Attack on the Warehouse

Co-DM Cayzle
Tuesday February 14th, 2012 5:13:18 PM

Urged on by Rogar, the group has made it back to Bonetown before nightfall.

Alphonse send his familiar a-scouting. The building is one story, and flat-roofed. With little to no snow usual here-abouts, there is no need for a sloped roof. Crackerjack reports a trapdoor on the roof that he sees. No guards are out on the roof, nor any patrolling outside.

It is as Dilantar and Giada reported earlier: a hastily thrown up building, and poorly maintained. The unpainted plank walls of the one-story building offer little in the way of structural or physical strength. You see the one door -- big enough to fit a couple centaurs -- and no other entrance or exit -- aside from the rooftop trapdoor that your earlier investigation did not reveal.

The building stands alone, not pressing up against any other building. On two sides there is open field -- mostly cropped short by wandering pigs and sheep, or churned by hooves of beasts hauling wagons. The harbor and wharves are a couple blocks away. On the other two sides are other buildings -- the rear of a flophouse on one side, and another warehouse on the other.

Alphonse and Jozhur favor stealth. Yel'kno mentions trickery and bluff. Spre and Dilantar talk about blowing your way in.

Decisions?

Spire speaks up, saying, "If our friend from the woods prefers stealth, perhaps that is the best route. We have someone go in disguised as the man we captured earlier. Sir, uhh... Jozhur, was it? With Alphonse and I distracting the guard, it should be easy for you to get in. With two people inside the warehouse, we have a better chance of getting him out here. Once we have Lansel, we blow a hole in the wall and..." He pauses, shrugging and sighing. "Well, I suppose we run. To our rooms would be safest. They'll be looking for Lansel back at the temple."

(Brock) Jozhur AC16/14/12--CMD 16--HP 9/9
Tuesday February 14th, 2012 10:08:24 PM

"Yes, just call me Jozhur. I have no issues with any of the entry methods. However, given the shoddy construction of this building, it may be best to avoid explosives unless they can be placed so that they don't harm the structural integrity of the building. The trapdoor on the roof could also make for an interesting approach, the choice is up to you all."

"By the way, I just washed up on the shore at Goodie's place recently. I've never even been into town before now. I would certainly trust your judgement over mine until I get to know this place a little better."

ooc: Ignore Jozhur's backstory for now, it needs some adjustment.

"I think we should try the roof and the trap door. It may not be the best way to enter but we could get some intel from listening. Until we know where Lansel is inside I think blowing open the wall is risky. He could be right on the other side and in bad shape." Rogar says.

(Josh) Alphonse AC 13/13/10 CMD 13 HP 5/6
Wednesday February 15th, 2012 2:29:04 PM

"I'd much prefer to go in through the trapdoor," says Alphonse once Crackerjack has returned, "and to be perfectly frank, these men must all die. I'm never in favor of killing when I don't have to, but if we don't end their lives there's a damn good chance they'll hunt us down and end our while we sleep some night. If we're going to rescue Lansel, I think we have to prepare ourselves to kill everyone who sees us."

Alphonse lets gives his words a moment to sink in.

"In addition, once we're done here I think we should pay a visit to the high priest you were all talking about earlier. I'd put money on his involvement in all this."

Scratching his beard, Alphonse thinks.

"I move that Spire and I drop the burning pepper in through the trapdoor. Then, when the cultists come running out of the door, you lot dispatch them one by one. Lansel's eyes and nose will be a little worse for the wear, but at least he should be alive. Oh, and Baird, would you mind healing me? This is still a bit...tender," he says, pointing to his blood-soaked sleeve.

Yel'kno (Jon) AC 17/14/13 CMD 16 HP 10/11
Wednesday February 15th, 2012 2:56:04 PM

"Maybe you'll have to blow the trap door?" Yel'kno asks, seeming a little disappointment they might not get to use some more of Dilanter's fiery bombs, on the building at least. "But, it sounds as good a plan as any. I'll take the left side of the door."

(Ian) Spirysn'rar Kilarn AC 14/14/10 - CMD 14 - HP 6/6
Wednesday February 15th, 2012 3:49:53 PM

"I'm not suggesting we blow the wall to get in; I'm suggesting we blow it to get out. The trapdoor is a fine way to get in, but climbing a rope back onto the roof might be difficult, especially for Lansel. This way, we simply make a door." He looks at Alphonse as he speaks, his eyebrows slightly arched. "As for slaughtering the men... while I have to problem with having to kill a few on the way out, killing every single one may be... well, for lack of a better word, overkill. If it comes to that, then so it does, but our main concern should be getting Lansel out of there."

Co-DM Cayzle
Wednesday February 15th, 2012 3:52:38 PM

As the group discusses plans, the consensus drifts toward the trap door.

OOC: I need some climb checks or other plans to get up on the roof, then stealth checks to walk on top without making noisy footsteps.

(Joel) Dilantar Krenwae'afein AC 15/13/12 - CMD 13 - HP 8/8()
Wednesday February 15th, 2012 9:58:59 PM

Dilantar looks thoughtful, and agrees that the trapdoor is a better option. "Why dont try getting in with a disguise and if that works save trap door as an escape route. If it fails we can go with Alphose's plan of throwing pepper down the hatch if anyone is near the trap door.

(Brock) Jozhur AC16/14/12--CMD 16--HP 9/9  d20=6 ;
Thursday February 16th, 2012 12:19:32 AM

"Whatever we decide on, having the explosives prepped and ready in case things go sour is a good idea. However, I'd like to avoid using explosives while we are inside that building unless we absolutely have to. I'm also not too sure we should count on the trapdoor as an escape method, there may not be a way to reach it or open it from the inside."

If Spire and Alphonse are dropping in pepper bombs, Jozhur will attempt to find something to conceal himself behind near the door, shortsword drawn. Stealth check 6+8=14.

"What I mean, Spire is that if we don't kill these men, they are almost certainly going to hunt us down and kill us while we sleep. I doubt fanatical religious devotees that are willing to kidnap a cleric are simply going to forgive and forget a group of would-be adventurers breaking down the door of their lair and killing a few of them, while absconding with their hostage

Alphonse begins striding towards the building (hopefully after being healed by Baird).

"Regardless, we must act now or Lansel might not live through the night."

Alphonse starts to climb the side of the structure as quietly as possible.

Yel'kno watches as his companions make to climb on top of the building and calmly moves to stand in the street in front of the door. Everyone couldn't go through the trap door if the goal was to have the cultist inside come out. Someone had to stay on the ground to deal with them or at the very least distract them. It would seem he was going to be the one to do that.

He pulled his buckler onto his left arm and rolled his shoulder as he waited. "Dilantar, it seems the plan is to flush them out with the pepper Alphonse found. If it works and they come out, I'll try to get their attention and you see if you can't light their backsides on fire."

If the bomb is going to be dropped immediately, Yel'kno will draw his rapier in his left hand and a dagger in his right standing about fifteen feet from the door. He'll ready an attack to throw the dagger at the first cultist through the door once he's within ten feet and then swap his rapier to his right hand in preperation for melee.

The DC to climb the wall of the building, with its ill-fitting planking and numerous cracks, is a 10.

ALSO, let me repeat my thoughts on the uses of ground pepper. (1) You can use it for a dirty trick in combat., per the dirty trick rule. (2) You can use it as per the APG rules on Sneezing Powder. You cannot imagine either option would drive able-bodied men fleeing from a large building. We're not talking tear gas or a stinking cloud here.

Baird makes short work of healing Alphonse. [OOC: I'm sad to report that Mike Reed and Baird will be leaving the game due to real world pressures. We hope he'll return when he can. In the meantime, Baird will act as an NPC castng cures, and then I'll give him an honorable exit.]

Rogar climbs easily (a move action) and tries to sneak to the trap door (another move action).

Alphonse tries to climb but fails. He tries again and succeeds (OOC: The DM chooses to apply your stealth check to another climb attempt. Hope that's okay.) Alphonse has a short distance to cross to get to the trap door.

Yel'kno moves to the front of the building, near the big front door.

Jozhursneaks next to the big front door, hoping to get the drop on anyone who opens it from the inside.

Dilantar also moves to the front door, ready to throw in a bomb as soon as the door opens.

Spire sticks with those near the front door. He is ready to use his ghost sound spell.

Giada stays near the group in the front for now, too.

All waits on Rogar and Alphonse. What will they do, up there on the roof? And has anyone heard Rogar's tramping? So far, so good?

OOC: Just sayin' --- but I'm a little confused what it is you all think Alphonse and Rogar are going to do up on the roof or through the trap door that will make all the bad guys run blindly out the front door. Maybe I'm missing something?

(Brock) Jozhur AC16/14/12--CMD 16--HP 9/9  d20+5=14 ; d20+5=9 ; d20+10=13 ; d20+10=26 ; d20+4=19 ;

Jozhur chuckles for a moment as Alphonse makes his way up the wall, then looks around, is there a window in the door or the wall anywhere (perception check 13, I goofed that first one should be +4 not 5)?

He then sighs impatiently and moves towards the door.

Barring the presence of any windows, Jozhur will check the door for traps (perception check 9), then try the door handle. If it's locked, he will attempt to pick the lock (Disable device 13, if needed try again for 26), meanwhile listening for any signs that someone is aware the lock is being tampered with (perception 19)

There's no window in the door made of glass, but there is a small shutter that one could easily push open from the outside to peer at visitors. You could likely use a dagger to pry it open unless it is latched from the inside.

The party continues to consider what to do. But Giada takes a direct approach! She tests the door, realizes that it pulls out, and simply opens it!

Inside you see a warehouse partly filled with crates and boxes. There is a light on the inside, where several men are sitting. One man is at the door as Giada enters. They are wearing leather armor.

If you make a perception check (not Rogar nor Jozhur nor Alphonse) vs DC15, then Highlight to display spoiler: {You recognize the one at the door, near you, as the fellow who got away during the bar fight.}

They fail to react as the door swings open.

Here is the map! Note that Alphonse and Rogar are on the roof. The ceiling inside is 10 ft high. The crates are 9 ft high. The boxes are 3 ft high.

We are in round by round combat.

Jozhur moves forward to L8, drawing his sword, keeping pace with Giada.

Dilantar slips inside the building and hucks a bomb at barbarian g1. He hits and inflicts 8 hp of fire damage!

Yel'kno moves to attack the enemy and misses.

Spire steps near to the open door and then casts a spell to enhance his bow.

Baird, hanging back in reserve, awaits the moment his healing power will be essential.

On the roof, Alphonse casts Mage Armor and takes a few steps forward to the trap door.

Rogar pulls open the trap door and hops down through it, landing atop some crates with no problem. The bad news is that there's a barbarian right in front of you (g3, see map). The good news is that the guard seems pretty intoxicated and has no weapons drawn (therefore cannot take advantage of any AoOs Rogar provokes by moving around him). Rogar, pick a landing spot on the interior warehouse map and give me a coordinate within 10 feet of the trap door, please.

Barbarian g1 deems Yel'kno and Baird to be of little concern, as neither even have weapons drawn. He charges Spire. He hits AC 17, a hit, for 12 damage, and Spire, at -6, goes down! The barbarian laughs and shouts, "Run away, kiddies!"

Barbarian g2, no drankard he, swings at Jozhur, hitting AC 19 for 15 damage! Jozhur finds himself at -6, and dying! The barbarian growls and steps closer to Giada.

Barbarian g3 is dying.

Tipsy barbarian g4 throws another javelin at Rogar. It hits AC 16, just missing Rogar!

All Barbarians are AC14 EXCEPT G1, who charged and is at AC12.

Poor Jozhur fails to stabilize.

Yel'kno stands and throws a dagger, hitting barbarian G1 for 4 damage.

Bad luck dogs Giada as she once again swings and misses.

Alphonse picks up a weapon and steps to flank G2 with Giada. His attack falls short, though.

Spire falls unconscious, but manages to stabilize.

Dilantar carefully places a bomb to hurt barbarian G1. The chief of the enemies fails his save and takes 6 more damage. He scowls but is still standing.

Rogar attacks G4 and lands a solid blow.

Baird casts a cure on Yel'kno, healing him for 7 and then moves deeper into the warehouse, trying to circle around the barbarian leader.

THE ENEMY:

Barbarian G1 stands over the helpless Spire, draws out a potion, and drinks it. Some of his wounds close up.

Barbarian G2 takes a five foot step back and swings at Alphonse, hitting him for 11 damage and driving him into unconsciousness!

Barbarian G3 is still dying.

Tipsy barbarian G4 draws his falchion and swings at Rogar. He hits AC14, a miss. He takes a step back.

Yel'kno again used a ranged attack to damage the barbarian chief, G1, who is looking pretty bad off.

Dilantar swings and misses.

Giada's bad luck continues, and she misses.

Rogar attacks twice and misses.

Jozhur's situation grows more dire.

Alphonse and Spire are both down too, but stable.

Baird moves forward to Jozhur and casts a cure on him, healing Jozhur for 9.

Lansel, who is sitting on a box tied up, sticks out his feet and tries to trip barbarian g2. Normally that would provoke an AoO, but the barbarian is taken by surprise. Lansel rolls an 11, however, not enough to trip the barbarian.

THE ENEMY:

Barbarian G1 is well aware that as soon as he stops raging, he'll fall unconscious. One more blow will put him out for good. He swerves around Dilantar, right past Yel'kno, and out the door.

Barbarian G2, unaware that his leader has fled, takes a swing at Giada. His natural 1 is a miss.

Giada steps forward and hits G4 for 3.

Dilantar hustles forward to help Lansel.

Rogar attacks G4 and hits for 6.

Jozhur, back among the conscious, stands up.

Alphonse and Spire are both still down. Baird cures each of them for 6 hp and 4 hp respectively.

Lansel, bound and gagged, nonetheless manages to look really happy.

THE ENEMY:

Standing, Alphonse surveys the scene. After a moment of thought, he walk over to Lansel's chair as a knife materializes in his hand. He cuts the bonds and turns his gaze onto the cowering barbarian.

He'll peer out the door into the street to see if he sees any of the islander's returning (Perception: 10) before moving further into the warehouse.

Letting the others decide what to do with the still living barbarian, Yel'kno sets about dragging the two corpses together and quickly searches them for anything of obvious value, setting anything he finds aside in a pile. That done, he'll look for some rope and a pulley or hook hanging from the ceiling. He's of a mind to leave the still living barbarians and their priest a message for when they return.

If no one else stops him, Alphonse moves to the other two bleeding barbarians and slits their throats as well. (first for 3 dmg, DC 13 fort or die, second for 4 dmg, DC 14 fort or die). The knife disappears and a few waves of his hands have Alphonse's clothes clean and free of blood, both his own and the barbarians' (prestidigitation).

Dear friends,

Although I strongly urge you to fully roleplay your characters and explore the nuances of alignment, I feel compelled to draw your attention to our Wold House Rules on alignment:
"There is no official listing of alignments in the Wold. All characters, however, must be good. Permission must be granted for any non-good alignment situations and logged in the DM's log as an official decision. If at any time a PC becomes non-good without permission, that PC immediately is taken over by the DM and is played by the DM until the alignment reverts to normal (if that occurs)."
So Josh, change that alignment back asap! I have enough to do without running your PC as well as the game! :-)

Alphonse staggers to his feet and asks after Lansel, cutting his bonds. That dagger is also good on flesh. He dispatches one of the dying barbarians.

Giada asks him not to kill the other two, and he obliges, not valuing the death of strangers over the goodwill of his friend-in-arms, perhaps.

Yel'kno checks for other (or recurring) enemies, but finds none. He gathers four falchions and a scattering of coins ... about 50 gp worth total. He finds a rope and a few metal nails.

Dilantar does not see the fleeing barbarian guard. He closes the door, but sees no bar. He could use boxes or crates to pile up in front of it.

Jozhur finds some of the crates are filled with roughly tanned furs. Badger, beaver, rabbit, mostly.

Spire is still recovering from his brush with death.

Rogar binds wounds and worries about how they seem to be getting knocked unconscious in fights.

Lansel gasps as soon as his gag is removed. "Thank you, my unknown friends!" he says. "Please, let us take this box on which I was seated and let us be gone before more arrive."

and last but not least, Welcome to the new Co-DM Tanner, may you please have mercy on us squishy types :P ))

You string up the dead body with a warning, per Yel'kno. You make sure the other two are really out cold. An initial try at opening the box Lansel wants you to take fails. Then discretion starts to take hold, and it is time to leave, as Spire wisely deduces.

Lansel recognizes his professional acquaintance, Alphonse, and is gratified to see him. He may also recognize Rogar. But honestly, he seems a little foggy. "I apologize, friends," he explains, "my memories have been playing me for the fool of late."

Jozhur grabs a couple pelts. He considers hiding to spy on your enemies. Jozhur, do you? Decide now, and post how.

Dilantar hustles the group, with the box, out before it is too late, with or without Jozhur. He leads the group ... where, exactly?

Rogar glares angrily at Yel'kno and Alphonse. Only the necessity to leave kept him from beating them both senseless. "A captain aboard a vessel is the law aboard that vessel. Nobody here has any authority to decide law and punishment. Those that stood against us in rescuing an innocent man is one thing. There will be no executing of the defenseless or I shall break both your arms. We will not disrespect the dead. That is completely unacceptable. If you disagree I strongly suggest you get lost on the way back. Because if it happens again there will be consequences."

Rogar takes the time to use a fallen barbarians weapon to cut the man down. He drags the body back over by the others. Only then will he depart the warehouse.

"These men are dead and do not care. If their death can serve as a warning to others and prevent further deaths, that is not wrong. Do not preach to me for not sharing your convictions about a corpse, Rogar. " Yel'kno says to dwarf, but makes no move to prevent the monk from removing his warning.

Instead, he'll use a blanket/fur if he can find one big enough to make a makeshift sack to carrying the weapons and assorted goods he's found and throw it over one shoulder on their way out. He walks by Lansel and keeps a look out for any more cutlist as well. (Perception 11)

"Your ham-fisted morality may serve you well in the monastery Rogar, but by letting the other two live you're putting the lives of everyone here at risk," Alphonse says as they leave, "what about tomorrow? do you think these men, so willing to spill our blood, are going to forget this slight? No, my friend. Chances are they'll find us and slit our throats while we sleep. And personally I'm rather attached to my blood, and have lost quite enough of it for one day."

Alphonse leans in close to Rogar as they walk. His breath smells coppery, like dried blood.

"So if you have a problem with that I suggest you get lost. I'll not have you endangering the lives of my friends again."

Rogar looks at Alphonse, giving him a fearless dwarven stare "Your actions have you no better than the men you wish to butcher like animals. People of honor would rescue the friend of a priest they had just met. Lawless murderers butcher helpless men like animals for a pointless show of bravado. You speak of a message. What more will dishonoring the dead accomplish? We have freed Lansel from them. That shows a superior strength. It would be foolish to assume they cannot get answers from the dead. Use these men to send a message. For the chance that this could be ended. Showing mercy and compassion shows that we wanted Lansel, not blood. Oh and what sort of souless monster would ever call you friend? You kill without a second thought. Who could ever trust you knowing that you would kill us just as easy if you thought it was in your best interest?"

ooc: as enjoyable as this argument is, it does make one thing really clear. Rogar cannot be in this group. He can't travel with remoresless killers and I don't think Giada can't either. I've been in groups with these types of characters and they never change.

ooc: Hey guys, Im really losing interest with this. First of all I watch for weeks as we debated on how we will rescue Lansel. Second, I watch as we argue in character with each other. Sometimes it only takes one weird personality to kill it for me. Unless we regroup and come to terms with the type of party we are running, (a good alignment) Im going to request a different PBEM group. [b]"Dilantar is right, we need to move. There will be time for conversation later," says Alphonse, turning away, "Crackerjack, scout ahead for us and make sure the way is clear."

ooc: whoa, I think I may have given everyone the wrong impression here.

First off, I'd just like to say that Alphonse is a fictional character, nothing more. I don't necessarily think the way he does. I thought this whole thing just added a bit of interesting party tension, I didn't have any idea it would be grounds for splitting the party.

Secondly: remorseless killer? These people tried twice(and almost succeeded) to kill us, once completely without provocation. A place like Bonetown, made up of pirates and refugees isn't the kind of place where you can afford mercy if someone wants you dead. As far as remorse goes, just because Alphonse isn't acting remorseful doesn't mean he necessarily has no qualms about killing an unarmed man. For all anyone knows his flippant attitude could just be a front to protect an already fragile psyche.

Regarding Rogar and Giada not traveling with us, I'd like to point out that they were the first two to break with the plan and rush into the building, charging a group of drunk, unprepared guards. On top of that, Alphonse and Yel'kno were acting in what they believed to be the best interest of the party. There is no reason why a paladin and a monk couldn't be a part of this group.

I'm not trying to spend a bunch of time philosophizing in-character, but I would like to play the character well. His actions were good, inasmuch as you can quantify a subjective moral quality like goodness. I like all of you guys, so don't take any of this the wrong way, I just think this got a bit out of hand.

"Alphonse, please have your bird make sure no one is watching us while he is out. If it's clear I'll hide out on the roof. I'll meet up with you at the temple, if someone can show me the location on a map. If I don't show up by morning assume I ran into some trouble."

If the roof of the warehouse is thin enough to hear through relatively easily and there are no taller buildings or terrain nearby, Jozhur will climb onto the roof through the trap door and close it behind himself (climb check=23). He will then wait quietly on the roof, roughly over square M7 (stealth check=24). If the rooftop is visible from nearby, he will travel to the temple with the rest of the group.

Series of perception checks above if needed (11,10,6,5,8).

ooc: In my opinion, nobody has done anything evil, at the worst some actions have fallen in the grey area between chaotic good and unaligned. Disagreement between characters can make for an interesting party, that's what has always made it fun for my group when we had a paladin among us. Having a paladin in a group of all chaotic good with one chaotic evil was really interesting. Play it up a bit and let it add flavor to the campaign, as long as there is some common goal for the group, it can still make sense for them to travel together.

OOC: Rogar is lawful good. There was nothing lawful or good about killing injured men and stringing up a body to show vigilante justice. It doesnt matter how others see their actions. It only matters how Rogar interprets them. I've delt with the conflict of good vs not so good and it's not something I want to get into again. its constant arguing and inter party conflict and I really dont want to deal with it.

OOC :: Alright, we should get moving along with the storyline. Melinda, I'm very sorry to hear that you're leaving, and I wish you the best. I'm sorry that the game didn't move quickly enough for you, but that's just how things work sometimes. Hopefully I'll see you around the site.

Walter, do you want to stay, or leave? We've really hit the inherint flaw with Lawful Good here; they really only get along with characters within one alignment step of them (NG, LN). Unfortunately, as many of the group is Chaotic Good, we're going to encounter this problem a lot. Personally, I see a few solutions. The first one is what you've already presented. If you feel it would be in your and your character's best interest to leave, then I'll say the same to you that I said to Melinda. However, if you would like to stay, either the Chaotic members of the party must be less Chaotic, or you must be less Lawful. Honestly, I think it would be interesting if we compromised and did both. The Chaotic characters could be a little less remorseless, and the Lawful characters could bend a little more.

I'm reminded of the time Spire took Engev's scrolls from his apartment. There was a squabble between my character and a few others, but it was solved rather quickly and efficiently. There is going to be inner party conflict no matter what, unless we're all the same alignment. I think it makes for a more interesting game. However, if you disagree, you are free to leave, or perhaps roll another character. Either way, I believe a decision should be made quickly, as I, and I imagine most of you, would like to continue with the storyline.

Before today's DM Post, I'd like to make an Out-Of-Character Comment Designed To Preserve Party Amity and Comity

It is natural for a new level group of adventurers to need to hash out basics, like party loot sharing and how to work as a team and what to do with prisoners. I appreciate the thought that has gone into the roleplay on this issue. And I especially appreciate the efforts made to keep the group together and accommodate different playing styles.

DMs in the Wold do have a fair amount of leeway to determine their own style of play. Therefore, in the hope of resolving this situation, let me offer some guidance as to how I adjudicate some of these sticky situations.

1) It is not evil to kill an enemy in combat. It is also not evil to leave an enemy for dead.

2) It is not evil to kill some absolutely evil creatures who are beyond redemption, such as undead and demons.

3) It is usually evil and always suspect to kill enemies who are helpless or unconscious or who have asked for quarter.

4) If you defeat an enemy but do not kill them, it is expected and fair to take their goods. This serves as a fair punishment and is just. It also decreases the enemy's capacity for future evil and enhances your ability to do future good.

5) If you defeat an enemy but do not kill them, they will often see the error of their ways or have a change of heart. Even if they do not have a change of heart, they will wisely see that if they could not defeat the heroes with all their gear, they will never be able to do so without. Therefore, defeated enemies cease to present a moral dilemma for layers under my DMship. They either reform themselves or are cowed into better behavior.

5a) There may be very rare exceptions for recurring enemies and archvillains who may seek revenge even if they plead for mercy. Such cases are atrociously evil and present a very rare situation for epic storytelling.

6) Per the Woldian House Rules for Campaign Traits, Woldian heroes are encouraged to be Brave, Charitable, Clean, Good, Heroic, Noble, and Trustworthy. With these qualities in mind, as DM, I will not penalize a character who is merciful.

I hope the guidelines above will serve to illustrate the kinds of stories I like to tell when I DM, and I hope that this defangs arguments that killing captives is required or necessary. It is not.

To speak to the concern that the game has been too slow ... well, that's the DM's fault. I have perhaps let the game lag, and I hope to be responsive to feedback. I hope no one will quit over either ethical or gameplay concerns. Please feel free to e-mail me with comments, and I will do my best to make the game more fun.

ALSO I strongly discourage OOC talk of leaving the group. Specifically inviting others to leave is not cool. Keep in mind that you should have the goal of making your characters into a group of friends. Sure, play your characters. Even get into arguments. But no one is to suggest that another player or character should leave.

The group leaves the dead and dying behind, taking with them a box, as indicated by Lansel, and a bag of weapons, coins, and furs.

Rogar, showing mercy towards the defeated enemy, ensures that the dead are not desecrated.

Yel'kno gathers loot.

Alphonse considers the chance that the defeated enemy will come back to try a new attack on the group, but on reflection he doubts that even these barbarians would be so heedless of their own self-interest as to come back for more after two defeats, or so evil that some twisted desire for revenge would push them into an insane attack.

Jozhur creeps to the roof to watch what will happen after the group departs.

Dilantar and Giada lead the group back to Brother Engev's chapel.

Spire keeps alert on the way back.

Jozhur in hiding, notes that several people enter the warehouse. There is shouting. One runs off. Later, a few more arrive. One masked man, he notes, is dressed more finely, and it gets quiet when he enters. The sun sets, and Jozhur decides it is time to go. He follows his instructions and finds his way to the chapel.

At the chapel, the Brothers Lansel and Engev are clearly glad to see each other, although the only sign the reserved priests give is a smile and a handshake. Lansel sits down, and offers some cures. He says, "You must have some questions." Engev answers, "We should not impose on your privacy." Lansel replies, "No, enough harm has been done through reticence already."

"For starters, how about explaining your tale?," asks Alphonse, "How did you end up in that warehouse, and who were those thugs?"

When he has a moment, Alphonse will pull Rogar aside.

"Rogar, I'd like to apologize for my actions earlier. My blood was still boiling from the heat of combat, and truth be told, I've never killed anyone before today. I did what I thought was necessary, but upon reflection I've realized that this is not the way of an honorable man. I hope that you will forgive my actions and stay with us. Though I may not share all your views, you have been a good friend thusfar, and I'd be sorry to see you break company on my account."

ooc: Sorry everybody, I wasn't aware that The Wold was based more on epic/heroic values than realistic ones. I'll keep this in mind in the future, and I apologize for causing a ruckus. Walter, if you want to leave, that's cool, but if it's because of anything I've done I'd like to make amends, and I'd love for you to stay. Melinda, I'm sorry to see you go too, but if you must, then I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors.

OOC: You can buy and sell anything here in Bonetown, of course, usually no questions asked. Your exchange rate may or may not be very good, depending on local economic variables and your skill at haggling. There is (I believe) an entrance to the Catacombs Magic Shop in the nearby settlement of Rum, and a trip there every once in a while is entirely reasonable.
