The Temple of Wardd

Koz'Um Dawl lets the scroll matter drop and goes along wth the group.

Yel'kno wisely suggests looking for this Captain Nakresh at the Temple of Wardd, first. He wonders where the Temple is, but seeing as Bonetown is really hardly more than a hamlet, founded not too long ago, it should not be hard to find.

Spire agrees with Yel'kno, but he wonders about what a temple will be like, here in Bonetown.

Baird is on board too.

Rogar things that there will be some work sorting truth from lies, but he seems willing to give it a try.

Karas and Dilantar go along too.

As it turns out, the Temple of Wardd is in the middle of town, and it stands out because it is one of the bigger buildings around. Also one of the more polished and pretty.

The temple itself is wood and stone, three stories high (although the third story is much smaller than the other two). There are no windows on the ground floor, and the ones on the second floor are narrow and evenly spaced.

If you can make a Knowledge (engineering) check vs DC12, then Highlight to display spoiler: {You can tell that if the doors were closed and barred, the temple would make a solid mini-fortress.}

The temple doors are thrown wide open, and they are carved on the inside with images of moons, waves, stars, dice, cards, and spirals.

If you can make a Knowledge (religion) check vs DC12, then Highlight to display spoiler: {You recall that Wardd is god of moons, tides, rogues, adventurers, madness and insanity, luck, gambling, and the night.}

The door is flanked by four guards in full plate armor. The fierceness of the guards and the quality of the armor -- by far the best you have seen anyone wearing in town -- speaks volumes to the power of this church here in this town.

Sitting in the doorway on a stool is a young man dressed in rags. He is clean except for the smears around his mouth -- it looks rather as if he has been eating dirt. He holds a small deep bowl. He and the guards ignore each other. As you stand looking at the temple, the teenager calls out to you, "A gold doubloon to tell your fortune! A bit of luck to help you inside! Wardd's blessing!"

Baird seems to become more child-like the closer the group draws to their destination. Upon finally seeing the temple Baird suddenly becomes very somber and seems to withdraw into himself as he approaches the doors failing to notice the details of the doors or even the guards. Somewhat startled by the voice of the beggar Baird subtly reaches into his money pouch and grabs the first coin his hand touches, noticing that it is in fact a gold piece he trusts his luck and tosses the coin to the beggar. "I think we could use all the good luck we can get today."

((Sorry about the rolls, I'm still figuring out the dice roller. First roll was a mistake, next two are Knowledge rolls, Engineering and Religion respectively. I suck at skill checks.))

Spire approaches the church, stopping short of where his companions do to eye the building. He attempts to remember things about architecture regarding Warrd's temples, or even just about Warrd, but the information escapes him. Frustrated, his attention turns to the young man begging for gold. For the first time, the party sees Spire's features soften, his hard gaze turning to a mix of pity and sadness. He reaches into his bag and pulls out two gold coins, handing them to the young man. "I have no need for a fortune, young man. Get yourself some real food and clothing."

Yel'kno nods and heads off to the temple with the rest of the group. He slows his pace with the others as they near the structure, taking in its surroundings as the approach.

He lets the others in the group tend to the beggar teen while he watches the guards and anyone else near by.

Rogar also reaches into his purse and draws forth a gold piece for the begger. He doesnt have the resources to help out as many as he would like but every now and then he can spare a coin. It wouldnt last in bowntown, but maybe he could get a decent meal and a place to sleep.

Four of our heroes -- Baird, Spire, Koz'Um Dawl, Rogar -- spare a coin or two for the beggar.

As you approach him, it is clear that his sanity is questionable. His eyes do not focus together. He has a slight palsy. His voice is loud and clear, however, and as you drop coins in his bowl, he grins and recites:

Yours sought to unfold the Wold!


The dirt-faced beggar bows and motions you into the Temple.

Yel'kno, keeping alert in every other direction, notes that the Bonetown residents around here gather to talk or make exchanges of packages or to meet before going elsewhere. It seems to him that the watchful presence of the well-armored guards creates a kind of safe zone hereabouts, where no one dares to resort to violence, and therefore that makes this a sort of neutral spot to conduct business without fear of ambush.

Spire's eyes widen at the eerily prophetic ramblings as a chill runs down his spine. "Unfold... the Wold?" he mutter to himself, his face once again taking on the harsh expression you have all grown accustomed to. He eyes the boy, taking a few steps back to place himself near Dilantar, but a few steps back from the temple. It's probably best I not take the lead here... all things considered, he thinks as he glances over at Koz'Um, and then Baird. Best to leave this to the divine folk of our company.

Rogar heads into the temple silently hoping his companions are on their best behavior. Getting into a fight here would be just shy of crazy. The guards arent city watch. If the gods are smiling then they will get in and out with the informaiton they need.

Dilantar asks a guard about Rev. Moller.

Spire reacts with quiet alarm at the mad doggerel of the begger boy. He chooses to let others lead here.

Baird is also content to let Dilantar talk to the guard.

Yel'kno takes note of the relative safety of the square outside the temple and then joins the others in waiting to hear what the guard will say.

Koz'Um Dawl, Karas, and Rogar all are content to see where thngs go.

The guard nods and says, "Follow me." He leads the party into the temple. Immediately within is a largish room filled with eight gaming tables. At two tables, players are throwing dice. At another two, card games are going on. Others have strange mechanical devices that whirl and rotate, and evidently players bet on how the machines will move.

You note that the people running the games are dressed in ceremonial robes and vestments. Each outfit, although clearly religious, looks different. Some are new, others shabby. Different colors, cuts, and styles abound. With every play, the robed folk running the games require the players to drop a coin into an alms box.

The guard leads you through a door and into a small room. It is hung with tapestries all round. There are no chairs. He asks you to wait.

After about ten minutes, a priest enters. He asks for your names, ships, and business.

Spire's jaw drops as they enter the temple, his eyes wide as he gazes around at the various games. Is this entire building dedicated to gambling? I'm not sure whether to be shocked... or impressed. Spire follows the guard silently, staying towards the back of the group as he attempts to soak everything in. Not much of a religious man, Spire has spent very little time in temples and churches, and none of that time has been in a temple of Warrd. As the guard leads them into the room, he begins to grow bored, and walks over to Dilantar. "What do you think of this place?" he asks, gesturing back towards the room they came through. "It seems... interesting." When the priest enters, Spire whips around, a bit surprised that someone had finally come to speak with them. He remains silent, again wanting someone else to take the lead.

Baird followed the guard and quickly lost his solemn reserve, the more gambling tables they passed the more giddy he became. Even after being left in a room alone Baird continued to smile like a child at pastry shop. When the priest asked for their information Baird quickly stepped forward. "My name is Baird Windcatcher a servant of Warrd not too unlike yourself, I serve on no ship, but we have come to ask for you assistance in aiding another here in Bonetown. We have been asked to locate a cleric of The Pantheon by the name of Lansel. There has been some cause for concern about his well-being."

Yel'kno moves through the temple examining the various forms of gambling being offered. He was familiar enough with dice and some card games from life on board ship, but some of the more exotic gambling machines were quite foreign and exciting. His hand moves to patch his coin purse as they wait for the priest, wondering if he'll have the opportunity to test his luck.

When the priest finally arrives, Yel'kno turns to face the man with his customary smile, but waits for one of the more pious members of the group to take the lead.

This was not what Rogar expected. A holy shrine transformed into a place of gambling, loss, and occassionally profit. He really shouldnt have been considering what Bonetown was. A true church wouldnt interest many people in Bonetown.

Looking everywhere on the way to the waiting room, amazed, Dilantar glances at Spire as he makes his comment, "It certainly is impressive, not entirely sure how to react to all of this." As the priest comes in, Dilantar responds, "Good day, I am Dilantar Krenwae'afein, an alchemist who recently arrived in Bonetown. Our group is currently searching for a missing person, at the behest of Brother Engev. May we speak to Reverend Moller. We understand he may have a clue to the missing person's whereabuts."

Koz'Um Dawl is rather unimpressed by the gadgetry and games of chance. He is far more interested talking to this Reverend Moller than scoping out the frivolousness contraptions. He informs the priest of his name and the ship he arrived on and also pressed the man, like Rogar for an audience with Moller.

The group asks to speak with Reverend Moller, explaining their interest in finding Lansel.

The priest takes out a coin, and says, "Shall we let Wardd decide if Brother Moller is available?" He flips the coin -- which turns up tails. The priest nods, and says, "I am Brother Moller. You seek information about Lansel. Of course, if a stranger came to me to ask of you, should I just blurt out what I know?"

He looks around thoughtfully. "Please convince me that I should tell you what I know. Perhaps you would be willing to dice for the information? If so, I hope that you have stakes to bring to the game."

Spire's eyebrow slowly raises as he watches the coin flip up in the air. Listening to Moller speak. he feels anger rising in his chest. This man is supposed to be a priest? I've seen pickpockets with more morality. Having remained silent for too long, Spire finally speaks up and says, "Are we honestly supposed to play a game of chance to discover information regarding a missing man? Are you not the least bit concerned for his well being?"

Spire speaks with some ire, and the priest replies enigmatically.

Koz'Um Dawl seems ill at ease with the prospect of gambling for a man's life. Or at least, for more information.

Yel'kno offers service for service. The priest nods. "That may suffice," he says, "but you still have given me scant reason to reveal personal confidences.

Rogar mentions cheating, and says that a wager is a fool's bet in this temple. Moller laughs. "You can stack the deck by cheating, and you can stack the deck by being lucky! Wardd favors the latter! You are also stacking the deck with your words, which cause me to wonder. You say Lansel has gone missing? And you are trying to help? See, you already stack the deck in your favor with this revelation."

Dilantar, at a loss, looks to matters arcane. Moller looks at that, and smiles. "Unwilling to be bothered, hey?" he asks gently.

"Look, says the priest of Wardd, "I have some fondness for Lansel, and I do not want to do him harm by telling him things he revealed to me in confidence. Yes, he came to me for help. I offered what I could, but he was not satisfied. Where did he go when I told him I could not help in the ways he wanted? I do not know."

After waiting for the rest of his allies to speak to Reverend Moller, Baird decides to try his hand at diplomacy. "Reverend, I cannot say that I fully understand your phrase as I am somewhat unlearned in my service to Wardd but I trust that luck will give us a way to show ourselves to have Lansel's best interests in mind."

"Trouble! Trouble! It comes to all of us in its time, if our luck runs out!" Moller muses. "But I'm inclined to gamble on you fellows." He flips his coin again -- heads this time.

"Well, I will say that many confused and crazed folk come to Wardd. He is the god of the moons, you know. Your friend Lansel was confused. He hoped we could cure him. But we do not cure the mad. We just help them as best we can. We tried to help him, but he went off in search of a cure. He was missing chunks of his memory. He wanted to remember what he had lost."

Moller says to Yel'kno, "Yes, Nakresh. Yes, he mentioned that name. Someone he thought he remembered from his past. I advised him to let go, but he would not. He left us determined to find this name that had floated up from the recesses of his broken mind. He was headed for the harbor, which makes sense when seeking a captain."

Looking up from his formulas to give a quick nod to Spire, Dilantar also answers the comment made by Moller, "It isn't that I can't be bothered per se, it is that the probability of winning in a game of chance against a priest of chance is very small, hence I will leave it to those more capable than I in that area."

Dilantar mentions his hesitation to roll against a priest of luck in his own temple. Moller chuckles. "Very wise, if you were indeed playing against me. But that is not what you are here to do. You are here to convince fate, not me. I simply look at the throw of the dice and tell you how it turns out."

"Have you any other questions before you go? Maybe you are interested in having your fortune told? A divination cast?"

Moller waits, and a few of his visitors call for a divination. Others are quiet. He pauses.

Then he waits a bit more.

Then he says, "Excellent! I would be glad to seek divine guidance regarding your friend Lansel. Now, normally, I would require a donation, but I feel bad for you." Sense Motive DC22: Highlight to display spoiler: {He does not feel sorry for you.} "So simply donate what you feel is right after the spell is cast."

He casts a spell, rolling a handful of dice as he does so. Spellcraft DC 17 Highlight to display spoiler: {It is Augury.}

After a pause, he says, "Hear the words of Wardd: The friend you seek has ceased his toil. And moved beyond this mortal coil. I'm sorry, the spell suggests Woe."

"If there are no other questions?" he stands to leave.

Curious at which spell Moller is using, Dilantar is distracted at a critical moment by a chemical phial coming lose in his belt, and is unable to identify the spell being cast. After addressing his issue, Dilantar listens to the divination and is saddened to hear that Lansel has passed on. He then says, "Thank you for your assistance in this matter. Also, would you happen to know anything else that might be of help to us?"

Still in awe of actually being in the temple of Wardd, Baird's attempt to identify the spell being cast is interrupted by a stray thought and a question that enters his mind. After Moller stands to leave Baird draws closer and asks the man for a favor, "This is embarrassing, I am a recent convert from Ffloy and I am afraid I don't have much knowledge about Wardd, do you have an extra holy book?"

Yel'kno's lips turn into a sad frown as the priests divination shows that Lansel is no longer alive. He lets out a sigh and thanks the priest for his time as well.

"Brother Engrev will be saddened by this news... but we should see if we can find the manner of Lansel's death and maybe recover his body so that Engrev can perform whatever rites he may have wanted. It would seem the docks would be our next stop. Perhaps the Harbor Master will be able to give us some direction on this Captain Nakresh."

"Books are uncommon in Bonetown, and good advice is rarer still. Having received a goodly portion of the latter, perhaps it is time for us to part."

Koz'Um Dawl and Yel'kno offer polite thanks. Rogar goes so far as to offer a single gold piece. Moller's pursed lips turn into an actual frown. "Your generosity will reap its own reward," he says as he sees you to the door.

The priest may be angry but a happy priest because of a better donation doesnt buy food to eat. Yeah Rogar wishes he could have given more but they may have to pay for passage on a ship and he doesnt have any coin going into his purse.

"I think its a good idea. We can at least inquire about Lansel and a ship before returning to brother Engev."
