pushes past and tries to brace the door.

Kane' tries the same with Jozhur, shaking him by the shoulders. Jozhur's eyes are glazed and fail to register the elf before him. He continues his shuffle, walking around Kane'.

Aexana tries to make pleasantries with Terza "Yes, yes, nice to meet you too but I think we have more pressing things to attend to. I agree, let's forget any quarrels and get these people back to their senses". She takes a firm grasp of her bodyguards sleeve, but he yanks free and continues his determined walk.

Between them, Spire and Magana easily overpower Terser. Magana's strength, size and determination are just too much for the dwarf. They make their way out into the storm.

The Elfbloods and Pirates of Jack slowly follow along. "Must go..." one mumbles as he pushes past Captain Phen.

Coer agrees to follow, but readies a rope - just in case.

For Zeoll this is the stuff of nightmares. Alone, cold, and wet. No idea how the crew of the Lionfish are faring. More people in trouble than he is able to single-handedly save. Nevertheless, he steels himself and begins moving to save as many as he can.

As Zeoll moves, Magana, Spire and Jozhur come into view with the rest of the party shortly behind.

The rest of the party can now barely make out what Zeoll has seen:
Gullport Horror scene

--------------------------
OOC:

@Sam - You can take your casting action this 'round'. We're in combat rounds now people - things are getting serious :)

Thought this map may help things for everyone...
Map

The party slept at the Turning Tide inn/tavern - Position #1.
Zeoll slept in the trees - Position #4.
The Lionfish is docked - Position #7
Everyone is now at the 'star'. Zeoll in front with Magana, Spire and Jozhur next, followed by the rest of the 'zombies' and everyone else - all headed towards the docks

-------------------------------------

NOTE: The following conditions exist outdoors for the time being...

MOVEMENT: Because of the heavy rainfall, the roads within Gullport (they're all dirt roads) have become rivers of mud, reducing movement to one-half speed.

SEEING & HEARING: The thunderstorm lashing the place has darkened the sky and loosed thunder all around the hamlet, so all Perception checks (as well as any tactics that rely on being able to clearly see and/or hear) suffer a -4 circumstance penalty; the penalty is -6 when in the vicinity of the beach/direct waterfront, thanks to the additional roar of the waves crashing against the rocky shore or cliff face. The range for seeing or hearing anything is cut in half.

LIGHT SOURCES: Thanks to the extremely dark storm clouds, the party will need to have their own sources of light if they are to see through the rain effectively. The rain and wind automatically extinguish any unprotected flames, and even has a 50% chance of extinguishing protected flames (such as lanterns).

WIND EFFECTS: Ranged weapon attacks and Fly skills are at a -4 penalty. Small (or smaller) creatures are unable to move forward against the force of the wind unless they succeed on a DC 10 Strength check (if on the ground) or a DC 20 Fly skill check if airborne.

[OOC: Assuming Zeoll is at least 20 ft away from his friends at the start of the round. If a friends is within 20 ft this round, may need to drop the tanglefoot bag, get out the scroll, cast and deliver this round.]

Zeoll does not see any children among the victims, and his heart is glad for that small mercy, anyway. But he sees some friends coming down the street from the tavern, coming onto the scene just after he does. And look! Jozhur is affected by the compulsion! And Magana! And Spire!

Zeoll takes inventory. How many tanglefoot bags does he have? Just one! And it is in his hand. But then he thinks of something else in his inventory! Protection from Evil scrolls! Maybe the abjuration will give his friends a chance to resist the compulsions!

OOC, per the spell: "Second, the subject immediately receives another saving throw (if one was allowed to begin with) against any spells or effects that possess or exercise mental control over the creature (including enchantment [charm] effects and enchantment [compulsion] effects, such as charm person, command, and dominate person. This saving throw is made with a +2 morale bonus, using the same DC as the original effect. If successful, such effects are suppressed for the duration of this spell."

The liontaur is only moving at 20. So this round he puts away his tanglefoot back and gets out his scroll. Next round, if any of his friends have come closer and are within 20 ft, he'll read the scroll and touch a friend. If he has a choice, he'll cast it on Spire, who likely has the best will save, and who may have some magic to save others.

The wind howls louder, like spirits of the undead about to feast. The rain quickly drenches clothes that moments ago were dry, and the lightning and thunder regularly crack. Far to the north a lightning bolt strikes the ground atop a hill. If there were a god of lightning in the Wold he would be laughing.

Sam casts a spell to help illuminate the surrounds. (Per notes: "Small (or smaller) creatures are unable to move forward against the force of the wind unless they succeed on a DC 10 Strength check (if on the ground) or a DC 20 Fly skill check if airborne." You'll need to make a check if you want to move with the party)

Aexana transforms from a humble little gnome into, well, a "humble" large gorilla! Looking about she can see the rooftops will probably be fairly easy for her to traverse once she gets up there.

Four, maybe five people are ahead of the party. Only men and women can be seen and most are still in their nightclothes. Fortunately no children look to be amongst those walking towards the docks.

Jozhur staggers forward, the voice of the ocean in his ears. And then there is silence. Kane' has cast a spell permanently deafening his friend. Jozhur can no longer hear any instructions, so can do nought but follow the last one he received - and he keeps on staggering forward.

Zeoll switches plan on seeing his friends approaching. Magana is drawing near and she is clearly under some influence. Zeoll swaps his tanglefoot bag for scroll.

Zeoll, Magana and Spire are now at the front of the pack and nearing the docks.

Terser does his best to keep up, but his dwarf legs weren't made for running in mud. Had the situation been under a granite mountain he surely would shine. His dwarven darkvision is at full range, though the rain and wind do hamper his senses somewhat (OOC: No light source needed for you, but you do still take the -4 penalty to perception)

Coer pulls his lantern out but the blasted thing refuses to light. Not knowing where the enthralled are heading he simply follows along.

The three Pirates of Jack continue with their slow determined walk. Terza and Phen stand by the entrance to the inn and progress no further. "Karin! Karin!" Terza shouts clenching her fists tightly. Her other bodyguard holds her shoulder tightly, preventing her from going further. Phen has drawn a weapon but makes no attempts to pursue his two men.

Up ahead Zeoll, Spire and Terser see a dreadful sight. The enthralled are walking voluntarily into the water and allowing themselves to drown! One would think that emersing themselves in water might bring them to their senses, but this does not look to be the case. Already two bodies float lifeless on the surface.

The docks are only 80 or so feet away from Zeoll, Magana and Spire.

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC18 - HP33)
Tuesday February 4th, 2014 12:25:35 PM

Zeoll reads his Protection from Evil scroll, careful to hold the parchment steady in the wind. Then he touches Spire. He says a prayer to Maab that the wizard will get a new save, and be saved. [OOC: If you do get a new save, Spire, it is with a +2 morale bonus! And if you have a hero point -- use it!]

In the meantime, Magana is moving 30 ft forward this round -- and Zeoll cannot draw a scroll, read it, and reach Magana before she will walk into the sea. So he moves 20 ft forward and draws his tanglefoot bag. Maybe if he can tangle her, that will slow her down. Or maybe at the stony dockside he will be able to glue her down!

Actions recap: Cast spell on Spire, move 20 ft, drawing tanglefoot bag.

DM Rob - The Call o' The Sea
Wednesday February 5th, 2014 6:04:36 AM

Things become all the more dire as the party realise the situation some are now in.

Sam pushes forward with amazing speed. Usually it is scurrying halflings you have to watch out for, but this gnome can move! (OOC: New PCs start with 3 hero points. As Sam and Terser though have migrated from an existing game I will rule you start with either 3 hero points, or, however many you had in Forged before it closed - whichever is higher)

Aexana Gorilla takes to the roof tops in an attempt to over-take the bogged down party. Her newfound strength and grip allows her to pull her form up quickly, and hurdling over the city rooftops.

Magana smiles as she sees her destination. He calls for her and she answers. Before Magana can take her first step however she falls face first into the muddy ground, her legs taken out from under her by Terser! The dwarf has wielded his glaive with perfect accuracy.

Jozhur too can see his target. The water looks so... welcoming. He begins to move but immediately finds himself entangled in netting - courtesy of Kane'. Jozhur struggles but is unable to free himself nor move closer to the watery depths (OOC: Please make a note in your header that you are deafened)

Zeoll reads his scroll and makes a quick decision to cast it on Spire (Will save please Spire). The taur plans to move to keep pace with Magana but sees her fall first. He instead draws his tanglefoot bag (OOC: Can you draw a tanglefoot bag as a free action or as part of another move action? Not sure. To allow you to keep pace with the party - and since Magana was tripped - I've taken the liberty of interpreting the best course of action was to draw the bag instead of moving)

Thanks to the heroic actions of the party, the entranced party members have not managed to get closer to the docks this round. That said, the three Pirates-of-Jack (including Captain Creel), two of the Elf Bloods, and Tezra's bodyguard are all still walking. They have caught up to the bulk of the party and don't look like stopping.

Sam and Coer are now closest to the docks, with Zeoll, Spire, Magana, Jozhur, and Terser close behind, and Aexana quickly gaining on the rooftop.

Sam and Coer can hear the repetitive sound of the waves crashing against the dockside area. The rain comes at you on an almost sideways angle, and stings your skin.

--------------------------------------
OOC: Folks, when party actions occur simultaneously I try to interpret them in the best interests of the party. For example, Terser trips Magana before she can get any closer to the sea. Post your actions as you wish and I'll try to fit them in. Cheers!

Spire comes to and finds that he is no longer in his bed, and for some reason is wandering about in the rain.

Aexana drops from the rooftop behind Magana and touches her with an ape sized hand, bestowing the wisdom of owls upon her.

Magana regains her footing, only to receive a blow to the head for her troubles. Terser has the taur in his sights and uses the broad side of his glaive to slap Magana between her horns.

Terser splits Magana's lip, and as she blinks in the rain comes to the sudden realisation that she is under attack! Never mind that she has found herself for some reason out of bed, she is being attacked by that dwarf from the tavern! Magana assumes her battle stance and prepares to defend herself.

Zeoll prepares to throw a tanglefoot bag at Magana, but he notices her eyes lack the glazed-over appearance they did only moments ago (OOC: Your call if you still want to throw it this round, or even at a different target)

Coer pushes ahead, determined to create a minotaur sized wall and stop any from making it to the cold, murky water. Rain lashes Coer from the front, as spray from the waves on the docks coats his back.

Jozhur struggles weakly on the net that encases him. Kane' casts a Dispel on Jozhur, but the rogue continues to fight against the net.

Last round...

Zeoll throws his tanglefoot bag at Pirate of Jack #3. The bag flies true, exploding with sticky resin all over the hapless pirate. The pirate is entangled in the gooey strands and can only limply move forward (PoJ #3 is entangled and reduced to half speed - one-quarter speed in the mud, which the goo did not adhere to)

Current round...

Sam tries once again to move in this weather, but the strong winds and thick mud make movement too difficult for the gnome. He makes the observation that blows to the head seems to snap people out of the trance, so takes the wise move of causing some damage across a wide area. The concussive sound burst created by Sam has the desired effect. There are now 4 very confused looking men standing about in the rain.

Terser offers a weapon to Magana - perhaps a peace offering for splitting her lip wide open. The large taur refuses, and instead moves towards the front of the group preparing to tackle any who try to push past her.

Aexana Ape (Ape-ana?) looks about for who might still not be in full control of their body. She spies Karin - Tezra's bodyguard - standing very still. Sam's Hold Person spell is still in effect, but for how long? Not wanting to risk it, Aexana moves up to Karin and envelops him in a gorilla grapple. (Grapple check = Auto pass vs a paralyzed person)

Coer holds his ground at the front of the pack. The wind has blown out his lantern, so he does his best to rely on sound as the group of people approach. Should anyone get too close, one can only imagine he will beat some sense into them.

Kane' has come to the same realisation as Sam - hit 'em and hit 'em hard! He breaks out his sap and begins to pound away at Jozhur, but the rogue's armor is just too thick.

Jozhur's day hasn't gotten any better. Now not only is he cold, wet, deaf, entangled, and following orders to happily drown himself, but he is also getting hit by a sap. At least any damage done to him has to be healed by Kane', so he has that going for him.

Spire begins concentrating on casting a spell to summon a celestial constrictor snake. (Per rules on summoning, it takes 1rnd to cast a summoning spell and it will appear & act at the start of your next turn)

Pirate of Jack #1 - who happens to be Captain Creel - is still in his zombie-like state. He begins to move forward, heading straight towards the docks. In doing so, he provokes an AoO from not 1, but 5 people! PoJ#2 misses his captain, but Aexana, Sam, Zeoll, and Magana each get to take a crack at him! (AC17 to hit, guys).

Zeoll reaches out a wet paw to swat at the passing Pirate of Jack. As if hearing the dirtiest joke of his life, Captain Creel stops and bursts into a fit of laughter (Touch attack vs AC15: Hit!)

Karin is unable to break Sam's Hold Person spell. He remains unmoving, and grappled by Aexana.

"Back to the Inn!" one of the Elfbloods cries over the howl of the wind, and turns tail out of there. The other Elfblood and one of the Pirates of Jack follows him. The other Pirate of Jack looks conflicted, but eventually decides he should at least have another go at saving his captain. He moves up behind Captain Creel and gives him a half-hearted slap on the back. It does nothing to break the effect (Attack vs AC17: 8 = Miss!)

Zeoll winces inside as he is barely able to bat at the pirate with his feeble paw. He remembers a day long ago when he wielded a two-handed sword in Domi's name, when his paws dealt killing blows. Alas, for the toll of age.

Shrugging, and having swiped twice at the pirate captain, Zeoll deems him set, and also sees that Jozhur and Karin are well-tended. Although in his heart he fears mightily that it is too late, he runs to the Lionfish! Or at least, wades through mud as fast as he can!

Monday February 10th, 2014 4:16:40 AM

All who were enthralled have now come to their senses.

Karin takes a few steps back from the ape in front of him. Imagine waking from a dream to find yourself in the rain, in the middle of a storm, and there is an ape in front of you. Karin keeps his cool however. "Tezra! Where's Tezra?!" Duty obviously calls and without so much as a thankyou to the party he starts off at quick pace back towards the inn "Come find us there when you're done!" he calls back in the rain.

Captain Creel may have less honor and more a sense of self-preservation as he too heads off quickly back towards the inn.

Zeoll and Coer come to the same realisation. If those on the land were affected by the sound, what of the crew of the Lionfish?

The group make their way to the docks, with a variety of light to lead the way. It's hard to convey the situation to the deaf Jozhur, but the urgency is not lost on him and he soon clearly understands what is going on.

Zeoll looks into the water and sees a number of bodies being tossed about by the waves. Noone is calling for help, there are no arms waving in the air, and noone trying to swim. It is a truly grim sight. The one saving grace is that none are children.

The group are about a third of the way to the Lionfish, when a light appears in the distance. How distant is anyone's guess in this weather. Is it a small light very close, or a large light very far away?

Everyone is on edge. Could this be yet another threat to the group? Tula's face dimly lit by the lantern she is holding is enough to calm most. In her other hand she holds her short-sword. Trailing behind her is the rest of the Lionfish crew.

"Thank the gods!" she sighs in a rare show of emotion "There have been some eerie things happening on the ship Cap'n"

Tula then explains that a mysterious sound awoke the entire crew, and they were forced to "slap some sense" into Horace and Too-Elt - both of whom were doing their best to go overboard. In the dim lantern light, Horace (the poor little goblin) is nursing his jaw as Too-Elt (the sullen human) rubs his cheek. Tommy Teeth nurses his knuckles.

"Beggin' your pardon Cap'n, but I think it might be safer for the crew to stay on dry land tonight" Tula appears truly concerned for the crew's wellbeing.

There is still no sign of this storm subsiding. Waves are crashing on the docks and the entire Lionfish crew has been drenched by the rain.

Coer gives the nod for the crew to take shelter in the inn for the night. Did he plan on escorting them there?

Zeoll breathes a sigh of relief that the crew are ok. A few bumps and bruises are to be expected on any voyage, and better that than a drowning.

Sam sends lights dancing out over the water, providing light for Aexana to reach a paw in and retrieve one of the corpses. Magana keeps a careful watch, ready for one of the corpses to show "unusual dead body movement". One imagines she is wary of zombies...

The corpse is that of a woman. She looks only very recently deceased and shows no signs of decay. She looks just like a cold, wet, sleeping lady dressed in her night clothes. Terser recognises her as one of the patrons from the tavern earlier in the night.

Jozhur tries to shout over the noise of the storm. If he's having trouble hearing then chances are others are as well. He has never heard such a tale as a noise as the one he heard earlier. Goodness knows though there are enough spells that can control a man's mind.

Kane' is apologetic for his actions earlier. He deafened Jozhur with the best of intentions, but removing the affliction is beyond his talents.

Sam takes a moment to contemplate the sound. How could it be he couldn't counter it? How could it be powerful enough to affect so many people on such a scale? Could it be a number of enchanters working together? Even worse, could it all be the work of one individual? The thought is scary. Such a person - given time - could reshape the Wold. At the back of his mind is one final thought: could it somehow be related to this storm?

Zeoll paces the edge of the docks allowing the spray of the waves to wash over him. His eyes and ears are keen, and he can no longer hear the sound that disturbed his sleep earlier. All he can hear now is the sounds of nature - the waves, the rain, the wind. As well as what he does hear, what he doesn't hear is interesting. No screams or cries. There is noone by the docks calling for loved ones, and there is noone in the water calling for help. Save for the party and crew of the Lionfish, the docks are lifeless.

There are thoughts amongst the group as to how such a sound can be tracked. Perhaps that is something that can discussed indoors? Kane' wishes to return to the relatively dry inn. The Lionfish crew need an escort. Perhaps touching base with the other crews may yield information also?

Sam (David W): 14/12/13 -- CMD 13 -- HP 42/42

Sam shrugs and reports,"I'm baffled. Let's go inside and speak to the other crews. Maybe they have a clue as to what caused this."

Once inside, the drenched bard sits down at a table and pulls out a piece of parchment and his writing supplies. In his neatest writing, he inscribes the following warning:

"If you hear an erie sound,
And your friends are outward bound.
Quickly strike them on the head,
Or you'll find them drowned and dead."

The gnome offers this warning to be posted at the tavern. He encourages the message passed on and accompanied by the story of what happened on this fateful night. Perhaps future deaths can be avoided.

Once he feels that his scribing duties have been fullfilled, Sam speaks generally to the survivors,"Is anyone aware of what caused this disaster? Have you ever heard of such a thing in your travels?"

Magana helps Spire pull bodies from the cold, cold waters. Not because she has some kind of respect for the floating bodies. No, the inhabitants of these empty shells have moved on to another plane. She stays because their families and friends might want to offer their services to Gargul in return for his favor or grace upon their departed. If just one person might be inspired to serve by her efforts, then she in turn has done good service to Him.

Once returned to the Inn, Magana kneels at the hearth to soak up the warmth while she contemplates how close she has been, twice now, to entering a watery grave.

DM Rob - The Call subsides
Wednesday February 12th, 2014 5:51:39 AM

Spire, Aexana and Magana dutifully recover as many corpses as they can reach in the waves. Some are just well out of reach, but they manage to pull in three more bodies - for a total of 4 corpses. Spire knows that different colonies have different ways for honoring their dead. The majority in this region favour burial, he believes. The majority, that is. For this specific island you'd have to ask a local.

Zeoll has his suspicions about the goings on, in particular the victims. He looks over the corpses recovered, and with significant help from Sam and Terser (who had spent more time in the tavern than most) a realisation is made. None of the victims were locals. (OOC: Hero point to Zeoll for this clever observation!) Did the locals have something to do with this? Did they know it was coming? Do they have some sort of immunity? Perhaps the most important of questions - can the locals be trusted?

More questions than answers have been found at the docks. The inn had better provide some insight.

Jozhur and Kane' walk side by side. Jozhur holds no ill will at all for his current situation. Kane' considers different ways that the affliction may be cured.

Terser knocks heavily on the inn door. It takes a moment, but the door is finally opened by one of the Elfblood crew. Behind him sit the other two Elfbloods, the three Pirates of Jack, and the three Shipping Guild emissaries.

The Turning Tide, though warm and dry, is completely absent of staff. None of the waitstaff are there and Piotr is nowhere to be found. There is a large kettle of fish chowder simmering unattended to one side of the kitchen hearth.

The drenched crew of the Lionfish move to dry themselves by the fire, while others look about for a stiff drink. Tula walks the perimeter, her hand still on her sword as she looks out each window.

Sam pens a ballad? Sonnet? Let's call it a "dire warning" to others, as well as some helpful advice should they encounter someone not acting themselves.

Terza and her guards smile on seeing the party. The half-elf reaches out to shake each persons hand for their assistance in returning Karin to her side. He simply smiles and nods, not leaving Terza's side.

Captain Phen of the Elfblood ship begrudgingly acknowledges that he owes the Lionfish crew a debt. You can almost feel the tension he must be under to make such an acknowledgement to the group - in particular to Kane'. Nevertheless, he does so in apparent good faith.

Captain Creel makes no such acknowledgement as he stands to confront the group. "Tell me now - what is going on? What do you know of this? I am Captain Creel of the Pirates of Jack! It is in your best interest to keep me alive. I demand you escort me to my ship immediately!" He is almost trembling. Gone is the man who was willing to taunt and pick fights earlier. Standing in his boots now is a man who only cares about his own survival.

Phen rolls his eyes at the dramatic display.

Terza is more diplomatic "Without knowing what is going on, leaving this inn could prove more hazardous than staying. What's more, with this storm your ship will not be able to safely navigate the rocks. You are welcome to try, but I suggest the safest course may be barricading the doors to this inn and sharing watch until morning"

And, outside, the storm rages on unabated...

Terser continues pounding on the door to the innkeeper's bedroom, barging in if there's no answer. Someone knows what's going on, and I'll bet it's him. Perhaps if the innkeeper lets his patrons get killed off, he can abscond with their belongings? Lucky not all of us were affected. Shame that we couldn't save them all though.

"I agree with Tezra. We should bar the doors until morning then search the town for clues."

Coer picks up a large table and moves it in front of the door.

" i could use some more sleep. Anyone else want to keep watch?

DM Rob - The Call subsides
Thursday February 13th, 2014 6:27:05 AM

Terser pounds on the door to the inn keepers room. There is no answer. Perhaps the man is a heavy sleeper? The dwarf takes it upon himself to enter, perhaps surprised the door is unlocked. Sam is in tow, ready to help pry information from the inn keeper, just in case anything should slip the surly man's mind. Spire follows along as well, recalling his near-visit to the Scab.

The inn keeper's room is modest. A desk, some shelves with assorted knick-knacks. The sheets are pulled aside from his bed. It appears as though someone slept here this evening. For how long though? *BANG* A sudden clap of thunder and flash of lightning ensures you are on edge. Did a shadow just move past the window? No, it must just be your imagination.

Magana has a private word with Captain Creel. What danger does he know of that would make a profit less attractive? "You're, you're joking, right? You saw what just happened. Folks walking out to drown 'emselves. It's not natural. It's a bad omen is what it is." Creel shakes his head and eyes everyone else with suspicion. He leans in closer to Magana "Since we're all stuck here, how about we come to some sort of arrangement. How would you like to sail for me? I could use someone like you. You make sure I sail safely out of here and I can make it worth it for you? Ever captained your own ship before?"

Aexana changes back from ape to gnome - a remarkable transformation for many to see. Does she miss the larger form? The ability to crush a mans windpipe with one grasp?

Kane' finds the time to rid Jozhur of his deafness. The cure? A nice warm bath. The bath, of course, is in a cauldron, but beggars can't be choosers. To Jozhur's dismay he can hear the thunder and rain again. The silence was far more calming for one's nerves.

Coer meanwhile single-handedly picks up a large table and barricades the door with it. Noone will be coming in if he has anything to say about it. Or is it that noone will be leaving? What of the windows? And any others doors? Is the intent just to block the main way in, or to form a bunker?

Terza - ever the diplomat - proposes three watches. That would ensure that each watch had a member of the Shipping Guild, the Pirates of Jack, and the Elfbloods. Phen shrugs, having no care in the matter. Creel is off having a quiet word to Magana.

Keep in mind that you were awoken during second watch last time. Who is yet to rest?

Outside the storm rages on. It's going to be a long night.

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC18 - HP33)  d20+8=13 ;
Thursday February 13th, 2014 7:30:14 AM

[OOC: Ugh! Missed a day! Sorry! ]

Zeoll is sad to abandon his cozy nest in the trees, but since he has actually used none of his first and second level cleric spells, technically it is moot as to whether he spends the night under the stars or no.

Old guy like him would only be up every couple hours anyway to take a pee. Nothing works like it used to when you are Zeoll's age.

And besides, who can sleep? He offers to keep company with anyone who cannot rest, and spends the wee hours singing lullabies and gentle songs about the sun on the green leaves of the Wold's Cradle. He tells funny stories about the fey king, and tries to lift the group's spirits -- especially those who are freaking out. [OOC: Zeoll is renewing his Spread the Word power, for anyone who wants a +2 on their next saving throw and did not already get the bonus once this module!]

Perform Song 13.

Kane' Ma'Kai (SteveK) AC13/ T13/ F10/ CMD 17) HP 47/47
Thursday February 13th, 2014 9:44:24 AM

Kane' is happy that Jozhur is back to the hearing, but very, very uncomfortable to have the Elfblood captain speak to him. He shyly nods his 'you are welcomes' and looks to break contact as soon as possible.

For watches, Kane' will keep the same schedule as planned with the Lionfish. He thinks shared watches among the crews are a very good idea, but will not step up to coordinate with the Elfbloods.

Seeing that no one is there to question, Sam shrugs and heads for his room. Perhaps the innkeeper will return in the morning. The gnome hops back into bed and does his best to sleep as the storm rages on outside.

Terser (Warren G) [22/13/19 -- CMD 23 -- HP 60/60 (raging 84/84)]
Thursday February 13th, 2014 11:30:57 AM

No use trying to track the man in the rain. Perhaps things will be clearer in the morning. Terser heads back to the room with Sam and is soon asleep again.

(Diplomacy 18)

"A generous and tempting offer to be sure, Captain. I am not, however, a sailor, and don't actually even like being out on the open sea at all. But if you will stay here in the common room with everyone until the storm ends, I'll do my best to insure no one comes to harm until it is safe to leave. Deal?"

As Sam tries to fall asleep, a thought occurs to him. He quickly tears out of bed and heads for the door.

"I'll be right back Terser. I'm going to search the innkeeper's room. I'll only be a moment or two. No need to get up."

With that, Sam winks at Terser, hums a tune, and vanishes. The door creaks open and then closed as the invisible bard heads out. Sam heads back to the innkeeper's room as quietly as possible. (Stealth=40 with moving invisibility bonus)

If able to make it back into the room without obstacles, Sam searches the room for clues that might help to explain the mystery at hand. (Perception=20)

If nothing of interest is found Sam makes his way back to the room and reports his findings to Terser. After that, he goes back to sleep.

The building is huge - too many windows to barricade this late in the night.

"The doors will have to do - I will be in my room." Coer is weary and unsettled by the evenings events, even more so now that an alliance of sort has been made with the Elfbloods.

(StevenVdB) Aexana HP 49/49 - AC16/14/13 / +4 vs Giant - CMD 15 / +1 vs Lizard & Goblinoids
Thursday February 13th, 2014 7:01:52 PM

Aex shares Sam's idea as he searches the man's room... she lets Sam thouroughly check the room. Starting to like the ape shapes, Aexana changes into the tiny monkey that helped with the sails aboard the Lionfish.
Being tiny she opens the closeth... finding a cosy place in the closeth, Aexana decides to spend the night in the Inn keepers room. Should he return in a few Aex will probably wake up... and with any luck the Inn keeper will mistake her for a scared little monkey...
