The Return

DM Mark - What Goes Up Must Come Down  d100=99 ; d20=7 ; d20=3 ;
Monday August 28th, 2017 1:36:53 AM

As the party burst forth into the sky above the Cinnamon Valley, they start to fall.

Emrys’ quick thinking results in him casting Feather Fall on his comrades, except for Barratore how has a Fly potion.

Evaris can see that Barratore is not affected by Feather Fall, and he casts Wind Walk. Evaris and Barratore instantly become composed of cloudlike vapor, and the descend with the others.

Barratore does not wait to see if spells will save him, and drinks the potion just to be safe.

Brom floats downward with the others, very much looking forward to be on solid ground.

Lanliss can scarcely believe they are all still alive. Fearing it may not actually be true, he closes his eyes until he is on solid ground again.

Velarin chooses not to be affected by the Feather Fall. He reminds everyone that appearances matter, and suggests some healing is in order. Then he puts on a show for those below. Emrys agrees.

Baslim tenses up for a moment, but is relieved to find he will not fall to his death. He wants to speak to the Mayor at the first opportunity.

The specks that are the people below come into sharper view as the heroes descend. Down they go at slightly different paces and by different means. As they go, there are a number of thuds and thumps as objects strike the ground. Glitter from the volcano seems to disperse, but heavier things like the heroes, gems and lumps of metal fall in relative proximity to each other. In a few cases there are odd large lumps of - something - that lands and half sinks into the earth from the impact. These look like large grey stone blobs, but they seem to be giving off grey whisps as they evaporate in the sun.

Crowds of people, are headed your way. You hear cries of welcome and jubilation.

"You're very welcome, dear Edson."

"Hmmm, how very odd ... very odd indeed!," he says in an odd tone.

"I recognize the feather fall spell that I cast just short moments ago (Knowledge [Arcana]: 34), but I no longer remember how to cast it. I consign NOTHING to oblivion ... unless I choose to," he says in a very annoyed and chilling timbre."

He takes a deep breath and sighs when he see's all their adoring fans rushing to them. Emrys says in a low voice so only they can hear, "I do hope they keep the touching to a minimum. Let's be sure to put on a good face ... shall we?" Their adoration can be quite intolerable at times," he thinks.

Perception 8
Just as he thought, they were odd large lumps of - something.

The fighter looks over at Brom and then back to Evaris, "Better make with the healing then, Brom still has not learned how to duck"

Seeing the approaching crowds, Barratore looks to Emrys and Evaris. Remembering what V told him some time ago, he tries to not look like a big thug. Well or words to that affect.

Brom lands with a soft thud and stows his sword. "I'm fine, save yer healin'". He says. He starts heading back to town taking a wide berth in a attempt to avoid the onrush of villagers.

Looking pretty bloodied up, it is very easy for Brom to excuse himself from any villagers that happen to cut him. He heads back to their rooms getting some ale from the bar before heading up.

DM Mark - Barratore instructs Brom about leaning to duck  d100=66 ;
Tuesday August 29th, 2017 1:08:31 AM

Edson lands safely, grateful for the spell that let him do so. With the treasures embedded in the ground as they landed and the incoming populace, he says, "We get dibs right?"

Evaris and Barratore land quickly enough, but it takes 5 rounds before they can change from their cloud-like form back into their usual selves. Once the wounded are grouped together, Evaris will heal them for 12 points. Barratore comments that Brom needs to learn to duck.

Velarin lands and suggests another spokesperson besides himself.

Emrys says he feels different. He encourage everyone to be ready for the crowds.

Brom says he’s fine, though from his injuries he is clearly not fine. He wants to head back to town, but doing so will involve walking a ways. (Which town does Brom wish to go to - where are the rooms you referred to?)

As you look around, you so see bits of slag and some gems in the ground, along with grey lumps of stone. Oddly, the grey lumps of stone seem to be giving off a dark grey vapor and are gone within minutes leaving only a large while where they landed. The metal and gems are still there. Glitter seems to be floating down everywhere, sparkling in the sun.

There is a small crowd headed your way, farmers and herdsmen mostly, calling out to you. A few of them will arrive in minutes, the rest will take a bit longer. Some runners are headed away from you, likely conveying the news to others.

The first few people arrive, and have questions. Who are you, what happened, how did you get here, what did you see? The ones that come after seem to have the same questions. A few seem to know generally who you are, but none you recognize. Word spreads that you are teh heroes that saved the valley. Some begin to pick at the precious metal and gems embedded in the ground.

His charm and grace doesn't doesn't inspire comfort or well-being. His pleasantness appears like a forced facade. Possibly he is still very much disquieted by the oddness of the situation ... something more strange than being forcefully ejected from a volcano.

"All is well, my friends. We are the Keepers of the Vale. Emrys Myrrdanmyl at your service. Do not be alarmed ... all is very well."

This is the best the "master orator" can say at the moment. Emrys wonders why Valerin had called him that!

DM Mark - Where's Brom going?  d8=5 ;
Wednesday August 30th, 2017 1:21:31 AM

Edson is a bit surprised that these folk are not know how famous he and the rest are. He tells them you are the Heroes of Cinnamon Valley. Then he asks if anyone knows about these gems and slags of precious metals that fell from the sky with them.

One old timer there regards Edson with a squint and a scowl, “Heroes o’ Cinnamon Valley, eh? Humph! Well yer not my hero - I dinna vote for ya.” A nearby woman chides the old man, “Oh Ortas, show some respect. We heard there was folk doin strange stuff. These folk fell out of the sky - that’s sumpthin.”

Ortas responds, “Well, we seen a dragon flying across the sky. That don’t make the dragon a hero.”

Brom can see the slopes of Glitterox, but he’s not sure exactly where he is, and asks. Then he retrieves some of the treasures around him.

“Where are ya? Why yer here, in Cinnamon Valley! Frog Hollow is that way, an Magpie Crossing is a good deal further on. Exactly where are yall from?”

Lanliss is just glad to be alive!

Baslim shouts praise you are alright. He suggests Evaris heal the injured, and begins to direct folks to begin gathering the valuables around you all.

Evaris alludes to changes he has undergone (though his DMs have not seen any such changes yet.) He says, "All is well, my friends. We are the Keepers of the Vale. Emrys Myrrdanmyl at your service. Do not be alarmed ... all is very well."

Emrys refrains from mocking Evaris’ theatrics. Barely.

Velarin suggests to Barratore that something about Evaris is off, and suggest keeping an eye on the Bard.

Brom says to Evaris that he neither needs nor wants his spell, preferring instead rest and drink. He begins to head off without the others. Unfortunately, he has no idea where he’s headed just now. This generates some puzzled looks at he heads off in a random direction. (I assume this means Brom moves away from the party and the crowds?)

Barratore is concerned that both Bron and Evaris are behaving oddly, and keeps an eye on them. He pick up some of the treasures, and waits for others to tell him where he is.

Within a few minutes, more people arrive, a couple on horse.

“Greetings! You must be the heroes I heard tell of. I am Tavid you see, and I serve as the executive-officer-for-the-week in Frog Hollow. We’re trying out a new system of governance, an autonomous collective. You see, all decisions 'ave to be ratified at a special bi-weekly meeting By a simple majority, in the case of purely internal affairs, but by a two-thirds majority, in the case of more major…”

“Oh shut up about that Tavid,” says another, “there you go again. What these folks really need is help pickin’ up their belongings. Here not, let’s help collect these valuable for these good folks what fell from the sky. Clearly, they’s people of importance! Come on now!”

Tavid shuts up, clearly incensed. The the others begin collecting gems and lumps of prescuous metals. Those strange lumps of grey stone have now all evaporated.

All told, there are about 300,000 gp in gems and metals that are collected and set at the party’s feet. Night is coming on, and folks start to head down the mountain, inviting you to join them. How do you collect the treasure and do you follow? And do you call out to Brom who’s headed down, but in a completely different direction?

There is some discussion about what to do, particularly how to redirect Brom to the ale so you can all relax. And everyone needs some rest. Velarin casts detect magic on the collected treasure, but none of it detects as magic. But it is sparkly in the late afternoon light.

As the sun sets, the group is headed down the slopes of Glitterox to a village in the distance. No doubt the spellcasters among your party can provide illumination to suplement the lanterns and torches the villagers bring out.

It is dark by the time you reach Frog Hollow. The place is little more than a collection of hovels, farm houses and stables. But the place is now brightly lit as you arrive, and there is a good deal of activity. You’re brought into a large barn that has been turned into a tavern of sorts, and there is a party in your honor.

There is much interest in the heroes. Children gather around the heroes until they are shooed away. Men and women admire your weapons and gear, asking about your abilites, prowess, and how you came to be flying out of a volcano. Some of the women seem especially friendly. Food and ale is brought in plenty.

Emrys' irritation, mostly hidden by force of will, is greatly softened after watching the people gather up the precious stones left scattered across the ground ... and not making any attempts to keep a few for themselves. 'Just one of these gems could easily feed their families for a year,' he thinks. 'These people are truly worthy of my protection,' he continues to think.

Emrys entertains folks with minor spells, and spreads a few coins around to the locals.

Brom, still pretty beat up and in no mood to be social, asks for a room right away. Given a room in someone’s house he then asks for food and beer in that room. Alone. Then he tries to wake before the others and head out to Magpie Crossing. Alone.

Edson keeps an eye on things, and enjoys the festivities. Lanliss does likewise.

Baslim takes Lord Hmitr aside at some point, asking about a place to contribute a large amount of funds. He responds, “Hmmm. Very, very generous of you. I will give this some though. How large an amount?”

Barratore keeps an eye on the sullen Brom on the way to Frog Hollow. The minotaur is very popular and also very intimidating. Few are willing to try to lift is sword, and fewer still can, but the attempts are a hit and result in much laughter.

Evaris flirtations are responded to, and in a G-rated game he will find companionship if he so desires.

Tavid occasionally tries to engage Lord Hmitri in political debate, but has little success. Lord Hmitri is far more interested in the tale from the party about what happened. As Tavid presses the point beyond politeness, one of Lord Hmitri’s guards grabs him and pulls him away. Tavid says, “Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system!” None of the other villagers here seem to pay him much mind.

You are provided beds in various houses, though the best they can to for Barratore is clean blankets on clean hay in the barn.

The following day, you begin the long trek to Magpie Crossing. You are seen off by the good folks of Frog Hollow. They do not have any riding horses for you, but you could hire some wagons. Lord Hmitri wishes to go with you however you go. His bodyguards seem indifferent about this, but the apparent mage is not pleased. He suggests the Lord return by magical means - which Hmitri rejects wishing to accompany you back.

Brom is nowhere to be seen, and you are told that he left early. If you hire a wagon, you will catch up with Brom.

However you go, you are greeted as heroes along the way, and eventually by a crowd as you approach the Magpie Crossing. Knowledge Local DC 10:Highlight to display spoiler: {You know that you cannot really upset the economy in Magpie Crossing with your gold, as it can better absorb such things than the village of Frog Hollow.}

Celebrations are being planned in your honor.

Barratore looks over towards Tavid as he cries out and answers, "Are you in need of help? Are you being repressed?" To himself he can't help but notice the violence inherent in the system, but for now it is what it is.

Barratore knows he'll be sleeping on the ground for all intents and purposes and later as things wind down, he'll sock away a keg to help him get comfortable.

Barratore has no plan to ride in a wagon. It does not fit his idea of a heroic way to travel. Never heard any tales about Valdor's mighty wagon, or Mondor's fabulous cart and that was good enough for him. Barratore will take up a spot in the middle of the group so as to not accidently out pace them and to prevent himself from having to turn about constantly.

On the walk, Barratore tries to keep an ear out on what is on lord Hmitri's mind. He must want to discuss something or he wouldn't be here. If the lord has not been engaged as they approach Magpie, about 30 minutes away, Barratore will simply ask what he's about in walking with the group.

(New Bloodwitch Spell Prep rules: Concentration check:40 (d20 + caster level + ability modifier), to draw Woldsblood for daily spells without injury vs. DC 17 (10+highest level spell). Success, that was very easy to beat!!)

During the morning twilight, Emrys draws Woldsblood to renew his spells. He takes out his tiny, masterwork travel cauldron. After a short chant, the runes engraved into the cauldron begin two glow. The sounds of a deep toll of a bell resonates from the bowl.

"Angus, are you there?"
"Yess," a low, gravelly voice answers.
"Good morning, Angus. Are you well rested?"
"Ehh!"
"Excellent. Let's begin the ritual then."

The ritual starts with a few words of power and moments of quiet concentration. Garbled muttering can be heard through the tiny cauldron, unintelligible to most. The one known as Angus has the voice of a grindstone. After an hour, the sun has broken through the distant hills and begun to shed its light upon the Wold.

(Ritual of Warding. Survival Check: 25, (vs. DC 20) success! +1 AC and Saves for 24 hours.)

"Just the one for now .. not without the others."
"Yess." Then a resounding click sound and the cauldron goes lifeless and dark.

"NO! I was NOT done with you! Sigh ... we shall have a little talk later then! I've told him countless times not to do that! Ughh!"

The walk home is fine for Emrys. It gives him time to contemplate all the oddness that he is feeling. He wonders if anyone else is feeling the same. He recalls fleeting phantoms of other friends ... like distant memories much older than himself. Something has happened ... he just can't put his finger on it. Maybe Angus is experiencing it too. On second thought ... probably not!

Evaris does find companionship that evening, and joins his fellow Keepers in the morning, re-invigorated if not especially well rested. He has a Heroes' Feast ready for any who want to partake.

He is content to walk to Magpie Crossing. "Perhaps Brom just wanted some time to think things over," Evaris says. "It wouldn't do to intrude on him before he's ready to talk to us."

As Brom walks the road back to Magpie Crossing, something gnaws at him as he goes over the fight in his head. While he couldn't see the whole fight his senses were keen enough, and from descriptions from others, to piece most of it together. And what he comes up with doesn't make sense. The Shadow Lord should have won. Lanliss had plenty of time to deliver the crystal heart to the Shadow Lord but the demon took his time, much more time than Brom would have were he in that position. No one knew where the rogue was for twenty to thirty seconds. Lanliss was only fifty feet away at best? It didn't make sense. It must have been on purpose, but for what. Escape into the Wold from the shadow realm? These were answers over his head, but nevertheless he was concerned.

All these things go through Brom's head as he walks back to Magpie Crossing. Over and over he goes over the fight and others accounts of their part. Yes things didn't make sense. He would need to be watchful.

Once back Magpie Crossing, Brom stows his gear and heads for the springs. He arrival ahead of the others should afford him some anonymity as to not make a big to do.

It’s a fine, cold morning as you are just a few days from the winter solstice. The air is brisk, but not freezing.

Brom leaves early in the morning. As he goes, Brom contemplates the events the day before, but does not discuss this with the others. On learning that Brom has already left, Barratore hurries after him, following silently at a distance, leaving the barbarian to his thoughts.

Velarin offers magical transportation to Magpie Crossing. He’s puzzled by Broms quiet mood the night before.

Emrys pulls out his cauldron and contacts Angus just before dawn. A bleary Angus answers the call. After an hour, Emrys finishes his ritual. Angus decides this ends this ends their conversation for the day, and abruptly hangs up, much to the frustration of the good Emrys. He looks forward to the 10 mile walk back to Magpie Crossing.

Evaris hits it off with one of the buxom locals, and seems to disappear for the evening. In the morning he is back. The cleric fine with the walk back to their town, and he advises those worried about the barbarian to leave him to his thoughts.

Edson is a bit put off by all the attention shown to the heroes. By contrast, Baslim acknowledges that the party’s reputation preceeds them. His main concern is that this adulation not go their heads.

Lanliss asks the others, “What now?” He expresses his concern that trouble seems to find them, and that they are too often called upon to solve problems they did not create. He asks Valerin if he knows of something that would prevent mind control.

One of the villagers is quick to offer Lanliss a solution - he produces a tin hat! “Ah made this meself. There was thoughts bein’ put into me head, an’ now they stopped. Would ‘ja like me ta make ya one? They work real good!” He seems oblivious to the eye-rolling and guffaws of the other villagers.

Evaris casts a Heroes’ Feast in the barn area where the party was the night before. A magnificent table appears, laden with a great feast! With service for 14, the table is heavy with food and drink. Emrys is impressed, as are many others. They learn that Brom has already left earlier that morning, followed by Barratore.

With service for 14, the remaining party members take 6 spaces, Lord Hmitri and his retinue take up 4 more. That leaves 4 more places at the extravagant table.

Tavid, the Frog Hollow Executive-officer-for-the-week quickly steps in to solve this dilemma! He begins a lecture about how to best select whom from them village should partake. He lays out a complicated method to determine this based on productivity, service to the collective good, and time spent in leadership positions. Then a debate begins about what is considered service and leadersip. By the time he’s done, he finds all the chairs have been filled by others and he leaves in a huff.

One young woman seems rather familliar with Evaris as preparations are made to leave. Does the Evaris call out to her to come with them to Magpie Crossing? You also find that there are several youths that want to join your group and ask to go as well. What do you tell them?

You all decide to go on foot, and the walk soon has all of you warmed up on this fine day. One of Lord Hmitri’s followers dressed in robes clearly did not want to walk, and disappeared with a Teleport spell.

You reach Magpie Crossing that afternoon.
-------------------------------------
As Brom, followed at a distance by Barratore, approaches Magpie Crossing they are met by cheering groups of people. Try though they might, they are unable to avoid them all. They seem to have heard that you flew out of Glitterox with the glitter. They want to know what happened? Where is Lord Hmitri? Why did the volcano erupt early this year? Did you see the dragon? Strange lumps rained down around the land but are gone. Many want to buy you a drink.

-------------------------------------
As the rest of you arrive with Lord Hmitri, you are met by cheering groups of people. Lord Hmitri is quick to step into this fame, making it clear to the cheering crowds that he is with your group. He sends messengers ahead.

The crowds seem to have heard that you flew out of Glitterox with the glitter. They want to know what happened? Why did the volcano erupt early this year? Did you see the dragon? Strange lumps rained down around the land but are gone. Many want to buy you a drink. They tell you the barbarian and the minotaur precede you here.

Once Lanliss asks Velarin about protection from possession, he responds "To be honest, I do not think that there is that i have heard of. the basic protection spells like protection from evil will give you a better chance, but it's still not fool proof. That would likely be more in the clerical spell domain based on the nature of the spell. i would check with one of them."

As the party approaches Magpie crossing, V spots the people coming to meet them. All the people. V inwardly groans, just wanting to go relax and have a couple drinks, and not in the mood for lengthy explanations and storytelling. As he walks forward, seemingly resigned to his fate, an idea pops into his head, and a small smile creeps onto his face. "Perhaps I did not memorize all those extra teleports for nothing" he thinks to himself.

V moves his hand to his stomach, and makes an odd face and proclaims "Gentlemen, if you will excuse me, it appears that I ate something that didn't agree with me. I must retire to the privy in an exceptionally timely manner." following the final word of his sentence, V casts teleport and returns himself to his room in their residence at the crossing. Following which, he cleans up, grabs a drink, and kicks back until the others arrive.

Barratore will hold his arms outstretched and bellow, "you came to hear our tale of Gitterox?" Hoping to pull in the attention of everyone so that Brom could simply move on.

Barratore draws his sword and hold it high as he activates his enlargement enchantment upon his tauric torc. "With this very blade I shot the lord of shadows and cast his ruin on the rocks at my feet!" Barratore will tell how the party ripped open a portal into another plane and in that distant land befriended a people who were being beset by dark forces. The Defenders of the Vale then set about to save these people and in so doing, the Vale and Glitterox itself as Shadow demons had infested it and threatened all. The Defenders of the Vale were victorious and upon the destruction of the master shadow demon, Glitterox erupted and from the far plane, they were hurtled skyward only to come down near Frog Hollow. The lumps that were seen, is all that is left of the vanquished enemy.

Barratore is perfectly happy to accept drinks, buy drinks for others and generally create a large party about himself in Magpie.

"If you would like to walk with us to Magpie, we would be glad of the company," Evaris tells the hangers-on. "I can't answer for what will happen when we get there, though. Our group is not looking to expand its membership."

In Magpie Crossing, Evaris tries to answer peoples' questions as best he can, given that he doesn't understand all the details himself. "Evil creatures tried to gain control of the Glitterox. We defeated them, in a manner that caused the eruption. There wasn't a dragon, thank Pantheon, or none of us would be here."

Brom is amazed at the speed of information in the valley. It had been less than a day and the news had beaten Brom back to Magpie Crossing

Needless to say it didn't matter, Brom had a crowd in front of him. A crowd asking him question he had no idea how to answer. He didn't know what happened, but he was still bloodied from the battle and needed rest.

He headed back with the few townsfolk in tow that found Brom too much of a curiosity to leave be. He goes into the manner and finds V lounging. "Not surprised seein' you here." He says before heading up to his room. He takes off his gear and dresses in his civilian clothes- pants, loose shirt, boots- before heading back down and out of the manner. His destination is the hot springs for a bath and a long soak to clean up and clean his wounds.
