Pursuit! (Module Aftermath)

Obla Dee, Obla Dah... - DM Donna
Monday July 8th, 2013 7:05:04 AM

In spite of the somber mood from the personal sense of confusion and betrayal, the crew aboard the Lionfish are certainly able to set sail for a destination: Bonetown, where logic dictates that the heroes may be able to find out more about their mentor, Captain Annoir. Plus there is that cleric of Pantheon that just might be able to help out Coer with his little problem, too.

The familiiar sight of the Bonetown piers hove into view and a berth for the Lionfish is quickly found. The sun is just about past the middle of the sky when the ship is secured to the dock near a pile of crates and a mound of lumpy-looking fishing net that seems to have been shoved ignominiously up against them.

The Lionfish's gangplank is deployed so that the heroes can ascend to the pier, but even as the group disembarks the ship, something catches their collective eye...

ROLL FOR PERCEPTION:

1-10: You thought you saw that pile of lumpy fishing net move (or, in Coer's case, you heard a strange sound from the pier), but it's just got to be your imagination.
11 - 16 Highlight to display spoiler: { No, wait--you DID see that pile of lumpy fishing net move (in Coer's case, you're sure you heard the sound of something muffled coming from pier.)}
17 - 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { Not only did you see movement/hear a sound, but now you just KNOW that the motion/noise is NOT random--there is definitely SOMEthing in that bundle of net!}
21 and over Highlight to display spoiler: { Shiver me timbers!!! There's something ALIVE in that thar net!!!}

As Jozhur heads down the gangplank, the oddly placed net quickly catches his eye.

I'd swear to Domi that pile of fishnet move. Somehow I doubt it's full of fish.

He quietly removes his sap from his belt and heads for the net, on his tippy toes, of course.

Coer walks carefully down the gangplank, his hooves clicking on the wood and echoing back the location of items around him. it is a crude way to get around but it serves him well. His ears prick up at the unexpected muffled noise from the docks and points to the source.

"is the dock secure? i heard a noise."

Kane' stands by Coer, giving the minotaur a shoulder to hold as he walks down the gangplank and onto the deck. "Steady, Coer sir, you may use me if you wish as your eyes until we can undo this spell."

As the netting performs its gyrations, Kane' agrees with Spire. What is more, as the BloodWitch has used nets often, he knows that they would make a very poor ambush location... so he moves forward to help!

"Please stop struggling under there, it will only entangle you more and you may fall into the water to drown. If you are peaceful, we may be able to free you."

Jozhur c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y approaches the moving net bundle with stealthy and armed precision even as Coer's sharp ears and Spire's eagle eyes confirm that the net is more than it seems.

Kane' and Shemeska, however, sense that the odd bundle isn't so much a threat as a mystery to be solved.

As the Blood Witch plucks a bit at the entangled fishing equipment, Jozhur has a front row seat to what's uncovered:

The head of a man with a shaggy mane of hair and a gag in his mouth. He is clearly wrapped up not only in fishing net but also rope tied very tightly over everything, making for a great, big, misshapen mass of net and rope.

...does something smell like fish...?

Zeoll
Wednesday July 10th, 2013 6:26:54 AM

It quickly becomes clear that this is no human trapped and bound under a net, but a liontaur! Brightly clad in orange, red, yellow, and brown, the wemic nods when asked not to shout, and is clearly glad to be loosed from his bindings.

"I am glad to be loosed frrom my bindings!" he says in a thickly accented Common, as soon as he is loosed from his bindings. "I am Zeoll, at yourr serrvice."

He gathers himself together, and with halting movements rubs some life back into his limbs and spine. "When you've seen as many yearrs as I have," he says wearily, "being knocked out and tied up is a surrefirre way to rrouse the demons of lumbago."

His once-auburn mane is now more grey than not, and his face is weathered by a long life spent mostly on the road. He looks around, taking you in -- an elf, a human, a minotaur, a half-elf, and a drow. He grins as he sizes you up, and sees the hand of fate moving once more in his life.

"I take it you may be a grroup of herroes? And underr what name do you rroam the Wold, helping the innocent, perrhaps, or championing the weak?"

He reaches down into the loosened bindings of rope and net as he speaks, drawing forth from the mess a huge wooden shield, carved with vines and creatures; and featuring an acorn right in the middle. Some may recognize the iconography of the Fae King and his wife.

Let's Be Friends! - DM Donna

Ah, ha! The captive is freed from his bonds and introduces himself. Although Bonetown is your group's home base, surely you are all polite enough to do the same (and don't forget to write a nice descriptive passage about how others would see your PC--even Coer, whose state of blindness will hopefully be dealt with soon.)

While your PCs are exchanging the social pleasantries, it's time to make sure that those of you who have been adventuring with the group before now get to add to their Experience Points (hurray!!!)

Ye Who Participated in the Previous Scene: kindly add 1850xp to your character. This will no doubt bring you up to Level 5 PCs. (Congratulations on that!) Level up your PC, roll for your HPs on the Loot 'N' Booty board, etc., etc.

The following is a reminder list of the various goods and sundries that your little group of piratey people managed to snag from the situations and/or combat from the previous scene:

Non Magical But Still Highly Useful and/or Sellable Stuffs:
3 x Scimitars
2 x Rapiers
5 x Daggers
10 x Vials of Alchemists Fire
Coins totalling 375gp

Magical Items Your Group Has Managed to Identify:
+1 Scimitar
+1 Chain Shirt
+1 Ring of Protection
Horn of Fog
2 Scrolls - 1 x Raise Dead, 1 x To Be Advised <--sorry about that...working on finding out if that title means you did ID it but the DM didn't give you the spell on it

Magical Unidentified:
A very nice light crossbow
2 x pieces of studded leather armor
Some rope
That Amulet that Spire Put On: you haven't really identified this one too much, but since Spire's been wearing it (and since he came back from the dead), he's noticed that his skin is kind of slimy now...

Kane' is surprised past his usual unobtrusiveness at seeing not only a live wemic (as Spire called them), but THAT wemic! "You are the wemic we saw in the Tapestry of Gargul's Throne Room!", he says almost accusingly.

He recovers enough to give his own name. Wearing shades of warm, rich browns, the thin half-elf keeps his shoulder-length dark brown hair loose about his head, his coppery skin only highlighting the golden brown of expressive eyes. Shirt, leggings, and loincloth of cotton and canvas, he favors trim in reds and yellows. He has no visible weapons or armor, but the hint of a spell component pouch and a tiny cauldron hanging from his belt gives away that he is a BloodWitch.

With another question, Kane' looks at, well, Zeoll. "Are you the hero who has done a favor for Gargul? And how did you become tied up and hidden beneath some fishing nets?"

From his intonation, you can tell that Zeoll is poking fun at himself, and does not actually think that Gargul has a tapestry featuring Zeoll in his throne room.

DM OOC: can you clarify the name of this PC, please? You're posting him as "Kane' " and yet his CS says he's "Keiki". Thanks!

Backstory: On his first sailing with the Lionfish, Keiki was able to help the Lionfish in several fights, and in the last one fought toe-to-toe with Kito, the Captain of the Elfbloods. And when Yel'kno and Spire were both killed in the fight, he even was brave in front of Gargul himself! (Gargul demanded that Keiki give up the search for his family and befriend a hero who has done a service for Gargul.) For these actions, Keiki performed a naming ceremony of his people, changing his name from Keiki (Child) to Kane' (Man).

But he's the same hero.

I changed his name in Post but forgot to change his CS. Changed now, thanks!

Even as the heroes from the Lionfish get acquainted with the newly-freed Wemic, they hear the unmistakable sound of somebody clearing their throat. Standing on the pier is an average-size human male with neat brown hair and an inquiring brown gaze holding a clipboard in one hand.

"I'm Buron Caldwell," he says without preamble, "Junior Harbormaster. Which one of you is going to pay the dock fee for the Lionfish?"

Ah, yes--in spite of adventure and the meeting of possible new allies, Life goes on and bureaucracy must be maintained. The coinage for parking the ship is quickly scraped up and the clerk accordingly records the transaction on his clipboard.

"Okay, here's your receipt," he says, giving you a slip of parchment, "Don't forget to check in at the harbormaster office--" The man nods at the weathered little building slumping at the far end of the pier, "--if you take on any cargo before you leave. Now, before I go--any questions...?"

It occurs to the various members of the party that someone from the harbormaster's office just might have information about the comings and goings of a certain captain that you all have burning questions about...

"We are a crew of... sailors?" the elf responds to Zeoll, looking at the others. "I would certainly not call us pirates, but I do not think sailors is an appropriate term. Perhaps... sea-faring adventurers?"

When the Junior Harbormaster approaches, Spire's face takes on a much darker tone. "In fact, we do have some questions," he mentions, stepping forward. "There is a certain captain by the name Annoir that has tried his hardest to send us to Gargul." The elf leaves out the fact that he succeeded. "He hired the Elf Blood's ship to do so. Do you have any information regarding their whereabouts? We would be willing to pay for any information leading us to them. And we are aware of the... rules regarding brawls on the docks. We will not be a nuisance to you or the harbormaster."

Previously. as Spire felt his skin go slimy, he grimaced, retching at himself, but keeping the amulet on. "All in the name of magic," he mutters to himself. "Find out what it does, then decide what to do with it. Just breathe deeply."

The man listens to Spire, shock and disbelief clearly written on his face.

"Sir!" Caldwell says indignantly, "Surely you must be mistaken! Everyone around the harbor knows there is no better man than Captain Annoir! He single-handedly made the channel safer by killing a particularly nasty bunch of Devil Fish! He drove off a gang of troublemakers called the Elf Bloods! Why, he even helped out the influential Count Ruben by finding a stolen painting and returning it to the nobleman, suffering losses on the way! This town owes Captain Annoir a debt of gratitude for such heroic sacrifice...I'm happy to have heard that he took the massive reward for giving the Count back his treasured art and set sail on the Iron Hull just yesterday!" The Junior Harbormaster shakes his head, clearly rejecting any notion that Captain Annoir could do any wrong.

"Your talk reminds me of some of the mutterings floating around the Busty Mermaid!" Caldwell adds with a deep sniff of disapproval. "Those old reprobates have nothing better to do with their time than to repeat the imaginings from their collective dementia by claiming to have been cheated by the good Captain." He harrumphs, eying the party with a particularly jaundiced eye.

"Good day!" Caldwell dismisses you, his voice clearly dripping acid, and strides away in a visibly affronted manner.

Jozhur is a small but rather athletic looking young human. He moves very gracefully, his steps light. His skin is fair, even after months of sea travel. His head bears a shaggy mop of jet black hair. He is dressed in a hooded flowing black outfit, with a bit of mithral armor visible near the collar.

"I suppose you could just call me a wandering adventurer. While growing up in South Harbor I lived a lifestyle I wasn't proud of. Decided to head to Rum to escape my reputation and start over. The ship I was on went down somewhere near Bonetown, where nice witch by the name of Goodie Bess saved my life. Kane' startles but controls himself, not wanting to give the harbormaster anymore information. He tugs at Spire's sleeve. "No, remember, it was Captain Renware who did those things to us." Kane' is a horrible liar, unable to read others well, but wise enough to know when to try it.

After the assistant harbormaster is gone, Kane' tugs on Spire's sleeve again. "With such a good reputation, denouncing Annoir to the town will put us in the same category as the crazies. The Lionfish must be wiser than that."

The half-elf speculates while sizing up Zeoll, still only talking to Spire, but loud enough for the others to hear. "It would be unusual if Captain Annoir shanghaied Mister Zeoll and sailed away but did not impress him to be a sailor and conveniently has him tied up on the very dock we arrived at. Almost as if the Harbormaster was bribed to put the Lionfish here.

"If I may, Captain Jozhur, I suggest you lead to the safe house where we gather supplies then we need to find some information.
First, have the ElfBloods come into port? Their ship got away after all. The harbormaster will know.
" And Kane' shudders at the thought, not wanting to go to the harbormasters offices.
"Second, perhaps visit the Busty Mermaid to learn more of Captain Annoir
Third, discover Captain Annoir's usual tavern of choice and snoop unobtrusively in there for information."

Zeoll tries to deduce the time of day when he came to, and how long he has been on the dock. Survival check to deduce time has elapsed: 17

Then he prays for more Guidance and opens his nose. He recalls the scent of Annoir. He picks up his shield and casts about on the wharf. He tries to find the man's scent. Survival check to track: 27!

Zeoll is vaguely aware that the others are talking about what they will do next. He calls out, "If the trrail is not too cold, I can lead you to Annoirr rright now!"

OOC to DM: Highlight to display spoiler: {Zeoll has the scent ability. The DC to track in the presence of a strong scent (fish) is 20. The penalty for a cold trail is -2 per hour. So if Zeoll has been on the wharf three hours or less, his roll of 27 should suffice to track Annoir?}

DM Donna Reply Highlight to display spoiler: { alas, poor Zeoll, the only trail you'd be able to discern is to a now-empty ship's berth--the Iron Hull sailed away just before dawn (the "just yesterday" that Caldwell was referring to), and it's about mid-afternoon-ish now. Don't forget, however, that Zeoll revived briefly just long enough to overhear Annoir swearing up a storm about how he now "can't get my money's worth" from paying for Zeoll's not-so-voluntary service to his ship because the big bundle of net-and-rope-wrapped Wemic was too big and bulky for Annoir and the two sailors with him to maneuver into their dinghy. (The Iron Hull almost never uses the gang-plank method to board their ship--that's how Annoir has managed to not have his own vessel inspected for possible slave labor.)}

Working on the unidentified items, you find yourselves in possession of a Crossbow of Frost, a suit of +1 studded leather, the second suit, which is one of +1 studded leather of light fortification (what a lucky guess about that on Shemeska's part! ;D), and a Rope of Climbing.

Oh, and Spire is finding that his slimy skin is making him a little less charming to most.

The group comes to the location of their little portside headquarters to find that there are a few changes to the snug building: it's actually "furnished". Yes, the interior of the public spaces sport all manner of barrels, planks and what are obviously cast-off pieces of furniture. As you stand at the foot of the double-wide log stairs that lead to the upper floor, a door to your immediate left opens up and Lansel enters.

"OH! You're back!" the erstwhile scribe states the obvious, then leans a bit to one side so that he yells to Engev about your return. As most of you shake away the ringing in your ears, a door to your right opens up and Brother Engev comes forth, smiling.

"Welcome back, my friends!" the cleric greets you. "As you can see, Lansel and myself have been busy trying to make this house a bit of a home for you. Given our limited funds, we called upon the community to help us out in our hour of need. We were supplied with many things with which to fashion tables, chairs, benches and even some...curtains and such..."

You get a brief but enlightening tour of the newly-furnished digs. The tour is concluded with Brother Engev ushering you into the kitchen where a pot of...stew?...is bubbling gently to one side of the cooking hearth.

"Sit down, then, and tell me of your latest trek to the sea..." the cleric of Pantheon prompts.

"Well, I like what you've done with the place while we've been away."

"Well, it's kind of a long story, I'll try to be brief."

"Captain Annoir had us attempt to recover a painting of his from the Elfblood ship. We were unable to find the painting, but did find a magical ring. We followed a distress signal given by the ring, where we had a run in with some Merfolk types and Kelpies. We were then attacked by the Elf Bloods, who somehow knew where to find us. In the fight with the Elf Bloods, we lost Spire and Yel'kno, and Coer was blinded. We were able to have Spire brought back and were hoping to find someone who could cure Coer's blindness."

"One of the Elf Bloods had a note signed that read 'They should be near the coordinates. Make sure none of them make it out alive.' Now the junior harbormaster tells us that Annoir killed some devil fish, drove off the Elf Bloods, and recovered some stolen painting. We will be investigating this further, would you happen to know anything that may help us?"

The half-elf shyly introduces himself to Lansel and Brother Engev, and accepts whatever sleeping accomodations he is allowed. Not one to remember having anything of his own, the half-finished house and cast-off furniture look like paradise!

"Blind???" Brother Engev says, looking alarmed. "Coer--with your permission--I may have a scroll I can use to counter that..." The lanky cleric puts a hand on the minotaur's elbow and leads him away towards the room he keeps.

"Captain Annoir did all that..?" Lansel asks, frowning. "You know...I have a customer or two who've been talking about how the Captain isn't all that most of Bonetown seems to believe he is. I've heard that there are a bunch of people who have been cheated by him hanging out at some tavern...the...eh...um...the B-Busty Mermaid..?"

Soon, Coer and Brother Engev return, with the minotaur's sight restored. Lansel repeats what he told the others.

"Yes, I'm sure that you all can't be the only ones who've been lied to by Captain Annoir," Engev agrees, "It amazes me that he's been able to get away with it all this time..."

Zeoll
Monday July 15th, 2013 8:02:03 PM

Zeoll looks around the building and nods. "It is verry nice indeed." he says.

In actuality, he cannot help but compare this place to the Iron Tower of Hook City, where he and his Southern Continent group had lived. He remembers the doorways made of argent brick, with their tiny rose-embossed mosaics. He thinks about the kitchen island made of a solid piece of marble. He thinks about the lovely bright chandelier. He feels a pang of homesickness for his own rooftop garden.

Then he remembers Hearthold Keep the castle that Domi himself granted to his original group of friends. That was a stronghold built on a scale for taurs. And he remembers the sacred sanctum where they kept the very Heart of Domi. That was an honor not to be replicated in his lifetime.

Zeoll remembers his youth, when great gifts were granted to him, and he failed at his task; Domi had enjoined them to unite the taur races, but he and his friends failed in the end. Zeoll remembers his middle age, and how he sacrificed what he had honestly earned, in order to stop the Chaos Bell and serve Gargul's need for a second time. Now he is old, and reduced to a hovel built for small folk, furnished with rag-tag cast-offs and second-hand junk.

"Well," the old liontaur thinks, "let me not fail the test of humility, come at last."

Zeoll praises all the hard work of the priests, and is honored to be at their service. He looks at the small patches of dirt outside the building.

"Perrhaps I could plant a garrden?" he asks. He thinks about plants that will thrive in the wind off the sea, and starts to make plans.

Looking around, the elf's mood improves a bit. "But this place is incredible, my friends. What you have managed to do with so little is truly incredible. Thank you both so much." The elf clasps his hands together, feeling the slime stick to itself and gagging. "It seems Annoir is a most pressing matter. Perhaps he sent his ship away to make us think he left Bonetown. I think an investigation is in order." Spire thinks back to Annoir's ship, remembering the hidden door behind him. "That man is hiding something. I would like to find out what."

Looking to Zeoll, the elf nods feverishly. "Please, be my guest. So far, I know that it can create salt water. And... well, this." Spire raises his hand, watching a bit of slime drip onto the floor.

"He's definitely up to something, Spire. Seems he tried to have us killed, for starters. I just can't figure out why. Shall we start at the Busty Mermaid?"

Jozhur lays a hand on Coer's shoulder, "Now that you have your sight back, how would you like to be the next Captain of the Lionfish? I really don't want the title, and unless someone else steps up, I think you'd be a good candidate. Seems natural for the First Mate to take over."

Follow That Clue! - DM Donna
Tuesday July 16th, 2013 4:01:47 AM

The clerics smile and nod at the positive comments but look a bit dismayed when Coer's opinion is spoken out loud.

"Well," Brother Engev says (a tad bit defensively), "I would remind you that we were working with limited funds...and most of the money went into the construction itself. The building is made of wood...and the wood itself wasn't painted on the outside...but Merkal the carpenter said that he made darn sure that the building is weather-proof and quite sound. He said that it would be a simple thing to build a masonry layer around it whensoever we have the funds to take the building to the next level..."

"And as for the decor..." Lansel adds, "...yes, I will admit that the furniture, drapes and other items are practically all repurposed from other things. However, this just gives you an incentive to save up and get better items more suited to your taste, now, doesn't it..?"

Meanwhile, Spire takes up Zeoll on his offer and shows him the amulet. Zeoll is surprised to find that the necklace radiates an old magic that--at first glance--seems relatively minor in nature: yes, it grants its wearer the ability to produce salt water a few times a day, as well as the ability to see underwater. The trade-off is that the wearer of the amulet begins to take on the characteristics of the Kelpie, in that their skin becomes off-puttingly slimy and they take on a transparent aspect. The nature of the magic is that--once activated--the item has a tendency to stay with the person who activated it for the rest of their life.

On a different (but definitely game-related!) note: the consensus is again that a visit to the Busty Mermaid is in order.

DM OOC:

Amulet Info (in game terms):

The Amulet of the Kelpie (Fate Item worth 1000gp)
- Wearer gains the ability to creates 2 gallons of salt water 3/day
- Wearer gains the ability to see perfectly well under water
- Wearers skin becomes slimy, and after several days starts to become transparent. Wearer takes a -1 penalty to charisma based checks.
- Must be worn for 24 hrs for effects to work.

After distributing the loot and taking his own share, Kane' is ready to move with the others to the Busty Mermaid. " I suggest we listen first before telling everyone what we think. I hope it is not another trap of Captain Annoir." So far, Kane' has been opening up to the other Lionfish adventurers, but still keeps unobtrusive with strangers.

Zeoll sings the tale of how Gargul gave him a quest, to find and destroy a Black Sword, Gargul's Black Sword, that he had himself made in ages long gone. Now it was out of its maker's hands, and its evil had grown, and Zeoll and his friends had to find it and destroy it. Theysearched for a very long time, and found a magic map, and finally located it on, of all places, Wemic Isle! Another group -- of red Gargulites -- were also searching for it, and after a great battle, Zeoll's group won. They took the sword to a special isle and enacted the ritual to destroy it, at last.

Kane' and Johzur pick rooms to occupy, as does Shemeska. Each of the bedrooms on the upper floor has a trunk or footlocker, and each locker has an average lock on it. However, your PC has to roll a d6 to see if the locker came with a key (even means yes you have a key; odd number means you can't lock your trunk until you either have a locksmith make you a key for it.)

Since Shemeska is opting for the attic space, he will have to state what furnishings he's using there and where he's getting them from.

The Busty Mermaid is in a relatively quiet section of town--one can see that the buildings in this section are small but in decent repair.

Upon entering the tavern, ROLL FOR PERCEPTION results:
1 to 10: The tavern itself is occupied by a couple dozen patrons, but it isn't as lively as, say, the Sea Shanty
11 to 16, Highlight to display spoiler: { most of the customers look as though they're experienced old salts of the sea--practically all of them have skin resembling leather and more than a few bear evidence of permanent injuries such as eye patches, hook hands and/or peg legs.}
17 to 20, Highlight to display spoiler: { the patrons of the place--after an initial glance in your direction--have opted to ignore your entire party.}
21 or higher, Highlight to display spoiler: { the patrons of the place are actually feigning disinterest...your party definitely has the attention of at least several of the people at the tables.}

The person tending bar is a voluptuous woman with her blonde hair haphazardly secured in a kerchief. She cocks an eyebrow in your direction but otherwise says nothing.

The liontaur puts an arm around Ka-nay's shoulder. "Come, do let us give happierr endings to both of ourr tales!"

At the tavern, Zeoll looks around carefully. Perception (including a +1 from the Taur's Try) 29 tells him quite a lot.

Since the place isn't extremely lively (per DM post), Zeoll looks around for an empty table. He stands forward and approaches the barmaid. "My dearr," he says, "my frriends and I arre herre to drrink and rrelax! I take it that table will suit us fine? We'd apprreciate the hospitality, and new-come to land, we have coin to spend."

Zeoll drinks with his friends, then walks around the establishment for small talk with the patrons.

"Aye, the grrog will do, especially forr them what's thirrsty! I'm glad I did not ship out with Captain Annoirr afterr all, this morrning! I haven't yet had time to do my drrinking."

In fact, Zeoll does not do all that much drinking, wanting to keep his wits about him. Bluff check to drink less than he appears: 12. meh.

But more importantly, with comments like these, he hopes to start some conversations and hear some gossip -- especially about Annoir, of course. Diplomacy check to Gather Info: 28! Sweet!

And Zeoll tries to keep alert as to the mood of the patrons. Sense Motive 27! Nice die roller!

Zeoll also suggests that the others approach the barmaid or strike up conversations ... but not Spire, if he is still dripping slime. And not Ka-nay, alas, since the boy does not seem likely to be able to open his mouth, much less sniff out something useful. Coer moves himself into Bedroom 1 at Portside House (leaving Bedroom 2 as the only other bedroom that is sized for a Taur to Zeoll.)

Jozhur successfully manipulates the lock on the chest in his room and stows his own gear away. (DM Note: until such time as you get a key made for your chest, Jozhur will always have to roll to lock AND to unlock the chest if he wishes for the chest to remain in either state. Make a note on your CS that the lock on the chest is an Average one.)

Spire whispers a warning that the patrons of the Busty Mermaid are more interested in the party's entrance than it would appear.

Shemeska orders sweet vermouth with a twist.

Kane' muses about how the group will find out the info they're seeking.

Zeoll assures Kane' that there are many options available to those who mull over their choices before acting and demonstrates his own versatility after drinking Jozhur's "liquid courage" (which Jozhur, himself, gulped a bit of as well.)

Coer decides to allow the more diplomatic of the group do the talking for all of them.

The blonde at the bar takes out a stoneware cup.

"We got Hollyhock, Parting Tree an' Whistalshade brands o' vermouth, hon," she tells Shemeska, "Got a preference..?"

Anyone in earshot may ROLL FOR KNOWLEDGE (LOCAL) or CRAFT (Winemaking/Vintner) result:
1 to 10: you're impressed that a tavern that apparently isn't as popular as the Sea Shanty actually has a selection of fortified wines.
11 to 16 Highlight to display spoiler: { you kind of recall that the Hollyhock brand is one of the most popular in the Wold, as it comes from the 2nd Plateau region in New Ellenna.}
17 to 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { you also remember that Parting Tree brand is the go-to vermouth amongst Elven-blooded races.}
21 and over Highlight to display spoiler: { of the three brands mentioned, the Whistalshade vermouth is the most expensive, as it comes from a very selective vineyard on Centaur Isle.}

The bartender seems to like the various bits of attention she's getting from the raven-haired rogue and the silver-tongued Wemic, as she assembles a tray with various glasses and tankards of cocktails and bears it over to the party's chosen table herself. Her station at the bar is taken over by a stocky man with frizzy orange hair.

"Name's Bessie," she introduces herself, "I been runnin' the Mermaid since my husband hopped a clipper and sailed away from Bonetown twelve years ago. What I haven't seen, I've surely heard." She looks each person in the face and nods.

"No need to shine me on, mates, though I thank ye for tryin'...ain't a woman alive that don't appreciate a nice bit of flattery spread with a convincing tongue. So ye want a bit o' scuttlebutt about Annoir, eh? Ye came to the right place. That son of a sandshark is one o' the best spouters o' bilge I ever seen--an' that includes m' husband!" Bessie stops long enough to make a mock toast and gulp from one of the cups on the tray.

"I ain't never had to deal with Annoir m'self, but there are plenty o' swabs in here who have!" she tells you. "They can tell ye tales about how Annoir tricked 'em into runnin' missions for him, only to be paid in treachery. An'--to rub saltwater inta the wounds--that blighter always takes credit for their work, too! It's got so most o' the Bonetown muckity-mucks all think the Iron Hull don't leave no wake!"

It makes it slim chances for us to deliver retribution when he has escaped for so long." Again, he speaks to himself, but loud enough for the people at nearby tables to hear. The Witch may not like to talk to others directly, but he is wise enough to try to get them to open up on their own...

The half-elf takes a gulp of the vermouth like he's drinking water. The fiery liquid burns all the way to his stomach, and leaves Kane' teary-eyed and gasping for air!

He caps the bottle and eyes the level of liquor remaining before carefully tucking it back into his backpack. "She said she saw someone die from drinking half a bottle of the stuff."

"Wait a minute, the Rotting Seal was where we had our first run in with the Elf Bloods. Now I think it is no coincidence that shortly after we ran those scoundrels out of the bar we received the note from Annoir."

Jozhur ponders this and sips his ale, looking about during their conversation with Bessie, trying to pick out anyone who seems especially interested in what Shemeska and Kane were saying. (Perception: 12)

He lowers his voice and leans toward the barmaid, "Bessie, would you have any leads on where we can find Annoir. We know he skipped port shortly before we arrived today. If you could point us to anyone besides the Harbormaster who might know where he took off to, I would be very grateful."

"Also, which of these men have been cheated by Annoir? All of them?"

Take a Number - DM Donna
Friday July 19th, 2013 8:19:48 AM

The Bonetown crew get chatty with Bessie, who listens to their conversation with an occasional grimace.

"Oh, aye," she confirms, "There's no doubt that Annoir took clear advantage o' ye, claiming your deeds as his own an' then tryin' t'make sure none o' ye lived to tell the tale. He done that to Fennick over there..." She nods in the direction of a hook-handed individual sitting at a table nearby.

"The Galen brothers are fresh from some of his latest treachery, too..." Bessie points out a pair of large half-orcs at one end of the bar. It is clear that they would be classified as identical twins if not for the eyepatch one of them wore.

"Ahoy, Galens!" the bartender practically yodels. The two half-orcs look her way. "This group would hear o' yer exploits on the Iron Hull if ye'd care t'share!" The twins exchange a glance and, shrugging, amble over.

"Ale for the tale..?" the Galen with the eyepatch asks casually. Bessie nods and fetches the drinks, returning to her station at the bar after dropping the tray at the table.

"I'm Grunk," the second half-orc says, then nods to his one-eyed brother, "He's Krunk. We were hands aboard the Iron Hull this past voyage, when Cap'n Annoir was droppin' anchor up and down the isles between here 'n' Rum..."

"Gettin' orders for trade, he says..." Krunk adds, giving Zeoll a particularly sharp look.

"The ship's healer got sick hisself," Grunk continues, "So the Cap'n, he says he needs a new healer."

"Got some female to flip her petticoats at some..." Krunk begins to say, but he stops and--this time--both he and Grunk stare hard at Zeoll. They exchange another look and then shrug.

"Some liontaur. Tricked the gib inta drinkin' a sleep brew."

"We was ordered to secure 'im and plop him inta the dinghy so's the liontaur could be rowed out to the Iron Hull..."

Now both brothers speak at the same time:

"...but the liontaur was too big for the little boat!" Krunk snorts.

"The Cap'n was sore to leave port, so he screams at us that we be fired--"

"An' he jumps into his boat and rows away, leavin' us stranded at port with no wages!"

The half-elf himself is not very good (understatement!) at speaking with others, but is quite content to whisper his ideas into the ears of his companions. And he does so, to anyone who will listen.

"Did Captain Annoir or the crew members of the Iron Hull have a place in town? If we go there we could find objects that once belonged to them, and I could then Scry for their location." Kane' is aware of the limitations of the spell and it would be useless while the Iron Hull was at sea. But in port, now, in port they may be able to identify the landmarks as to where it is.

Indeed--anyone in the party who has Profession: Sailor (or even has been on any ship at all) knows that--from Bonetown--there is a slow, safe passage and there is a faster, less-safe passage to Centaur Isle.

Obviously the party is going to have to pick one or the other.

"Naw," Grunk replies to one of the questions, "Cap'n made it a point to never leave his ship for more than a few hours. He don't got no house on land or nuthin'."

"An'--from the way he was talkin' while we was totin' this guy along--" Krunk pipes up, nodding at Zeoll, "--he was hot t'set sail soon as he could. I'm sure he took the fastest way to Fort Stag."

"We can tell you this much..." Grunk says, "...the Cap'n always spends at least a couple of weeks at a time whenever he goes t'Fort Stag. Not sure why, though--he always goes ashore there with Pitch an' a hand-picked crew of hardcores."

"Yeah," Krunk agrees, "He don't ever pick us for goin' ashore at Centaur Isle. Never."

And so, it all comes down to: just how is the party going to follow the man who has cheated practically everyone at the Busty Mermaid--by taking the quicker way or taking the safer way..?

Preparing to Shove Off - DM Donna

The crew of the Lionfish should be told of the impending voyage, of course.

Meanwhile, the PC party makes sure that they have all of their own personal supplies and equipment in order before the anticipated sea voyage.

The DMs of this game will be reviewing the character sheets of the party members to make sure that they are all compliant with the rules of the Wold, so make sure that your PCs are up to snuff as soon as you can!

ooc: Still good to go.

Saturday July 27th, 2013 2:05:38 PM

Jozhur heads off to the Rotten Seal to attempt to procure another bottle of Elvin Absinthe.

-------------------------------------
ooc: I don't think this was a standard item. It exists on the Pathfinder rules site, but the description provided with the item is different than the Pathfinder site. Jozhur also only paid 200g vs. 500g.

Guessing it is DM's discretion if this is available again or a one time thing. DM post with original purchase was January 11th.

Zeoll is ready to go. He has no packing to do and is fully equipped.

OOC: Made a couple tweaks to my PC sheet. It should be good to go. :-)

Character sheet and header are updated and should be ready. Character sheet is a mess, though. I'll work on it as I have time.
