1 2 3 4 5 6 7 -- All Good Children Go To Heaven! (DM Cayzle)
Friday July 15th, 2016 12:14:35 AM

[OOC: Yesterday you were challenged to "come up with something your DMs have not anticipated" ... and therefore mad props indeed are due for the email idea of raising a mob to storm the Hands HQ! Who knows ... with your growing reputation and the right skill checks, it might have worked! And even madder props are due to those who let reason and morality squelch the idea! Well done, oh my players! FWIW, if you had roleplayed out that conversation in game, I'd be handing out bonus XP rewards right now! :-) Food for thought! ]

First to rise for the day, Stohp visits the Manor of the Mage to confirm the background stories of the two new party arcanists. The clubby locale, headed by Ogebin the Mage, is in a posher part of the Fence, and the cook at the back door confirms that Bobwise was an apprentice there, and that he had a scruffy friend who hangs around a lot.

Bartomus puts some thought and some intuition into his preparations for the day.

Martisan wants to sneak around the Hands HQ and scout. She invites Stohp, newly returned from his early errand, to join her. They discuss options but have not yet headed out.

Zanderallen takes the path of "special bribery" -- that is, giving bread to the hungry! Bobwise tags along, not wanting the paladin to be out all alone. He may not be very perceptive, but the halfling mage has hidden wisdom. Dorbin joins the pair, and the trio head into the seedier parts of the Fence, seeking out the ones who are hungry, for they often have the sharpest eyes.

K voices his intention to visit his family at the Temple of Flower for advice. Micah travels with him, more curious than concerned for the doughty K.

=====

Still at the warehouse home of the Silver Shields, Bart, Stohp, and Martisan talk about how to best scope out the Hands HQ without tipping off the fanatics that the party is onto them. What's your plan, good heroes?

=====

Micah and K visit the Temple of Flower on the Merchant Level. It serves as both a temple and an infirmary. Sure, the Temple of Alemi on the Open Air level offers healing unmatched in the Wold, but the indigent and the fearful feel more at ease visiting this working-class neighborhood when they need to tend to their health or give birth. That's not news to K, of course, but it may be a revelation to the inquisitive Micah.

At the Temple, it is easy to pick out K's mom. She's the one with the headband and the colorful hibiscus-pattern muumuu dress. And she is the one who shouts out, "KARMA! Come here right now!" There's no way you can say no to your mom, especially when she outranks you in the church hierarchy. And insists on a hug. Such is life, here at the Temple of Flower.

"Sister Delphia told us you were living in a rat-hole above a blacksmith shop! Really! She said, if I can recall her words, 'He seems to have found a dimensional rift that leads straight to the Trash Level.' Is that true? Didn't we teach you better?"

Her words, however, are punctuated by kisses and more hugs.

Then she releases her son and turns to Micah. "Ah, a follower of Domi. And a friend of my son. It is a pleasure." She turns back to Karma. "Well, are you going to introduce us?"

=====

Out on the streets of the worse and poorer parts of the Fence, Zander, Bobwise, and Dorbin have no trouble at all finding people who need their free bread. Near the Crook Street area, Zander's hunches suggest that the neighborhood kids will know more, especially the grubbier ones. Bobwise is no use at the hunt, but Dorbin sees an 8-year-old girl at play with some stones around one corner.

"Thanks!" she mutters around a mouthful of bread, chewed hard. "This is good." She looks ready to scamper off, except she is eyeing another large roll in Zander's basket.

K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10
Friday July 15th, 2016 8:44:48 AM

K sighs inwardly, but of course hugs his mother back. "Mother, this is Micah. Micah, this is Melody, my mother.

"...and you'll be glad to know I've moved up in the world. I'm living in a warehouse now. There are some lovely pallets to sleep on and plenty of rats to keep us company. Some of the nicest accommodations in The Fence."

His face turns serious. "Wish this were just a social visit, mom, but it's not. We've got issues. The Hands of Love are causing trouble, and there's a young woman involved that we're trying to save. Micah and I will tell you all about it over breakfast. I'm in time for breakfast, right? We should find dad too..and maybe Delphia since she obviously's taken a keen interest in my well being."

Over (hopefully) food, K fills his everyone in on the Octopus Gardens, the roving bands of self-appointed security officers roaming The Fence, and Briselda. "I was expecting an indoctrinated woman too stubborn to be saved, what I found was Brizzy, a young, happy girl who didn't realize what she had gotten herself into. She wasn't brainwashed. I let them take her away. She wanted to go, it was her choice...at least I think it was. I don't know, and I think I may have messed up by not being more forceful. You folks have always talked to me about letting those you love go, but this is The Hand we're talking about. I knew what she was getting into and I let it happen."

K's obviously upset about this, but maintains a stoic composure.

"Anyway, we want to tackle the problem. They're growing in power down in The Fence, and we aim to reverse that. We're...I'm just not sure how. They're not breaking any laws, and explaining to folks one at a time doesn't seem like a good use of time. There are a lot of those bloody cultists down there."

Bobwise (Jerry)  d20+2=3 ;
Friday July 15th, 2016 10:41:08 AM

Bobwise, having no luck gathering information, concentrates on helping. Especially children. As he passes out bread, he looks for a place selling jam to add to his repertoire of food options and looks for some come cakes and juicy pop as well. Whatever he can find.

As he gives out food, and some coppers, he is very aware of parents who may not approve of getting things from strangers. If such a case arises he will approach the parents instead.

Seeing that Zander and Dorbin seem to be better at getting folks to talk, he refers all thanks to them saying, "These two heroes did all the buying. It was their idea. I am just here to help. Go say thanks to them!"

To himself he thinks, ::I always thought the Fence Level to be pretty much a single demographic--working class. It surprises me to see the differences...and kinda sad really.::

He keeps his demeanor friendly and positive while working the street, but inside his mood is a bit darker. He doesn't give up on gathering information himself, but doesn't hold out much hope. [perception check failure, natural 1]

Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11]
Friday July 15th, 2016 12:03:56 PM

Bartomus listened to the description of the cult and the challenge presented by a young maiden finding her way into their collective hands. As he was listening, he laughed aloud when the femal Taur Stoph pointed out the challenges of hiding or sneaking in a crowd for their race. "Stoph, I have a bit of an idea, I carve," he pointed to his torc and ring, "and need supplies of bone and exotic woods for the buttons and things I make. What if you and I visit the markets, we could say we were working on a joint commission something with woven hearts and hands. See if anyone offers advice or takes a lot of interest in our work. It might be a way we could help get information."

Highlight to display spoiler: { Sorry folks was in Seattle all day yesterday, so posted early in the morning and then when I took a moment to check in via phone, the discussion was such that tapping out any rational response was a bit challenging. }

Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14]
Friday July 15th, 2016 12:50:23 PM

Dorbin elbows Zander, waiting for him to take the lead on questioning the girl, and gestures towards the bread and the girl again.

Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14
Friday July 15th, 2016 2:14:02 PM

Stohp listens to Bart's idea respectfully, but doesn't seem convinced. "Zander and the others are already quizzing the locals for any information they can find, I'm not sure if fishing via pretense will get us anything they won't."

She leans back and thinks for a few moments. "Here's a truly mind boggling idea; lets go visit the guard. It's their job to police things, and the cult has stepped on toes everywhere we've seen them. Surely the guard has heard of them, and if they're investigating them they might have useful information. Even if they don't, with their man-power we can stake out the Hand's base and see what they're up to."

Micah (Zachary posting for John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13
Friday July 15th, 2016 3:04:52 PM

Micah's eyebrows shoot up as he hears K's full name but holding back a laugh he restrains himself, and with little more than a twinkle in his eyes he greets K's mother, "A pleasure to meet you Melody." He remains mostly silent, letting K do the talking but adding in details when needed. Over the food and conversation he looks around at the others at the temple observing how they live out their spiritual lives.

Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 23/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 15  d20+9=26 ; d20+7=16 ; d20+1=6 ;
Friday July 15th, 2016 3:26:42 PM

Zanderallen is full of smiles for the children, thinking back to his own days growing up on the streets. Taking the hint from Dorbin with a slight chuckle at the half-elf's awkwardness. With a big smile and a wink Zander passes the girl another roll and a sweet if Bobwise managed to find any, "You're quite the healthy eater, what's your name? Do you know anything about the people who own that warehouse?", pointing to the Hand's HQ, "If you could give us any information or bring someone who knows anything I might have some extra rolls here. It's really important that we learn about who's inside that warehouse."

Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11]
Friday July 15th, 2016 6:31:20 PM

"Direct, straight forward, I can shop along the way if needed," Bartomus ticked off the phrases with his fingers. "Alright, I am game, let's give that a try."

Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 14/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14
Saturday July 16th, 2016 2:59:17 AM

As she discusses their plans with the minotaurs, Martisan silently berates herself for her lack of forethought the night before. "It'd have been nice to scout out the Hands' warehouse last night." She says with a wistful sigh. "Lot harder to snoop around during the day." Martisan feels a strange sense of nostalgia, remembering a former Silver Shield who often expressed similar sentiments.

The halfling shrugs, and smiles at the plan to seek out the Floating City guardsmen. "Happy, Grok, 'n the other business leaders asked us to help with these kinda issues because the guards don't like to trouble themselves with problems on the Fence. It's an excellent idea, but then we're counting on cooperation from not the most helpful of folks." She heads out with Stohp and Bartomus, thoughtfully silent while they leave the warehouse, then starts suddenly before they've gone far from the building. "You guys go ahead, I'm going to gather a few supplies. If their warehouse is anything like ours, we might be able to make a quieter entrance through an upper story window. I'm afraid at this point a direct assault may be our only other option. Any last minute gear you want me to grab?"

Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11]
Saturday July 16th, 2016 6:13:16 AM

"No, I think the glaive and the sling will be the best options for me...a bit odd to wander with the glaive, but sheathed I guess I can just treat it like a walking stick." Bartomus checked his sling and it's bullet pouch. He gave a quick nod to Martisan that he was in fact prepared as best as he could be. He started off with Stohp to find the Guard's post.

Let's just pray you do not encounter danger we thought would be handled by the whole party!! Muahaha! Also note! =====

At the infirmary and shrine to Flower on the Merchant Level

Gathering up Daneel, her husband, and Delphia, K's theosophy mentor, the formidable Melody quickly finds a table in the refectory, where a novice brings them a simple meal of bread, poached fish, and a few oranges to share among them. K knows that the oranges would not generally appear at this meal, but it is a sign that his mother is celebrating.

Micah listens intently and is polite, but says little of substance. He keeps his eyes open, looking for insight into how these followers of Flower live. He observes that they seem to follow an "order," that is, a pattern for living a reflective life. Bells ring from time to time to signal the end of one activity and the start of another. Most of the devoted followers -- "brothers" and "sisters" they are called, judging by the way they address each other -- dress simply in clean plain clothes. There are only a few wearing the headband and floral pattern outfit like Melody wears. Micah also sees one person dressed all in grey and wearing a flower mask; mostly people ignore that fellow as he helps them out with all manner of chores and tasks. The greatest hustle and bustle, where the routine of order is broken, is in the great infirmary ward-room where common folk come for care; Micah and K passed through that as they entered.

Over the meal, K explains everything, everything about the Silver Shield's quest to rescue this girl, this young woman, from the Hands of Love. When he says this, "She wanted to go, it was her choice...at least I think it was. I don't know, and I think I may have messed up by not being more forceful ..." Daneel raises his hand to interreupt.

"Son, wait. Go no further with your self-recriminations. I know that by training you see solutions with force. And do not get me wrong -- there is evil in this Wold that cannot be stopped else by force. That's why I have supported you in this path you have taken." He glances at Melody, and K is reminded that his mother was less "supportive." Daneel continues, "But we do not follow Ga'al, who tries to force all to do as he knows best. No, we counsel, convince, and cooperate." K knows that's a saying among Flower folk. "You were right not to coerce. If she is to leave the cult, it must be through suasion, not by the sword."

K finishes his story, and then Sister Delphia weighs in. "Karma," she says, "you know that the mysteries of life remain mysterious. Why do the divine intervene in life? What is our place in nature and existence? Why do some find faith in one, and others in another? How can opposing divinities even exist in the same multiverse?" These words are well worn stones from her mouth; K has heard her say this on many occaisions. Then she says something unexpectd. "Now that you are out in the Wold, it is your duty to help others understand their choices. Not to force those choices," and she nods to Daneel, "but to ensure that those choices are freely made. Go, give this girl her choice. That is a noble thing to do. I am proud of you."

"Well, yes, of course we are all proud," says Melody. "But you need some practical advice too. First off, Caeroldra is Flower's mother, as you know, and between mothers and their children there can never be hatred. Between Ga'al and Domi," and she nods to Micah, "there is anger and hate. Between Caeroldra and Flower there is sorrow and love."

"Therefore, do not hate the Hands of Love, whatever their offense. Stop them from doing evil, yes. Convince those you can to turn from the path that requires compliance with their perversions. But we do not want a war between Caeroldra and Flower in this city. Do you understand me, K? No holy war! We do not want the town crier to shout that a paladin of Flower has cut down a high priest of Caeroldra! Your squabbles on the Fence must not rock the Float!" She glares fiercely at her son.

Then her voice softens. "That is Mother Melody speaking, K." K knows that when she invokes her title of Mother, she is speaking as a hierarch. But for her to call him K is a concession and a sign of love. "Speaking as your mom, I just ask you not to get killed. Okay?"

=====

Back on the Fence, Bobwise worries that parents will be concerned about strangers handing out food and goodies to children. But on reflection, he puts his worries away. Here on the Fence, he knows, there are bad guys, for sure. But monsters? Monsters who would poison or mistreat kids? If such monsters are to be found on the Float, it would be in the darkness of the Trash Level, but not here. Yes, gangs run on the Fence, and thieves, and even the odd assassin. The Fence is not safe for a lone adult, sure, and even seasoned adventurers may be set upon ... but children run here and there across the Fence, and everyone -- even the hardened blackguards and bouncers and bagmen -- look out for them. Reflecting on these matters, perhaps his mood lightens? Perhaps he is reassured.

Dorbin, more focussed on the practical, silently nudges Zander and urges him to talk with the girl.

Zanderallen warms to the girl, and she to him. She talks with her mouth full about her life, and Zander sees a lot of his own experiences growing up. They even know some of the same people, like that old chef who cooks at the Sifting Sands restaurant and who leaves out his scraps and leftovers sometimes. There's a new lady like that, the girl tells him, who brings out food every night aroundabouts where Zander is pointing. "She's nice, and she got some fancy food too! Like CAKE!"

It may occur to Zander that showing his face at the Hands central strong point might lead to conflict that the three of them alone might be hard-pressed to resist ...

=====

Back at the Silver Shield HQ, Bartomus has a clever idea! He recalls a market over by that way, and he knows he could shop that area without raising a stir. In fact, he has visited a couple stalls over that way before. A guy buys buttons from him, and there's a knife seller he likes. And since he's new, no one will know him as a Silver Shield.

Small and sneaky. Martisan mentions scouting by night. That would mean a day of delay, though ...

Stohp suggests visiting the local guard outpost. There are four, of course, one at each of the corners where people can ascend to a higher level in the Float. Some people think that those guards are guarding the upper Float from the riff-raff in the Fence and the Trash. But Stohp knows that they have the job of policing things and fighting criminals. Surely they will be able to help.

Three ideas, three paths ... none mutually exclusive. One or all three? Each to his own path, or three together taking them one at a time? What do you do?

Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11]
Saturday July 16th, 2016 9:05:44 PM

"Stohp, let's kill a couple of birds with a single stone," Bartomus said as they were heading to a Guard outpost. "I can do some shopping, and maybe pick up a nice bone knife that could be a bit easier to rely upon than this giant tree trunk of a stick. Let's work the market along the way to Outpost. We can grab a bit to eat along the way as well."

Bartomus follows along trying to steer towards the Outpost near the market with one of his customers.

Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 15/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14
Sunday July 17th, 2016 1:29:52 PM

Martisan nods at Bart's suggestion, "Sounds good to me! I'm just looking to grab some rope and a couple grappling hooks, myself." She gives the big druid a sly smile. "Most of the taller buildings on the Fence here have windows up on the second or third floor, so maybe, if we're lucky, a few of us might be able to slip right into their base where they least expect it, and avoid the guards at the front door."

She shrugs as she continues to follow the two minotaurs. "Worth a look, at least. I've been meaning to pick up a grappling hook for a few days now, since we had a fight with some thugs in an alley outside the Silver Shield warehouse. And I'm all for grabbing a bite to eat on the way!"

K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10
Monday July 18th, 2016 8:25:28 AM

K listens to the advice of his parents, visibly relaxing at his father's confirmation that he made the right choice, and just slightly wincing at Mother Melody's recriminations.

It's good advice, but still feels like they're trying to get him to act as a priest, rather than a paladin. Doesn't mean they're wrong, of course.

One thing he does consider worth taking to heart is his views on Caeoldra's followers.

"Maybe I'm too busy looking for an enemy to do battle with." He picks up an orange, nodding to his mother to acknowledge her gesture. "What about The Hand's hard-love tactics? Brainwashing's a thing, right? If there are folks being tortured or forcefully coerced into their beliefs, that should be stopped, shouldn't it? I don't think Brizzie was there; that's why I insisted she be let go to follow her own path. What if she's been tortured into fanaticism next time we see her? Aren't there laws against that in The Float?"

He looks at his mother, really not wanting to say what he's about to say, but knowing he can't lie to the woman. "...and I maaaay have told 3 priests of Caeoldra that I'd hold them personally responsible if Brizzie showed up with any signs of hard-love on her." He quickly interjects before she can answer, "I didn't say I'd hurt them, just that I'd hold them responsible."

He peels the orange as he waits her response.

Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14]
Monday July 18th, 2016 9:35:28 AM

Dorbin whispers to Zander, "That might be our way in, especially if that woman is nice to the kids around here. Should we head back and tell the others?"

Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11]
Monday July 18th, 2016 10:27:27 AM

"A grappling hook, some strong rope, a decent knife, talk to some of the guards, and something to break the morning's fast," Bartomus said as they walked along the twisting paths of the Fence. "Sounds like the start of a morning plan for certain. Hey Stohp, whatcha ya looking for this morning?

He follows after Stohp casting his eyes about the place taking in the bustle of the morning in the Fence.

Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 23/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 15
Monday July 18th, 2016 10:44:54 AM

Knowing that's he's probably a target to the Hand at this stage and getting the sense they'd pushed their luck far enough, Zander thanks the little girl, "You've been a huge help. I'll probably be around later. Hope to chat with you again. Sadly I have some other errands I have to run. Good bye little one." Handing her one last chunk of bread he motions to Dorbin and Bobwise to move out.

Once they're on their way he says, "I think that's all we're going to get and I'd rather not risk a run in with the Hand guards digging for more. They can be rather passionate about people snooping around. And it looks like we may have discovered a possible way in or source of information. Let's get back to the warehouse to rejoin the others."

Bobwise (Jerry)
Monday July 18th, 2016 2:05:19 PM

Nodding in agreement, Bobwise adds, "I agree Zander. And if you don't mind the praise, you are good at this."

As they leave, he gives the rest of his food to the girl and says, "Pass this on to others who need it, kid. Be good!"

"Should we head back to the warehouse to see what luck the others have had? I suppose I could go ask around at the Manor of the Mage and see what is known there? However, I am hesitant to take such business there as it is supposed to be a refuge of sorts and not a hotbed of intrigue. I do have a few strings I can probably pull, though, since everyone there knows I'm just getting started and might need a hand. What do you think?"

Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14
Monday July 18th, 2016 2:28:41 PM

Stohp shrugs. "Just something for breakfast on the way. Lets get going or the others will make it back before we even leave."

Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 15/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14
Monday July 18th, 2016 3:17:16 PM

"Yeah. I'll keep my shopping quick." Martisan agrees, keeping her eyes open for a vendor with the simple climbing tools she's looking for, hoping to find someone selling specialty grappling hooks that can be shot from a bow. "If you want to go ahead to the guard station, we can meet you in the marketplace on your way back to the warehouse, then we can meet up with the others." She says to Stohp, pausing to get a proper whiff of a nearby food vendor's wares.

Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11]
Monday July 18th, 2016 3:27:48 PM

Bartomaus nodds in agreement with both of his new companions. "Lead on Stohp, I try to avoid the Guards as much as possible."

Micah (John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13  d20+6=8 ; d20+6=12 ;
Monday July 18th, 2016 8:38:12 PM

Micah is delighted to be a guest of this truly pious family. Their perspective on the current situation, though different in emphasis than would be heard from wise ones of his own order, reveals a keen discernment he intends to not neglect.

As he observes and hears various features of this religious community he realizes that his theological training spent little time on the practices of the worshipers of Flower [Knowledge Religion 6 and 12].

Not wishing to divert from the current topic, he holds his questions about the masked man and the significance of his mother's title until the walk back with K. Although having now heard his true name, he still thinks of him by that sobriquet.

Upon hearing K's last statement, and seeing his uneasiness, Micah breaks his thoughtful and observant silence, "And I, as well as the rest of the Shield, are committed to her protection. You were not speaking for yourself, but all of us when you made that proclamation." His back is straight and his expression calm expecting that any reply of K's mother will be less sharp now that it would be delivered to a guest as well as to her son.

[OOC: good to be back. Thanks Zachary for subbing for Micah so well.]

A Hard Day's Night - Part 2 - (DM Mstitt)
Monday July 18th, 2016 10:26:17 PM

Bartomus suggests to Stohp that they kill a couple birds with a single stone and shop as they head to the guard tower. As Bartomus says that, you see a poultry vendor with a crudely drawn chicken above his head. Chickens squawk and fight near it. They get close enough to cause people to stumble but far enough away to avoid injury to themselves.

Martisan agrees and advises she needs to pick up some grappling hooks.
There is a second vendor across the street. Looks like a blacksmith, with smoke billowing from behind a rough looking fighter. There are iron works hanging in front of the man followed by other gear. (Please roll a perception check vs. DC10 to find any stock gear found in the Core equipment list with a cost of 10gp or less; DC15 to find gear costing 20gp or less; DC20 to find gear costing 50 gp each or less.)

Stohp is concerned that they will not have much time before the party has to get back together, so urgency is needed.

[OOC: Super important question! The above shopping is NEAR but not in sight of the Hands HQ. Do Bart, Martisan and/or Stohp enter the marketplace square next to and in sight of the Hands HQ? And if so, WHO exactly?!]

=====

K listens to his parents. He relaxes when his father confirms he had made the right choice. He agrees to the advice and it makes him think.

“The problem, Karma, is this,” his mother began. “Without intimate knowledge of these hard-love tactics, who are you to judge if it’s extreme or not. The goddess Flower requires that we perform our love. This performance can be looked at with a strange eye. Why would these strange people… speaking of the Devotees… dance all the time. Don’t they get tired? What if they don’t want to dance?”

“Another lesson,” his father interrupts, “Threats, you have to be cautionary with threats. The responsibilities lay with the speaker of that threat. There is an obligation put forward. If that makes sense. It is not pride that should drive you, but your obligation to serve. Perhaps, in this case, it means that saving the misguided young woman is a greater obligation than confronting the Hands of Love publicly.”

Micah is quiet. He observes the family. He listens intently. Seeing K’s uncomfort, Micah breaks his silence. He ensures the family knows that the Silver shield is behind K and the promise of protection for Brizzie.

Soon the meal is over, and the duo offer their good-byes. [OOC: Any final questions, requests, or skill checks you two want to make?]

=====

Dorbin whispers to Zander that the woman who is nice to kids is a way in.

Zanderallen agrees, but fears that the trio has been stationary too long. A few Caerolda guards appear from an open air restaurant. They laugh and seem to be concerned with cajoling a younger guard into talking to a beautiful liontaur. She had a distinguished white streak along the right side of her dark thick mane, and her tail twitches seductively.

Bobwise is ready to leave the vicinity, but wonders aloud if it would be worthwhile to swing by the Manor of the Mage to sniff out rumors. He’s not sure that the wizards who frequent the Manor would know something specific about this, but they do know things -- sometimes things worth knowing!

[OOC: So? To the Manor of the Mage or back to the Silver Shields home?]

Tuesday July 19th, 2016 12:49:08 AM

Bartomus walked over to the blacksmith's stall and looked about. Highlight to display spoiler: { DC Check - failed...lordy lordy did it fail. } "Well, i don't see the knife I was hoping to find here. I think I will head over there."
Bartomus continued to wander about the Market looking for a knife, and looking about this area of the Fence.

Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14]
Tuesday July 19th, 2016 8:14:49 AM

Dorbin replies to Bobwise, "If you think they can provide us some information, we might as well swing by there on our way back. I don't really know any of them, other than their writings."

K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10
Tuesday July 19th, 2016 8:52:00 AM

K closes his eyes for a moment & blocks out everything else. It's a skill his parents taught him, so he doesn't worry about seeming rude. He just needs a moment to collect his scattered thoughts.

He had great respect for his parents' wisdom, much more so than for his own. He wasn't a blind follower, however. Otherwise he'd be Brother Karma.

It is possible he threatened 3 well-meaning people. That was wrong of him as a paladin of Flower. Maybe not as a paladin of Domi, but he'd made the choice to follow Flower. Her teachings dictate he apologize for his actions.

He does not know enough about the actions of The Hand to deduce they are up to no good. Doesn't mean they aren't, and things are fishy enough to warrant further investigation, but he shouldn't approach this as a black & white situation based on what he knows.

Caeoldra's followers should not elicit such an extreme response from him. Maybe a talk with the priests of her temple would be in order.

Finally, he tries to figure out his place as a paladin in all this. "I fight on behalf of those who can't to make sure love can grow. If Brizzie wants to be reunited with her father, but The Hand subverts that attempt, it will be time to stand against them. Until then, they are deserving of love, no matter how perverted their dogma."

K opens his eyes. "Ok, centered," he states calmly. He stands up and hugs both parents & Sister Delphia farewell. "Don't worry, I'll make you all proud," is all he says before he takes his leave.

***

He chats with Micah after they leave. "Thanks for coming along. I'm sure my parents are more at ease knowing I'm not out there alone doing Flower-knows-what.

"I need to go apologize to The Hand for my threats. They're probably justified on some level, but it's not right for a follower of Flower to talk like that, even a paladin. Especially a paladin. I'll go tonight after I'm sure the rest of the Shields aren't over there doing recon." He looks Micah in the eyes. "I know this may not be a popular decision, but I've gotta do it. Ignoring Flower's teachings because it feels good at the time will only lead me away from the goddess. I can't start down that road."

He'll wait to see what the rest of the Silver Shields have to say about their day first.

Bobwise (Jerry)
Tuesday July 19th, 2016 11:49:22 AM

Shrugging, he comments to Dorbin and Zander, "I guess it couldn't hurt to go ask at the Manor, Dorbin. Besides the time is past due for you to see the INSIDE. :)

"What do you think, Zander?

"I'm also beginning to think that a first good move would be to simply knock on the door of the Hands of Love location and ask about the girl. Say the truth. Her parents are worried and asked us to check on her. Tell them we'd like to take her home for the night, if she is willing, and she can return the next day if she wishes. We can then judge their reactions and hers if we get to see her. What do you think?"

Bobwise's thoughts race along:

::I talk too much.::

::It feels weird to be consulting with others on such decisions, yet I know that is the wise thing to do. I am used to making a quick decision and acting on it. I wonder how that will play out in combat, which is inevitable with an adventuring group.::

Part of him is worried about that. Part of him can't wait.

He fingers his Wand of Magic Missiles and smiles.

Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14  d20+6=15 ; d20+6=24 ; d20+3=12 ;
Tuesday July 19th, 2016 2:30:03 PM

Stohp nibbles on a pastry she picked up somewhere, leaning against a wall and looking over the vender's stock. Hearing Bartomus' comment she rolls her eyes and points. "That merchant right over there hsa plenty of knives Bartomus." (perception 15)

Not wanting anything from the vender for herself, Stohp decides to take a peak at the Hands HQ (perception 24). She tries not to be to obvious about it though, since she doesn't want the guards to notice her staring (stealth 12).

Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 23/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 15
Tuesday July 19th, 2016 3:23:59 PM

Zander looks on at the antics of the Hand guards, saddened by how they take good things and push them to extremes of passion. Even if what he sees here is innocent horse play everything the Hand pushes does not seem so. Considering Bobwise's proposal, he thinks on Domi's ways. He knows it is his place to stand up to them for so much pointed to them hurting and dominating those unable to resist them. But how to know when diplomacy has failed? "I would be agreeable to checking at the Mage's Manor. As to knocking on their front door. Yesterday we met with Briselda in the Octopus Gardens and spoke with her. Almost immediately three priests of the Hand appeared and swept her away. Although she went willingly she was taken under guard to this warehouse. While she was open to hearing from us we could not get her to promise to meet with her father. After that we heard how Shredds has had his men go into that warehouse and come out completely loyal to the Hand. I fear if we don't get her out soon, she won't be left to save. If we knock it should be all 8 of us. I'm wrestling with how to save someone from a brain washing they're willingly walking into. Maybe K and Micah will have answers from the followers of Flower. Lead on to the Mage's Manor."

Zanderallen grows outwardly silent as inwardly his thoughts rage. He is sworn to stand up to those who would hurt or dominate others and taught to use diplomacy first. But he was also taught to be ready to be the first to swing a blow when words have failed. And his gut was telling him that the sweet young girl he had met this afternoon would soon be lost. Maybe giving their door a good knock out wasn't such a bad idea. Unconsciously checking his sword in his scabbard he steps out with purpose, knowing what he must recommend as their course of action when the Shields met back up.

Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11]
Tuesday July 19th, 2016 4:05:09 PM

"That merchant right over there hsa plenty of knives Bartomus." Stohp's voice caught his attention, but he had already started down one of the paths towards the Hand's warehouse, keeping his eyes darting about for a knife merchant, or someone selling exotic woods for carving. He raised his hand and waived it at Stohp, and seeing a cart with various delicious foods and smells, he stopped and purchased a small meat pie. As he was eating it, he looked about trying to see where he might be.

What a Scene! (DM Cayzle)  d20-2=14 ; d20-2=-1 ;
Tuesday July 19th, 2016 7:13:02 PM

Bartomus failed to find the knife at the blacksmith. “Hey, you,” shouted another dealer from a stall down the way. Along the sides of the stall, skins from numerous game animals. Along the top, was a string, on that string hung several small bone artifacts. From Bartomus’s position he can only see a fan made out of small bones and leather.
“You don’t want that guy’s stuff. He is a crook.” Suddenly, the vendor stood, his face red.
“Jacob!” Shouted the large fighter. “Don’t you say another word.” Jacob smiled and grabbed a long bone staff from a circular bin. “He once sold some metal wings to a mermaid.” The made Jacob laugh and the blacksmith dropped what he was doing and began to march around the stall he stood behind. “Whoa now big man,” Jacob said. “I’m just trying to catch me a potential customer.” Jacob stepped back as the bag man approached. Bart steps away, having failed to find what he wants.

Meanwhile, Stohp nibbles on a pastry as the blacksmith stomps around the stall. She points at several knives of the kind Bart wants hanging from a third vendor’s stall. There, Bart can quietly make the desired transaction while the other two vendors continue their loud argument.

If you can split your attention from the brewing trouble at the market you look at the plain building that holds the presumed headquarters of the Hands. It’s a large building, with four floors, and no visible windows in the third and fourth floors. There are windows on the ground level and second. There is a large set of wooden doors in the front of the building. There is a pair of Caeroldra guards posted at the door. There is a second smaller door to one side.

Bart continues to wander deeper into the market, closer to the Hands of Love building. He is so intent on shopping ... but is it really the shopping that he is concerned about? Or is he scoping out the Hands of Love HQ? Your kindly DMs assume it is the latter hedden by good acting ...

Martisan, on the other hand, is well aware that the Hands of Love know the Silver Shields by reputation AND appearance! She stays well back, out of line of sight of the deeper market AND the Hands.

Stohp, on the other hand, trusts in her stealth. Will her sneaking succeed? Peering around a stall, she peeks and spies at the Hands of Love HQ in the marketplace at Crook Square. At her closest, she is about 60 feet from the two Hands guards standing at the entrance of the Hands HQ. The guards are Wis12 level 3 Warriors with max ranks in Perception, but it is not a class skill for them, so with the distance mod, they have a net -2 on their Perception checks. They roll their checks, getting a 14 and a -1. Stohp’s stealth check was a 12. One of the guards shouts, “THERE! That’s one of them! The minotaur!” He shouts an alarm, startles his friend, points, draws his longsword, and cuts the distance between himself and Stohp in half.

Will Stohp beat a wise retreat -- or make a stand, with only two of her friends in a position to help her? She and Bart together could now draw a decent map of Crook’s Square, so even after a retreat, you will have something to show for your effort ...

=====

K and Micah make their way home in a contemplative frame of mind, They find that they are the first of their friends to return.

=====

Zanderallen, Bobwise, and Dorbin talk about their approach as they walk to the Manor fo the Mage. They ponder the straightforward approach -- just knocking on the door and asking to speak with Brizzie. But what if the Hands of Love say “No!”?

The Manor of the Mage is well-known to Bobwise, of course, since he was trained within. His pal Dorbin knows it, of course, but seldom has seen the interior. Zander, of course, is new to the place. It is rather a bit of a social club for wizards and other arcanists -- especially those who want to “slum” it on the Fence or in the Trash, and want a comfy base of operations. Of course, Bobwises’s old mentor is THE Mage, though getting on in years. The three adventurers, knowing that the fancy front door is not for the likes of them, sneak around to the servants’ entrance. There, Bobwise’s old friend, the head chef, sits them down in the kitchen and feeds them pastries. Cookie nods and is glad to gossip:

“Well, there’s rumors that that old has-been Rielbel Thalras wants to renew his membership. But after he got drunk and threw up at the Master’s Mask-Day Dinner two years ago, I can’t see the Selections Committee approving it!”

“And there’s the usual whining about the WayStation going on the fritz. Nobody’s got hurt, but I heard that a shipment of Gateway Downs Red got sliced and smashed in a malfunction.”

“And stories say that there have been undead incidents on the Upper Levels, and some new group of heroes is tackling that. Regular hot-shots they are, some say. We’ll see.”

But even with prompting, there’s no news about the Hands of Love that the three heroes can learn here. [OOC hint: Skill checks never hurt, my friends!!!]

=====

Zander, Bob, and Dorbin make their way back home, arriving about a half hour after K and Micah get back. Hmmm? Perhaps they wonder what’s keeping Stohp and the two new casters?

Micah (John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13
Tuesday July 19th, 2016 7:17:12 PM

As K closes is eyes and goes silent, Micah watches in curiosity. He is well versed in meditating. Doing so before a prayer, going into combat, or confronting a challenge is quite natural to him, but doing so before saying goodbye is a new one.

Detecting the newly focused sense of purpose in his friend when he is finished, Micah cannot deny the value of his private moment of introspection.

"Melody. Daneel. Delphia," bowing to each as he addresses them individually, "Thank you for your hospitality and most of all for your wisdom and assurance. It is good for this devotee of Domi to be reminded that there is not only one wise way to live. Know that Karma is not alone in his struggles." With this he joins K in departing.

Micah expects K has something to say and waits for him to do so. He returns the gaze and holds it while forming his response. After a moments pause, he quietly says, "K, I disagree that your words to those guards were inappropriate for anyone, including a paladin. I feel that those words were true, sincere, and should serve as a warning to them if they truly intended harm and serve as a reminder even if they did not."

He pauses to grab each of K's wrists as one would clasp in a warrior's greeting and continues "Having said that, I can see your conviction and will not try to dissuade you from doing this. Rather, know that I will be with you when you talk them."

He releases his grip and continues talking, "Of course, that does not mean we should do this unplanned. We have a saying, Bravery and foolishness should not be forged from the same iron. For you replace "bravery" with "love" and apply it to this course of action. We will need to plan this with the rest of the group. Provided we are properly prepared, your speaking with them may give us an opening should they not respond in kind. For example, we can have the others discreetly nearby and Martisan can have her handy message spell cast. You can and should do what you feel you need to do, but not without all of us together."

The rest of the walk back he plies him with questions about the various practices and customs he observed, including the devotee and the mask and the significance of his mother's title.

Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11]
Wednesday July 20th, 2016 12:39:17 AM

Bartomus wandered over to the third merchant and tries to find a knife that would fit well in his hand. He narrowed his choice down to what would for anyone else be a good sized dagger. "What's your best price between these two?"

He continued to talk with the merchant turning himself in such a way as to watch where Stohp was in relationship to the Hand's warehouse. He sized up the guards and the building's entrances. Turning back to the merchant, he argued for a better price than the man was offering.

[quote] One of the guards shouts, “THERE! That’s one of them! The minotaur!” [/quote]

Bartomus turns away from the merchant while he reached into a pouch tucked inside his shirt fishing for a few gold coins. What is the shouting about?

He watched as the guard dashed towards Stohp.

"Cousin, I am over here, I think you got confused." He yelled across the market, waiving his arms trying to turn the attention of folks to himself in order to give Stohp some cover.

Hearing the guard's shout, Martisan moves from the edge of the marketplace to better see the Hands' base of operations and her two large companions (Perception 25).

"No time; more will come soon. We gotta skedaddle." She whispers, pointing to Stohp and Bartomus, who hear her curt reminder as a quiet lilt over the staccato percussion of the marketplace. Martisan waits a moment to make sure they both caught the message before heading back toward their own warehouse headquarters.

K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10
Wednesday July 20th, 2016 8:19:59 AM

K hears what Micah is saying, & nods appropriately. "For a paladin of Domi, it would have been an appropriate gesture. For a paladin of Flower, it's a bit murkier." He sighs a bit. "Frankly, being a paladin of Flower is turning out to be pretty murky, though I have no doubt she'll guide me through this."

***

When Zander and the two new little guys show up, he fills them in. "I need to apologize to The Hand for my threats. They were not appropriate, even if they were justified. After that, I think we'd be well served by talking to a high priest of Caeroldra at her temple. We don't know how much their church sanctions what The Hand is doing down here."

Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 23/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 15
Wednesday July 20th, 2016 9:32:31 AM

Zander listens to K, at first dubious to the idea of K apologizing but then coming around as K explains it. "I believe your threats to be well founded and in the interest of prtecting Briselda but far be it from me to stand in the way of a man acting as he believes his faith calls for. However as Micah said we will not allow you to approach their HQ alone. We will remain at a discreet distance, but if something goes wrong you'll have no more than a count of 5 to find a diplomatic solution. We should go as soon as the others get back. Wonder what's taking them so long."

Zanderallen then sums up what they found out, thinking aloud that Martisan or Bobwise might be able to pose as a child and talk to the lady handing out the cakes. As long as they could be disguised to not be easily recognized.

Wandering up to his room while he waits he sees something he had missed. Sitting on the window sill is a little plant weaving back and forth. Looking a little wilted he rushes to water it. Claiming my lotto gift from April 27th.

Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11]
Wednesday July 20th, 2016 10:32:31 AM

Bartomus handed six gold pieces to the merchant for the knife after hearing Martisan's warning. He slipped the knife into his belt and looked about for where Stohp was heading. He also tried to find a path away from the guards and back towards the Shield's warehouse.

Bobwise (Jerry)
Wednesday July 20th, 2016 12:04:19 PM

Bobwise answers quickly. "I do not wish to disguise myself as a child. No, I do not wish to do that."

Changing the subject, he says, "I also worry about going to Caeroldra's temple. I think it likely that the Hands of Love will have at least 1 and probably more sympathizers inside the temple and we will further tip our hand. But just because I worry about it, does not mean I'm against it.

"The clincher for me is that you met with her and them yesterday and they wouldn't let her talk. I think that is justification enough for us to pull her out."

"For me the choice is whether to start peacefully and simply say we are taking the girl home to her parents. Then, of course, we will escalate things when they deny us. This makes us feel better about our methods.

"Or knowing that they will deny us, we use the benefit of surprise and stealth to take her. This has the hindrance of giving the Hands of Love a legitimate sounding way to complain about it. I don't think it would stand up in court as we were just taking the girl home. That could be lessened IF we took her to Flower's temple rather than home for refuge and brought her parents there."

"I know I'm new here so I will do as asked."

K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10
Wednesday July 20th, 2016 12:10:20 PM

K shakes his head. "We're not pulling that girl out unless she wants to come. If she wants to come, but doesn't have the courage to say so in front of The Hand, that's still her choice. It's clear from our last meeting that she thinks The Hand is something she wants to be a part of."

"However, if she wants to come and The Hand won't let her...well, then we'll likely have a fight on our hands. No pun intended."

Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14]
Wednesday July 20th, 2016 2:35:53 PM

Dorbin pipes up, "Yes, I don't know how to convince her to come with us if she doesn't want to go. Unless we can prove she is under some compulsion or magical means have been used to convince her. I don't have that kind of magical power, though I could put a few guards to sleep while we talked to her..."

Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14  d20+17=28 ;
Wednesday July 20th, 2016 7:13:33 PM

Sighing in exasperation, Stohp walks calmly around the corner back into the crowded market, cutting line of sight with the guards. Slipping on her Hat of Disguise, she changes her appearance (Disguise 28). Rather than become an entirely different person this time, she works a more subtle change. Now she's a bit taller, with horns that haven't been shortened, fur and clothing a bit different, and facial features altered.

The overall result is that she clearly looks like someone else up close, but could be easily be mistaken for herself from a distance. Also, unless they were looking closely, the people in the market will have not noticed the sudden change so she won't be given away by stares. Now she just has to hope her fellow shields play along and she can get rid of these idiots.

Seriously, who on earth decides to leave their post to pick a fight in broad daylight? If she didn't have other places to be it would be a pleasure to lead them into an ambush, or distract them while the rest of the group sneaked in.

K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10
Wednesday July 20th, 2016 8:08:04 PM

"The rest of the Shields were pretty heavy handed with her last time we met. We've given her a moment to think about what she wants. At this point, I think we just show up and see if she'd like us to take her to her dad. If she says no, she says no, and we respect that.

"Then, we continue investigating The Hand to make sure they're not up to no good."

Passionfruit- (DM Mstitt)
Wednesday July 20th, 2016 9:26:01 PM

Micah says a polite farewell to K’s family. He replies and disagrees with K assessment. He grasp K by the hand and cements his support. Back at the Shields warehous, he advises that K should not move ahead unplanned and they should tell the rest of the group.

K hears what Micah is saying but corrects him. "Frankly, being a paladin of Flower is turning out to be pretty murky, though I have no doubt she'll guide me through this,” he admits. When he meets with Zander and the others, he offers the idea of meeting those followers of Caeroldra to offer an apology..

Zander tells K he should follow his faith and that the group has his back. He adds that K will have a very short time to find a diplomatic solution. Zander then goes over a plan that he has in mind. After the discussion he finds a magic plant in his room.

Bobwise does not want to be disguised as a child. He is concerned about going directly to face the followers of Caeroldra. He is worried that it may be a bit more difficult. He adds that the fact that the Hands are preventing Briselda from leaving justifies a rescue but it would have to be a careful, diplomatic rescue. If that fails then, he suggests, they take her by force and possibly hide her within the temple of Flower.

K replies, "We're not pulling that girl out unless she wants to come. If she wants to come, but doesn't have the courage to say so in front of The Hand, that's still her choice. It's clear from our last meeting that she thinks The Hand is something she wants to be a part of ... However, if she wants to come and The Hand won't let her...well, then we'll likely have a fight on our hands. No pun intended."
Dorbin offers to put a few guards asleep while they discuss the issue with Brizzie.

=====

Back in Crook Square, Martisan hears the shouting guard and urges the others to run.

Bartomus steps over to the third merchant. The blacksmith and the bone collector argue behind him. The merchant is thoroughly distracted by the argument. Shakes off the distraction and pushes for four gold pieces. He pauses when Bartomus tosses six gp at him. The merchant stepped back and allowed Bartomus to grab the knife.
Bartomus tries to distract the crowd and partially succeeds -- the guard looking at Stohp takes a glance at Bart and does a double take.

Stohp sighs, and then takes advantage of Bart’s distraction to disappear from sight and slip on the Hat of Disguise. The guard runs up near [b]Stohp[b] then notices the merchant fight. He casts a whisper spell and soon other guards rush out of the front door. Three head out to help. More storm out the front door. Within moments the count is twelve, then fifteen guards -- all watching from a distance.

The original guard runs up to the blacksmith The blacksmith stands over Jacob. The guard stops. “You should stop. Injury to others is looked down upon but if it’s your passion to injure this gentleman I can’t stop you.” The blacksmith stopped and turned. His face was red with anger. “Get out of here… and take all your friends with you. We don’t need extra protection.”
“I’m sorry sir but you do. There is many instances of lack of passion on the Fence. We are assigned as mediators…” Jacob takes the opportunity to attempt a punch but it did little to injure the larger man. The blacksmith fought back pushing Jacob into his bone collection. The product fell everywhere and thieves quickly began to gather up any stray items. The three additional guards stopped them abruptly by shoving them to the ground and collecting the items. They then placed the items in a pile near the now broken merchant cart.

The fighting merchants and the confusion of the Hands in the square lend to the chaos, and Martisan, Bart, and Stohp are all able to make an exit without otherwise attracting any attention.

Soon, the entire party is together again at their home. Now it just remains to decide what to do.

[OOC: DM Cayzle will post a map of Crook Square and the entrances to the Hands HQ very soon -- hopefully tomorrow AM early.]

"K," says Micah, "I think their is sufficient indication that the Hands are up to no good. To me the question is what is the best approach for giving Briselda the opportunity to make a reasoned choice. I contend that while in their thrall, that will be difficult."

He pauses a moment staring thoughtfully at nothing, then continues, "Having said that, I agree with your suggestion with the clarification that giving her a fair chance may not be so easy, given the likelihood of interference from her controllers."

With this he steps aside and takes a seat on the floor, resting his head against a wall watching and waiting for the others to return through partially closed eyes.

K nods, but adds "sufficient indication? Sure. Enough to go to the authorities and report them? No. Enough to kick their doors down and start dispensing justice? No. All we have a is a bad feeling and some strong words from a pit boss. I don't like their message, but that doesn't mean I need to go around making blind accusations."

He leans back in his chair. "I want to see their influence around here cut down, but we gotta be smart about it. First things first, though, and that's Brizzie."

Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14]
Thursday July 21st, 2016 8:19:56 AM

Dorbin speaks up quietly, "Do you think she could be under some kind of magical spell? Would your views of what we can do change if we were to find out that she was under a magical compulsion so that she cannot tell us if she wants to leave them?"

Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11]
Thursday July 21st, 2016 9:55:10 AM

"Well, we are going to be out numbered from what I could see," Bartomus added. His ear's twitched forward and back. "If she is under a spell as well, then this could get even harder for us."

Barthomus looked down at the dagger he had purchased in a rush. It should do, he snickered to himself. He looked about for his pack keeping an ear turned towards the discussion and found his carving tools. He dug a bit more into another bag and pulled out a piece of bone. He returned to group and began carving on the bone as he listened to the conversation.

K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10
Thursday July 21st, 2016 10:29:23 AM

"Oh man, I wish she was under a spell. That would make this so much easier. No, The Hand knows how to twist people's desires to match their own. Good news is that it hasn't even been a full day yet. They probably haven't had time to do much damage."

He looks around. Everyone seems to be here. "Good...all back. I'm going to suggest that Micah and myself actually walk up to the door and try to talk. The rest of you should be nearby, ready to help if they feel violent...speaking of violent, do we have any more of those saps from the Jack Trippers? I made a promise to my mother about not starting a holy war."

Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 23/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 15
Thursday July 21st, 2016 11:47:38 AM

Zander stands listening for a while, weighing in his mind what everyone is saying. Eventually he speaks up, "We have no proof but we know the Hand is up to no good. We have no proof but we know Briselda is in danger. We can't kick in the front door but we must act to rescue her. We go to their warehouse. As a group or with some stationed nearby we talk to them. We ask to see Briselda and arrange a time in the next couple days we can escort her to meet with her father. If need be we stand on their door step till we are given an audience. If they attack the Shields on sight then by Domi I won't start a war but I sure will finish one. I know myself to be a first offender here but if we do this no one so much as touches a weapon unless they swing a blow. If all agree then we should go as soon as possible."

With that Zanderallen looks around at group, looking for assent or disagreement.

Sitting near Micah, her journal open on the floor next to her, Martisan nods at Zander's summary of the situation and his plan moving forward. "That's about the problem right there." She chuckles softly. "But I'm not so sure about this peaceful talk anymore. One of the Hands spotted Stohp when we were scoping things out from a nearby market. The guard immediately drew steel and called for backup."

Martisan shrugs, tucking away her notebook. "I had the same thinking this morning - we should resolve this conflict peacefully - but now I don't know if that's possible. We can try, but I'll be hiding nearby with my weapons ready for the one response we'll probably get from these passionate louts."

Standing and checking her gear, the halfling smiles at her companions. "Bobwise, Dorbin, Bartomus; if you guys wouldn't mind hanging back, we can let the devout of Domi and Flower have their parlay with Caeroldra's cultists, and step in if we need to. If it comes to a fight, as I suspect it will, just watch each others' backs, and holler if you need help. K, and any of you other tall-folk who'd like a nonlethal backup weapon, there should be a few of those masterwork saps stashed around here somewhere, use 'em if you'd like." She pats the whip at her side, indicating her own intention to avoid lethal damage as much as possible.

Before they head out, Martisan gives a brief, rousing recount of the Silver Shield's tussle with the Jack Trippers in a nearby alley, including many subtle cues and reminders to help keep everyone alert for the coming encounter. As her companions are likely coming to recognize, the light touch of magic can be felt floating among the group as the bard speaks.

Stohp returns to the warehouse severely annoyed. Because of the commotion they never got around to visiting the guard, and as far as she can tell they still don't know what the Hand's plans are. During the conversation with the others she mostly sits and stews, listening to everyone else's plans/discussion.

"That plan works well enough but I have one edit; when you approach if the guards rush at you like they did us, stay were you are and let them come to us. They don't strike me as that bright, and if you can lure them away from their HQ we can capture them and maybe get some answers. At the very least it'll give us time before the entire warehouse of cultists pile onto us."

"I am with you K. Before we approach I will cast detect magic just in case," says Micah resolutely.

He grabs his shield, placing it on his back. "I, too, suspect this parlay will quickly erupt into violence, but it must be obvious to anyone in attendance that we were forced to it in self defense." As he says the latter, he straps his hammer on his back; not ready for a fight, but still accessible.

Micah suddenly stops in mid-action. "Wait a minute. You say they drew steel and approached you forcefully unprovoked? Perhaps we should invite such a provocation in the street. If that were to occur, then their true nature becomes much more exposed."

He finishes his stowing, but waits for a reaction from the others.

Bobwise says, "I see the merits of both approaches. Good will prevail.

"Hmm...We don't want to fight them all at once for sure. Not at once. But we need to determine whether combat is justified or not. If we send our two priests forward and they get violent, we have the justification that we need to become violent.

"If we can get out of that initial combat we could wait until they relax their guard again while we decide on a plan of combat and infiltration.

"So what about trying the priests at the front door idea, with us close by ready if necessary, but with the idea of doing our best to NOT fight, but flee. Yes, I know it doesn't feel right. But then we know for sure what we have to do and can plan our assault. Maybe we can not alert the whole place and still get the girl out? The girl is what is important, not our pride.

"I can't believe I said that."

Bobwise grins weakly.

"First thing the fella does when he recognized us." Martisan says with a nod to Micah, before disappearing briefly from the main room. She staggers back in carrying an armful of miscellaneous gear.

"I like your thinking, Bobwise. If we go in seeking peace, and they react violently, we should calm and assess the situation before rushing ahead. A temporary retreat, at that point, might be our best option."

"Here we are!" she says, spilling the items out onto a closed crate. "Grabbed a couple of those saps, and this sword." She holds up the magical rapier to K, an excited glint in her eye, as if just holding the weapon ignited some rare battle lust in her veins. "Figured you put that one to good use," She nods to the rapier at the paladin's waist "So, if we need the edge, it's better to have such in your hands." She holds out a sap in her other hand, sarcastic smile hinting at the meaning in the dual offering.

Turning as if to appraise the other members in the party, she walks over to Bartomus, determined half-smile hanging on her lips. "Between that new dagger and the... club you were hefting before, I'm guessing you plan to get up close as much as anybody else." She holds up her hand, palm up, revealing a small, beautiful ring. "We found it with the last, less honorable, druid to call this warehouse home - it'll help deflect some of the blows that er... larger targets tend to draw, if you don't mind my saying." She gives the minotaur a broad hafling grin, messy curls bouncing too perfectly on her brow.

She spins once more to take in their company, motions to the remaining little pile of equipment, and taps the recently pocketed potions on her belt with a smile. "Let's go sort out these cultists & bring a lost girl back to her father!"

I Once Had A Girl, Or Should I Say, She Once Had Me (DM Cayzle)

Micah contemplates their options. He believes the Hands are up to no good but giving Briselda a fair chance maybe difficult. He then waits for the others.

K wants to be careful. His concern is about Brizzie. K seems frustrated a bit. He then suggests approaching the Hands Headquarters armed with non-lethal saps.

Dorbin wonders if Brizie is under some sort of spell. Speaking of which, he has a very nice Sleep spell to use ...

Bartomus recals the large number of guards exiting the Hands HQ and tells the party about it. He comments that a spell cast upon Brizzie would make things a bit harder.

Zanderallen agrees they have to proof of anything. He agrees that something needs to be done and they could approach the warehouse for a non-violent confrontation.

Martisan listens and recalls that the guard was alerted and armed when they saw Stohp. She offered her support to the plan and advises that there are saps available.

Stohp returns annoyed because of the commotion. She suggests they wait for the guards to approach if they are attacked.
Micah agrees with K’s idea and casts detect magic. There is no expectation of any easy way to approach this issue. He offers that they possibly provoke something to get the guards to leave. And he digs up some gear for the group to put to good use.

Bobwise emphasizes that the priority is the girl, not a fight ... even if that means they have to suffer some indignity.

After comparing notes, Bart and Stohp are able to sketch out a decent map of Crook Street, the alley that leads to Crook Square, the vendor stands in the square, and the Hands of Love headquarters and chapel. Your map, on a five foot scale, is here:

While you are looking over the map, there is a knock on the door. A local crafter named Emily, someone you vaguely know from the neighborhood, has come to remind you that Mask Day is coming soon. Bartomus kept carving and listening. The plan seemed to make sense, he thought. His carving blade took some concentration and suddently, Martisan was offering him a ring. He looked up and replayed the conversation he had heard but hadn't really understood. Then he smiled and nodded.

"Any help that you have, I could use." He slipped the ring onto one of his fingers. "Thank you. Glad to be a part of this effort."

Bartomus go up and slipped the carving tools and the bone work back into his bag. He gathered his glaive, slipped on the padded armor tunic, and cinched the straps on the wide leather belt. He checked his sling and bullets.

He followed the others as they left the warehouse realizing that things were about to change from just carving trinkets.

"If that's the case, is the law so lax down here on The Fence level that we can't report them for assault?"

OOC: If any of you have knowledge, local ranks, I suggest you roll them to answer my above question.

K does indeed grab a sap, just in case.

He's ready to go when he hears the knocking. He doesn't have a mask, so he's fine with wearing one of hers (completely failing to realize the benefit to her (sense motive: 7)). "Thanks, miss. That's very generous of you. These are...a little fancy for my taste, but I'd be glad to wear one."

He's trying hard not to seem eager to get her moving on her way so they can get to Crook Street.

Stohp shakes her head. "We got out of sight before they got close enough to start a brawl so even if we wanted to we'd have nothing to report.

I had actually planned to visit the guards but we didn't make it over there. They may not care about the Fence level much, but the Hands are moving upwards. They're already taking over the gambling dens on the upper levels and that gives them access to people with authority on the upper floors. I hoped that I could convince the guard of the danger, or at least the illegality, of the Hands activities and secure their aid."

While Stohp is cynical enough to guess the merchants intent if she cared, she's to busy with the matter at hand to bother (sense motive 11). Ignoring her entirely, she gathers her things and prepares to go, once again regretting that none of the masterwork saps are large enough for her to use.

Zanderallen easily sees through the reasons behind Emily offering her masks, and appreciates her initiative in being the first to so offer. Looking through the masks he finds one he likes and says with a grin, "It's very generous of you to give us these to wear. Won't be bad for your business either. Thank you."

Turning back to more serious matters he finishes preparing his gear. Moving his sword back on his belt to make room for a sap. "As much as I would like to bash some heads the idea of a fighting retreat to gauge their intent seems like a good one. If the are bent on fighting with us then that may be what we have to do. You raise a good point K, however my experience growing up in the Fence tells me the guard won't raise a finger unless the Hand starts messing up shipments at the docks or killing people in the streets. And the Fence citizens who are paying for this warehouse and our meals are supporting us as an adventuring group to keep the Fence safer. If we have to tackle the Hand head on we'd have the support of many of the citizens I believe. Let's go see if they're open to talking."

As soon as everyone is ready Zander heads out to the Hands warehouse.

Mask Day, thinks Micah. Add to that a change of clothes and hidden weapons and we have a way to close with the wary Hands, Once Emily leaves he will voice this to the others.

To her he says, These are truly a gracious gift, Emily. Would you will willing to sell me a few beyond your complementary offer? I would hate to limit myself to just one. Having extras could make for a ready disguise change, at least to make it easier to get lost in a crowd.

He expresses his agreement with Zanderallen's statement, "If our mere presence provokes a fight, then our moral standing will be made clear by their actions. Should we be able to arrange to have Brisselda witness such a response to a peaceful appeal on her behalf, she may be more likely to see through there seduction and depart from them."

As others prepare to depart the skilled smith draws some cord and spends some time devising a means of attaching his hammer to his back that allows him to pull it into readiness without taking much time. What he devises will fall apart upon the first draw and would not sustain prolonged travel or action, but will enable him to carry it close to the Hands without being provocative while maintaining its accessibility.

Intently poring over Stohp and Bartomus' map, Martisan starts in surprise at the knock on their door, fearing the passionate Hands of Love might have followed them back to cause more trouble. When the door is opened, she smiles at the craftswoman and accepts a mask, choosing the most fearsome looking one she can find with the most green in it. "Of course we'll need masks for the celebration, thank you." she says, similarly preoccupied with the Hands, with little room to wonder why the woman would offer them the masks (Sense Motive 11). "Please excuse us, though, as we were just about to leave on official Silver Shield business."

While the group readies themselves to confront the Hands, Martisan taps her chin thoughtfully, as Emily's offer does bring something else to mind. "Actually, running from the Hands now could also put us in a worse position later. We know they're actively recruiting and increasing their presence on the Fence, and the word around the Float is that they have something 'big' planned for Mask Day - it might be best to bring these cultists down a peg or two before they reveal the big surprise and fill their barracks with more misguided youngsters."

Martisan shrugs and shakes her head at the delicate situation. "The original plan is a good one - approach peacefully, fight if we have to, and run if there's no easy way through to Briselda - but the situation's growing urgency is something to bear in mind as well."

She follows Zanderallen out, and casts Message (20min Duration) on Stohp and Zander as the group moves off Crook Street into the area outside the Hands' warehouse. "Stay in communication." is her only whispered message, stealing quietly through the marketplace to watch the peaceful approach from a nearby vantage, weapons undrawn.

We Can Work it Out- (DM Mstitt)

Bartomus puts his blade away after they agree on a method. He accepts his gift and gets dressed.
The young woman smiles and giggles. “Why yes,” she said and pulls out a beautifully crafted mask with a four legged creature painted upon it. It’s a black creature with a long face and eyes set on the sides of its head. Behind the creature is a beautiful pasture.
“I call this Black Beauty,” She says.
Dorbin reasons the back door may have less guards. The woman offers a mask to Dorbin. It is a multi-colored stripes falling diagonally from the left top to the bottom right.
K is upset that the guards attacked seemingly unprovoked. The woman offers K a mask with a serenely painted lake scene.
Stohp tells K they had planned to visit the guards but didn’t get too. She is concerned over the influence of the Hands in the Fence level. Stohp seems preoccupied and avoids the gift of the mask. (OOC: Not sure you meant to ignore her)
Zanderallen takes his mask. It is split in two with blue paint on the left and white on the right. He then finishes preparing his gear. He agrees with K’s assessment with a correction.
Micah is grateful and asks for a couple extra. Emily smiles but advises Micah she needs to remaining masks for other people. She hands Micah a light blue mask. “This is my most special mask,” she says. “It is a representation of the blue sky.”
He agrees with Zanderallen and states that Brizzie may be turned off by the aggression.
While waiting he builds a sheath on his back for his hammer.

Noon passes in the eternally dull light of the Fence. The merchant fight is long over. Jacob nurses a black eye. He stares at the blacksmith occasionally while picking up the mess left of his cart. Hearing them in your words will help me decide which one I'd like to wear. And give you your usual prices please as it will help me judge which one would be the best for me."

He continues to try and sense her motives and perceive clues about her presence here.

After escorting her outside to talk to her further he excuses himself for a moment promising to be right back and heads inside.

"Comrades, Mask Day complicates things greatly. You know how much every thief and criminal plans operations near Mask Day. Before the party leaves the Silver Shield HQ, there is a little more conversation with Mask-crafter Emily. She points out that each mask you have been given has a tiny silver shield worked into the design somewhere. You note that her work is really quite exceptional for the Fence. These are masks you might see for sale on the Merchant level, or maybe even the Gold Level -- especially the blue one she gave Micah.

Bobwise asks about the trends this year. “Word on the street is that geographies are especially lucky,” Emily says. “The thought is that all of them blend in together to form a landscape. Other designs will stand out in the crowd.” She does not mention her prices, maybe embarrassed, maybe because she is hoping her prices will go up if you heroes are known to have selected her work.

[OOC: Wearing your masks out and about BEFORE Mask Day is unusual. It suggests either fear (that you will be selected to serve the Underlord for 20 years) or braggadocio (because you are especially proud of your mask). Please confirm that you are wearing your mask if you are.]

K and Micah step forward to approach the front door of the Hands of Love building. Micah detects magic as he advances. There are a few weak to middling auras in the crowd, likely people carrying magic items, but since folk are moving around, it is hard to pinpoint auras exactly. The two guards at the door of the Hands HQ do not have any magic effects or items in place.

Dorbin and Martisan sneak behind them, actually entering the square and keeping line of sight to K and Micah. They rely on the people in the square for cover.

After hearing the reports from the others about the guards previous reactions, Micah is surprised that he and K make it to the door without confrontation. Upon doing so, he silently prays, Thank you, Domi,.

Since this is K's mission, he waits for him to speak first, ready to assist him in any attempts at negotiating with these two. While waiting, he will concentrate on the guards, looking for signs of magic.

Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 13 (11+2)]  d20+3=5 ;

Bartomus smiled behind the mask, "thank you, I was really fortunate to be lent it by Emily in advance of the festival." He was glad that he could help, and quickly lifted various things up of the ground and looked over at where the guard was. He piled the items on Jacob's table, his eyes still scanning about the crowd. He turned back and looked over the items trying to find something that was nice looking, but that would not put Jacob even further behind in his profits.

Tuesday July 26th, 2016 8:08:00 AM

Dorbin looks down at his mask, gently tied to a string on his robes. He longs to put it on, but after looking around at the crowd, realizes that if he does instead of blending in, he will stand out even more. He continues to browse the wares, hoping that none of the vendors will actually talk to him.

He visibly relaxes when he sees there is not an immediate combat started when Micah and K reach the entrance. He still remains ready, simply because he does not know Micah and K very well, and he's not sure if they're actually going to start a fight now. He ensures he is in range to cast his sleep spell, hoping that it will be effective because he's really only used it on rats before.

K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10
Tuesday July 26th, 2016 8:55:55 AM

K is not wearing his mask, nor is he making any attempt to hide the symbol of Flower etched into his armor.

He keeps his words concise. "My friend and I are looking for Sister Catherine, Brother Cole, and Brother Michael. I had words with them yesterday, and I don't think they reflected well on my goddess. I'd like to apologize personally to them.

"We'd also like to have a quick word with Briselda. Shouldn't take more than a moment."

He refuses any invitation to come inside. "No thanks. I'll wait out here," is all he'll say.

Bobwise agrees to take a mask, but offers to pay or if she feels awkward about that, donate so a cause she cares about. He turns to Dorbin and whispers. "Dorbin, by wearing that on your hip, you have just announced to everyone who you are on Mask Day. No one should know. Or at least that's what most folk think."

He makes sure he is out of site of the door reacting to what Dorbin and Martisan do rather than risk being seen. He trusts them to stealth better than he can and to decide if and when any reaction is necessary.

He would really like one of those sausage rolls from the vendor, perhaps after, if things go well. He makes a silent thought to the wind hoping that the girl is safe and that they can help her.

As K and Micah leave his line of sight, Zander counts the seconds till they should reach the door. Counting a few extra in case the crowd was denser he realizes with a shock they must have reached the door unchallenged. Having been resisting the urge to have his hand resting on his hilt the whole time he relaxes a little, now listening for any outburst or reaction from his more perceptive allies knowing K and Micah must be delivering their speech at this time.

(OOC: Zander stowed his mask in a safe spot in his room before heading out.)

In the warehouse, Martisan notices the offered masks' excellent craftsmanship only after a closer examination (Perception 12), and she grins broadly at Emily when she sees the silver shield worked into the design. "These are wonderful, thank you!" She says, offering fifteen gold to the woman in what seems to be fair payment (Appraise untrained 9). Smiling to herself, Martisan pauses in her efforts to tie the mask to her belt, listening to Bobwise's word of caution to Dorbin. She also leaves her mask in the Silver Shield HQ for now, stashed somewhere safe.

Martisan's eyes widen slightly in surprise when K and Micah are greeted nicely by the Caeroldra guards. She looks around the square for any more Hands of Love, while keeping an eye on her friends at danger's doorstep (Perception 27; are either of these the same guards as before, that she can tell?). "Looks like they're actually playing nice now." she whispers back to Stohp and Zander, while pretending to busy herself shopping and hiding behind the bustle of the square (Bluff untrained 7, Stealth 27). "Stay sharp and keep close, but this might go smoother than we expected."

Current Events at the Chapel / Center / Fence-level Headquarters of the Hands of Love --

Bartomus takes his time and looks over the items that Jacob offers. The man has an idea. “No wait, none of those will do. Is there an interest in the Hands of Love Chapel over there? I don’t want to be rude, so please pardon my intrusion.” Jacob seems to have pieced together the fact that two of the Silver Shields have grouped around the front door of the Hands’ warehouse fifty feet in front of him -- and Bart is one of them. “Your group is building a good reputation around here. I am prepared to give you two gifts. First, the side door of the warehouse is often locked, but there are no guards. You will need a key. Second, Please take this gift” Jacob hands Bartomus a bone key. “This key will open that back door. Such wonderful generosity. Thank you for your kindness.” Jacob smiles. He is missing a tooth and his mouth is a bit bloody.

Micah watches with surprise as the guards welcome himself and K. He waits for K to confirm.

K proudly wears the symbol of Flower. The guards look at him and seem to be thinking. The first guard, his face sculpted and good looking, steps forward. “Brother of Flower,” he begins then pauses. “I am not familiar with these names you put forward. I hope you understand this is a barracks of Caerolda. We stay here. There are dozens of followers within the walls. I would have to fetch the registry. You can join me if you would like?”

Zanderallen waits as K and Micah leave his sight. He relaxes, assuming the pair has not been accosted.

Stohp spys on the group at the entrance to the Hands’ Center. She watches as guards come and go from the building. She sends a message to Martisan asking for information.

Martisan is surprised at the guards’ friendly reaction. She notices the guards at the door are not the ones from before -- they change at a regular intervals, maybe. These guards evidently have not heard or seen the Silver Shield.

Bobwise smells the sausage, while his friend Dorbin gets ready to use his sleep magic if it is needed.

"Jacob, truly you are both observant and too kind. Thank you, thank you very much," Bartomus gave the merchant a bow. Bartomus reached into his tunic and pulled out gold piece and handed it to Jacob. "Hopefully, this will at least buy you a good meal after all of this. Truly thank you."

Bartomus turned and made a circular route using the passing of people to wander about the area and eventually finding his way across from the side door. He looked about and tried to find one of his new colleagues. He could wait a bit, he thought to himself, but if none of his colleagues were about...

Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14]

Dorbin keeps watching the front door and is almost surprised when Bobwise speaks to him. He turns to Bobwise and says, "Well of course I know that, silly! But," he gestures around the area with shoppers and stalls and continues, "do you think any of these people know who I am? Do you really think they're going to look at the mask today and then later say, 'Oh, hey, that was that guy who was here the other day. You know him, that guy that was wearing dirty robes.' Yeah, I doubt anyone here knows who I am nor cares in the least."

When he realizes he was lecturing his friend, he stops and his face grows a little red for a moment. He says, "I'm sorry, really I am. I'm just so excited about, well, being a part of whatever we're a part of here. Do you think we'll rescue the girl? Do you think she's pretty?"

He watches the two at the door standing around in conversation. When he spots Bart moving across the area and towards the back door, he hesitates. He looks back up at those at the door and then back where Bart moved into the alley. He says to Bobwise, "The plan was to go in the front. I don't want to leave those two, but should Bart being going off by himself?"

Lurking in the marketplace near Dorbin, Martisan touches the wizard's elbow when he asks about Bartomus wandering off on his own, and nods toward Stohp following the other minotaur.

As she watches the exchange at the front door, she wishes she had cast her Message spell on Micah or K, to keep them appraised of the action going on behind them. "They're not hostile, thank Flower, but I don't know if the guards are going to cooperate with our ambassadors in the front." She whispers so that Dorbin can hear along with Stohp and Zander. "If there's something new with that side door, let us know so we can change plans if need be."

[OOC: Just fyi, per Cayzle's map, Stohp & Bartomus, as large creatures, will need to squeeze through part of the alley to get to the side door. It slims down to 5ft squares before opening back up to a 10ft+ area in front of the door. Also, the doorway itself is 5ft, opposed to the 10ft front door, so an entrance there would require the minotaurs to squeeze into the building as well.]

Dorbin watches the front door. Bobwise surprises him with the comment. He lectures his friend then stops with an explanation that he is just excited. He then spots Stohp also sees Bartomus and is curious. He wonders if he should join Bart and Stohp.

Bobwise bows and thanks the woman. He asks for an autograph and Emily blushes. Bobwise listens intently to his friend Dorbin. He nods at Martisan and asks if she can see anything.

After several long moments of waiting the guard returns with a priest. The priest steps forward and introduces himself as the High Priest Six. “I hear you are looking for a couple children of Caeroldra? I’m so sorry,” he begins. “They are all out and about on various missions throughout the Float. I’m sure they would love to meet some friends. He lowered his hand trying to keep the pass off of the key out of sight and between the two Minotaurs.

If he's not able to, or if he doesn't find any evil, he continues talking.

"Father Six, I've got to say, you're not what I expected. To hear others talk of you, you're some kind of brainwashing mastermind. To be fair, The Hand does have a reputation of breaking the will of others...not sure if that's justified or not if we're being honest.

"I think the Silver Shields and you folks may have gotten off on the wrong foot. I don't agree with all of your philosophy, but there has to be enough common ground between Caeroldra and Flower to let us both do our thing down here."

He pauses a moment before finishing. "Briselda's father asked us to help reunite them. As a paladin of Flower, that's not something I can refuse. I'm sure you can appreciate that. I'll be back later to talk to her, and to apologize to the brothers and sister that I was rude to. You have my word as a paladin that I'll respect Brizzie's decision," he looks to Micah, "and that my companions will do the same."

He continued his adolescent bemoaning of his sorry state until he worked his way back to Crooked Street.

Bobwise leaves his spot towards the vender's stall moving near to Martisan and whispers. "How old is this girl? Is she young enough that we can demand she returns home to her parents? Or is she old enough to not be under her parent's authority?"

Seeing Dorbin shifting positions to see something better, he follows suit.

He asks the vendor, "What do you recommend today, good sir.

Bobwise, perhaps due to the smell of the food, focuses well and sees the guard moving toward Bartimus and Stohp. He touches Dorbin's arm and barely nods in that direction.

K does not sense evil in Father Six or the door guard who stays near him. Six laughs when K says he has a reputaion for breaking the wills of others. "My son, all we break are the chains that imprison minds and souls. We encourage freedom -- everybody should be free to follow the paths that they are excited to explore."

K declares his intentions toward Briselda and the other followers of Caeroldra he feels he may have slighted. Father Six concurs that he has no wish to be at odds with followers of Flower, and suggests that the party return this evening to see if the girl wants to speak with the Shields.

During this conversation, Micah scans for magic and does note several items worn by Father Six are magical. One is more powerfully magic.

Dorbin, Bobwise, and Martisan keep inconspicuous but alert. Dorbin and Bobwise pretend to shop. Dorbin sees that the original door guard still standing near seems protective of Father Six. He may have an action readied to intervene if the Father is attacked.

[OOC: Bobwise, you rolled a 22, but in your post you did not way what that roll was for! Please mention why you are rolling as well as what you get in the body of your post.]

Bobwise asks Martisan for some background info on the girl, Briselda, or Brizzie as she is known. The girl is now 16 -- old enough to make decisions, maybe, but perhaps not wise enough to make good ones? A few years ago her mother died, and Brizzie promised to take care of her father. She could not stop his slide into drink and depression, or the loss of his business. Brizzie gave up on her dad, an alchemist, and joined a band of Caeroldra that has been working as peacekeepers on the Fence and at the Octopus's Gardens. Recently, the party helped the alchemist, and he has started to turn his life around. He's asked the party to help bring his daughter home.

The other door guard heads over toward the "confrontation." Martisan uses her message magic to alert the Silver Shields as to what is happening.

As that guard approaches, Bartomus makes a retreat out of the square and toward the street.

Stohp is long gone, and changes her appearance. Still, there are not too many minotaurs on the Float, so there is only so much one can do to be completely inconspicuous ...

Zander listens as the guard arrives. The armed follower of Caeroldra starts asking people nearby about what was going on. He hears that it was a lovers' spat between two minotaurs. "Typical," the guard murmurs.

Where to next? Is our immediate business here at the Caeroldra Community Center all done? What's the next priority?

As Micah and K walk away from the door, and the others behind the alley disperse to avoid raising the guard's suspicion, Martisan slips into the marketplace to do some final investigations. Pulling out her little potted plant, she inquires about the Hands of Love and Caeroldra's followers in general, browsing the wares and happily talking to both shoppers & shopkeepers. Overall, how do people feel about the Hands here? Has anybody heard any rumors? Seen anything odd, or caught them doing any particularly good acts? Martisan no longer bothers to hide her presence, seeing that the Hands don't present an immediate danger.

Dorbin watches the others and shrugs to Bobwise. He says, "I guess we go back to the lair now." He looks at his hands and idly wonders, just for a moment, about casting the sleep spell he had prepared on random people in the marketplace, then puts his hands in his pockets and heads out of the marketplace.

Seeing Dorbin looking a little down Zander steps alongside him and reassures him, "Don't worry friend, the Shields don't give up so easily. You'll get your time to shine." Even as he reassures Dorbin he has a sinking feeling himself as they failed to accomplish what they set out to do. He heads back to the warehouse to wait for evening and plan their next move. "Trying again this evening is probably our best bet. If we get rebuffed we could try the side door or Mask day is also coming up. The large crowds may give us the ability to talk to Briselda without the Hand knowing. Or if we talk to her beforehand and she wants to leave the Hand but is being held it would also give us cover to sneak her out of their grasp, as an alternative to busted in the front door if we want to avoid a blood bath."

K thanks Six for his time, shakes his hand, and agrees to come back this evening.

He doesn't engage anyone but Micah on the way back to the warehouse. He's not thrilled about the rest of the Shields being all cloak-and-dagger when it seems like they can fix this whole problem by bringing everything out in the open.

"Well...that went better than expected, I think. Let's come back tonight and hope we're not attacked on sight. I didn't sense a bit of evil in Father Six. Everytime we take an action, this whole situation gets murkier. I'm starting to think there's not going to be some bad guy we can just fight at the top of all this. Gotta say...all those adventure books I read growing up didn't prepare me for this kind of work."

Bobwise (Jerry)
Monday August 1st, 2016 11:49:16 AM

Bobwise shrugs and returns to the warehouse with the others. Once everyone is home and the conversations begin, he asks, "Is 16 considered to be an adult in the Big Float? Does her father have parental rights over her at 16? Can he hire us to make her come home? Against her will?"

He thinks a bit.

"What is our evidence that they are holding her against her will so far? We need some sort of powerful reason to justify breaking into the place."

"Her dad asked us to kidnap her. We refused. What I've learned since then has given me zero reason to think she's held against her will. She wants to be there." He sighs. "I can't sit by and let anyone plan on being sneaky about this. She has all the information she needs. I'll ask her if she wants to come see her father tonight. If she says no, she says no, and we move on."

Stohp follows the other's back, dropping her disguise. She spends the trip deep in thought, reviewing everything they've done and heard. After listening to the other's thoughts and trying to see all sides of the issue she leans forward to speak to the group as a whole.

"Something isn't adding up here. Everyone we've talked to says that the Hands are bad news. We've all heard about Hands' cults converting people by force and causing trouble wherever they show up. The first time we met any of them was after the fight with the Jack Trippers and the Hands seemed disappointed nobody died. Shredds has hinted at them muscling in and taking over the Turtle races for sinister purposes. This morning when one of their guards just noticed me he yelled and charged at me sword drawn.

"On the other hand we've found no proof they've forcibly converted anyone. Micah and K were treated respectfully and not threatened in any way. Despite everyone telling us they're bad news no one has actually given us solid information on what terrible things they're supposedly up to. It's easy to think it's all a misunderstanding and they're just a benign, growing religion.

"My guess on all of this is that we're actually interacting with two subsets of the Hands. Some of them are probably benign, intent on helping people discover their passion and improve themselves through it. Another group is either up to something sinister, or letting their passions drive them to extremes such as attacking us on sight. The question we have to answer is if the second group is a danger to people and if they're really plotting something while using their more benign brothers as cover."

Finished with her summation she leans back and sighs. "As long as we're interacting with the more benign faction we should be fine getting Brizzie out to talk to her dad. We can't stop there though; at this point I feel like we're responsible for more then just talking to Brizzie and trying to convince her to see her dad again. If we pull that off and drop the matter and someone dies because of either sinister plans or overly-passionate idiots we'll be kicking ourselves for not looking into it more."

[OOC: No post from Bart? Oh well ...]

Martisan’s little magic plant invites a lot of attention and commentary. “That’s the oddest thing I’ve seen since I saw that one-eye prophet fellow,” one shopper says. “I wonder what he would say about that? I hear he’s said some awful wise things!”

Martisan’s specific inquiries about the Hands of Love get some interesting stories. Yes, they do seem to want to do well, but they sure are wishy washy.

“Once they yelled at shoppers for being too loud. Another time they hired minstrels and threw an even louder party for everybody,” says one shopper. Another person complains about their fairness. “They knocked Judy around pretty bad when they caught her with her hand in a fruit vendor’s till. She was bloody and unconscious when they were through with her. On the other hand, they were sweet to that orphan boy who stole a dagger from Jacob last week, and yelled at Jacob about letting the boy follow his passion when he complained about it. They even let the scamp keep the dagger, but I think they gave Jacob some silver for it in the end.”

Dorbin, himself not long away from his own scamp days, is tempted to Sleep the locals just for lulz ... but thinks the better of it!

Zanderallen tells Dorbin that he’ll have a chance soon enough! The paladin ponders how to approach the situation without doing the wrong thing.

Micah asks around the market too for Briselda. He hears that a young lady matching her description is held in high regard as a kind soul, though innocent. She’s said to hand out food to the local ragamuffins. The person who relates this story shakes his head in disbelief. “For free!” he adds.

K leads the Silver Shields back home. He did not expect hero work to be so filled with greys. It’s not the black and white of the bards’ songs.

Bobwise agrees -- it is not a situation to go in with magic blazing and swords drawn, he opines. K agrees.

Stohp offers some deeper thought, and wonders about who and what the factions are at work here. Who are the bad guys, anyway? The matter goes beyond the issue of the girl, she thinks.

It is mid-afternoon, and you have been invited to return in the evening to meet with the followers of Caeroldra you mentioned to Father Six.

Monday August 1st, 2016 9:48:44 PM

Bartomus followed along, trying to keep up with his new companions having been distracted by watching the folk pass in and out of the market. He follows back into the Warehouse and listens to Stohp.

"So, would using the key to let some of our smaller and more able members slip in the side door and scout about while others talk with Father Six?"

Micah (John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13

On the way back alone with K.
"I agree, says Micah, "I am seeing or hearing nothing that is consistent with our previous reports. Nonetheless, I am not willing to discount those reports either. Perhaps when we come back as you suggest things might be cleared up." With that, he accompanies K back to the warehouse, quietly thoughtful.

Back at the warehouse.
When Stohp makes her suggestion he stands and starts pacing as he speaks, "Stohp, that makes the most sense. Two different factions. The question is, if that is so, which faction rules." He stops and faces the others. "I suggest K and I return as requested. If that works, and we get to speak to Briselda, then we have more indication that benign forces rule. But," Micah pauses briefly before continuing, "should we be attacked, the others should be ready with the key at the side door for a flanking action. Martisan can link us with her message spell."

"I hope that such an action is unnecessary, but I think prudence suggests we should at least be ready for the worst."

[OOC: Micah was specifically gathering information about Briselda having been seen leaving the building and not returning. That was never addressed in the post. This post is predicated upon the absence of any clear indication that Six had lied to is.]

Cayzle Comments: Sorry, oh yeah. Well it is clear that the Caeroldra Center is as much a bunkhouse as anything ... there are a lot more people there at night, and in the daytime they go out and about on whatever business they have. Begging in airports, guarding roaming gambling dens, handing out literature, stuff like that! :-)

Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14]
Tuesday August 2nd, 2016 8:02:29 AM

Dorbin listens to the others and says, "It sounds like we really need to talk to this girl alone, without guards. It also sounds like the guards are not going to let her do that. If they have her under their control, she is not going to allow that, either. So are we willing to openly do something against her will to find out if it truly is her will?"

The normally quiet and reserved Dorbin continues, not sure if anyone is listening to him, "It is quite the classic case of greyness. It is similar to the old myth of King Loom and the leprechaun. If we take her by force and she really has made a decision of her own free will, then we have committed an evil act by forcing her to come with us. But, if we take her by force and find out that she was actually being held against her will, then we will have done good. So far, we have no way of knowing what her will is, and we really have no way of finding out. In the old myth, King Loom took his target by force and she was unhappy all the rest of her days. I would hate that we should do the same, but how else are we to actually find out what her choice would be? How else can we get to speak with her without her guards around? I wonder if someone could sneak in and find her when she was asleep, or if the guards are close even then."

K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10
Tuesday August 2nd, 2016 9:41:34 AM

"Stohp makes a good point. The Hand is a large, Wold-wide organization. Thinking that a group of folks that big who believe in following their own selfish passions are all working on the same page is pretty far-fetched."

K shakes his head at mentions of extricating Brizzie. "I gave my word that I'd respect her decision. If that decision is to live in fear of The Hand, then I respect it. In the mean time, I won't be a part of breaking into people's homes because some pit boss is worried about The Hand cutting into his business. The Hand is cultish...cultish folks make other folks nervous. We aren't going to be part of a witch hunt."

"Micah, I think us Taurs need to be with the party at the gate. We can't fit through easily the side door passage and we would stick out again if we were there, unless we come up with some additional ruse." Bartomus looked at Stohp and winked. "Is there anyway we could get the girl to tell us the truth regardless? Answer our questions truthfully and such?"

Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 23/23 AC: 19 T: 11 FF: 18 CMD: 15Party Treasury
Tuesday August 2nd, 2016 2:01:24 PM

"That's a keen insight Stohp. I bet you are right. And if so that leads to additional problems. I care not for their teachings or actions but it might for the best if we work with the more benign faction of the Hand to curb the less benign faction. If they even see a problem."

Zander listens to he points the others make, smiling at Dorbin's story, and then speaks, "We have nothing definite, we go tonight as Micah proposes and see what is said. As of yet we can do no more."

Zander stews on K's statement of letting Briselda live in fear of the Hand if that be her decision but says nothing on the issue for now. He has taken a liking to his fellow paladin and would rather not butt heads for no reason. But he knows that he will not be content with leaving the Hand to dominate free will through fear or intimidation if it comes down to it.

Bartomus suggests the party of taurs approach the gate due to their size. He wonders if Brizzie would be truthful.
Micah talks to K and notices that the Hand seems to be different than their reputation but Micah is still suspicious of the group. Back at the warehouse he agrees with Stohp that there may be two different factions involved. He adds that talking to Brizzie may help clear up this confusion. He also adds a bit a strategy in regards to the side door hoping they don’t have to fight but ready if needed.

Dorbin states that they really need to talk to Brizzie alone but that may be difficult. He is a bit concerned that the team doesn’t force the issue and unintentionally cause the young Brizzie pain but what are the choices they have? Do they separate her from the guards or ambush her while she sleeps?
K also agrees with Stohp and believes that the group likely has a couple factions. He is not so much of a fan of extracting Brizzie or even breaking into her home.
Zanderallen suggests they work with the Hands to figure out which is benign, if that would even work. He is not a fan of K’s suggestion but waits to see what may happen.
Stohp notes the time and suggests they eat.
Bobwise asks if they go through the front door but bows to the majority opinion.

The evening approaches as you prepare to leave the warehouse. Outside the doors you hear several loud explosions. After several tense moments a cheer erupts then a couple more explosions. As you rush outside you see the next explosion. It’s a burst of color reflecting off the support beams above your head. A mortar fires from near the Hands compound and another burst of color. The people outside your warehouse are initially frightened but begin to gather and watch. It seems to be a strange but relatively safe and the atmosphere around the warehouse is jovial. Everyone seems to be huddled together in groups of people that they know. Across the way, you can see the Hands headquarter is buzzing with activity. There are many more people scattered in similar groups in front of the building. Are you planning to intercept Brizzie before she gets home? How would you like to start your search for Brizzie? Split up or just start yelling her name?

"Huh...would have been nice to warn The Fence about this, but it's pretty."

K and Micah were asked to return to The Hand's base this evening, so that's what he plans on doing. Surely Father Six didn't forget about this shameless display.

He's content to walk right up to the guards, announce he's here to see Briselda & the brothers/sister he insulted, and see what happens.

He's not at all a fan of having a large entourage when he does so. It looks like the taurs in the party can join the rest of the gawkers in the square without breathing down his neck.

"Hmm. Surely the Hands' have had this planned for some time. Thus, we can expect that most will be back from their duties to enjoy the festivities. I propose we leave immediately to meet with Brisselda and to give K his opportunity for apologies," says Micah as he starts to gather his things to depart.

"Should the Hands' truly mean ill, the diversion perhaps will empower them to act and reveal themselves. If they do not, then our chances of meeting with whom we desire to are much higher at this time.

"I suggest K and I advance alone as before, with the others covering the side. Stohp and Bartomus, you can stay near the front or make use of our wand to reduce yourselves so as to be able to also be near the side entrance. Martisan, dear,"
he says jovially, "If everyone agrees on this course, would you be so kind to set us up with your message spell on us?"

"I apologize for being brusque, but with everyone likely to be out in the streets, we may have our best chance to talk to Brisselda as long as it lasts."

Staying silent he heads out with the others to talk to the Hand again, staying back out of sight of the front door as before.

Martisan, quiet through the discussion as she ponders the others' thoughts on the situation, nods and smiles up at Micah when he suggests she use her Message spell again. "Certainly!" she says while following the others outside, messing with her clothing in a poor attempt to disguise herself as a little human girl (Bluff untrained disguise 4). She watches the fireworks for a moment with wide eyes, apparently satisfied after seeing no obvious signs of danger from the explosive festivities.

"This little spectacle could also provide a good distraction to cover any covert actions." She adds with a wink to Micah. "Stohp, before we get to the Hands' warehouse, you think you could give me a hand with this disguise? The magic headband's yours, of course, but I think I could use a trained eye over here." She motions to her makeshift disguise, which makes her look like a halfling trying to look like a human child.

"I'm going to use the cover of darkness and the distraction of the light show to sneak around the side." Martisan advises her companions, before beginning a cautionary tale about a good-natured goblin that got into trouble after following his pyrotechnic passions. Stohp isn't as alarmed as others when the explosions start; she's heard of those things before (knowledge: Engineering? 11). "Those are fireworks. Basically they're just pretty lights and harmless bangs. They're benign but can be dangerous if you're careless with them. Sadly 'careless' describes the Hands pretty well, they could easily set fire to the float with those things, especially with the size of fireworks they're using."

She follows the group to the bazaar and loses herself in the crowd (stealth 12). Worried about the dangers of fireworks, she take special note to find the launchers/people firing them and seeing how reckless they're being.

With a light-hearted chuckle, Martisan fetches the wand from the Silver Shield's stash in the warehouse. "Unless you know the spell yourself, in this case how to shrink folks, it's best to avoid messing with magic wands and such." She says with a smile to Bartomus as she hands the wand to Dorbin. "One thing I learned from our last wizard... we'll see if these layabouts are just as sharp."

She gives Dorbin and his smaller friend a sly smile before facing the (slightly) larger wizard squarely "You watch me and watch those Minotaurs!" She says, suddenly stern as an officer to a patrolman. "Don't go playing with your cat with this and lose it in the street someplace." Martisan looks Dorbin straight in the eye for about two seconds before she turns sharply on her heel to hide a big grin and follow Micah out the door.

K is content to walk right up to the guards and announce his intentions. He would prefer that the rest of the group stay behind.
Dorbin looks for a place to hide but waits for the others.
Bartomus marveled at the colorful display. He suggests they head out to see if they can speak with Brizzie. He also mentions using the key late at night. He then adds that he would be game to shrink and maybe add a distraction if it comes to that.
Micah suspects the Hands had planned this celebration. He proposes they leave. He suggests K and him move alone with the others covering.
Zanderallen watching the explosions but wonders about the logic of exploding them below the ceiling. He heads out with the others.
Martisan listens and ponders. She tries to disguise herself doesn’t do a good job. She watches the fireworks and agrees that it could give them cover. She then asks Stohp for help with the disguise. She decides to use the cover of darkness and the fireworks to help her sneak around the side. She then disappears into a crowd of people.
Stohp Explains the logic behind fireworks then tries to hide within the crowd.
Martisan fetches the shrinking wand and hands it to Dorbin. She smiles and asks the wizards to watch the Minotaurs. She warns Dorbin about losing the cat then turns to head out the door.

As you move through the crowd you can see Hands of Love clerics mingling with other residents of the Fence. The Caeroldra guards are also out in force watching over the crowd.

It appears we have company, whispers Micah to Martisan via the spell, The Caeroldra guards seem to be following us.

When the guard accosts Micah, he carefully looks around suspecting a set up. He is rewarded by seeing someone who might be Briselda. "K, over this way," he says to his companion. "That could be Briselda, but given the attention we are getting from the guards, we may be in for it, with these words he heads in that direction, carefully scanning for trouble. As he makes his way to what he hopes is his objective he whispers to Martisan That might be Briselda. We're heading that way.

Wednesday August 3rd, 2016 11:51:55 PM

Just as Bobwise is about to sit and get comfortable in the Warehouse, the group talks for a sec and turns back around and out the door. He pats the comfy couch once and follows.

As they enter the area from before, he falls back mingling with the crowds, but keeping the others in sight. He tries to spot as many Hands as he can.

He mutters to Stohp, "I have a bad feeling about this."

Dorbin watches K walk out into the exploding streets without a pause. He stares for a moment as Micah, Zander and the others quickly follow him. As Dorbin is about to follow, Martisan speaks to him about the wand. He takes the wand in hand carefully, holding it as if it truly is special. He thinks, “They must really trust me now to give me a powerful item like this from their lair.” He blinks again and tries to pay attention as Martisan lectures him about his cat. He looks down at Emily and ponders using the wand on her and putting her in his pocket. Then he quickly looks up as she continues telling him NOT to use it on his cat. He quickly follows her out the door, hiding the wand in his flowing, too-large robes. Emily the cat jumps onto a crate and follows along.

As they travel towards the appointed spot, Dorbin thinks about the wand. He hopes he doesn’t mess things up as the “new guy” in the group. He looks at the taurs and hopes that it is clear when they want him to use the wand. Then he wonders about the sleep spell he has prepared. He wonders if holding the wand in his hand will make the sleep spell work better, or not at all. He wonders if it will be easier to put some guards to sleep if they are smaller. He is thinking about so many things, he almost bumps into Martisan when Micah has to stop when confronting the guard.

Dorbin hears the guard talk about someone named Shredd, then watches him run away. He thinks that is a rather odd way for a guard to behave when Micah quickly heads off talking about spotting Briselda. He hurries to keep up, excited to finally meet the person they have been seeking.

K's unusually perceptive tonight. Must be the adrenaline. He notes he's being followed, but isn't too concerned. He has a job to do, and doubts The Hand is going to jump them in public during a festival like this.

Besides, he's confident he can hold his own should the need arise.

Hearing Micah's located Brizzie, he starts moving in that direction. He easily side-steps a guard who jumps in front of them (acrobatics: 22), hopefully pulling Micah along with him.

He'll make sure that really is Brizzie before he starts talking. Also, is the cleric with her one of the 3 from before?

Bartomus followed at a distance Micah and K. The crowds were excited and that excitement seemed to be even greater with the fireworks display. As he walked through the crowds, he had a sense that something just wasn't right. He looked about and caught a glimpse of one of the Guards, and then it seemed another was following along as well.

"Stohp, heads up seems we may have attracted attention." He nodded in the direction behind him. As he did so, he stumbled into one of the Caeroldra guards that had been on an intercept course with him. "Shredds is looking for you," the guard said and then spun about and started running towards the Hand's headquarters. Bartomus thinks for a moment and then gives chase, keeping up with the guard.

"Hey, hey who is Shredds and why is he looking for me?" Bartomus asked as he kept pace with the guard. [b]"Hey, stop and tell me who Shredds is and why he is wanting to talk to me."

Bartomus extended his arm and tried to grab the guard's shoulder.

Noticing the guards following them and a girl who looks like Brizelda standing with some others (Perception 19 and 22 with Martisan's careful teamwork) he moves quickly towards her, sidestepping the guard with unexpected ease (acrobatics 14). Noticing Bart run off he yells after him, "Bart over here, stick together.", a little nervous as they are being encircled. He tries to keep close to Dorbin and Bobwise in the crowd and pull them through with him.

Looking around after hearing Micah's warning about the guards following them, Martisan quietly passes the message on to the others. "The guards and priests seem like they could be the two different factions you were talking about." She says softly to the group. "Looks like the priests are in charge, but with as much freedom to pursue their 'passions' as they give the guards, that could be the cause of the trouble from the Hands."

Martisan avoids the guard that stumbles into their path (Acrobatics 14), and uses the resulting small commotion to move ahead through the darkness (Stealth 18), ready to draw her whip in case there's any trouble. She shadows the others, not quite moving with the group, while keeping her eye on Briselda and the Hands of Love.

[OOC: Rod, I figure we'd have briefed you on some of this IC, so just fyi - Shredds (also referred to as the Turtlebrook) is the bookie that runs the Octopus Gardens, a magical gambling den that moves around the Float. Shredds asked us to 'remove' the Hands of Love's Security Commissioner, Six, to stop the Hands from continuing their takeover of the Octopus Gardens. We found all that out like a week or two before you joined. We found the Gardens on Gold Level, I think, & met with Shredds, initially to find Brizzie & help remove an old man's gambling debt, and then Shredds asked us to take Six out of the picture, so we came to the Hands' warehouse on the Fence looking for Six & Brizzie (and maybe some answers & a morally unambiguous encounter for once! Stohp looks over Martisan's attempt at disguising herself. It isn't very good, but Stohp is polite enough not to say so. "A good disguise is about attitude as much as the disguise itself. You have to act like the person or thing you're pretending to be and not break character. I'll give you pointers some time, but for now I think we should all go as ourselves to show a united front to the Hands. Besides with the crowds and noise around the fireworks you should be able to sneak around well enough without a disguise."

Stohp notes the following guards (perception 11) and avoids being bumped by the other guy who runs away (acrobatics 12). Frowning, she agree's with Bobwise' assessment. Smart man, part of the group less then a day and already expecting the worse. Two paranoids are better then one after all. She explains to him and Dorbin if he's close enough who Shredds is.

"Shreds is the Turtle-book. He is in charge of gambling and debts at a place called the turtle races. He requested we find some way to... remove one of his underlings because said underling has become more loyal to the Hands than to Shreds. We're not sure how dangerous/influential the guy is, and he seemed not to care if we got the guy arrested or killed him in a fight as long as he was no longer a problem. We actually met the guy earlier, he was the priest Micah and K talked to, calls himself Six."

Seeing Bart rush after the guy Stohp follows a little ways behind. She isn't chasing them so much as trying to keep close enough to watch for trouble. If she gets to close he might panic and run faster, so she hangs back for now.

The guard steps into Micah first shouting at him and drawing attention. “Shredds is looking for you. He then began to shout and run away from the group. Micah suspects a set up but he sees the woman that looks to be Brizzie. He directs the others toward her figure as she steps away from the fleeing guard. You can see that the guards are closing in upon the group. You should be able to speak to Brizzie for a few moments before her fellow cultists arrive.

Bobwise gets semi-comfortable when the group stands again and heads out the door. He tries to look for members of the Hands but his Perception doesn’t seem too good. He has a very bad feeling that something is wrong. After the tussle with the guard the group splits up. (OOC: Unsure what HOL is?) Your sense is really telling you that something is going on and it doesn’t look good.

Dorbin steps onto the street and listens to Martisan talk about the wand. He takes the wand and is starting to feel a bit welcomed by the others. Dorbin contemplates using the wand on his cat but stops when Martisan tells him not too. Emily, the cat is happy to follow along. He worries a bit about messing things up with his new friends when the guards steps toward the group.

K also notices the cleric standing with Brizzie -- and she is the one from before. The woman notices K and begins to look a bit nervous. She whispers something to the woman that looks like Brizzie and she turns. K, Micah, Zanderallen recognize Brizzie. Brizzie doesn’t see you. You are close enough to approach and speak with her.

Bartomus follows at a distance. The crowd is excited but he senses something wrong. He warns Stohp of the guards approaching until he stumbles into one of them. He hears the other guard shout about Shredds. Only the one guard runs leaving Bartomus to stumble and unable to chase but the guard on the ground is happy to answer your question.
“Get off me, you beast,” groaned the guard as he squeezed past you and onto his feet. “He is not looking for you, he is looking for the Silver Shield. They are unpassionate fools that fail to keep their word.” He does a double take. “And… You should really watch where you are going?” The guard seems to be unsure about you due to you not being a part of the team at the meeting with Shredds.

Zanderallen is on high alert. He sees the guards and Brizzie. He moves towards her missing the guard. He watches as Bart attempts to run after the guard and yells at him. He tries his best to walk with the others. He too is now close enough to approach and speak to Brizzie in the moments before the other cultists arrive.

Martisan notices the guards and sees the difference between the factions. She avoids the guard and moves ahead quietly, stealthily.

Stohp is not particularly happy about the explanation given by the man apparently working for Shredds. They've talked to the guy once, did he expect them to murder him in his sleep or arrest him on sight? She also notes, however, that the man called them "unpassionate fools" and tries to catch a look at his outfit - is he Hands of Love (perception 17)? If so, Shredds wasn't exactly honest with them and has connections with the Hands. Perhaps rather than trying to expel an evil cult Shredds is merely trying to eliminate competition for control of the Hands.

Speculation. She dismisses the thought for further follow up and turns her attention back to the discussion the others are having, and the guards encircling.

Under Pressure- Part 2 - (DM Mstitt)
Friday August 5th, 2016 9:41:12 PM

Bartomus feins confusion and politely leaves. He then heads over the the others and learns about the history of events leading up to this.
Dorbin bends over to pet his cat and inconspicuously watches as the guards begin to tighten up. There are many but you also notice the second set of guards beginning to question what’s going on.
Martisan sneaks around but the light from the fireworks exposes her. K continues to talk to Brizzie and her companions.
Stohp is not happy with the response from the guard. She does notice the patch upon his shoulder is different than the others. She deduces that Shredds may have further plans for the Hands of Love.
K puts on a friendly face and speaks to Catherine. He apologizes for his actions.
Catherine tries to hide a growl. She is indifferent without any diplomacy.
Brizzie smiles broadly. “Oh, you guys are great. Thanks for looking out for me.”
“I don’t think they are looking out for you dear,” Catherine says. “The unpassionate actions of others have sent them after you. They may be passionate about finding you but you will find nothing but dissatisfaction with your family. You belong with the Goddess Caeroldra.”
Micah notes its likely a bad time for a serious discussion. He asks if Brizzie wants to speak to her father. To answer, Brizzie twists her hair a bit. Sister Catherine can see the hesitation and become more uncomfortable. “This is getting highly inappropriate. Brizzie, we are leaving now.” Sister Catherine give Brizzie a stern look. Micah suggests perhaps Sister Catherine would meet her father?
“I would not…”
Zanderallen suggests bring her father to the celebration.
Brizzie turns to Sister Catherine then back. “Did you say, he missed me?”
“After mother died he was such a sow of a man. This is my father and I respect him,” she began to tear up.” Catherine is furious. So much so that she is shaking.

Stohp sees the conversation going sideways and steps in (diplomacy 19). "Sister Catherine you speak of passion and claim Brizzie will not find it at home, but I believe you are missing something. Familial love and passion are not separate, distinct things. By keeping her from home you are denying Brizzie and her father the right to discover and follow their passions.

I believe the last time you saw your father he was distraught over your mother's death, yet recently he has turned things around. Recent events have reminded him of his love for you, and rekindled his drive, his passion be be a good father. We have dogged in trying to reconnect the two of you, but that is only because of how passionate a plea we heard when Rielbel begged us to find you. I do not deny he does not approve of the Hands, yet his passion and love are what drive him to try to bring her home. Go home to him, see for yourself how much he loves you and how determined he is to reconnect with you. Convince him yourself that you are happy with the Hands, tell him about the loaves of bread you have handed out and the good you have done with them.

Passion and love are not mutually exclusive emotions Sister. Perhaps, working together, a priest of passion and a paladin can love can find a way to keep this family together while both father and daughter can pursue that which they are passionate about."

Stohp is incredibly annoyed by her party-mates reaction. Well mostly K's response; while K may not agree with Stohp's method, trying to drag them off like foolish children just undermines her effort. Shrugging him off, she stands her ground and waits to see what Brissie and Sister Catherine do.

Not wanting to present a divided front to Brizzie or the Hands, Martisan simply ducks under K's arms and pats the paladin's hip consolingly. "You say your father isn't 'passionate' enough," She says to Briselda, her eye-roll and sarcastic tone showing how much stock she puts in this Sister Catherine's opinions, "But when was the last time you spoke with him? When we saw him last, the passion he felt for you was evident - we wouldn't be here were it not."

Martisan shrugs as she looks around the square (Perception 16). "K here's right, of course, you're welcome to follow other's passions, if that's what you want." Martisan nods toward Sister Catherine, indicating her and the Hands of Love in general. "But it's better to make your own decisions and your own mistakes following your own passions, instead of what others tell you is the 'passionate' path or the way to true love or whatever nonsense these folks are preaching."

[Diplomacy 13 enough to give Zander another +2.]

Explosion - (DM Mstitt)
Monday August 8th, 2016 9:15:17 PM

Stohp sees the conversation going badly. She tries to reason with Catherine and it seems too of worked because a tear falls from the heavily made-up face. She steps back allowing Brizzie room to make a decision.
Bart listens till one of the Shredd’s guards takes down one of the other Caeroldra guards. The poor, young man falls to the ground and doesn’t move. The guard then moves to the next and strikes him. This starts a couple chaotic events. One being a mob that begins to flee from the growing battle and second a full out battle between Shredd’s guards and Caeroldra’s guards.
Zanderallen addresses Brizzie. The words sank and tore at her heart. “Sister Cat, I need to check on my father. I will be back. I promise… please don’t be mad.”
Catherine returned little. A couple more tears fell from her right eye. “You cannot trust the man. Father’s are not to be trusted…” Her voice rose but she suddenly stopped. “I cannot stop you from following your heart, if it aches.”
Micah brings up the scarf. Stating that it was a token of her father’s love.
K is worried they are overwhelming the girl and turns to leave. He attempts to collect the others that approached. Stohp shrugs off K’s attempt to corral her.
Perspective vs. DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: { There are several battles behind you. The Caeroldra guards all have non-lethal weapons but manage to hold off Shredd’s crooked crew. The problem is if they fail it’s a bloody mistake. You cannot move back to the warehouse without battling through.}
Martisan ducks under K’s hands and pats the paladin. She reminds Brizzie about her father’s passion for his daughter and reminds her to follow her own passions.
Bart avoids K’s attempt to collect him with questions.
Dorbin watches, with interest, as he picks up Emily. He sneaks around stealthy.

Catherine was touched by the speeches. How could she not be. Brizzie stepped forward toward the Silver Shield. Catherine screamed, her anger boiling over. All the wrongs simmers and spilt over. Brizzie stepped away as the cleric fell to the ground and sobbed.
Brizzie looked on shocked as she watched Sister Catherine become unravelled.
Brizzie never saw the Caeroldra guard that swept her up and ran with her over his shoulder. The guard pushed through the Hands of Love clerics and headed toward the side of the Hands of Love building. He is near the corner of the building before anyone can react.

Micah is moved by Catherine's reaction. Before he can find a way to comfort her, he is interrupted by the guard's outrageous kidnapping.

Righteous anger swells within him at the outrage against Briselda. Calling upon the power given to him and focusing his will upon the fleeing miscreant, he shouts, "FALL!" Before knowing the effectiveness of the spell, he starts running toward Briselda, preparing to defend her from another attempt.

Bobwise watches the speeches with great interest, but he's distracted because he's still trying to keep tabs on all the Hands of Love in the square (Perception 14). This is fortunate as he quickly notes the growing battle and is able to warn his fellows.

"Trouble!" he calls, just as the guard snatches Brizzie and carries her off. His first instinct is to start casting at the trouble makers, but he's unsure what the rest of the Shields will do and doesn't want to make a mistake so he waits.

Bartomus saw the fight around hI'm and decided that chasing the rogue guard and Brizzie. He bellowed, stop! he charged after the pair, posing his way through the crowd.

Dorbin drops Emily, knowing that she will be able to make her way through the crowd easier than him. Seeing the others take off after the girl, Dorbin joins in the chase.

K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10

K stares daggers at Stohp. "This," he hisses, "is why we don't cause a scene when surrounded by The Hand."

He then gives chase after Brizzie.

Watching the area around them devolve into a battlefield, Martisan grits her teeth and draws her whip (move action after Perception 28). "We gotta get outta here soon. Things are going bad - I don't like this trouble on the Fence, but these two groups are starting a war in the streets that I'm not sure we can win." She whispers to her companions.

Distracted by the growing fight, Martisan barely pays any mind to Sister Catherine's breakdown. "We'll bring her back to you, Sister, if that's what she wants..." she starts to say, moving to guide Briselda away, when the young girl is suddenly snatched up. As Micah uses the power of Domi to try and halt the kidnapper, and the others give chase, Martisan casts Expeditious Retreat (standard action; +30 movement speed for 50ft total). "This is no time for the waterworks, Sister!" She hisses at the sobbing priestess, "Get yourself together and get somewhere safe. We'll look after Brizzie."

[OOC: If we're round-by-round, that's my actions, if not, Martisan will use her 50ft movement to get within 15ft of the kidnapper (whip range). 2 L1 spells remaining for the day.]

Stohp is a bit surprised at Sister Catherine's response. The possibility of her having some daddy issues of her own occurs, but before Stohp can think it through she sees the starting battle (perception 16). When the guard comes and snatches away Brizzie she's startled, but as he runs to the base she guesses he's trying to get her to safety. Then her party mates try to stop him, K blames Stohp for the fight starting, and the battle starts for real with civilians running away and swords clashing everywhere.

Growling in exasperation, she follows after the rest of the party even though she doubts Brizzie has anything to do with what's going on now. If this is a power-play by Shredds the affairs of a girl are probably only important insofar as he knows they care about her and he can use her to manipulate them. Still it'd rather ruin her the tirade about supporting your party mates she intends to give later if she fails to support them in their current actions even if she disagrees.

Reunion Tour (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday August 10th, 2016 12:01:14 AM

Sister Catherine sobs and Martisan kindly promise to return Brizzie. Martisan is pushed partially out of the way when the guard grabs Brizzie.

Micah is moved as Catherine falls and sobs. Anger swells immediately as the guard grabs Brizzie. Micah’s attempt to Fell the guard barely fails with a (Will Save of 14).

Bartomus and Dorbin chase the guard but he had stumbled into a large armored Minotaur before you could catch him.

Zander follows, drawing his sap.

K is furious and follows but the chase stops abruptly.

Stohp is surprised. The Fence is chaotic and K seems angry at everyone. Stohp follows the others. Her thoughts on Shredds is confirmed when she sees him in all his polished grandier.

Martisan has whip ready and sees the Minotaur step out from behind a wagon. It is indeed Shredds himself! The big fellow wears full plate armor and looks like he is ready for war. He sticks out even here on Crook Street of the Fence Level!

Casting Expeditious Retreat helps and you get close enough to frighten the guard causing him to trip over his feet. He stumbles barely able to keep a hold of Brizzie’s hand. Shredds the Minotaur steps in front of the guard. The guard stops and then Brizzie bumps into him and then falls down. She gets to her feet. The guard collects himself, grabs Brizzie’s hand and waits.

“Well...well what do we have here?” Shredds says with a huge smile. He tells the guard to enter a nearby door with Brizzie and to lock it. The guard steps behind the minotaur and enters the side door.

“Looks like you didn’t feel like keeping your end of the bargain. For one, Ole One-Eye’s fate has been sealed, and, second, seems like I’m going to have to turn this into a life lesson.”
Two pairs of rogues dressed in what looked like black pajamas stepped calmly onto the map from the sides. They flipped acrobatically in a show of skill until they flanked Shredds on both sides.

(OOC: Take 500xp for End of Scene, but please do not level yet. The next scene starts with combat next round, and a combat map will be posted very shortly. Please wait for that map to make your post.)

Bobwise isn't entirely sure who the giant Minotaur is at first. From the parties reactions however, and the taur's comments he manages to connect the dots. Gulping, he prepares himself for a tough fight.
