Twas a dark and stormy ... er ... night?

DM Rob - The calm is over. Time for the storm.
Thursday January 16th, 2014 5:41:52 AM

So far, all indications are that this should be a VERY profitable mission: the handbill promised quite a lucrative contract and there have been fair winds blowing the Lionfish on a swift and steady course to Gullport. After a refreshingly uneventful few days of traveling, the crew member called Pinny bellows forth from the crow's nest: "Land ho! Land ho!"

It will now only be a matter of a few hours before the ship anchors at Gullport. And perhaps luckily so.

The cheerful blue skies that have accompanied the voyage to Gullport are very quickly (almost suddenly) obscured by a bank of ominous storm clouds. The ocean once azure now seems a dark abyss with only white froth to indicate the presence of the growing waves. The waves that have gently rocked the ship now seem like small mountains, each one causing the Lionfish to pivot steeply up then just as steeply down.

None of this helps Spire's gastro-intestinal problems.

The expression 'any port in a storm' had better have some merit to it. The seasoned sailors aboard know that a serious storm is brewing and one that the Lionfish would do well not to be out in.

OOC: Perception checks (and any others that come to mind) please folks

Aexana and Coer have the keenest of eyes. From the deck they can make out the land that Pinny spotted from the crows nest. They can tell that the storm clouds that now blot out every last bit of sunlight seemed to have boiled up from the direction of the land that had been spotted. Not the most natural thing in the Wold...

Magana makes her way to center deck and grabs ahold of the mast. She finds it a little easier to balance at this point, and perhaps feels safer away from the rails.

Spire's stomach is now empty and gives him the opportunity to think of what may have caused this. His knowledge of nature tells him that storms are, well, a part of nature. Some just come quicker than others. It certainly wouldn't be unheard of for a storm to catch a ship by surprise.

Between them, Spire and Zeoll could come up with a number of less natural ways for such a storm to develop. There are a number of spells that control weather or wind or water. Then of course there are creatures such as Storm Giants, known to dwell on remote coastlines and tropical islands. Good thing the Lionfish isn't sailing near ... oh. And who knows WHAT creatures may be lurking in the depths of the Wolds oceans!

Aexana wonders whether this could all be an illusion. Unfortunately the salty water that catches in her mouth feels and tastes all too real, as does the persistant rocking of the ship.

Jozhur does his best to rally the crew to the moment, and Tula once again looks to thrive under pressure.

"Batten down! Batten down!" she calls out amongst the growing noise of the storm. She stands next to Jozhur, one hand firmly grasping the ropes.

Pinny is making his way down from the crows nest. The ease in which he handles himself on the ropes makes you wonder whether he is part monkey.

Cato, Too-Elt and Joansie pull on ropes to tighten the sails. The rest of the crew are below deck.

The Lionfish battles the choppy seas, getting closer to shore. The first thing of note is that the coast is rather rocky (OOC: it looks a lot like New England coastal topography), with thick forestation atop the cliffs that abound. You can tell that you've finally reached Gullport because of a tall-ish building atop a steep, rocky hill overlooking the sea--judging from the shape of the building, it's a fair guess that it must be a temple for the tiny town.

The storm is ever intensifying. Loud claps of thunder sound simultaneously with bright flashes of lightning that fork across the sky.

Ahead can be sighted (barely) a small but somewhat sheltered harbor that has six or seven wooden piers built along its shore. It's going to take quite some skill to pilot the ship safely and avoid the rocky outcrops.

One person please to make the Profession Sailor check to steer the Lionfish. Others can aid

DM Rob - Lightning crashes
Saturday January 18th, 2014 5:47:07 AM

Kane' makes a truly heroic effort in guiding the ship past rocky outcrops. His experience on the seas and the aid from his friends allows him to use the waves to his advantage and keep the Lionfish in one piece. That and Coer's tremendous strength makes turning the wheel significantly easier.

Jozhur joins the crew in holding the ropes tightly and pulling them in.

Zeoll's magical aid turns out to be for more useful than his knowledge of sailing.

Aexana becomes suspicious of who or what may be behind this storm. Her questions about the groups intentions look to have been drowned out by the thunder as noone answers.

The ship manages to sail into the small but somewhat sheltered harbor that has six or seven wooden piers built along its shore, and the crew hustles to secure the vessel against the now thundering-and-lightning storm. The relentless downpour of cold, clammy rain makes everything seem to take a lot longer than you'd like, but the Lionfish is safely battened down.

Between the heavy clouds and the endless rain, you might as well be blind. In the occasional flash of lightning, however, as the rain is forced aside by a gust of howling wind, you can just about make out the town along a rocky coastline battered by white-capped swells. From what you can see, the buildings are old and patched, and the roofs are shingled peaks, the far boundary of the settlement surrounded by a copse of gnarled trees.

Just another village, it seems, but something about it sets your teeth on edge and your skin to crawling. But then, perhaps it is just the cold and the rain . . .

She stands at the top of the gangplank, trembling with the effort to master herself as the ship bobs and strains against the dock ropes, drenched in water and shame.

She speaks softly to her Gods. "Domi, I've found something to fear. I pray that you take me in battle rather than a watery grave. Gargul, give me the wisdom to accept death on your terms and not mine own."

He will also cast Dancing Lights, keeping them around him an the general group to help light their way.

DM Rob - Lightning crashes
Monday January 20th, 2014 6:47:28 AM

Zeoll buffs Jozhur, then sets to casting a number of spells on himself.

Jozhur let's the group know that he'll take point. There are no objections. This place is creepy enough to give Jozhur goosebumps. Or maybe it's just cold?

Magana's inner demons overcome her and she charges forth... looking for real demons perhaps? For those new to the sight, a minotaur blindly charging in the rain is something to behold. (OOC: Excellent role playing!)

Aexana can't wait to get on land again. Movement for the gnome is considerably more difficult than for the rest of the party (see notes below). Looking around she comes to the realisation that it may be dangerous to be outdoors for too long. Storms like this have a habit of sending down lightning bolts. Is it safe for people to wear things like metal armor in a lightning storm? Furthermore, there are accounts of severe storms being accompanied by tornados.

Eager to once again set foot on land, Coer gathers his pack. He leaves standing orders with Tula to be prepared for trouble. "Aye sir!" she calls back over the noise of the storm "If you find something like an inn, it might be worth moving non-essential crew to shore. This storm is going to get worse!"

Spire's dancing lights circle the party and shed a dim light on the surroundings. He is careful not to give away Jozhur's position - though who is to say that Magana didn't accomplish that already.

Kane' may be silently hoping that Jozhur doesn't stub his toe and require aid. Getting to him quickly may prove challenging...

The docks area seems to be largely deserted - in this downpour, it's not hard to guess why. There are three other large ships that look vaguely familiar but the practically-nighttime visual conditions make it impossible to be sure.

From here, Jozhur and Magana can just about make out the occasional figure in a slicker scurry to one of the smaller boats moored along a pier, obviously checking to make sure that the vessel is secured.

You can all see a small row of buildings close to the docks, and can JUST barely make out lights in some of the windows.

-------------------------------------

NOTE: The following conditions exist outdoors for the time being...

MOVEMENT: Because of the heavy rainfall, the roads within Gullport (they're all dirt roads) have become rivers of mud, reducing movement to one-half speed.

SEEING & HEARING: The thunderstorm lashing the place has darkened the sky and loosed thunder all around the hamlet, so all Perception checks (as well as any tactics that rely on being able to clearly see and/or hear) suffer a -4 circumstance penalty; the penalty is -6 when in the vicinity of the beach/direct waterfront, thanks to the additional roar of the waves crashing against the rocky shore or cliff face. The range for seeing or hearing anything is cut in half.

LIGHT SOURCES: Thanks to the extremely dark storm clouds, the party will need to have their own sources of light if they are to see through the rain effectively. The rain and wind automatically extinguish any unprotected flames, and even has a 50% chance of extinguishing protected flames (such as lanterns).

WIND EFFECTS: Ranged weapon attacks and Fly skills are at a -4 penalty. Small (or smaller) creatures are unable to move forward against the force of the wind unless they succeed on a DC 10 Strength check (if on the ground) or a DC 20 Fly skill check if airborne.

Kane' casts a spell to make himself more comfortable in the weather and instantly feels the better for it.

Aexana struggles against the might of the wind. Fortunately for her Zeoll is at hand to lend an arm (or tail).

The rain drips from Magana's horns as she kneels in the mud. She rises only when passed by Spire.

Spire's lights give the immediate area a soft glow in the rain.

In this storm, the stealthy Jozhur is practically unoticeable. The rain and darkness can be a double-edged blade, however, as it obscures his vision too.

A faint noise over the storm draws attention to the north (the party are currently headed east). The figure in the slicker is waving one hand in the air, whilst using its other hand to hold the coat firmly closed by its neck. Whoever it is, they are calling out to the group and jogging at a slow speed towards the main party.

DM Rob - Lightning crashes

Jozhur stays still and watches the figure with interest. Whoever it is they do not look in Jozhur's direction.

Coer tries to make some light of his own, but this accursed weather drowns the lantern out as soon as it was lit.

Magana imposes herself between Spire and Kane'. She makes not attempt to hide her presence and lets it be known that anyone wanting to harm those two will have to deal with her first.

Spire keeps the lights on for the group. The others can talk as much as they wish provided it gets him out of the rain soon!

Aexana stays close to her new linotaur friend. The wind and mud makes moving difficult for her - why not get some support from those with a little more meat on their bones?

Zeoll for his part does not seem to mind offering aid to the gnome. His eyes are probably the best of the group at the moment, and he closely observes the appropaching figure. He can't make out any signs of weapons, and the mans actions do not appear hostile. By all accounts he looks like some kind of fisherman.

The figure draws closer at Kane's welcome. The group can barely make out through the wind and rain that it is a bearded, older human man wearing a bellshaped fisherman's hat and outer tunic, both made of oilskin. "Ah! Here for the trade fair no doubt. Best head to the Turning Tide Inn an' Tavern, since it's where all the other people coming to town for the Trade Fair are, AN' they got the best danged fish chowder in the Middle Seas"

"Keep heading down this path here, then take your first left. You can't miss it" his voice is raised to be heard over the storm "I'd take you there m'self, but I need to make sure ma boat 'Rosie' is properly battened down for this storm"

He pulls his slicker tight to him as he starts to walk away "Just keep going that way!"

DM Rob - The Turning Tide Inn & Tavern
Thursday January 23rd, 2014 6:05:33 AM

Jozhur leads the group towards the tavern.

Different styles of architecture suggest the building before you was once two or three separate shops, before someone sealed up the spaces between and knocked down the intervening walls. It now forms the largest structure on the block. Smoke rises from several chimneys, only to vanish into the falling rain. Firelight gleams through several windows, and the sound of conversation--nearly inaudible in the storm--leaks from the doorway. A sign above that door, portraying an eddying swirl of ocean water receding from a sandy beach, flaps violently in the wind.

At this point Zeoll anticipates trouble, and uses a scroll of detect evil before he dare enter.

The impression of three buildings joined into one continues once you enter:

Three different patterns of wooden floor, at three slightly different levels, make up the common room. Beyond this single quirk, however, this might as well be any other tavern: a bar stands on one side of the vast chamber, a staircase on the other, with a smattering of chairs and tables scattered throughout. Two fireplaces radiate a comforting warmth throughout the room, and several serving staff whirl about with tankards of ale and plates of smoked fish.

Magana takes the opportunity to shake the water from her hair. Spire takes the gentleman's approach and uses magic to help remove the filth from the party.

You notice that a few bunches of people seem to stand out in the inn's crowd:

By one fireplace sit a water drenched gnome and dwarf. They stand out as they look very sombre.

At one table, a half-elf woman is talking quietly with a half-orc man. They strike you as a rather odd couple because - besides the unusual nature of those of Elven and Orcish blood sitting together - the woman is dressed in very fine clothing and the man looks to be an experienced sailor in serviceable clothes that look sun-faded to your eye. Then you notice that the woman seems to be sitting with a couple of mercenary types on her side of the round table, and the man has a couple of sailor companions on his side of the table.

Another table holds a trio of stereotypical pirate types: loud, boisterous and demanding more ale from the wenches, arrrrrrrrr! It is at this table that Zeoll's detect evil starts to tingle. Of the three pirates, one gives off an aura of evil. He is the only person in this bustling tavern to give off an evil aura.

Sam (David W): 14/12/13 -- CMD 13 -- HP 42/42

Sam quietly sips his drink as he stares at the flames dancing before him. Water drips steadily from the gnome's long strands of hair. He glances over at his "brother", Terser. Both he and the dwarf are all that has remained together of the once mighty Grim Guard. With their rescue mission failed, the group's members quickly dispersed and headed their own ways.

The bard meets eyes with the group as they enter the bar. He politely nods and goes back to his drink. He silently hopes that the alcohol can allow him to imagine sweet Tahni, happy and safe...

Thursday January 23rd, 2014 10:48:34 AM

glad to be here, thanks for taking us in

Terser lifts his drink in a grim salute to the past with Sam, then drains it dry and signals for another. His hair and beard are soaked still, but the steam evaporating with the heat of the fireplace is soothing after the damp of the outside.

The group entering the tavern doesn't seem any more or less interesting than the other patrons, except for the magical way their clothes divest themselves of grime once they enter. That seems useful, I wonder how much self cleaning clothes would cost... the morose dwarf thinks to himself.

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC22 - HP33)  d20+12=20 ;
Thursday January 23rd, 2014 2:52:13 PM

Zeoll whispers a messaged warning about the evil dwarf in the room -- or is it just a hairy human?

He sees that someone has to step up and introduce the group. The silver-tonged ex-bard is willing to take on the job. He thinks he should refer to the flier, but he cannot seem to find it.

OOC: Link is broken?!

No matter, Zeoll can wing it, he thinks.

"Hail and well met! I am Zeoll, and with my allies beside me we have sailed a long way to visit this isle. Please let us enterr your fellowship and buy you some drrinks."

Diplomacy 20.

Since he already has a gnome by his side (and since he sees no taurs), Zeoll invites Aexana to join him in meeting the dwarf and the gnome who seem to be old friends.

Bowing, he says in dwarvish fashion to Terser and Sam, "Zeoll, Student to Shaman Frith, Warrriorr to Prride Nonowla, and Son to Clan Aene, at yourr serrvice. Now serrving on the good ship Lionfish, and pleased to meet you!"

Zeoll is a lion-centaur, that is, a liontaur or a wemic. He is old, with much more grey and silver in his mane than any other color. He us wearing a brilliant orange, red, and yellow tunic and carrying a honking big, intricately carved tower shield.

Sam forces a smile and nods to the exotic creature.

"Nice to meet you Zeoll. I'm Sam and this is my brother Terser. We are travelers from the Scab."

Sam does not carry the typical appearance of a gnome. He appears pale, meek, and (at the moment) wet. He wears a black, courtier's outfit with matching jewelry. Patches and markings on the outfit are easily identifiable as those belonging to a scribe. Sam is unarmed.

Terser (Warren G) [22/13/19 -- CMD 23 -- HP 60/60 (raging 84/84)]
Thursday January 23rd, 2014 5:01:57 PM

Terser acknowledges Zeoll when Sam mentions his name. In contrast to the gnome, Terser is every inch a warrior. A glaive rests near his chair within easy reach, and the numerous scars on his face and arms show that he is no stranger to combat. He is very protective of his gnome friend, and has became much more animated with the presence of a stranger, ready to defend his friend is they were to prove dangerous. He had lost too many friends, and would not lose another.

Her vibrant green cloak is embroidered with elaborate plant motifs. Beneath it her robes are fairly simple although they are a mishmash of several vivid colors going from lush green over deep reds and ocean blue...

DM Rob - A linotaur, a minotaur and a gnome walk into a bar...
Friday January 24th, 2014 8:48:30 AM

Coer calls a waiter over to ask about rooms. A dashing rake of a man responds to the taur's signal and approaches with a broad smile. "Of course sir! We have rooms to rent out this evening at the bargain price of only 2gp per person for delegates and envoys here for the trade fair. I believe 4 rooms are currently vacant. The crews of ships are welcome to pallets in the public room for a mere 1gp per person. Oh, and we are asking for one night's deposit up front. I'll let you consider that whilst I fetch your whiskey, sir" The overly pleasant man gives a slight nod of his head as he leaves to get Coer's drink. The Inn is charging Good Room prices for what is essentially a rather Common Inn. I guess when you are the only Inn in town you can get away with that.

As any sailor knows, the way to find out the real story of a port is to talk to a barmaid. Jozhur tries just that with the particularly blonde buxom barmaid who fetches his ale. "Oooh, you're here for the trade fair? I've always dreamt of sailing the seas and visiting distant lands" she leans forward on the bar counter whilst looking to the rafters in a dream. She returns her blue eyes to Jozhur "You're going to want to meet with Alderman Bittern. He's going to be dropping in here tomorrow morning to meet all the representatives and gives his big speech to kick things off. I think you're the fourth group to arrive. The Shipping Guild, Pirates of Jack and Elfbloods are all here too. I hope any others aren't out in this storm. Why, the last thing our little town needs is to be known for shipwrecks" she reaches out to softly touch Jozhur's hand. "Oh, um, I'll get your ale now. It will be on the house. I mean, not ON the house. I'll pay for you. Not YOU. But, um, I'll be right back" she blushes as she rushes away to get the rogue a drink. When she returns sho hurriedly places the mug before Jozhur before dashing away again but not before sending him a wink.

Aexana, Sam and Terser sit with Zeoll by the fire. Zeoll finds the woman who takes his order less pleasant than the one who took Jozhur's order. A somewhat older and full-figured woman strides over and crosses her arms. Despite the various races present - and the overly wet gnome and dwarf - she doesn't seem fussed at all.

Spire takes a seat next to his bodyguard, Magana, and lets her know that it is ok to leave his side. Spire tries to order some tea with honey. The barman - a sour-looking fellow, with a head sporting male-pattern baldness - rests behind the bar with his back to the wall as he idly polishes a glass. He simply cocks his head towards a waitress and returns to his task at hand.

Magana does her best to act non-chalant and casually observe the half-elf woman and half-orc man. Her bar stool creaks awkwardly between her weight and the floor during a lull in their conversation. Both people look directly at her, as does each of their companions. The half-elf woman gives Magana one of those "what are you looking at?" expressions before returning her attention to the table. The half-orc glares. Intently. And for quite a while. What's his problem?

The pirate-y looking man (the one on whom Zeoll detected an evil aura) laughs aloud as he holds aloft his ale mug to the half-orc "Go on Phen! Punch her! Show me how big and tough you 'Bloods are! 10 gold says you'll be eating the floor before you land a single punch!" The pirate's companions laugh loudly.

The half-orc bares his teeth and clenches his fists, his attention now directed towards the pirate-y man.

Monday January 27th, 2014 5:41:46 AM

Jozhur, ever the ladies man, offers to help this poor bar lass escape from her mundane life and gives her a chance to sail away with him (into the sunset?). The balding man behind the bar apparently overhears the conversation "Relina! There's a customer waiting for a drink" he gruffly directs the barmaid away before turning his attention to Jozhur "And you. She already has a job here. She doesn't need some tick ridden sailor trying to whisk her away and get her into trouble"

Though being quite small in comparison, Sam immediately stands up to the half-orc to defend the minotaur woman. Quite the gentleman really. His words though lack the impact he would have hoped for though.

Terser makes a much more compelling argument. He keeps his hands away from his weapons, but his demeanour is enough to let others know he means business.

Aexana stays calm. She suspects someone here may be behind the storm. But who? In the mean time she prepares to watch the fight brewing.

The mention of Elfbloods draws a number of response from the group. Spire and Coer are immediately on edge.

Kane' feels a burst of terror causing the hairs on the back of his neck to rise. Kito may be dead, but who knows how many ships and captains fly under the flag of the Elfbloods? And what if they recognise him? Would he be captured and taken as a slave - again?

Magana is unfamiliar with the Elfbloods, but Spire's reaction is enough to put her on edge as well. She slowly moves her hand to her weapon and checks to see who else might be doing the same.

Jozhur tries to get a feel on the half-elf woman. She certainly appears to have been doing some sort of business with the half-orc. She certainly does not appear distressed or on edge at all. If anything she appears very calm. Perhaps fortunately so...

Hands around the room start to reach for weapons. Jozhur and Magana among the group that do the same. The half-orc now stands, his hand resting on the hilt of a short-sword, and continues to bare his teeth towards the laughing pirate.

"Go ahead and try it, you poor excuse for an orc. My mistake, HALF orc. Wonder what the other half is?" the drunken pirate taunts the half-orc further, much to the amusement of his fellow pirates.

"Gentlemen, gentlemen. Please" the half-elf woman stands, raising her hands to both the pirate and half-orc. "The weather has forced us to take shelter together, and this obviously tests things. May I suggest another way to settle your differences? I notice a knife-throwing target hanging by the bar. How about a contest? Each team puts up 100gp. Winner takes the pot. Phen?" she turns to the half-orc

The half-orc - "Phen" apparently - grumbles and glares at the pirate "100 gold it is. How about it, Creel? Feel like losing your gold today? If you're lucky it will be all you lose"

The pirate - "Creel" - downs the rest of his ale and wipes his lips on his sleeve "100 gold means nothing to me. But watching you lose will certainly make this day more bearable. I accept"

"Very good" the half-elf woman nods "And I am in as well. You - " she says looking to Magana "- seem to have taken an interest in our business today. What say you? Do you have a team ready to compete?"

A number of patrons clear a path so that the target is not obstructed. The elderly bar woman comes out holding three old daggers which she hands to the half-elf.

"Well?" she asks as she hold the daggers out towards Magana

Knife Throwing Contest

The party have been challenged to compete in a knife throwing contest. There is a 100gp entry fee.
There are 3 competitors on each team. Each person competing gets to throw 3 knives (normal knives) from 10ft. The higher your roll, the closer you are to the bulls-eye. Nat1 is auto miss. Tally up the totals of your 3 rolls for your score. Highest team score wins the pot.

OOC: This is a ranged attack using a normal dagger. Assume AC0. You may add any modifiers relevant to the roll (eg: size).
And just in case it wasn't clear - only 3 people from the party can compete

Zeoll remembers a day earlier in his career, when he could have cast a silent true strike and maybe gotten a covert bullseye. But he does not think casting the spell in an obvious manner would serve his friends very well. So he holds his caster's tongue and lets others hurl daggers.

With a subtle use of the message cantrip and his skill at innuendo, Zeoll offers his friends a covert idea Bluff check 12 to pass a secret message fails utterly Instead, all that comes across is "Good luck, pals!"

OOC: Darn! I do not think Zeoll has succeeded in using Bluff to pass a message even once since his restart!

While the rest of his friends focus on the dart-board, the old liontaur sidles up to the half-elf woman and makes a slight bow.

"Lady, you have my thanks and my rrespect," the avuncular liontaur says to her. "Well done in defusing a volatile situation." Zeoll introduces himself and asks her name. He reveals some information about his own ship and crew, in the hope of encouraging her to reveal details about herself. He also looks for clues and tells in her appearance and her words and body language.

Kane' keeps to the background, letting the bigger, more boisterous Lionfish heroes take center stage. No matter how good witches are with knives, there is no way the half-elf is going to enter the contest!

Some help however could be used, and Kane' measures a small bag of gold and slips it to Captain Coer. "There is our bet Captain Sir, and our first contest to establish the Lionfish reputation in Gullport."

Zeoll seeks to extend his hand in diplomacy to the half-elf woman. As he approaches her two human counterparts quickly put themselves between her and him "You'll have to excuse my bodyguards" she says as she places a hand on each of their shoulders "They take their jobs very seriously" She says that with a slight smile, but the message behind it was very clear.

"Terza Grasswilde, emissary for the Shipping Guild." she gives a nod of her head. Up close, Zeoll can now take in the full features of this dark-haired, graceful woman. She'd be a perfect beauty if her left eye wasn't an ugly white, obscured by a cataract. "The Lionfish? Not a vessel I am familiar with. You don't seem as uncouth as the Pirates of Jack or Elfbloods, although time will tell I suppose. I'm curious, what do you see yourself having to offer Gullport that the Shipping Guild could not?" Zeoll does in fact deem her to be curious - with a hint of smugness.

The party are given the honor of first throws.

It takes some discussion, but the 'throwers' are soon selected.

Jozhur, Terser and Aexana each line up to represent the party. The throws are fair and the party score a total of 167pts. Time will tell whether this is good enough.

Next up.. the Shipping Guild

Terza excuses herself from Zeoll's company and is the first of her group to take aim. Though competant with throwing knives on this occaision, the warriors in the room get the impression this would not be her usual vocation. Her bodyguards throw better than she did, and together they make a modest total of 146pts.

The Pirates of Jack are up next, and Captain Creel snatches the daggers from the waiting barmaid. "Now let me show ya all how it's done!" His first throw sinks into the edge of the target. As he readies to release his next throw a loud cough comes from Captain Phen. Creel's dagger clanks into the bar and falls to the floor. "Ya did that on purpose!" Creel points his finger squarely at Phen. Phen, for his part, chuckles loudly. Creel throws his remaining dagger and it too wildly misses the target. Creel's men take their throws, and the three scuttle off in whispers and grumbles. Their score: 117.

Finally, it is the Elfbloods. Spire takes the opportunity to seek Magana's protection remembering all too well what happened the last time the party encountered the Elfbloods.
Captain Phen is the first to step up, and though he doesn't miss, his throws are far from perfect. His men perform similarly well. Their score: 138. "Just not the same when it isn't an elf" Phen casually remarks as he and his men return to their seats.

Terza is quick to prevent any further hostilities and quickly makes an announcement "The Lionfish crew are the winners! A round of drinks for all competitors on me!"

Outside, the storm rages on.

Zeoll smiles to see the two gnomes getting along well. He has a good feeling about the new gnome and the dwarf.

But his attention is on the half-elf. He racks his brain to recall any detail he may have heard about this "Shipping Guild" outfit. Knowledge Local 16.

"My dearr," the old wemic says to the diplomatic merchant, "I do not think we arre in competition. Yourr company is cerrtainly skilled, well-funded, and ambitious, if I may be perrmitted a few deductions. But the Lionfish is crrewed by adventurrerrs, and if my yearrs make me any judge, one day this crrew may be counted among the high and lorrdly, maybe even joining the rranks of the Drragon Consorrtium."

"So you see why we arre not in competition. Ourr strrengths arre in the most dangerrous missions, to the most unusual locations, deliverring, no doubt, one-time carrgoes of the most valuable kind. And I must add, that prrofit is not ourr prrimary motive. We seek to engage in acts of herroism that benefit the disadvantaged and downtrrodden, in the trradition of the Wold's grreatest, such as Valdorr Drragonstone and Captain Brrahmah of the Chosen. Although we arre as eagerr for rrewarrd as any!"

Zeoll smiles, hoping to defuse any offense he may have implied.

"If you seek rregularr trrade rroutes, if you seek steady business, if you prreferr successful mercantilism without herroics, then therre is no overrlap in the serrvices prrovided by ourr companies. And if you do seek to be herroes, rrest assurred, therre arre opporrtunities forr herroism a-plenty in this wide Wold of ourrs."

Diplomacy 13 this time. Maybe Zeoll is bragging a bit too much to be as diplomatic as he would like. Especially with the references to the Dragon Consortium and his old pal Brahmah! The old fool cannot help being full of himself a bit, it seems.

Magana speculates that the Elfbloods may just be "Elves Gone Wild". The reality though is far far worse. Coer and Kane' explain the truth behind the Elfbloods - that they see elves as nothing but a commodity to be used or extinguished.

Aexana revels briefly in her victory from the knife throwing. The real prize is the gift she receives from Sam. It's funny how sometimes such a small token can have such a big impact.

Terser gives his gnome friend a firm pat on the back and calls for another round in true dwarven style.

Jozhur and Zeoll speak briefly with Terza, and explain that they are not here seeking to impose on any plans the Shipping Guild may have - well, not intentionally.

Zeoll has personally had no dealings with the Shipping Guild, though he does recall hearing rumours of them being primarily a trade outfit. A diminished organisation looking to rebuild itself. What lengths each of its branches would go to to achieve success is unknown.

"How very interesting" Terza says nodding along as Zeoll impresses upon her the groups sense of adventure "We shall just have to wait and see what the Alderman thinks of our proposals. Now, if you'll excuse me I will turn in for the night. Gentlemen." Terza bows and departs with her bodyguards in tow. They don't leave the inn, but rather retire to one of the guest rooms.

Captain Creel - of the Pirates of Jack - remains in the tavern area, drinking with his men. He is a lot less outspoken and jovial than earlier, and speaks in hushed tones with his men.

Captain Phen - of the Elfbloods - similarly drinks with his men. The half-orc grins as he surveys the room and his nostrils flare as he eyes each elf.

4 rooms in the inn are currently vacant at the "bargain price" of only 2gp per person. Pallets in the public room are available for 1gp per person for your crew. First nights payment is required up front.

Doubling or more in a room is not a problem for Kane' whose entire life has been spent on ship. "Come, Aexana Ma'am, keep the room with Spire and Magana, and I shall share with Coer and Jozhur. The dwarf and gnome as well as Zeoll seem to already have found thier own accomodations."

Kane' will go upstairs with the little gnome-lady and see her to the room with Magana, before turning to his own bed. The BloodWitch takes third watch, leaving Jozhur with the second as Coer watches over thier room at first watch.

Before going to bed, Spire will copy the spell Fox's Cunning into his spellbook from the scroll he bought at the Catacombs. "The Elfbloods are not all orcs," he explains to Magana as he does so. "For some reason, they all just... seem to hate elves." Another shiver runs through his body. "I try not to think about them a lot. They bring up unpleasant memories."

Spellcraft to decipher the scroll (if necessary): 18, fail, try again tomorrow
