The group awakens with plenty of time for morning routines and a good bite to eat. Soon after they head out to the pavilion. When they arrive at the pavilion along with the other seven teamsthat will be competing, the Mayor gives each of the group leaders a ten-sided bronze nugget.

"Ok everyone, listen up. This is the first part of the scavenger hunt." There will not be a list of items so-to-speak, but each correctly collected item will give you a clue about what your next task is and what the next item is, and some idea where you might come across it. Once you've gathered up all four items, you must bring the items back here to the finish line and the judges, where they will check over your items to see if you have accomplished your goal and decide whether or not you receive full or partial points for the competition. All right then, I expect there are perhaps a few quick questions."

He looks around to see which group or groups have questions that need to be answered.

Hazel raises his hand:

"Can I use my mount?"

Murphy Bumblebee Leafwin Pipewood (Kim) Aside to Hin Billy
Monday July 15th, 2013 2:28:16 PM

Murphy listened to everyone describe their mix of talents and resources. He gave the last handful of almonds to Flimsipold.

At the pavilion, Murphy makes inquiries as to the names of all the teams, and the names of the group leaders.

Since he the group name to the registrar, Murphy takes the bronze decahedron and hands it off to the group for everyone to see. But, as the have not really discussed among themselves the question, he asks his friends, "Who do we want to assign the task of group leader for this game? I'm willing, but if someone else wants the job or thinks another should do it, that's fine with me."

During the question and answer time, Murphy says, "So, Mister Mayor, are we to understand that you'll be giving us some sort of hint to start with, then we'll pick up more clues as we carry on?

"Are there boundaries on what people can and cannot do in the game? All may be fair in love and war, some say, but in a game there'll be things that ain't necessarily so."

"I say you, Murphy, no one better for it." - Hazel answers with a friendly smile

Flimsipold "Hin Billy" Williewhim AC: 15/13/13 HP: 10/10 (C. Neagu)
Monday July 15th, 2013 2:58:52 PM

Flimsipold treated both Murphy and Odo's attempts at cheering him up with begrudging grunts, taking his place somewhere to the side of the group for once. Injected eyes, and reeking of alcohol, truly Flimsipold seemed unlike his usual self this morning, a pathetic bundle of pieces that only barely made an individual.

Flimsipold carries his longsword, bow and quiver, as well as his mandolin.

Alouryn Buttercup Bumblebottom AC: 14/14/11 HP: 8/8 (Vaughn)
Monday July 15th, 2013 4:28:12 PM

Alouryn patiently waits for Murphy to do all the talking for the group and tries to figure out who Cora is.

Odo Barfoot HP: 11/11, AC: 19/16/14 (Matthew)
Monday July 15th, 2013 6:56:10 PM

"You seem as fair a choice to lead as any, Murphy." Odo nods at Hazel's suggestion. Otherwise though he remains somewhat quiet as he listens for questions and the mayor's responses.

He has all of his equipment with him.

Monday July 15th, 2013 7:48:24 PM

"Murphy does seem to fit the role in this sort of adventure. Lead the way." Eral nods to Murphy. Noticing Alouryn's confusion over Cora he introduces her. "All, This is Cora, She and her Husband, Eldon, Treated us that were at the Belly Buster to dinner and drinks last night. Eldon had to leave for a caravan trip but he should be back to see us win the competition."

Shel Breezelee Kromnite (Gerald)
Monday July 15th, 2013 7:55:35 PM

Shel nods at Murphy's suggestion that he take the lead as the head of the squad. "You'll do a good job I'm sure, Murphy."

She thinks for a few seconds and poses a question to the Mayor. "Are there multiple copies of the items? Finishing less than first after the first clue would seem to eliminate all those groups," she pondered, as she worked out in her head the fact that there had to be extras there.

Edric Lowbrook

"My vote is with Murphy."

Edric turns to the judge. "Are the items different for each team, or are all teams looking for identical items?"

Zylo Runefaust HP:9/9 AC:17/15/13
Tuesday July 16th, 2013 12:41:57 AM

During the private discussion in regards to everyone's talents Zylo adds in, "I'm pretty stealthy when I need to be and I'm good enough with my rapier to know which end goes in the victim. My real talent though is acquiring things that aren't mine."

When the group gets to the pavilion, Zylo falls to the back of the group and listens intently to the mayor's announcements and the audiences questions.

ooc: Sorry for late post. My Mamaw was sent to the hospital this morning so been up there all day.

Murphy Bumblebee Leafwin Pipewood (Kim) - Introducing Cora
Tuesday July 16th, 2013 2:31:11 AM

Murphy takes Alouryn over to Cora TossCobble. "Missus TossCobble, this is Alouryn Buttercup Bumblebottom. She serves in the Temple of Flower."

Turning to Alouryn, she says, "This is Cora TossCobble, wife to Eldon TossCobble - you likely have seen him about town, effecting repairs here and there, fixing barns - he just helped our family with our well pump a short time ago. He ALSO was a champion at these very games, years ago.

"Well, last night, good Cora agreed to be our official cheerleader - to root us on as we go about the games. So," and he takes off the teal ribbon Alouryn had given him, "this beautiful ribbon you made for our team, we want her to have one, too - if that is all right with you!" Unless Alouryn indicates it is not all right, he hands Cora the ribbon, and gives a polite bow to Missus TossCobble.

He makes sure the rest of the team know she is their official team supporter, and introduces everyone around.

Murphy also asks Hazel if he could cut Faoil's ribbon in half, lengthwise, so that he and the dog will each have a ribbon.

DM Kent
Tuesday July 16th, 2013 8:26:52 AM

The eight teams are:

BadApples (Humbles Ford)
Humble Swords (Humbles Ford)
The Waterbugs (Angel Springs)
The baron's Best (Angel Springs)
The Forest Walkers (Culverwood)
The Hovel Hunters (Hovel)
The Buddy's Fall Fellows (Hovel)
Scalzo's Fury (Plateau City)

Ahh yes very good questions all.

Yes there are boundaries within the game that you can not cross. As he lists these he appears to be looking around at the members of the BadApples, but that could just be your imagination.

* There is to be no cheating.
* While you may try and interfere with another team, you may not do so in a way that permanently harms them.
* You may not take an item from another team if they have possession of it.
* And you may not manufacture an item that you have seen but do not have.

Ok, No you will not need your mounts.

Yes there are multiples of the items to be found but not enough for everyone, so you will need to really search or it wouldn't be a competition.

The items you each team must collect are identical and must be exactly as presented.

And yes, I am going to give you the clue to the first part of this hunt. That said he takes a dramatic pause and a deep breath and begins to speak again, only this time in verse.

So what should you do?
Where should you look?
Not flying for sure,
Nor in a book.

You're not digging for diamonds.
You're digging for gold.
You're not digging for silver
That's shiny and cold.

You'll dig all day and
You'll dig all night.
You're not digging for rubies
All sparkling and bright.

You plan to get famous.
You plan to get rich,
By digging up sand
3 feet down in a pit.

You'll play in the sand box
To the pit you are bound.

That which you search for
May not be easily found.

And yet, from these pits
Dug three feet down,
You're digging for gold
That is ten-sided, not round.

All will be marked on
But not by prose.
Each to be signed by
A bright purple rose.

GO!!!!!!!

Knowledge Local DC 12 Highlight to display spoiler: { You note that several phrses in the riddle are overly emphasized by the mayor}

Shel Breezelee Kromnite (Gerald)
Tuesday July 16th, 2013 9:00:09 AM

Shel waits until the group is outside of earshot of the others. "Okay, this will be a bit harder than I originally expected. Any ideas what that means? My only guess is that the digging in the ground could be at the Farms in the northeast section of the village. Gold could have more than one meaning...it might be a code for tasty vegetables..."

Odo Barfoot HP: 11/11, AC: 19/16/14 (Matthew)
Tuesday July 16th, 2013 9:10:19 AM

Quickly glancing around to make sure the other teams can't hear him, Odo conveys his first thought to the rest of the team.

"Sounds like the graveyard to me- Digging for things which aren't gold or silver, and I reckon a coffin could have ten sides if it was the right shape. Graves are marked on too, and since the graveyard is at the Flower Temple I suppose the bit about roses might make sense..." He scratches his head, thinking about it for a moment. "Anyone else have any ideas?"

Flimsipold shrugged at Shel. "What kind of vegetables grow three feet in the ground and have purple roses for leaves?" He then coughed nervously, trying not to look Odo in the eye after his awkwardly repulsive plan of daylight grave robbing. "It said it's valuable, found in the sand, and marked by purple roses. It's not a ruby, and that's about the same color as a rose." Flimsipold nodded once more. "Gotta be an amethyst, right?"

I assume it's local knowledge for anyone who might be digging for gems around town, but otherwise, I have the same modifier to all knowledge skills anyway.

Hazel takes the ribbon from Faoil, and gives it to Murphy.

"Sorry friend" - he says to his dog - "You will need to sit this one out. Stay with her!"

We tells Cora TossCobble is she is so kind to watch for his dog, even as he knows Faoil will be doing the watch.

"Team, over here! Let's get away from the other teams, we are not supposed to hurt them, but no need to help them either." - He chuckles

Once they are out of hearshot he begins:

"Any ideas?"

Hazel tries to remember something about "pits" and "ten sided golden" things... even if he doesn't seems to come out with anything...

"You mean, 'Let the Games Begin!'?" Murphy asks when 'GO!' is shouted.

He comes aside with his friends.

"I know there's sand along the river, more so in some places than others. There's some by the swimming hole upstream, but downstream you can find river sand too. I don't recall any sand pits in the gardens, other than some sand mixed with other soil here and there for plants that like it. I know there are sand pits somewhere -- why in the Wold can't I remember where? " [Upstream is in the lower left of the map, to the west, and downstream in the lower right, to the east, if my memory of the flow of the river is accurate -- can a DM verify or correct?]

Positioning his body to shield the view from other teams, he says, "What we're looking for is going to be a gold version of this." He holds up the small 10-sided bronze nugget that was given out by Mayor BumbleLuck to each of the team leaders. "I don't yet know what the purple rose mark is about, but we'll have to figure that out along the way." He glances at the nugget, turning it about to see if there are any markings on it, then repockets it.

"Someone keep an eye out on which way the different groups go," Murphy counsels.

"As soon as I get done talking to everyone, you three go the direction of the main group of the BadApples," he asks Odo, Alouryn, and Eral. "I want you to know what the rest of us are doing before you leave, so wait until I say 'Go.'"

"We need shovels. We have a shovel and spade at home, we can get a crowbar and a few garden tools, a small wagon. Let's ask Cora, too, if she has one or more we can borrow, since Eldon is a handyman. Do others have shovels, or something to dig with? Also, sand slides back. A few boards could be of use. If you can think of anything else we can use, maybe Pirnook Deeppockets at the general store may have something we could buy.

Murphy dashes over to talk quietly with Cora. "Do you and Eldon have any shovels, spades, hand trowels, maybe a crowbar, or a post-hole digger? And a wheelbarrow? If so, can someone go with you to borrow them? Also - do you know where there might be some big areas of sand? Sand boxes? Sandy pits?"

If she affirms that we can borrow some digging instruments, Murphy asks her to join the group, and says, "Edric, Zylo - when I give the signal go with Cora. Put whatever she lends you in a wheelbarrow, if she has one, or hand carry what you can otherwise." If she knows where there are some sandy pits, he passes that on to the group, and directs them there.

As he has been talking the past several minutes, Murphy pulled from a pouch a small round lozenge with a curled wire attached to the base, which in turn runs to a bracelet. He placed the bracelet on his left wrist, then threaded the wire on which the lozenge is up his sleeve, then out the opening at the neck of his red shirt. The lozenge he then puts in his left ear.

"Hazel - can you come with me? We'll go to my place to pick up something to dig with." If he sees friends or family along the way, he makes quick inquiries as to the location of sandy pits, sand boxes, large areas of sand as he and Hazel gather the tools mentioned.

"Shel and Flim - can you stay here, and collect information? Shel -- you'll be our rally person and information center, until we find where to dig. Then we'll all go there. Flim - roam around this area, but try to stay in sight of Shel, in case either she or you need help. Gather what info you can. You sure you don't have an idea where we might go? Shel - eyes and ears out, too.

"If anyone finds a good place to dig - at least one stay there to stake out an area and get started, and someone else come back to here to let the rest of us know. If you don't know where to go within 15 minutes, meet back here and we'll decide what to do next - unless you get word otherwise by other means."

"Ready? If any want to trade places with another person on assignment, do so now. Any questions?" If so, he will address them. "Any spells for now? Cast 'em."

He quietly says, 'monitor' as his middle finger lightly touches the lozenge in his left ear, and dark glasses appear over his eyes. He includes all of his friends, and Cora, in the scope of a message spell. "I can whisper, and you'll hear me if we are within 110 feet of each other, for a while."

Then, he says, "GO!"

[Flimsipold - With your roll of 16 on knowledge, local, you should be able to highlight the two Knowledge Local DC 12 and 15 messages to see what is written there, and tell us! With that info, we can go straight to the right place.] If Flimsipold does so, the 'follow BadApples' group of Odo, Alouryn, and Eral, plus Shel and Flimsipold are to go to the spot, the rest of us to gather tools, then meet there.

Murphy Bumblebee Leafwin Pipewood (Kim) - A Sieve!
Wednesday July 17th, 2013 1:44:54 AM

"A sieve, a sieve!" Murphy whispers via message to Cora, Edric and Zylo, also Flim and Shel. "If Eldon has a sieve for sorting big things from smaller - a frame and a wire mesh, we can toss shovels full of sand onto the screen, let the sand fall through, and catch stuff that's a bit smaller than our nugget. That way, we don't toss the gold nugget into another pile without realizing it!" He then adds, "If the Tosscobbles don't have one, then buy one at the general store - or rent it, if Pirnook Deeppockets will allow such, and a big blanket or two to cover it so no one knows what we have until we get it to the sand pit area.

"Tell me if you need help."

DM Kent
Wednesday July 17th, 2013 8:33:11 AM

There are many perplexed looks as the Mayor completes his riddle and he looks qite pleased with his results.

Each of the teams moves aside to discuss their strategy where no one else can over hear.

Amongst the Humble Swords, the ideas range from digging up on the farm and looking for vegetables to digging in the graveyard, to looking for amethysts to digging up the childrens' sandboxes. Then as someone asks about something about sand pits, Flimsipold has an "AHA" moment and remembers that there are sand pits for the glassworks up the river a bit out of town. (The river flows from right to left on the map.) Flimispold slao realizes that the mayoe was emphasizing a number of spots during his recitation that make him pretty sure they are supposed to be looking for a 10 sided gold nugget that will be located 3 feet down in a pit of sand.

Murphy sets forth a plan of action to collect shovels, sieves and perhaps a wheelbarrow and some boards, shadow the BadApples, watch the others, etc. and they set off just about the same time that a number of other teams do as well.

The BadApples slpit into two groups one smaller of 3 and the other of 6 The three seem to be heading in the direction the general store while the rest start moving toward the river.

The Waterbugs (Angel Springs), seem to be spending a lot of time discussing things with a couple of local residents but havent. made much of a move as yet.

The Baron's Best (Angel Springs) Head toward the large wagon that brought them and start going through what appears to be a lot of equipmnent. (You see several shovels being offloaded.)

The Forest Walkers (Culverwood) Head North f town heading perhaps for Humble's Farm for some reason.

The Hovel Hunters (Hovel) After a few moments of discussion all head toward the river.

The Buddy's Falls Fellows (Hovel) after a few minutes of confab all head off toward the General store.

Scalzo's Fury (Plateau City) look really confused and are watching what each of the other groups are doing.

*********

Eldon looks up as you address him about the shovels etc. and responds. You all done quite well with that riddle there almost as good as I coulda done in my prime. Shovels.. Yeppers I spect we've got a couple (2) you can borree, gots a barrow as well. Got a few boards too. Don't got no sieve thingy though. That said Edric, Zylo and Cora head off to get those items and to check out the general store.

At the general store you find that now there are a number of teams there and looking to get shovels etc as well, and Deeppockets is dooing a brisk business. The end result is that you can rent 5 shoves/spades and two sieves for 3 gold per day.

Odo, Alouryn, Shel Flimispold, and Eral head out shadowing the BadApples that appear to be heading toward the river. When they reach it they work their way along the shore about 1/4 mile where they come across the Glassworks and a very large pit of sand. Highlight to display spoiler: { the pit is large, about 7700 square feet broken into 10 x 10 gridded areas with a 5x5 center area gridded out inside of each of the larger squares. The BadApples head into the pit and start spreading apart across a corner of the area. (perhaps staking a claim to cetain sections). Moments after you arrive and watch the BadApples, the Hovel Hunters arrive and move to another section of the pit.}

Sand pits map https://drive.google.com/#folders/0B4J2oKls4_y5WHFHUWxIQ1dkaEE

Hazel and Murphy head off to his house to pick up a 2 shovel/spades and a small wagon he is sure he has.

In the end you have Hazel, Murphy, Edric and Zylo with a wheelbarrow, a wagon, 9 shovel/spades, 2 sieves and about 30 feet of miscelaneous boards, meeting back near the pavillion, with the rest of the group 1/4 mile up river at the sand pits.

[OOC: I don't have permission to view the map. Please change permissions so that anyone with the link can see it. Feel free to get rid of this 'OOC' comment once that is fixed]

As Flimsipold recalled the sand pits a bit upriver (to the east, right?), Murphy directs all but the equipment crew to head that direction. Those with the gear then hotfoot it toward the sand pits, too.

Once they arrive at the pits, Murphy looks to see what Odo, Alouryn and Eral have done so far. He joins in with his friends to stake out a minimum of three, but as many as nine adjacent 10'x10' squares. Everyone is assigned a shovel. If we can claim a 30'x30' continguous section (so three squares by three squares), we'll set up the digging in a diagonal pattern, as in an upper left to lower right corner win in tic-tac-toe. "Shall we go with four per hole, the sieves in the corner towards the center, and a spotter on the sieves?"

Grid
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9

"Team 1, take square 1. Team 2, divide - each dig a little in square 5 and square 9, then focus on square 9. I'll be on team 2. Pick a team - no more than four on a team. Set up sieves, get digging."

Murphy grabs a shovel and starts digging into #9 (if someone can see the map, let us know which actual square this would be on the map grid).

"Has anyone seen Murphy Drinkwater today? How is she dressed?"

OOC: I can't see the map either.

"Sorry, guys, helping with the shoveling isn't my strong suit. I can be a spotter, for sure, though. I really wish, we'd have been digging in the gardens, though. Finding a tasty turnip along with our trinket would have been the best!" Shel looked around at the progress the other teams were making as the Swords set the gear up.

After picking up the supplies at the general store and volunteering to pay for the 3 gp/day, Zylo goes with the others and eventually gets directing down to the Glassworks. When he arrives he picks up a shovel and starts digging in team 1 as directed by Murphy.

I think it would only be polite to have to women folk on the sieves to be spot'n.

"I'm sorry myself fellers, but I can't really do the digeroo with hands what play the mandolin." Flimsipold's nose twitched. "Why not get the dog to dig for us? Dogs like digging."

Murphy Bumblebee Leafwin Pipewood (Kim)  d20+1=19 ;
Wednesday July 17th, 2013 8:54:01 PM

"Sure, Hazel," he returns in a whisper. "If you see an imprint of a rose on the sand before you start digging, let us know. I think that the gold will be signed by the purple rose after we get it out of one of these holes." He holds the shovel to the side of his face for a moment as he continues his thoughts. "I think it may be Mulberry. 'Mulberry' is a shade of purple. And who is more like a rose?"

Quietly, this time shielding his mouth with the side of his hand to preclude lip reading, he answers very quietly, "Shel - Was Mulberry around the pavilion? If so, how was she dressed? What color? Any emblems on her clothes, or special jewelry?" Murphy asks her quietly after she asks about the purple rose. He. "But, sure, go ahead and take a quick jaunt around, see what you can see! Let us know how the other teams are doing, too." He resumes digging, tossing each shovel full on to the sieve. He suggests two dig, one rest (perhaps minding the sieve), then rotate around, so each one has two stints of work, one stint of rest.

Assuming squares on map are each 10'x10' (if not, let us know, and stretch dimensions claimed proportionately):
G6 H6 I6 - Team 1 digs G6
G7 H7 I7 - Team 2 dug a little from H7
G8 H8 I8 - Team 2 digs I8

Murphy places his 50' of rope so it demarcates from halfway down the left side of g6, then along the left of g7, left and bottom of g8, bottom of g8, and halfway along the bottom of i8. "Someone else have a rope? Mark off our claim along (and he points out top of h6 and i6, and right sides of i6, i7, i8)."

"Also, we're going to get hot, and we'll need lots of water. Who has water? A rake would be good, too. Could we have one volunteer go back to get more? I have some, but, unless we strike it rich fast, we might need more. Whoever does it can see what, if anything, is happening back in town, too."

Then Flimsipold claims exemption from digging. Murphy rests his elbow on the top of the shovel's handle. "Pretty precious hands, eh?" He considers that. "You look to be strong enough." He turns to Alouryn. "I don't suppose that if Flim did some real work, you might be able to help heal up any blisters he might get before he suffers too much?"

He doesn't wait for an answer, but tosses the shovel toward the bard in a slight arc so that he either needs to catch it, or get smacked across the chest by the side of the handle.

Hit AC 19, not going for damage - just tossing it in a way that Flim should be able easily to catch it (unless he rolls really poorly).

"Get to work - it's a good cure for some things." Murphy goes to grab up one of the unused shovels, and resumes work.

Shel takes off her waterskin and hands it to one of the others, who would soon take a turn digging. "Here, you are going to need this more than me, I'm afraid."

She moves to Murphy and follows his hand-over-the-mouth gesture. "I didn't see Mulberry at the ceremonies. I'd think if she was there, that all of us would have seen her," Shel rolls her eyes at this last comment, remembering all the huge dresses little Mulberry loved to flounce around in. "Not to mention, one of us would have been forced to catch Flim, when he swooned at seeing her."

OOC: DM, Shel plans on briskly walking around the perimeter of the sand pits, to see if anything stands out...purple, rose, etc. If nothing is there on her first walk, she will then bisect the pits, first from east to west, then from south to north. If another team is in one of the squares, she will not be rude enough to tromp through them...she'll move to the next closest square and walk through that one.

As the rest of the group joins the others at the sand pit they see the BadApples and the Hovel Hunters already at work in their stakes areas. Moments after you arrive The Baron's Best and Scalzo's Fury arrive and get started on their digging as well.

Shel finds/sees nothing strange/purple or flowered in or around the pit. Though she does get a few irritated stares from the other groups and a couple of comment telling her to stop spying and go backl to your own work, etc.

For the time being anyway things seem to be going smoothly and everyone is staying away from each other though when the other three teams arrive things could get a bit cowded and dicey. Only time and luck will tell.

***Once per round a person or a pair (one roll per square) will roll a d100 to see what is in your square, if anything.

*****

Around you you hear the sounds of digging and occasionally a clink of a shovel hitting something and every now and again you hear an exclamation about something found.

From the BadApples corner you hear several calls of "Nothing Here!" And shockingly you see two of them suddenly fall over on to the sand unmoving. Several others bring up small bags out of the holes and look inside. After about 20 minutes or do you suddenly you hear Candy call out to the rest of her team "OK guys I got it, get those two, leave the equipment, and let's get moving. Leave all these losers to their digging.

Several minutes later, over with the Hovel Hunters you hear two calls of "Nothing here." Hey Silver peices!" "Hey a potion vial!" "Hey I think I've got it, oops sorry its only six sided." and then another "YES!" Ok all gather your stuff and let's head out. Good luck to the rest of you.

As you dig in pairs you realize you are probbably not being very efficient as you are only digging 3 holes to everyone else's 8-9 but at least you are being thorough.

Square G6 yields a small bag with 10 silver pieces in it.
H7 yields a 10 sided silver nugget with a purple rose on it.
I8 yeilds nothing but sand.

Each round of digging is actually running about 30-45 minutes.

(OOC: I rolled for you yesterday so you could get results and move ahead and because I forgot to tell you. Please forgive me.)

"Edric, well said. All of us ought to be doing something - namely, digging! Once we find something in a square, we move to the next one."

With the discovery of the silver decagon with a purple rose on it, the druid says, "Looks like the 'purple rose' mark on the nugget will be exactly that - forget what I was saying about ... any other interpretation. And, thanks, Shel."

Noting the tactics of the first group to find a gold nugget with a purple rose, Murphy recommends, "All right, let's spread out - one hole per person," He switches over to dig from H8, leaving Edric to continue exploring I8. If he finds something there other than a gold decagon with a purple rose, he'll move on next to a spot outside the chosen nine (assuming others are working on them), suggesting that once our first chosen 9 squares are dug, that we expand our choices over to the next two squares, or down to the next row.

"Everybody dig, whether weak or strong - despite that it may not be polite," Murphy says, with a smile to Zylo. "Unless you're bed ridden, you can handle lifting shovels full of sand for a little while. We're not going to let the BadApples get way ahead of us, are we?"

Murphy tosses another couple of loads to the side, mindful to look for little bags, or even loose lumps in each shovelful. Then he pauses, better realizing what the cleric of Domi referred to.

"Oh - sorry, I misunderstood. You mean the one the BadApples found? Bumbleluck also said there are multiples of the items to be found, but not enough for everyone. Since there are eight teams, we know for certain there are between two and seven the gold decahedrons, marked by a purple rose. Let's find ours!"

There are a umber of things being found by the Baron's Best but they keep moving and digging obviously not having found what they are looking for. Scalzo's Fury, the smallest group by numbers also is finding things but not saying much in fact they are working extremely quietly and after a bit you look up and realize they are no longer in the sand pit at all.

The group gathers up their things and Hazel insists that he doesn't need to ride in the barrow and is just fine to walk.

As the group heads back toward town your thoughts turn to the next part of the scavenger hunt. Wasn't there supposed to be a clue with the nugget? Could it be the purple rose? If so what could it possibly mean?

"Brother, you were out cold," Murphy says with a big smile to his friend. "However, as a thirsty plant, all you needed was a face full of water to perk you right up."

Once Odo and Eral have examined Shel's nugget, he asks to take another look. He examines as closely as he might the details of the purple rose, checking to see if there are any tiny markings (letters or symbols) incorporated into the mark (perception 16). He thinks what he may recall about purple roses (knowledge, nature 18). He considers whether he knows exactly where to look in town (knowledge, local 4).

Murphy thinks aloud about possible resources, people who may be able to help the group find a purple rose. "Madame LaRue deals in herbs. She may know something. Mulberry is a shade of purple - maybe Miss Drinkwater knows something. The mayor's daughter, Blossom - she is pretty stuck up, but with a name like hers, you might think she knows a thing or two about flowers. Sarabella Love Song prays daily to Flower - which is why we have the richest variety and best flowers in the valley, some say. It might be good to talk with her." As Hazel recovers from his bout with the sleep spell, Shel passes the nugget around to the others to take a look at. Eral sees nothing out of the ordinary about the stone other than it is marked with a purple rose. Odo and Murphy both realized thart the "purple rose" itself is the actual clue and figure that they are meant to procure one of the moderately rare flowers for their scavenger hunt. Edric pokes an prods the nugget with his dagger but elicits nothing of import.

The real question still exists, and Murphy puts forth a few ideas though he too is not real sure about them.

"Let's have two or three of us together as a minimum." He takes out a whistle and blows the shrill little instrument. "You can hear that thing halfway across town, or better if the wind blows right." He pulls out a second and hands it to Zylo. "Blow this if you get a purple flower, and we'll all dash to meet right away at the pavilion. Anyone else have a whistle? If you do, let's hear what it sounds like."

Madame LaRue - Herbs Galore
"Who wants to come with me to Madame LaRue's place? I sell her bumblebee honey, and I know she gets herbs and flowers and makes up concoctions from all sorts of ingredients. I figure she has a fair chance of helping us know where to look for a special rose or two."

Pair up - Final counsel? - Let's go!
Murphy recommends four pairs (and one group with three) to go in search, unless people think two groups would provide better security. "If you find a purple rose, try to keep it gently hidden as you bear it back to the pavilion. Now, if anyone has better ideas, let's hear 'em quick, then decide and go."

[Guys - if you succeed at a check the DM gives you, then take advantage of that and reflect the knowledge your character has In Your Post! That way, the rest of us know it. Otherwise, your knowledge, unshared, is of little benefit to the group.]

" I also have a whistle so I will stay with Shel just in case anyone tries to take the nugget. We will search the shops near the pavilion for any purple flowers that might match what is on the coins." Eral nods at Shel and once the group is together and as long as Shel agrees they will head off to the general store to start their search.

Just for necessities, of course," Shel says with a devious grin crossing her face. She follows on the heels of her new friend, heading towards the shops near the pavilion as requested.

"Good luck, everyone..hurry back and be alert for whistle blasts!"

Hazel quickly gets up, and blushing, offers his arm to Alouryn.

"It will be my pleasure to escort you. I fear I don't know the town, but I am sure that with Murphy directions we will get there quickly enough."

While he walks (runs) with her, he feels his heart race more than it should be. To see her next to him, her red hair, her green eyes... it is always, to him, as if the first time he has laid eyes on her.

And, for a moment, nothing else exists. No games, no flowers, no sun or sky... just a smile in that freckled face, asking him what is he thinking, what caused him to smile...

"What? Sorry! I was thinking in the fool I made of myself in the sandpit."

The party once again splits up trying to cover all bases at once and again is met with mixed results.

Alouryn and Hazel make their way up the road and passed the Belly Buster and on to the track that leads toward the Center for Enlightenment and then Flower's Temple. Once at the temple the gate is open as is normal and the walkway leads up to the temple steps and to the doorway where Sarabella LoveSong stand looking out over the surrounding gardens. Good day Devotee Bumblebottom. What brings you to the temple today of all days?

********************************

Flimisbild and Odo head off to find Mulberry DrinkWater and ask her if she knows anything about Mulberry Roses. They track her down having a bite to eat at the Dancing Pig surrounded by a half dozen fawning young men.

***************
Zylo and Edric head off toward the Mayour's house in hopes of finding his Daughter Blossom in residence. No one answers the door once they arrive, but they sneak a peak around the back in the garden and see Blossom out there working with her flowers. In fact she seems to be checking the stems and leaves of a rose bush that has Mulberry Roses on it.

*********

As everyone else has paired up and headed out he decides that he will head off to Madame Larue's on his own and heads out past the sling and arrow and the Dancing Pig and keeps on down the road just until it begins to curve northward to the farms and finds himself at the reclusive Madame LaRue's. The door is open and he can here Madame Larue muttering as she goes about her business inside.

"Well, Murphy Bumblebee Leafwin Pipewood, Are you going to stand out there all day or are you going to come in and speak with me?

As he enters he sees what appear to be Mulberry Roses in a vase on the counter.

***********************

Eral and Shel stick around the pavillion area but are also tasked with checking out Peony Flowerbrushes upscale florist shop, Particular Petals. As they get there they see the Hovel Hunters coming out from the shop, a Mulberry Rose in their hand.

Shel skips along the path with Eral, enjoying herself immensely on the Scavenger Hunt. "What do you think the BadApples did to get on everyone's bad side? Do you think they would be stinky enough to actually try to harm someone so that they could win? That'd be terrible," she grumbles, then immediately brightens up when she sees the Hovel Hunters heading in their direction carrying the object of their hunt.

"Hey, we're on the right path! Lookiee there," Shel points to the group with the flower. "You'd better hurry! We're right on your heels," she calls out and teases the other group. She picks up her pace heading toward Particular Petals store.

"Good day, Madame LaRue," Murphy says politely. "I trust that last batch of honey was to your liking. The bees' two favorite flowers for that batch were lavender and St. John's Wort. A soothing combination, some say. How does it sit with your customers so far?"

He awaits her reply, then asks, "Have you had any customers for those lovely mulberry roses today?" He listens, then says, "I should like to buy some. What is your asking price?" He has about ten gold pieces plus change with him at the moment, and will meet her price if it seems reasonable ... he may haggle lightly if it seems too high. He is also open to performing a reasonable service (in the future) in return, if she is open to that (diplomacy: 19). He requests two. For one he asks for wrapping, and places it carefully in his bag, the other he carries openly.

"Thank you kindly, Madame LaRue! See you later!"

Murphy walks to the door, closes it gently, then runs back toward the pavilion, rose held across his chest, the petals shielded from the wind by his cupped hand, slowing slightly to give three tweets on his whistle every hundred yards or so. He looks to see if he can spot any of the friends on his team on the way back, in particular looking for Shel, as she has the golden nugget - and he also listens for any answering whistle (Perception: 25 to cover the spot / listen - or should I roll twice? Please roll for me if a second one is needed).

Shel and Eral make it to Particular Petals and adress Peony about the Mulberry Roses.

"Why yes I do have two left, but I am allowed only to sell them to certain people. So if you have the correct nugget, They are 3 gp each. If you do not have the nugget then I am afraid I cannot help you."

*****

Murphy enters Madame LaRue's and asks about the Mulberry Roses and how much they cost. She smiles and turns to adrress him in return.

"Well yes as you can see I am rearranging the few I have right here, but they are not for sale. They are for the competition and those teams who show me the correct nugget. So if you have the nugget then we may proceed with the business at hand. If not than I am sorry as I can not help you."

****

Edric and Zylo burst into the Mayor's back yard and garden, giving Blossom a bit of a scare. There is a mixture of hauty disdain, righteous irritation and a touch of fear in her eyes as she composes herself.

She listens to Edric and Zylo and looks them over a bit. "Well, Do you have it? Let's see it. Come on, I don't have all day."

When she realizes that they do not have the nugget or they tell her they do not have it, she heaves a big "put upon" sigh. "Why are you wasting my time? Please leave my garden at once."

******

Flimsipold and Odo track down Miss Drinkwater and Flimispold makes his way around the other males and somehow manages to find a momentarily vacated seat to plop himself in before he begins his spiel.

As he stumbles over the question a momentary look of amusement washes over her face and then she looks around at her audience. "Oh my. I believe he is asking me if I am related to a flower. How droll. Of course I am not related to a flower, that would make me like a vegetable." She giggles at her own little pun. "I am however named after the Mulberry Rose. Is that what you are asking? Who are you again? I remember seeing you last night I believe at one of the parties, but I don't know anything about a clue. Have a nice day"

****

Hazel watches and thinks about Faoil as Alouryn stutters through his conversation and request with/of Lovesong.
She comes down the stairs and invites them back out into the garden area and walks with them while she speaks.

"Well Alouryn, as you know I do have a slight knowledge of flowers and we have quite the garden here. I am actually a bit perturbed by the use of the Mulberry rose for the competition as they are not supposed to bloom for another 4-6 weeks and they have forced several plants to bloom out of season for this purpose. So your answer is both yes and no." Stopping she indicates a row of four bushes. "We do have several Mulberry rose bushes in the garden, but they are only budding and not in full bloom. I will be glad to let you have one of the buds I pruned today, but I do not have ot know the next clue you need for the competition and I do not believe they will accept the unopened flower as your item."

Shel pulls the gilded nugget out of her pocket and shows it to Peony. "I think this is what you are looking for, ma'am. It's gold and see the purple rose on it? I don't suppose I could buy both of the flowers, could I? You know, in case I were to misplace one," she adds with a mischievous smile.

OOC:Shel will pay for either the one or two roses.

Once the item is in hand, Shel turns to Eral, "Lets get out of here. We're definitely still behind several teams!". As soon as Shel exits the shop, she takes the whistle and starts blasting shrill whistles all the way back to the Pvilion area. Not only should her team hear her, but most of the town should as well. She, of course, was completely oblivious to the annoyance she was causing.

As Madame LaRue would not provide him a rose, he not being the bearer of the rose-marked gold nugget, he thanks her politely, "Yes, a friend on the team has it. Say, you wouldn't have any other colored roses, would you? Or a different kind of flower with a similar stem?" If so, he offers to purchase one - red, white, yellow, or whatever other color - asks for some wrapping, and wraps it so that the end of the stem can be seen, but not the flower itself, then he exits the store with a 'Thank you!' - and runs, not blowing his whistle - back in the direction he last saw Shel.

He soon hears Shel's whistle (perception 27), and alters course to intersect with her and Eral. "Got it? Great! Let's run! To the pavilion!" Now he blows his whistle, so the rest of the team will hear from both, and join them. "Like the wind!"

It may take a bit for him to notice that Eral does not run so fast (that is, if the cleric of Domi is wearing his armor), but it's not far. Maybe they'll pass someone.

Let me say your garden is very nice. Alouryn, I think is better if we go and meet with the rest of the team"

Shel is actually able to purchase two of the roses (deduct 6 gp) and blows her whistle to get the rest of the group's attention and soon they are all back at the pavillion area looking at the roses she bought.

Unwrapping the roses from the paper they are wrapped in the group finds what appears to be another clue.

Bigguns they aren't, but giants they be
go north of the farm and perhaps you''ll see.
The ruins you find, are really just that,
But over run they are by some very large rats.
Cean-up the problem, but do beware
the sounds that the rats may put in the air.
When you're done and the rats are all dead
Bring Larue the one with the largest head.

"Yuck! This next item sounds awful. Are we really to bring back a rat's head? those things can have a nasty bite. Maybe its not meant to be literal...I hope. Does anyone have another interpretation, other than we are to head to some ruins north of the Humble Farm?"

Whatever the case. "Don't worry, Shel, I have a couple of waterproof bags."

"Yep, Hazel, as you say!" "Yeah, there's a spot or two like that, I think. I'm sure we'll find it." (knowledge, local 4... perception 26) He goes forth with his friends, urging all to hustle, and also asking each pair how things went on their explorations. Huffing and puffing.

{OOC. Sorry for the late post all. Life happened.}

The group discusses where to head and the concensus is that they will head to the farm and then go north.

General knowledge DC 12
Highlight to display spoiler: { Most of the folks that have lived in Humbles Ford know that there are ruins around three hours out of town, well over come by the natural growth of the woods. These are the ruins where the monsters come from that parents use to worry their children into being good. }

The group also discusses doing something about earplugs, or wax or pieces of cloth. and picks up some candles for that purpose. It is now late afternoon, so your best guess is that you will get to the ruins just about a half hour before dusk.

The group heads up the old North road passed The Belly Buster and after a bit passed the Second Dinner Club's Towers. Soon they are at the edge of the farm fields and looking at the track that heads off north into the woods.

Survival DC 12Highlight to display spoiler: { It is fairly clear that at least one other party headed this way fairly recently}
Survival DC 15Highlight to display spoiler: { You also note that there seems to be what appear to be the prints from several Wolves.}

As you thought after about a three hour hike (ooc. Cue the theme to Gilligan's island) you spot what appear to be moss and vine covered columns on both sides of the path, which seems to indicate there may be ruins in both directions.

Survival Roll (1d20+6): 22

At the beginning of the road north Hazel looks for tracks. He notices Halfling tracks, recent and hurried. A smile form in his face.

To be replaced with a concerned look.

"Team, there are not only Halfling tracks, from the other teams I recon, but from wolves. Be careful, and lets keep an eye open. Let's go."

He sets off, singing quietly: "The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed. If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost. The Minnow would be lost. The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle..."

At arriving at the ruins he continues.

"Let's start looking for rats... and Wolves... keep you eyes open, and try not to be alone. Alouryn, maybe is best if you stay near me."

He starts looking for the other teams, the rats, and keeps an eye open for the wolves. He doesn't cover his ears with anything, better to hear if something approaches.

General Knowledge roll is 13. I'm on vacation this week, so I am on my IPad and can't access the spoilers, so everyone please look at the general Knowledge spoiler, since Shel would inform everyone.

During the trip, Shel fiddled with the second rosé, flipping it and securing it in her hair, so that it sat pristinely atop her head. She considered what the clue might mean, and tried to search for memories for any memories that might assist in this challenge.

"Wolves," she gulped. "I don't remember anything about wolves when I signed up for this contest. Let's hope we could find a way to scare them off, if we were to encounter one. Hey wolves, leave us alone," the little halfling bellowed. "See...it might have worked," she adds as she looks around nervously.

" Wax sounds like a great idea! Once we get closer and know we're near a few of us should wear a little." Eral thinks there might be another farm on the East side of town that the clue is referring too and will try to convince everyone as to that with Diplomacy Skill (DC=21?). He is also able to see the signs of ruins near by and points out the wolf tracks so in his mind he is quite confused because his knowledge tells him completely opposite of his survival.

1st Roll Nat 1 for Knowledge Local =Woops!
2nd Roll was my Survival Nat 20!
3rd roll was a reflection of my failed knowledge local roll and me trying to convince the party to head East with a Nat 20 Diplomacy Roll.... Sorry guys!

[General knowledge: 10; Survival: 21; Knowledge, Nature: 27; Sense Motive: 10]

Once Shel explains that this is the place referenced for childhood warnings, Murphy almost kicks himself for forgetting that. His own parents did not use the place in that way, but some of his friends and neighbor kids would talk about it as a place to be wary of. "East side of town?" He queries Eral. "Maybe if we don't find anything up north, we can try that."

"Let's go the direction the other halflings did not go recently, friends," the druid says as they come to a left/right choice, "unless you have a hankering to end up fighting them. Let's focus upon rats, and be mindful of wolves. Something that they asked for, too, was the rat with the biggest head. We don't necessarily have to cut the head off and get everything bloody. If we take it, then let's think about bringing the whole thing back. Maybe, someone can make friends with the biggest rat, and persuade it to carry us back to town - but, if not, sorry to say, Alouryn, we may have to kill it. I've helped kill rats that got into the grain bins, so we wouldn't get spoiled food. Who wants rat droppings and rat pee in their bread?"

Seeing Hazel's example, Murphy says - "Not a bad idea - let's pair up, like before, to watch each other's backs. You can go with the same person, or choose different."

As this idea is sorted out, Murphy takes a few minutes to get a beeswax candle lit, and soften some wax. He takes one of his normal bags, and cuts out little strips, about an inch or two square, seeing what size works best for twisting, placing soft wax on the end, and inserting in his ear. He tries to make sure the wax is only warm, not hot, when he gently nuzzles it in. He listens as his friends talk, alternately plugging and unplugging with his finger the ear opposite the waxy cloth plug, to determine how much noise drop he perceives. If not much at all, he retries the ear plug. Once satisfied, he sees if he can carefully pull it out, then press it back in, with a similar diminishing of noise. Then he fashions the next one for the other ear, and finally begins showing his friends what he has done, and makes more cloth & wax ear plugs for those who want them - each one's own ear to be the plug-end mould.

Weapon Inventory
"I carry a sickle and two daggers. Sorry, no blowguns." He looks at the weaponry borne by other members of the group. "Anyone have a net? Tanglefoot bag?"

As they go along, he looks for sources of pitch with which to make some torches, and free sticks on the ground for the same purpose. "In case it gets dark - or we just need some fire." Depending upon what's available, he makes two to six quick torches.

He then approached the wobbly Barfoot and put his hand over his shoulder. "Don't you know the tale about the Hin-Wolf-Rat?!"

Flimsipold closed his eyes and shook his head. "Back when was only just pups, they say, a halflin' rider lost his way! And a big... fat... all 'round nasty wererat bit his wolf!" Flimsipold paused once more, scrutinizing the group and looking to intersect each of their gazes. "And the wolf whimpered in pain! It fell to the ground and turned into the dangerous Were-rat-wolf! And he bit the fallen hin so that he became an even more dangerous Were-rat-wolf-hin!"

"And now, they say... the bloodthirsty were-rat-wolf-hin, mounted atop his rabid were-rat-wolf, rides in nights justlikethisone, hunting for foolish hins justlikeus to turn into his army of were-rat-wolf-hin-hins!" Flimsipold paused, so as to breathe. "So now you tell me, Eddie, do ya wann' to split up?! Can ya take tha risk?! 'Cause if so, I got dibs on Odo."

You decide to go in the opposite direction of the other group and head into the woods. After about 100 feet or so of pretty dense trees and shrubs the trees begin to thin and you come across what are very obviously ruins.

Map https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4J2oKls4_y5VDdWZmRzSnlqLXM/edit?usp=sharing

You all are entering at about A 8-11.

This deep in the woods the light is not very good and as night is about to fall visibility is not at all good and light is at a premium.

This part of the ruins seems to be about 150 ft by 110 ft.

Ahead of you looks to be the remains of what might have been hobbit dwellings and some sort of larger dwelling as well. To your left looks to be the fallen and low remains of a rock wall or edifice of sme sort.

(OOC: Please let me know where you are moving to by using the appropriate coordinates (Ex. moving to D 9) and please take into consideration you PC's movement factor (each square is 5ft.)Consider yourself in combat. So when / if you attack please take note of which opponent you are trying to attack (ex. Moving into position at H19 Dahlia wheels around with a whip strike as she attacks R5 (Rat 5)AC 27 for 18 points damage.)

Still we should make sure we never get separated. And if we do we should never leave another man behind! No!" He looks around the others, pale faced and eyes wide. It isn't clear, though, if he's looking for an agreement from the rest of the group or just making sure that no one else is more lovable and round-around-the-middle than himself, as he lets out a quiet curse once he's had a good look at everyone.

He waits for the others to advance first, or at least someone with a weapon to do so, before slowly making his way forward, Ratcutter drawn and eyes constantly searching for any possible were-rat-wolf-hins sneaking about.

Alouryn casts a light on to her whip and follows close behind Hazel.

Shel hears Murphy call for a light of his torch and moves down next o him lit torch in hand.

Eral moves deeper in to the ruins keeping a close eye out for what can be seen of either wolves or rats and is rewarded by seeing a number of figures coalesce from out of the shadows.

Odo worrying about rat-wolf-hins as he moves into the ruins sees something in every shadow and yet sees nothing there at all.

Flimispold, Zylo and Edric stand just inside the edge of the ruins and let their eyes adjust to the changind lights and shadows.

*********

There suddenly seems to be a lot of rustling and scurrying in the brush and rocks around you and soon you see 7 pairs of red eyes, higher off the ground than what would be normal for rats.

In the torch light you see what appears to be seven R.O.U.S. (Rats of Unusual Size). Three of them are about 2.5 to three feet in length, not counting the tail and appear to weigh about 30 pounds. The other four a just a bit smaller being almost 2.5 feet in length with their tails and about 18 pounds.

With their mouths open and drooling, and their front teeth very visible, they do not look at all friendly.

Flimispold targets Odo's foe R 4 and watches happily as his arrow slams home.

Alouryn casts another spell to help defend Hazel.

Eral manages to escape the entanglement but in doing so he nearly steps into the mass of swarming rats and misses with his attack on R1.

Edric moves forward 5 feet and swings at D3 just as it falls to color spray and bullet and he misses.

When the Shield Other spell form Alouryn affects him, Hazel almost forgets about the fight.

He has never felt so close to another person. He, the ranger, used to be apart and alone in the forest, now shares a metaphysical bond with a beautiful girl from he has been growing incredible feelings.

He is unable to process, to understand, what he feels in that moment. The only thing he knows is that he wants to feel that way forever.

And then the swarm covers him.

He is returned to the harsh reality of the moment by the multitude of bites his body is getting. Even with his armor, and experience he has never seen rats so focused in attacking a much bigger prey. Because he is sure he is that now. He has become prey.

Well, he won't go without a fight! He raises his Sling Staff to get them off him, when he sees a Dire Rat (D1) jump towards Alouryn. He forgets everything else and turns.

Nothing will hurt her is he is able to prevent it.

He looks to flank the Dire Rat (D1) and hit it with all his strength, ignoring the rats covering him. But the emotions and distractions are to big, and he misses his attack.

Murphy is not furthered deafened [Fort save 23] (and, who knows, maybe his hearing is coming back with a natural 100 on the spell check due to deafening?), and zaps the downed and revived rat that Odo fights (R4) for 4 points of electrical damage.

"How is everyone doing? Can anyone hear me?" The deafened druid cannot even hear himself. He turns around to see what is going on around him. [Perception natural 1]

All around Shel, the battlefield became silent. She could only hear a strange buzzing in her ears, and nothing else.

She looked around, but it appeared that the group had the situation well in hand. She wondered if everyone else was as deaf as she, and how long that might last.

OOC Fort save = 5. Shel will delay action until all the others have gone. If an opponent is standing she will try to Acid Splash again. Ranged Touch Attack Roll 14 (minus four if the rat is in melee) and damage is 1 point.

The last two rats go down in spectacular fashion chopped bashed sliced and pierced. Your first real combat as a group and you survived. Perhaps not without injuries or near deaths but you are each alive and surrounded by four large rats 1 very large Dire rat and a bunch of pieces from two others. Do you stay a bit longer and see what is to be seen or collect what you are in need of and be off. Now decisions must be made.

Perception DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { there seems to be some writing or graffitti on the low wall. If a Linguistics DC 16 or read magic spellcraft DC 12 is made then a magic mouth spell come alive and says.
"Nuggets all of gold lying in sand,
Purple roses from gardens must be in hand,
Stones from the belly of rats so bold,
The staves of the judges All have been stole.
Find them you must, search far and wide,
The staves themselves are easy to hide.
Within the houses of Flower, Dinners and Lucks,
Steal one back or lose all your luck"

After noticing that all the rats were dead, Odo carefully sheathes both his swords.

"That went quite a bit better than I was expecting. Especially since we were facing rodents of unusual size."

He pauses for a moment, grinning smugly, before pointing at the dire rat's corpse.

"That one there seems to be the biggest. And we need its... Head?"

Odo then points out the graffiti in case anyone else missed it, not really knowing what to do with it himself.

Roll is perception.

"Thanks Hazel but I'm feeling a bit better now. No time for sitting, take me to the others so I can do some more healing for everyone"

Alouryn will take Hazel's hand and walk until she is in the middle of everyone before channelling positive energy again. She prays to Flower and a mild glow emanates from her silver holy symbol illuminating a 30 foot radius giving everyone 3 more hp back.

"There, I feel much more like myself now. Thank you for your concern Hazel. I saw that swarm coming after you and I had to help the only way I could. It's awful that these rats had to die, I've never been attacked by anything before, but at least we are all OK. Is anyone else still in need of more healing?"

Flimsipold once more recuperated his weapons, returning them from whence they came. He limped on over to Odo and the others, though the kind chants and words of the healers had seen him recovered, as if to dramatize the fact that he took a hit. "Let's see here..." He said, almost musingly, looking down at the graffiti pointed out by Odo.

Roll is spellcraft, I assume magic mouth starts mouthin'?

As the action settles down, inventory of friends and fallen rodent foes is taken, and Odo and Flimsipold indicate the words, Murphy looks over whatever is scratched upon the low-lying wall.

As he is deafened, however, and unless the words are also written in text, he has no idea whatsoever what the magic mouth is saying.

He recovers his sickle and the presumably burnt-out (or sputtering) torch he dropped at the beginning of the fight, then takes a moment to clear a spot of vegetation so he can write in the ground:

Some of us cannot hear.
I cannot.
I saw lips moving on the wall.
If you could hear, please write
down what was said.
He pantomimes to someone with an active light spell or a functioning torch to read his words. Once they have been read, he runs the palm of his hand over the dirt, to give a smooth writing surface, hands a little stick to whoever volunteers, then sits back on his haunches to see what they say.

His clothing bloodied on the left side where the huge rat bit him, Zylo looks somewhat worse for wear. Fortunately, he has not been rendered deaf. He looks at what Murphy wrote. He takes the stick from him, and scribbles in the dirt:
We need the gold nugget,
purple roses,
stones from rats' bellies,
staffs from the judges
and we're supposed to look
for them in the houses of
flower, dinners and lucks
or we'll lose all our ducks
- Something like that

He turns to Shel, and Alouryn, and Eral. He looks at his side, then back up at them. "Say, someone can help fix me up?"

Murphy Bumblebee Leafwin Pipewood HP 8/9 AC:15/13/13 Deafened; (Kim McCoy)

Murphy carefully reads a few times through what Zylo wrote. "Ducks? We have any ducks?"

He turns so all can see his lips. "Let's see if there are stones in the rats' bellies - cover your ears in case any more explode." He pantomimes cutting open the belly of one of the rats. He takes out a waterproof bag. "This is for the biggest rat's head." He holds it out to whoever wants to do the honors. "Since I cannot hear - Odo - will you lead us at least until I get my hearing back? Oh - and, GREAT WORK EVERYBODY!! "

Then he gets to work looking into the bellies of each of the big rats, plugging his already damaged ears to preclude further damage before digging in. He does not put too much care into fastiousness, but rather performs the stone-hunting surgery in as expeditious a manner as is possible.

Shel casts a spell while the others are pantomiming , writing, listening and butchering and is rewarded as the spell sweeps through the ruins with a faint magical aura coming from what looks to have been a small dwelling of some sort.

Inside the belly of the dire rat you cut up is what appears to be a dull grey rocklike mass, that looks like a thunderstone.

Murphy Bumblebee Leafwin Pipewood HP 9/9 AC:15/13/13 Deafened (Kim McCoy)

Murphy extracts the slimed thunderstone, carefully wipes it off on the verdant foliage lying underfoot, then holds it up for others to see. In a louder than normal voice, he says, "This is why the big booms. Weapons hit the thunderstones inside." He dampens one end of an empty sack, and gingerly wipes the rest of the surface of the thunderstone clean, and dries it with the other end. "Odo, should we check the other rats for more thunderstones?" If Odo does not discourage him from doing so, Murphy opens and checks the stomachs of other large rats, too.

If Shel points out the small dwelling, getting his attention, he will leave off rat stomach surgery and join others in looking over the dwelling.

Odo gives Murphy a thumbs up. "I wonder if we really will need the head, though. I suppose we should take it, though now I think about it it certainly does seem like a weird clue for a scavenger hunt."

If no one else attempts to do so or tries to stop him, Odo will take Murphy's waterproof bag and begins cutting the dire rat's head off with his longsword.

"The clue said we had to bring the head to someone, didn't it? But we need to look for one of those staves as well, and it sounds like there are only three so we should get moving to find them quickly. Anyone know what or where the houses of Flower, Dinners and Lucks might be?"

Murphy appreciates the thumbs-up from Odo, and is pleased he took the bag to deal with the biggest rat's head. No idea what he's saying, though. He does notice Shel's waving hands, so goes to look at what she has discovered, and to take a look around there.

Every once in a while he looks up and around to see if anything else of import is happening - like more rats showing up.

He pantomimes an ok sign, and later, with a smile pantomimes hitting the remaining thunderstone with his staff.

"We were lucky I didn't kill that one! Let's go find whatever we need to find next, it's getting late and I'm getting hungry!"

"So we're looking for the staffs of the judges now?" Groaned Flimsipold, trying to recuperate his arrow from one of the rat's hinds. "They could be anywhere with a message as cryptic as that." He took great care to rearrange himself, raggedy or not there seemed to be a standard of appearance which Flimsipold followed religiously. The minstrel then approaches Alouryn. "Say, weren't you a priestess of Flower? Could one of them sticks be in your temple?"

Mostly healed up from their encounter with the ROUS, Shel tries to get everyones attention, through pantomime that her spell has located something other than the magic mouth spell. Leading the way to what becomes very clear was the Rat's den. Scattered around the mess you find a nice dagger, 50 gold,10 gems (50 gps each) and an intricately carved turquise bird with several feathers dagling from it. The dagger and the bird radiate magic.

The prevailing thought is that the next and final itm the group needs to locate/recover is one of the judges staff. But where to look? Flimsipold suggests perhas there is one at Flower's Temple.

Surprisingly the sun hasn't even fully set yet and full dark isn't likely to come for about another hour or so.

So hungery the group heads back to town and possibly to Flower Temple.

Odo Barfoot HP: 10/11, AC: 19/16/14 (Matthew)
Monday August 12th, 2013 9:43:31 AM

Odo rummages in his pouch for a piece of chalk which he uses to scrawl messily on one of the ruins' walls, reciting aloud what he writes.

"We think the house of Flower might be the Flower temple. That other team had a Priestess of the Flower too, the one what danced with me in the Pig, so they might have already gotten the clue from there. But Alouryn and those that can't hear should go there anyway. Might be able to fix ears. The Dinner house might be the Dinner Club's place, so the rest of us could check there."

He then waits for the input of the others, giving them his chalk if necessary, and will smudge up the key details of his writing in case another team comes along later.

Shel takes a look at the two magical items, trying to discover what kind of magic they held. First the bird, then the dagger. After gaining what information she can, she scoops up the remainder of the goodies, to be divided when they had a few moments to sit and talk. She handed the dagger to Odo, who had the looks of the strongest warrior. "It's magic," she yelled too loudly, as she still had the damn ringing in her ears.

Only after the gear was gathered, did she again focus in on the task at hand. She grabbed the chalk and simply wrote OK in response. She gives a smile and big thumbs up, ready to continue on the next leg of the course.
