Shore Leave

Captain Renchild
Wednesday May 23rd, 2012 11:23:56 PM

ooc: The sailor, sadly, died on impact.

ooc2: No more rolls are necessary.

After perhaps an hour of assisting with the clean-up, Renchild emerges from the Captain's quarters and places his hands on the railing. Conversations die down as crewmen try to hear what he has to say. "I have plotted our location. We're about 600 miles out of Rum. There is an island some thirty miles northeast, in an archipelago off the coast of the continent. We will sail there to affect repairs." Suddenly he stabs a finger toward various crewmen, barking out orders. "Piebald, I want that mainmast cut down and jettisoned by noon! Cato, salvage what you can before they huck the mast! Horace, get down in the hold and check for leaks and cracks! Gaston, assess the armaments and look for any damage! Tula, where are those guards we hired!?"

Tula raises a hand and points to you. "Here, Cap'n."

Renchild looks to you. "You will accompany the party ashore. Piebald and a gang of swabs will find a new mast. You will survey the island for provisions. Much of our food and water was spoiled when their containers broke and were fouled with seawater. We have at most a week's worth. If we go back to Bonetown to re-provision we will miss our drop date. That is unacceptable." He crosses his arms. "I do not know if this island is inhabited, but I'm sending you on the riskier job since you have the skills necessary. You will leave in a rowboat tomorrow morning." He watches you for a moment, then turns and swiftly goes back into his quarters, slamming the door behind him.

ooc: Take it away, Cayzle.

Having just remembered that he has some skill in Craft(Carpentry), Yel'kno will move to help Cato with the mast for the rest of the day since they won't be heading out until tomorrow.

When tomorrow comes, he'll be ready with his weapons and armor to enter the rowboat. "What do you think the odds are that this island is home to those cultist we ran out of Bonetown?" he muses.

Sighing with relief that the storm is over, Dilantar listens to the captain's orders and goes to ready his gear for the supply run on the morrow.

After waking up, Dilantar dons his armor, dagger and crossbow, which is preloaded with 1 of his 2 sleeping poison bolts, and reports to Tula. hearing Yel'kno's comment about the aforementioned cult, Dilantar sighs and says The way our luck has been running I wouldn't be surprised. Well, if we do come across them, at least we don't have to feel badly about taking thier supplies.

Spire utters another quick prayer to whoever happens to be listening, and immediately goes down into his room to fetch his things. He leafs through his spellbook as he walks back on deck, looking over what spells might be helpful. Spire also tries to figure out what language they would speak on this island, wondering if he should prepare his spell to help communicating as such. (Kn: Geo 11, Linguistics 19) Spire chortles when Yel'Kno brought up the cultists. "And to think I had almost forgotten about them. Yes, knowing our streak, they sent that storm to beach us and are currently waiting for us on shore."

New scene and DM post coming up this evening!

Co-DM Cayzle
Friday May 25th, 2012 12:01:46 AM

The captain has ordered you to take the ship's longboat out in the morning with a shore crew. The Lionfish can't get close in, since the ocean-going keel that let the ship survive the storm would be ground to bits on the reef that surrounds the atoll.

Here is an idea of what the atoll looks like from the air and from the beach.

The captain watches as you board the longboat and set out.

Yelkno wonders whether the cultists from Bonetown might be here. Piebald laughs. "We be two hundreds of leagues south by east of Bonetown. There be no cultists here. Just look at this tiny place! Lord knows what the Captain thinks might be a danger here."

Dilantar expects the worst, however, and gears up appropriately.

Spire preps his universal translation spell. Perhaps he will need it.

Jozhur seems eager for a fight.

All this talk of fighting and cultists has Coerator expecting an opportunity for bloodshed. But in fact, as the crew swish the oars through the water, as the sun shines down, as the warm breezes ruffle through your hair, your thoughts of conflict seem at odds with this peaceful island oasis in the desert of the ocean.

Piebald directs the sailer on the tiller to direct the boat to the largest island. You see that it is covered in a mix of tangled underbrush and coconut trees. As you prepare to land on the beach, what security measures do you take, if any? How do you disembark? Any special precautions?

[OOC: It is now a new day, so please list your spells prepped immediately!]

As the longboat beaches, Spire, Coer, and Dilantar ready weapons for any immediate threat.

Jozhur spies a plinth or obelisk at the treeline. The 5 x 5 x 25 ft high column rises from a natural outcrop of limestone. It looks weathered.

"Lem's Lugnuts!" curses Piebald, with a blasphemous oath. "I've heard of these things, and they mean bad news!"

OOC: Hope everybody had a happy Memorial Day, at least in the U.S. We had parade, pool and barbecue, so pretty traditional!

The party takes a closer look at the plinth. Once close enough to see it, Coerator sees there is text on one side: GET OUT! TRESPASSERS GET OUT! THIS PLACE IS NOT FOR YOU!

Spire detects no magic. However, he suspects this object was raised by magic, long ago. The monument and the letters are a little more than somewhat weathered by wind and sea spray.

Jozhur asks Piebald what it means. "I'll tell yas waht it means! It means if whosoever owns this place comes back when we're here, we'll be sorry! COME ONE, YOU LUGS! We have a tree to fell! Keep a sharp eye, you guards!" He chivvies the work crew to their duty, and a suitable tree is soon found.

The work crew gets right to the job of felling a tree that will become a new mast, not far from the plinth. At about that same time, Jozhur hears a low grunt from the underbrush -- and the rustling that follows suggests some mass. Some creature, maybe a big one, is stalking the party.

It gets to about 40 feet away while remaining under the cover of the thick underbrush. If it comes closer, it will have to emerge from its total concealment.

There is no chance of surprise, since you are all alert. Spire does detect magic in the area, but that's just one round of the required three for full info.

If you can make a listen check vs DC20, you can pinpoint the creature's square, but you still have a 50% miss chance on ranged attacks (and you cannot target it with spells that require line of sight).

We're in combat, so please do post a single round of actions in your next post.

Sorry friends -- tomorrow's post, along with a time-sucking battle map, will come in the morning.

Co-DM Cayzle
Friday June 1st, 2012 7:00:41 AM

Well, before your DM can start this fight, he feels it only fair to allow you to place yourself on the map.

The Map!

Please post your coordinates. Also feel free to revise your actions for the first round. You are the purple squares. The workers chopping the tree are the blue squares. the light green is underbrush. The darker green is heavy underbrush. The brown circles are trees.

Trees: A creature standing in the same square as a tree gains partial cover, which grants a +2 bonus to Armor Class and a +1 bonus on Reflex saves. The presence of a tree doesn't otherwise affect a creature's fighting space, because it's assumed that the creature is using the tree to its advantage when it can. The trunk of a typical tree has AC 4, hardness 5, and 150 hp. A DC 15 Climb check is sufficient to climb a tree.

Undergrowth: Vines, roots, and short bushes cover much of the ground in a forest. A space covered with light undergrowth costs 2 squares of movement to move into, and provides concealment. Undergrowth increases the DC of Acrobatics and Stealth checks by 2 because the leaves and branches get in the way.

Heavy undergrowth costs 4 squares of movement to move into and provides concealment with a 30% miss chance (instead of the usual 20%). It increases the DC of Acrobatics checks by 5. Heavy undergrowth is easy to hide in, granting a +5 circumstance bonus on Stealth checks. Running and charging are impossible. Squares with undergrowth are often clustered together. Undergrowth and trees aren't mutually exclusive; it's common for a 5-foot square to have both a tree and undergrowth.

You have heard the sound in the generally northwest part of the map.

Jozhur, Please Highlight to display spoiler: {The creature is at 5C.}

Co-DM Cayzle - Boar Fight Round One  d100=29 ; d20=6 ; d6=4 ; d6=3 ;
Monday June 4th, 2012 6:28:13 PM

In the top half of Round 1, Jozhur calls out an alert, while some of the others jockey for position, ready attacks, or just stand fast.

The Large Wild Boar in the brush near 5C charges Dilantar. As it emerges from the heavy underbrush, it is first visible in the light underbrush, where is is only partially obscured. It is clearly charging, that is, attacking, and so it triggers a readied attack by Yelk'no, but alas, not Coer, since the beast is, at that moment, out of the taur's long reach, and remains out of reach through the end of the round, just beyond the taur's long arms.

By the way, Dilantar, did you want to have a "readied" attack, or did you just mean you would be ready in a metaphorical sense? If the former, you need to roll an attack and damage, as well as a miss chance for the light underbrush. In general, the DM is a happier camper when players preroll-out readied attacks beforehand.

As the beast emerges, the light underbrush still grants it a 20 percent miss chance. Yel'kno's readied bowshot hits AC14, as the kindly DM rolls a miss chance of 29% -- no prob. The beast's charge gives it a -2 penalty on AC, just enough to make it vulnerable to the arrow. Still, a glancing blow for a mere hit point of damage is hardly a scratch [OOC: Considering your DM's confusion over PC placement, there is no penalty this round for shooting through Coer's large form standing right in front of you. But next time ...]

If Dilantar has readied an attack, here is where it could be inserted.

Jozhur has already announced the thing's location and alerts all. No surprises.

Spire, not seeing the boar at first, moves to Q10 and casts a spell. His friends are between him and the boar.

Coer, unable to use his readied attack, seems set for a new round, at least.

And the Boar, advancing out of the underbrush entirely, makes his attack on Dilantar, at +2, striking AC 16, a hit for a hideous blow that topples the alchemist! The boar inflicts 16 hp damage!

For round two, post your actions, then the Boar will get in his licks.

Spire rushes forward, concerned about the fallen Dilantar. He pulls an arrow from his quiver as he runs, and stops to fire it at the ginormous boar. He shoots true for 6 hp damage.

Jozhur carefully circles around to the rear of the beast. It keeps a wary eye on him.

OOC: You can't hide after an engagement starts if the enemy has line of sight to you. Even if you have cover and/or concealment. A non-exhaustive list of exceptions to the rule are things like: (a) You achieve total concealment, as with invisibility, or total cover, which breaks line of sight; (b) You make a bluff check to create diversion before attempting to hide (at a penalty); (c) You start the engagement hidden and you are using the sniping rules; (d) you use the Hide In Plain Sight ability, or something like it.

Coer takes a step forward and rakes the boar with sword, fist, and horns. He strikes home with 14 damage via temple sword and 6 nore with a gore!

OOC: Some DMs might not agree, but I have no problem with a flurry of blows in addition to a natural attack -- but the natural attack is a secondary attack at -5. Looks to me like you took that into account, so good job.

Yel'kno dashes forward as he drops his bow and draws his rapier. Which he immediately puts to expert use, driving the thin but sharp blade deep into the porker's liver for 13 more damage.

Having taken a massive 39 damage this round, the wild boar squeals like a stuck pig, turns, and runs off. Yel'kno and Coer may take AoOs vs an AC15 if they like as it runs off to the southwest. If it lives, it uses a run action to move 120 ft away, ignoring the punitive hinderance of the underbrush

The work crew, which had looked ready to bolt (except for one up the tree), stops when they realize the danger is passing.

The assumption is that all participants in a fight, friend and foe can see and are watching each other at all times. When Yel'kno shouts, "Looks like we're having pork tonight!" the work crew put up a cheer. That cheer redoubles when Coer hacks the wild boar down as it turns to flee.

"Boys, that's good eatin'! " declares Piebald.

But before that, there's another side of tortured meat to take care of. Fortunately, under the influence of Yel'kno's wand, the fallen Dilantar is soon back on his feet, howsoever unsteadily. OOC: Please do track that healing! There may be dangers yet about.

Wisely, Jozhur does not take the group's safety for granted. From the height of a tall coconut tree, he can see the entire island, from the wave-tossed breakers on the outer reef to the brilliant blue waters of the calm inner lagoon. He can see several thick patches of bramble in the middle of the small island, presumably in which this creature, and likely its kin, have laired. But for the moment, he spies no sign of danger.

The crew works hard to fell the future mast of the Lionfish, and then to rig a travois to drag the porcine carcass to the beach.

"It'll take such a fire to cook this porker," says Piebald, "that we'll have to set the cooking blaze ashore." He sets the men to gathering firewood. He also dispatches a messenger off to the ship to send the news.

OOC to Coer: Glad your wife was inspired to cook you a pork dinner! Next, let's hope she's inspired to join the Wold! We always need new players!

Coer keeps a keen eye out from the ground, while Jozhur does the same from a vantage point high in a tree. Coer sees a natural path, or rather, a less overgrown section of underbrush, that he thinks is a path worn by piggies trotting down to the beach and back. There are signs that porkers like to eat coconuts. Jozhur thinks he gets a wriggle of underbrush, as if of creatures moving through it, at the center of the isle.

Spire helps Dilantar, then stays ready for other foes.

Yel'kno heals his friend.

Dilantar himself fiddles with his alchemy, and soon is right as rain.

Word comes back from the ship that there will be a ham feast this evening, and the cook comes back with the longboat to prepare for the meal. The ship carpenter also comes to work with the crew on the soon-to-be-a-mast.

Captain Renchild orders an extra ration of rum to go with the feast, and as the setting sun sets the ocean ablaze, the juices from the ham flow freely as lips are smacked and rashers are gobbled. Only a skeleton crw is left aboardship.

Any special actions before or during the feast?

Playing it safe, the people charged with security act wisely as the feast gets underway.

Coer points out the pig run and correctly interprets the signs that the porkes have left on the island. His gut tells him that there are more around somewhere.

Yel'kno prepares a ring of tiki torches around the feast, which not only lends a festive touch, but also ensures good visibility.

Jozhur continues his careful watch, returning to his crow's nest after grabbing a quick ham dinner. So he has the best view when the horns blow.

As twilight falls, Dilantar removes the goggles he wears in the daytime to protect his sensitive drow eyes. He passes on the rum, seeking a clear head. When the horn sounds, he readies his weapon.

Spire grabs his bow at the first sign of trouble. He intuits that the owners of the carved stone obelish have returned.

From his high perch as the sun passes below the horizon, Jozhur sees that several creatures are emerging from the waters at the center of the lagoon. They seem humanoid, or maybe merfolk, since you cannot see their legs/tails. They are clearly aquatic.

Captain Renchild shouts, "You mercenaries! Go see what this is all about! Take Tula so you can send her back with word of what is going on. The rest of you, pack up and form a defensive perimeter around the fire. As much as I want to get back to the Lionfish, if it comes to a fight, we'll stand a better chance on the ground."

He does send Piebald and a few crew to check on the longboats. BTW, note that the Lionfish is anchored beyond the islands, outside the atoll, not in the lagoon. That's because her deep keel would have crashed on the surrounding reef had she tried to pass over to get into the lagoon.

At the lagoon, you once again hear the horns, as of conch-shells blowing. From the waters you see medium sized humanoids, some mounted on some kind of sea horses. There are about 20 of them.

Coer, Dilantar, and Spire invite the elves to take a look. About 12 elves accompany you. They peer at Dilantar most curiously. One asks, in elvish, "What are you, brother?" Another shushes the curious one and whispers -- loud enough to be overheard, in elvish, "That's one of those Dark Elves! Watch out for them! They use poison!"

A little further inland, where the feast was being held, you now see no one except Captain Renchild, Piebald, and another burly sailor. Everyone else is gone, and feast hastily abandoned. Renchild beckons you over, and says, "Let me go over to the Lionfish to get a gift for these noble elves. Maybe that will show our friendliness. I'll send it back in the longboat. Meanwhile, make sure you see that these folks remain very friendly!"

His words a stilted, and a little out of character. That's because they carry a concealed message. His Bluff check to make his true meaning clear is a 31, so you understand exactly what he is getting at:

Under absolutely NO circumstances at all are you to let these elves on the Lionfish! Not even in earshot! We'll set off and leave you here before we let them get onboard! Our mission depends on it!

If you make a Sense Motive check vs DC13, then Highlight to display spoiler: {You feel he is nervous.}.

If you beat a DC26, then Highlight to display spoiler: {Renchild is hiding something important.}

He turns and heads off to the other side, where the longboat waits to take him to the Lionfish, presumably, Keep in mind this is a tiny island -- you can walk across in a few minutes, easy.

The elves hear that the Captain wants to give them a gift, and they ask what gift is planned. One elf speculates hopefully that it will be glass beads. Another is hoping for honey.

The leader is having none of that nonsense. He wants to see the scene of the battle. And he is not pleased at the sight of the tree stump. Several elves gasp at the ruin of hackery. "Brutes," one mutters in Aquan.

The leader grins. "This 'gift' may pay for all, but let us enjoy this feast your have laid out for us, even if you did start without us and run away when she arrived. And after the feast, we'll have a melee! We'll let you go if you can defeat our champion!"

Your response to that? Whatever you ask, the elves just grin if you ask them to describe the champion. They seem to think all of you against one champion would be a fair fight. But nonlethal damage ONLY!

Jozhur and then Yel'kno ask what happens if the party loses.

A fair sea-elf maid, with pale silver hair that looks lovely with her green complexion, calls out, in elvish, "Father! Father! That one is so handsome!" She giggles, pointing to the charming half-elf, Yel'kno. "Say that if they lose, he has to marry me!"

"Now, Adrina," the leader of the elves answers, in the same tongue, "You know you cannot marry until your sister Aquata marries first. She is older than you."

"But father!" Adrina pouts, putting the cutest moue of frustration on her lovely dark green lips, "Well, what if he promises to marry me after Aquata gets married? We would be betrothed!"

"Hmmm ..." The father ponders the question, and then nods. "Agreed! If you and your friends lose," he says to Yel'kno, "you must agree to be affianced to my impetuous daughter!"

Goodness, she certainly doesn't waste any time Smiling in a friendly manner at the questions of what he is, and not letting the remark about Drow alter his face, Dilantar considers which path he should take. On the one hand, Yel'kno is a friend and has agreed to the bethrothal, however he seems a little reluctant to follow through. On the other hand, there is no guarentee that the champion will hold back, and the fact that the sea elves assume that fighting their group won't be that much of a challenge for him is worrisome. While thinking through all of this, Dilantar starts as he realizes he ignored the question of what he is, even if another of the elves answered it already. Adressing the asker of the question, and the one who responded as well, Dilantar begins in elvish I must apoligize for not answering the question right away, I have had much to think on recently and have recently brushed with death, so I am a little out of sorts. However it seems at least one of your number is familiar with my kind. Yes I am a Drow, however the only poison I use is one that will make the target fall asleep, nothing more. Additionally, it is a rather long process to make said poison, so I never have much on hand. Also, I am one of the Surface Drow, those who rejected the teachings of old, and want to live in peace with the other races of the surface world if possible. Sadly, my race's reputation is not so good on the surface, with good reason, so this has been a sort of uphill battle for me and those like me. If you have any other questions, please don't heistate to ask, I am quite relaxed about my heritage and will not take offense at most things he ends with a smile. Being curious about the sea elves, Dilantar decides to ask a few questions, If you don't mind me asking, your kind lives in the sea, correct? I find that fascinating, how would one go about the alchemical trade while underwater? I would find it difficult to apply my knowledge of alchemical substances if I had to create and use them underwater for the greater part of my life.

OOC: Woohoo! Five of five player posts are in! That means a second DM post today to make up for none yesterday! I just hope Sherriff Ken gives me the credit for it! There's a new lawman in town, pardners, and he's shooting first and asking questions later!

The sea elf leader nods at Yel'kno's agreement, grins at him, shakes his hand, and says to his daughter, "Okay, go over to your beau, give him a kiss, ask him his name, and lead him and his friends to the beach. That's where we'll have our contest."

She does so, shyly at first, and then with enthusiasm. In elvish, she says. "I'm Adrina. Don't worry about the water. We have magic that will let you breathe and swim, easy peasy! That would be a great bride-gift!"

"What's your name?"

As the party walks to the beach, Dilantar takes the opportunity to speak with several curious sea elves who are unfamiliar with the surface drow. They are eager to hear his words. When Dilantar talks about the challenges his people have faced, one says, "Well, at least there are three elves in your group. When we hear tales of adventurers, usually there are not many elves, if any."

Jozhur, Spire, and Coer walk along to the beach near the lagoon, where first you met these elves, as two of Yel'kno's friends find it hard to hide their laughter at his predicament.

At the shore, a sea elf has drawn a wide semicircle in the sand. At the center of the semicircle, right in the surf, is a half-submerged, tentacled monstrosity, as big as Coer! The sea elf leader laughs, and says, "Don't worry boys! He's a young one! And he's trained not to use his bite. Remember, pull your punches! This is a friendly contest!"

OOC: I'll post a map over the weekend, and you can pick where you want to start the fight. If you inflict any lethal damage at all, you lose! If you knock out the monster, you win. If he knocks out all of you, you lose! The monster is trained to use tentacles only, and he is taking a -4 on attacks so as to only inflict nonlethal damage. You might want to review the rules for nonlethal damage.

Yel'kno grins at the elven maiden in turn and walks to the beach beside her, "My name is Ye'kno... I must admit I am not familiar with your customs, but are all possible betrothals with your people decided upon so suddenly?"

And then the tentacled beast appears in the waves. Yel'kno stares at it in silence a moment, trying to figure out what it is, and then removes his weapons belt and bow, offering them out to Adrina, "Would you hold these for me? It looks like I'll have my hands full enough as it is."

Spire retreats a bit when the monster emerges so it's just within the range of his bow. He draws an arrow, aiming for a spot that wouldn't do much damage. "Here's to Yel'kno," he calls out, lining up his shot. "May he see tomorrow's sunrise a bachelor still."

Cayzle Comments: Note that you can change melee weapon damage from lethal to nonlethal by taking a -4 on your attack. You cannot do the same with ranged weapons. Unless you have specially blunted arrows or the merciful weapon quality, etc.

Dilantar stares at the octopus for a moment, Interesting... and puts his crossbow and bombs on the ground, hmmm I should look into some non-lethal bomb ingredients and draws his dagger. Well this ought to be an interesting fight Dilantar quaffs his infusion(+dex, -will), grows slightly more bestial, with a faint outline of scales on his skin, and his pupils become slits. Let us begin the party he says in a snarl. Dilantar charges the octopus. (Nonlethal damage -4 to hit, charge +2 to hit, charge -2 to AC) Still not used to his new form, Dilantar fails his charge horribly and stumbles in front of the octopus, not exactly in his best stance. ((2 to hit, misses horribly :( Current AC is 16/12/12))

OOC: This is the map I should have posted over the weekend. Sorry, friends. I'm laid up with a bad cold. So let this be the DM post for Monday.

Here is the map.

The dry sand and the pounding surf are difficult terrain.

An elf caster puts a spell on the octopus so it can breathe air.

The only rule is to use only nonlethal damage.

Pick ANY place on the outside of the circle to be your starting point. Then post a turn that includes either a five ft step or a move action to enter the circle. You can also attack, but getting there in one rond may be difficult. You can keep rolls already made or reroll -- that's my reward for thinking ahead to make rolls before combat!

Then the octopus will act, to end round one.

Good luck! And thanks for your patience.

OOC :: Begin at AA11, move 25ft to V11, cast Flare Burst on P12. DC 15 Fort save or be dazzled for 1 minute.

Spire moves forward and casts Flare Burst. The Fort save DC is 15 or be dazzled for 10 rounds. The monster's Fort save is at +9, and it rolls a 22. It is unaffected.

Yel'kno moves from B11 to H11 on the hard wet sand. NOTE! The Wet sand is not difficult terrain! Yel'kno, you have only made a move action. You have another move action or a standard action this round.

Jozhur moves 40 feet in towards the creature, from AA10 to S10, across the hard wet sand. He seems wary of closing with the beast.

Coer moves in even closer -- just at the octopus's reach, but not further in.

Dilantar moves in right behind the Taur.

The octopus takes a five ft step and flails away with all its tentacles at the biggest and closest target, the Taur. The eight attacks hit AC9, 13, 19, 16, 14, 12, 11, and a crit threat that confirms vs AC19. Coer is AC15, so that's two regular hits and one crit for total 4d4+12 = 22 nonlethal damage. With only 19 hp, Coer is knocked unconscious!

Octopus: AC18, Touch 11.
Damage: none.

And the map!

OOC: Friends, note that the wet sand is NOT difficult terrain!

Sadly, Coer lies in a lump, knocked out cold.

Brave Jozhur fights on, moving to O11 to attack. Ducking under the monster's flailing tentacles (they have reach), he provokes an AoO, which hits AC13. Whew! And the thing only gets one AoO per round.

Then it is Jozhur's turn, but the champion's attack falls short, with a miss.

Spire runs to the fallen Coer, careful to keep the fallen tar's body between himself and the giant octopus. He calls for the party wand of healing, but ... it is safe and sound in Yel'kno's belt pouch, with 22 charges remaining, by your DM's calculaiton, and quite out of reach.

Yel'kno moves in, attacks, and lands a solid blow. A cheer goes up from several of the sea elf maids watching outside the circle. "Ye'kno! My hero!" shouts Adrina, and she blows you a kiss.

Yel'kno, if you so desire it, you may accept a +1 morale bonus to attacks and damage next round, as you are cheered on by your potential fiance.

Alas, Dilantar hesitates ... [OOC: Because I am a kindly DM, Dilantar may post two rounds of action if he posts on time. I'll note that's more kind than two of my own DMs, who in the recent past have denied me combat actions because of late posts! Who says I'm not ubersweet?!]

The Octopus, attacked on both sides, lashes out at both his foes, Yel'kno -- hit once -- and Jozhur -- hit twice! Yel'kno takes 6 nonlethal, and Jozhur takes 12 nonlethal.

Octopus: AC18, Touch 11.
Damage: has taken 4 nonlethal.

And the map!

Map notes: The red aura around Coer shoes him to be unconscious. Note that Jozhur and Yel'know both have to take 5-ft steps forward if they want to flank the octopus. That means the first to step forward is not flanking unless he uses the Delay or Ready actions to let his pal catch up.

Yel'kno lands another blow -- so far he is the only one to do so. "Hooray!" shouts Adrina, and several other elves join in the praise. Yel'kno, your morale bonus rises to +2 to attack and damage.

With a move action remaining, Yel'kno pulls out his wand, and takes a five foot step.

Coer continues to enjoy his restful nap on a mattress of wet sand.

Dilantar, having confirmed that Coer is okay, has moved and drawn a weapon. Now he charges! Doing that draws an AoO from the octopus, and a tentacle hits AC21, landing a blow on Dilantar for 7 hp nonlethal damage!

Taking the blow in stride, Dilantar attacks, and would have hit, but trying to avoid bloodying the beast imposes a cost, and this time, the cost is a failure to hurt it at all.

Spire, feeling helpless, is not sure what to do! [OOC: Aid Another and flanking are things you might consider! Also see the new rules in Pathfinder APG for dirty tricks. Also alchemists can use wands of CLW just fine.] Feel free to post an action if you like.

Jozhur takes a five foot step, now flanking the beast with Yel'kno. But with the extra +2 he still falls short. Unless Spire moves up and aids his friend, that's a miss.

The octopus rears up and attacks!

Using a d3 to divide attacks, the beast strikes at Yel'kno once, Dilantar three times, and Jozhur four times!

The beast misses Yel'kno (there are squeals of delight from the audience), hits Dilantar twice for total 11 damage, knocking him down, and hits Jozhur for 10 damage, knocking him down too!

Yel'kno strikes hard again, the third time in three rounds! The elf maiden squeals in delight, and the sound inspires Yel'kno to further heroism [OOC: please accept a +3 on attacks and damage next round -- if you get a chance to use it!].

Then Yel'kno compounds his prowess with mercy for his friends, taking a five ft step closer to Dilantar and using a wand to rouse him.

"Well, it seems you picked a good one," the elf leader remarks to his daughter.

Coer dreams.

Jozhur dreams with him.

Dilantar dreams too, but he is awakened and finds himself on the ground. Of course, if he were to provoke an AoO by getting up, it might all be for nought. What will he do?

Spire tries to help his friends, but luck is just not with him, and his efforts to offer aid turn out badly. "At least he is trying," one elf maid, a friend of Adrina, says consolingly.

The octopus now has only his one true enemy left, and a miserable Spire. He swipes Spire once with one tentacle, and aims the other seven at Yel'kno!

Spire, it misses you.

Seven tentacles lash out! There is a gasp from Adrina! One hit is a crit threat that is not confirmed. Two more tentacles land. The total damage is 3d4+9 ... the damage is exactly 16! And Yel'kno has exactly 16 hp!

Per the rules, "When your nonlethal damage equals your current hit points, you're staggered. You can only take a standard action or a move action in each round (in addition to free, immediate, and swift actions). You cease being staggered when your current hit points once again exceed your nonlethal damage." Note that you do not lose any more hp by acting (as opposed to when you are dying with negative hp).

Jozhur lies limp at the water's edge. He tries to stare at the giant octopus, but everything is so blurry...he knows there is no getting on his feet.

Spire's head whips around as someone calls out something in reference to him. His heart is pounding too heard to hear them properly, but he jumps to his feet and begins to launch sand at the Octopus to distract it. (Aid Another 13... man, I hope this works.)

Jozhur and Coer lie still, unconscious.

Dilantar tries to rise, and doing so provokes an AoO from the octopus. It lashes out and hits AC12, a miss! He tries to fight, but misses.

Yel'kno tries for one more blow, and manages to hit with the assistance of his friend, Spire. Yel'kno lands 9 hp of nonlethal damage on the octopus, which flinches back.

The octopus divides its attacks at random among Yel'kno (4 tentacles), Spire (2), and Dilantar (2). It hits AC22, a hit that drives our hero into unconsciousness. An attack misses. An attack hits Dilantar and drives him into unconsciousness. Finally, five attacks on Spire hit twice, for 10 nonlethal. With only 9 hp, Dilantar falls to -1, and the last of our heroes hits the sand.

...

...

You all awake at the place on the beach at which you had been feasting with the crew. You all have gained 1 hero points; Yel'kno, Dilantar and Spire, you have earned two. Yel'kno, you find a ring on the ring finger of your left hand. You soon find it is magical. There are no signs of elves or octopus anywhere.

Coer awakens to see the empty beach.

Wait... what happened. Did we win?

Yel'kno wakes up with a groan and turns just his head to look at the Minotaur. "No... I
Believe that we, and," he adds as he looks at the new ring on his finger, "thus the women of Bonetown, have lost.". He sits up then to look down at his legs. "hmm... Thought I would wake up with a ball chained to my leg."

And then he stands up and pats himself down and looks at the ground, looking for that overpriced wand he bought... And looks out to sea to be sure their employer didn't sail off without them.

Ugh, remind me next time we speak with sea elves to prepare something less lethal than bombs. That was a little embarrassing. Is everyone ok? Dilantar also looks around for their crew and employer.

Jozhur groans, "Ohhggh, my head. Think I'm in one piece though. Where's your lovely bride Yel'kno?"

He checks the area for any sign of the elves or anything they left behind.

Perception: 22

Spire awakens slowly, groaning through the pain. "Ye Gods... just what in the Wold was that?" He looks over at Yel'Kno, quickly scrambling to his feet when he sees the ring. His eyes glow blue with Detect Magic as he tries to determine the item's origin. (Spellcraft 17, unless I can take 10, in which case 23)

The heroes look around, a little more than somewhat dazed.

Yel'kno and Jozhur look around. The wand is in a pocket. So too is a token -- in fact, each of you find some item on your persons:

Yel'kno - a lady's comb, carved in polished tortoise shell, with strands of silver hair tangled in it.
Coer - a tiny dolphin carved in polished black coral.
Dilantar - A small obsidian vial filled with a liquid - a perfume made of ambergris.
Jozhur - a small fine pearl.
Spire - a star carved in mother-of-pearl

None of these are magical. Each would be worth about 200 gp.

Spire deduces that Yel'kno's ring is basically imbued with the enchantment school. And something else -- it seems linked to him somehow. It is a magic unfamiliar to him.

Dilantar reports that the Lionfish is still offshore. There is a longboat waiting at the outer beach, with a couple sailors waiting.

"I'm tired of this island, lets return to the boat."

Coer stomps off rubing the bruises he recieved from the crafty cephalopod.

Spire informs Yel'Kno of his new ring, as well as his complete ignorance to its true purpose. "I tire of our luck," he responds to Coer, looking as sour as ever as he rubs his bruises. "Let's get this stinking mission over with. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss Bonetown."

Yel'kno finds that the ring does not easily come off.

The party oars it back to the Lionfish, which seems to be on fire! No, wait, it is just ablaze with lanterns and torches as the crew works madly to raise the new mast as quick as possible.

Renchild grins like a madman when he sees them! "Are they coming here? Did you get rid of them? How?" he calls down to you.

As you climb up onto the deck, he claps Coer on the back, hard. "Scared them off, did you, minotaur? A hard fellow for a hard job, I always say."

Yel'kno frowns down at the ring when it does not come off, but he cannot say he is surprised. He looks up at Renchild with a grin, "It seems the elf maidens just wanted some companionship. Pity you returned to the ship and missed out of the fun. Can't say I have had such a... Rigorous courtship in quite some time. I'll have bruises for a week."

"but I think the ship is safe. Once the mast is repaired we should be free to go."

Spire simply nods as Yel'Kno tells the captain what happened. If they're still needed on deck, Spire stay on and do his work begrudgingly. Otherwise, he retreats belowdeck and pours over his books.

Jozhur hangs around on deck to see if any help is needed with repairs.
