The agents set off on their way to the wedding, loaded down with provisions and well wishes from Tinker's family. They even throw in a customary gnomish carving as a wedding gift to Pru's sister!

The most direct route is through a wooded area, and there is no town in sight or anywhere on the maps they have of the area. Looks like tonight will be a roadside campout. I hope you all have your s'mores sticks!

Darkness approaches after a pleasant day of walking, and all that's left to do is set your watches for the night.

Please let me know who's on what shift, what light sources you're using, and perception checks.

Trayvin leaves the setting of the watch to Nikolai. He volunteers to take a shift, and during his turn he will sit just far enough away from the campfire to be able to scan around with darkvision.

After consulting with Calliembria, it was decided to bypass the town and trail blaze it towards Pru's family's place. There'd be enough time for festivities at the wedding party.

Getting toward late afternoon, he starts looking for a good place to camp.
Survival +14 = 28

Spotting one, he points it out and the best place to hitch the horses. Everyone knows their duties and that a cold camp is best in strange woods. He assigns watches according to each preference and he takes the middle watch as he can see well enough in the dark and he does not have magical energies that require a good night's sleep

SIgvar helps set up camp. He agrees with Nickolai about a cold camp, since they are in unfamiliar environs. He uses the camp axe though to clear small trees and brush from the site. These he piles in the center of the camp in case they need a sudden fire, knowing that with a though Prudence can light it. He volunteers for watch with Prudence, knowing she can not see i the dark either and hoping to consult with her further about her sister and a gift. He thinks a couple of hens and a single rooster will make a good gift, following her advice about giving a renewable gift like livestock.

Anna weighs in to Nikolai with her opinion as to where the campsite should be.

"Put me in at a watch when it will be fully dark, when I can take advantage of my darkvision ability." Anna says to Nikolai, "I will even pair up with someone without the ability to see in the dark. If you want me to take a solo watch I will disguise myself as Tree"

Prior to going on her watch Anna activates her Darkvision morphamancy.

If she has a solo watch she will camoflage herself using Treeshape choosing a form that is consistent with the surrounding foliage (Know[nature] : 16)

Pru takes whichever watch she is assigned, and does her best to stay alert. If Sigvar asks, she endorses his plan of giving hens and a rooster as a wedding gift.

For light, she uses a Dancing Lights spell, using it to make four dim balls of light placed around the camp. She can brighten them to max if something happens.

Tinker travels well, keeping rear watch as is his habit. For camp, he sets a canvas against the wagon as a lean-to and goes to collect firewood; his friends keeping him well away from the cooking!

For watches, he lets his friends sort themselves out;
Sigvar and Prudence for the evening
Trayvin and Nikolai at the mid
Anna and Michael for the deep night
Pompous and Tinker for the late to dawn; the most likely time for an ambush.

He thinks himself satisfied; all watches but the first have someone with darkvision.

Nikolai approves of Tinker's watch order suggestion and wonders about the big pile of brush in the middle that Sigvar gathers. 'Well, if anything, small critters can use the pile to hide in from predators, quail can nest in it, and...' so he says nothing about it.

Setting up camp is old hat to the Agents by now. They are used to roughing it a little, and all of them enjoy some tales by the fire and fruit roasted in the coals. Nikolai finds a small depression that lends itself to the fire, and there are no sizeable rocks about that could cause any discomfort under sleeping rolls.

Once darkness begins to fall, the fire is extinguished and they settle into their assigned watches and sleep shifts. The earliest shift is taken by those without the best eyes, letting those with enhanced senses take the darkest part of the night. Having so many hands is nice, as each shift is shortened by an hour, allowing everyone a good bit of rest.


1st watch - Pru and Sigvar
2nd watch - Nikolai and Trayvin
3rd watch - Anna and Michael
4th watch - Tinker and Pompous


Pru and Sigvar stay up, sitting under the canvas covering as the others are bedding down, chatting about the wedding and wondering where to get the best laying fowl around. Pru is talking about her sister's preferred colours so she can get a platter large enough to serve a roasted rooster. He hardly notices as her words trail off, thinking she is reminiscing about her family and hoping the reunion goes well.

It takes him a few minutes to realize something is off about her silence, and a slightly more solid shadow has taken residence behind her, and several other shadows are moving about in the night.

Sigvar finally sees the threat for what it is and acts.
" ENEMIES IN THE CAMP!!"
He shouts at the top of his lungs. Moving like a trained warrior he stands and draws his blade in one clean motion. As he moves he lashes out with his blade at the figure grappling Pru.

Move- Stand up and draw weapon (Free action)
Standard- Attack hits AC 27 for 22 points of magical adamantite damage

If allowed, SIgvar was armed with his horns when the creature attacked Pru within his threatened area, possibly provoking and AoO if that happened, here are the results... Attack with horns as AoO hits AC 19 for 8 non-magical damage

Michael has never been a heavy sleeper, and in the bush, he sleeps fully clothed. He's up like a shot, hands drawing his blades as he rises. He looks to where he heard Sigvar speak, the looks around. he sees the enemies surrounding them, he moves to the closest to him, stopping about 6' away, studying the creature and waiting for it to move into his AOO Range. If he recognizes it, he yells out the party what it is.

[OOC: Since it is during the first watch, the Extended Mage Armor on both Pru and Nikolai is still active.]

Pru reminds Sigvar of some of the Mailed Fist drills they did about helping spellcasters (use the Team Tactics feature to give Sigvar the Shielded Caster feat for a round). Concentrating carefully, Pru attempts to cast a spell.

[Attempt to cast Elemental Body I, a 4th level spell. Concentration DC is 10+opponent's CMB+spell level. Concentration check is 21, so if the opponent's CMB is +7 or less, Pru succeeds.]

If the spell is successful, then the opponent is suddenly grappling an air elemental! If not, well, nothing happens.

Pompous wakes at his comrades' scream of warning. The ranger rises quickly, grabbing and readying his shield. He then draws his sword and activates it's fire capabilities.

Pompous then readies himself to defend himself against any coming attacks until his eyes can adjust.

Anna does not sleep in her armor as she does not want to be fatigued. She is roused awake by Sigvar's yelling, stands up from prone and immediately changes her shape. Once again her hair turns green and leafy and her legs become like tree trunks. With her darkvision from her new form she can see they are surrounded and tries to figure out what may be surrounding them. If she can identify what any of their assailants are she tells her companions what they are.

Nikolai jumps with a start. He'd barely gotten to sleep. Wide awake now his attention is first drawn to where the warning shouts came from. His eyesight should allow him to see well enough but the figure around Pru is a bid shady!

Something smells funny about this and instincts kick in and he takes a closer look at the figure.

Meanwhile, an awareness of others about appears to indicate they are surrounded. Normally, he'd try to inquire their intentions and try to avoid a fight, but it seems that time was bypassed by Pru's predicament. He says a quick prayer, calling upon Alemi to give his hands and feet extra strength.

Sigvar is quick to alert his companions about the attack, but not quite quick enough to get his horns into the creature before it latched onto Pru. (no one beat its stealth roll). Still, he pops up and delivers a solid blow to it, narrowly missing Pru in the process. Sigvar only Perception 20Highlight to display spoiler: {Despite the magical nature and material of your sword, it did not seem to take the full force of your blow}

Michael pops up, looks around, and spots the creatures for his team. His experience does not tell him what they are though.

Pru hopes that the creature will have a harder time holding onto Air than a girl and successfully changes herself into an elemental.

Pompous rouses himself and activates the fire on his sword, illuminating the environs a bit. found a ranger image to use, feel free to change it if you prefer another. Tinker brushes the sleep from his eyes and draws his weapon as well.

Anna changes into her new favourite form and can see the pale creatures clearly. but none of her impressive range of knowledge tells her what they are either.

Nikolai stands up and encases his hands in magic. His senses tell him more than the others, and he identifies the creatures as Vampire Spawn!

Meanwhile, the one on Pru tries to continue its draining attack, sucking at her airy essence. The air is too slippery though, and he cannot hold on. failed to maintain grapple, even with the correct roll

However, several more are now incoming! The awakened Agents are much harder targets though. The two attacking Michael are able to use their positioning to their advantage and both make contact. AC 23 for 3 damage and 1 negative level, AC 22 for 4 damage and 1 negative level

For each negative level a creature has, it takes a cumulative –1 penalty on all ability checks, attack rolls, combat maneuver checks, Combat Maneuver Defense, saving throws, and skill checks. In addition, the creature reduces its current and total hit points by 5 for each negative level it possesses. The creature is also treated as one level lower for the purpose of level-dependent variables (such as spellcasting) for each negative level possessed. Spellcasters do not lose any prepared spells or slots as a result of negative levels. If a creature’s negative levels equal or exceed its total Hit Dice, it dies.

Sigvar notices nothing amiss as he drives his blade into the creature. Then he see's Michal's predicament and decides it cannot stand. Moving would rob him of attacks that he needs to drop one of Michael's opponents, so he stands and delivers even though one of the things Nickolai is calling 'vampire spawn' has come up to him.
In the back of his mind he can hear his mother commanding him. Their touch will rob you of your strength, do not allow them to touch you son. But Michael, despite his killer instinct has been touched twice and is surrounded. Sigvar's honor will not allow him to withdraw to a safer distance while an ally is so threatened.

Sigvar is now fully armed and has all his attacks available. (And this apparently makes him roll poorly)

Sword 1 hits AC 25 for 15 damage (Magical adamantite damage)
Shield 1 hits AC 17 for 11 damage (Magic damage)

With the enemy identified, Trayvin knows which weapon he will use. With holy symbol held up high for all to see, he calls upon the strength of the gods to combat those things which should not be alive, and technically aren't.

Actions: channel energy = 14 dmg to vampire spawn(DC 16 will save for half) -it looks like all but maybe #6 are in range.

Since the vamps closed with him, Michael gets AOO's against them, but the undead taint skews his aim and he misses both, going fully defensive he takes a 5' step back and to the right refusing the flank. The hits hurt and he feels his energy decrease, He'll have to change his tactics as this foe is immune to his mojo. Right now though he needs to get to where his allies can back him up when he starts tripping the vamps up.

AOO to hit AC 13 on #1 for 6 points
AOO to hit AC 12 (nat 1) for 6 points.

Nikolai has his hands full as he calls out what he believes these creatures are. There are many of them but his team now is in full order. The vampire spawn right in front of him takes the brunt of his full attack.

Unarmed Flurry vs #5:

These creatures aren't used to things trying to grab them, and Anna's vines easily ensnare her target.

Pru pulls out her signature move and inflicts some massive burns on her foes! guessing you mean 6 and 7? 7 and 8 looks like it would hit you as well. Please correct if I'm wrong.

Sigvar steps to Michael's aid, and his weapons quickly knock down his target. His horns don't connect with the 2nd target though.

Pompous steps to the creature engaging Nikolai and strikes it once with his fiery blade. The blade itself doesn't seem to do much, but the fire singes it a bit.

Trayvin knows how to treat the undead, and his God's fury radiates through them, with varying degrees of effect.

Michael feels the strength drain out of him and concentrates of avoiding further attacks.

Nikolai punches his target twice in the face, but it still comes at him.

Tinker steps forward to target the creatures menacing Trayvin, and several chops and stabs with his Urgrosh send it to the ground.

After an assault by the Agents, several of the creatures drop to the ground. Two of these, however, turn into cloud of gas that slowly begin drifting away.

The other four are undeterred and continue their assault. Having had little success attacking physically, most turn to attacking minds instead. They seem to recoil from Trayvin's presented holy symbol, but there are plenty of other targets to attack. The one remaining by Michael continues its previously successful physical assault, but does not get through his focused dodging.

So, I've been forgetting to add his strength bonus to damage. Likely very irrelevant up to this point. Hey Yves, rules rusty much?

Tinker blinks as his opponent becomes a form of gas, and the one of the evil ones takes the opportunity to attack his mind. The stubborn dwarf shakes his head and looks at the spawn. "Now, that wasn't nice..."

Looking about, Tinker dodges past Michael and Spawn 4 to get the monster into a flanking maneauver without exposing himself.

Pru sees the clouds of gas drifting away, and idly wonders whether they can be affected by fire. Guess we'll find out, she thinks, and lobs another fireball, this time aiming to get Spawn 6, 7, and 8. They take 38 points of fire damage, DC 19 Reflex save for half.

Sigvar panics a bit as the compulsion tries to take him, but mustering his will and not willing to let his friends suffer the same fate as his mother, he pushes through it and strikes one undead down and drives another back! His horns, though quite pointy, don't make much of a dent in his target.

Pompous feels a sudden surge of strength in his arms and chops twice, striking down his opponent.

Nikolai feels the insidious tendrils of compulsion almost reach him, but his training and his heritage center him and allow him to resist the dominating gaze. it is in fact an enchantment effect, so +4 applies without a hero point Channeling his irritation, he pummels the spawn into the ground.

Anna successfully lashes out and entangles the one that has been hit the least.

Trayvin, through luck of attacking a downed foe, actually hits his target and crushes its body into the dirt a bit more.

Michael cannot seem to find a vulnerable area to target, and his knifes do little but distract the entangled creature.

Tinker's natural dwarfiness helps him resist the domination and he moves to help dispatch Michael and Anna's foe.

Pru does an experiment on whether gas is flammable. She cannot really tell, but they don't seem to be moving as much after being kersploded.

Seeing their comrades so easily dispatched, VS 2 decides to retreat into the woods. VS 4 doesn't like being wrapped up and poofs into gas, drifting through Anna's vines and moving to the North.

The annoying thing about the shambling mound form is that they are slow. Nikolai did give the order to go after the vampire though. It seems like it is time to use the many changes Ma'ab's Gift and alter her form. Shambling mound Anna shrinks and goes from being a large plant to a small plant. She has lost a lot of the combat ability of her previous form but she keeps the darkvision.

After taking a full round action to change her form she takes a 5 foot step ready to go full pursuit next round.

Nikolai's knowledge of the undead tells him exactly how to deal with the bodies. While Pru, Michael, and Anna keep the healing of the creatures at bay, Tinker and Sigvar go about beheading them so they can be burned.

Despite the head being removed and the application of fire, there seems to be something missing, as the body itself continues to heal itself, though not faster than the damage being applied. Knowledge Religion DC 14 Highlight to display spoiler: {A stake through the heart stops the regeneration or anointing the head with holy water. Sunlight or immersion in running water will also destroy it.}

The clouds are stuck where they are, but the Agents are not sure how to deal with them, other than keeping them stuck that way until the sun rises, which is a good 5-6 hours away.

Nikolai takes off into the night with his torch, trusting his chosen companions to follow. He is plenty fast enough to keep up, but the naturally stealthy vampire spawn is tough to track, especially through unfamiliar forest. survival roll to continue tracking please.

Nikolai had hoped that his skills could keep up with the vampire spawn and find out where the monster's lair is, but it is difficult to track a creature of the night, in the night. He had thought to bring Anna along for her ability to change shape and maybe into something that could track it better but his haste did not convey his ideas.

Tinker's warning is valid, the main reason for the chase, but it could be that the vampire is waiting in the shadows to see how his minions fare and pick off any that get separated. In any case, he decides to call off the chase, as it began proving more difficult than expected and getting lost would not be a good thing.

"All right. Everyone back to camp. Let's deal with those downed and discuss plans for tomorrow. If it doesn't rain, maybe we can still track this one."

Before he turns back he breaks off a small branch and sticks it into the ground to mark the spot where he stopped, then returns to camp.

Arriving back at camp, he pulls out his magic kama (+2) and helps keep the vampire spawn down.

"Good thing we have a pile of wood for a bonfire already ready. Pru, set that pile on fire and lets start burning these monsters."

As Michael is burning one of them, he notices it keeps healing despite the fire, the damage or even, good job Tink beheading. He thinks about what he knows about vamps. then it occurs to him. Hey guys, I think this burning and beheading aint gonna work unless we put holy water on them or throw them in a flowing stream or let the sun hit them. we can steak them through the heart and let the sun do them in the morning. In any case, if we got vamps around that means there is a coven and a Master around somewhere, we might need to see if the locals are having any problems that may need fist attention.

Vegypygmy-Anna takes of after Nikolai only to see him turn around after she traveled the 60 feet that a double move action would allow.

Vegypygmy-Anna claws off a piece of clothing from one of the downed vampire spawn before they can be burned. With the plan being to continue the search for the Master and the base of the coven in the morning having the option to be able to track by scent couldn't hurt.

" We are capable warriors, this attack was nothing to us despite their resistance to our weapons. A band of normal folk set upon by these creatures at night would have been a massacre. What do you know about these undead and their 'master', the one that spawned them? Knowing how to hurt them would indeed be helpful in the morning. If Trayvin can relieve my fatigue in the morning I will watch through the night so that the spell casters can refresh their minds and be ready for the hunt in the morning. Anna might be able to produce some items to help us in the morning's fight from her bag. All of this hinges on what you all can tell us of these vampire creatures. I know only that they are undead and hated by Gargul. That is enough for me. But all swagger aside, knowing the enemy goes a long way towards walking out the other side of a fight, rather than being carried out."
Sigvar has already started to drag some of the brush towards the 'clouds' that were monsters. He figures that if Prudence's fire stopped them once, then a fire tended under them for the night will hold them for dawn to do it's work.

Thanks to Michael's secret reading of folklore while in the library back home, he dredges up a solution to the bodies that won't seem to stay dead. Once staked, the regeneration stops and they are confident that it will remain so until the daystar does its good work.

Despite good intentions, Sigvar's bonfire doesn't have the same punch as the magical fire Pru conjures, and soon enough, the clouds drift on and out of sight. Still, with half their number gone for good, these spawn would think a few extra times before assaulting a well armed group again.

He is right though, less experienced prey would easily fall to a group such as this, and before you know it, their numbers could get out of hand.

Nikolai sets his marker and Anna gets a piece of clothing for scent, hoping to track them more successfully in the morning.

No one is quite comfortable sleeping, but some rest is achieved. In the morning, 4 piles of ash greet the Agents.

Michael can make 2 DC 14 fortitude saves to negate the negative levels gained.

Please make 2 survival rolls if you wish to try tracking the spawn.

OOC: in the movies fire did well, but that was the movies.

IC: Nikolai gets up before dawn and prays for his ranger spells for the day. It occurs to him that his father, a cleric of Domi, would sometimes say a prayer of Guidance to aid someone or himself in some task. Knowing that Michael is going to start really feeling the ill effects of the vampire's touch, he approaches Trayvin and suggests he cast one of those Guidance spells on Michael.

"Trayvin, do you have a Guidance spell you can cast on Michael to help him fight off the vampire's touch ill effects?"

While the others break camp, Nikolai follows Pompous to the spot he left his stick and tries to pick up the trail.

Sigvar is baffled. Nickolai hates the undead, and as a ranger hunts them. Trayvin is a priest, yet neither one chooses to enlighten the others about what to expect from a vampire, or why the minions were resistant to even magic weapons. He just shrugs and looks at the place the tracks were left trying to help Pompous.

OOC: gonna wait on making the save. prayer and Heroism will increase my chances of making these saves by 15% from a 65% to an 80% chance to make the saves. since we seem to be running off to go sacrifice ourselves to one of the top tier undead, I'd like to at least die with all my levels.

Michael gets a bit of sleep and is proud to see the Undead turned to ash in the morning. He still feels drained and weak from their touch and shudders a the memory of the negative energy sucking at his life. He knows that with a huge push of his Fortitude he will either dispell the negative energy or it will latch onto him permanently. He's hoping his friends will be able to help him

OOC: Suggest Trayvin cast Restoration since he has it prepared - as these are currently temporary negative levels, there is no component cost.

There is no problem tracking back to the waypoint stick, which has not been disturbed in the night. As they walk, they discuss what they know about the undead, vampires in particular, and unless someone is holding out on them, they will need to do some research. Too bad the Citadel library is so far from here.

From the waypoint, tacking it becomes a more difficult task, but pooling together their knowledge of woodscraft, they eventually come upon a hill with a just about human sized opening leading down into the darkness. There is evidence of some predator that walks in a human form living in this cave.

Everyone seems worried about the presence of a master vampire, but have seen no sign of this master's presence, other than the spawn that attacked them in the night.

go ahead and hit me with that Restoration spell Trayvin, If Tinker will let me borrow his Cloak for a few minutes I'll see If a can push the rest of this stuff out on my own. (Tinker has a Cloak of Resistance +2 that should cancel out the -1 from the neg level, giving me a 8th level save of +5 or 60% chance of saving. ) also anybody with any knowledge of how to effectively kill these things needs to speak up, Nikolai? you are the undead killing ranger, what can we do to these things to make them be good undead?

If Trayvin takes out the one neg level and Tinker lets me borrow his cloak I'll take my save now.

Nikolai is pleased that they successfully tracked that remaining one to its lair.

"it occurred to me that their lair had to be close, since they have to reach their coffin within a couple of hours once they are turned into vapors due to injuries. It also came to mind while I meditated that the spawn aren't necessarily controlled by a master vampire. If that master vampire is killed, the spawn become free ranging vampires.

I didn't delve too much into Spawn, as they are much weaker. What I remember is that master vampires can be hurt by magic and silver, otherwise very hard blows do only minimal damage and they can heal up pretty quick. Garlic is a good deterrent but only temporarily. The most effective is sunlight. A stake through the heart will kill it but only so far as the stake remains there.

I like Pompous' idea that we take a moment and study the situation and prepare ourselves. We can easily fashion a number of wooden stakes in no time. If Anna can pull out a handful of holy water in the meantime, that would be very helpful.

My cloak is weaker than Tinker's. Sorry I didn't think of that use myself.

They don't like mirrors and I have a small silvered one. Anna can fish out some garlic strings? lace them around our necks? These precautions can only buy us some time as they will eventually overcome their revulsion of holy symbols, garlic and mirrors, but just a little time is all we need.

I remember reading about cutting their heads off but I thought that burning their bodies separate from their heads would be sufficient. I'll have to study that chapter again.

Whatever we do we need to do while it is bright daylight. Any other thoughts?

As the group discusses whether or not to look for a vampire, and how to fight one if they did, Trayvin keeps himself busy patching the Agents up.

Actions: spells cast: lesser restoration on Pru(heals 2 con), restoration on Michael, and 3 charges from the cure light wounds wand on Michael(heals 12hp).

While he works, he mentions a few items of note that he has heard or studied over the years. "Silver and magic would be best, but any strong hit will slow them down. If they try their mind tricks on you, you're gonna need all your training to fight it off. Or else hope someone has a protection spell. Holy water will damage them, but most of us are probably better off just using regular weapons. Fire is good to use, but they're smart and many of them will protect against it. Most of Pru's arsenal should prove useful. And to finish them off, I think Michael and Nikolai hit the finer points. They can be very old and experienced, so expect the unexpected."

"I can repair most of the damage that they can do, given time. But some of my supplies for doing so are low or used up." Trayvin doesn't indicate one way or the other whether to try and go after the vampires. He leaves the decision to the commanders.

I believe Nikolai's roll would be high enough factoring in ranger bonuses vs favoured enemy.

1lb of garlic is 1sp, and holy water is fine.


After a bit of discussion, most of the lingering effects of the vampire's touches are dispelled.

Nikolai dredges up a bit of info that he was in too much of a hurry to share the night before. He also remembers that 3 spawn retreated in gaseous form.

Stakes are easily made from deadfall whittled down to a point.

Sigvar wonders about the cave's depths, but has no way to know how deep it goes or if it gets wider without scouting it out. It must have room for those coffins that Nikolai mentioned though.

It is still early in the day, and there are many hours of bright sunlight available in which to do their work, once they decide on a course of action.

Michael takes a few steaks and put them in his belt. He scouts the entrance to the underground lair. He looks for alarms and traps both magical and mundane. he takes his time and does a thorough job of it.

once he is satisfied as to the security situation he puts a garland of garlic around his neck and gets a flask of holy water from Anna.

I think if anybody is going to cast protection from evil it aught to be once we get a bit farther in, if we can cast it right before contact...but we can't always get that lucky.

"Those hurt ones, may be to put out to be a threat until we find their coffins. My main concern at this point is straps and whatever guards they've set up. Vampires are known to be able to control certain insects, like spiders, and wolves. I want Michael, Tinker and I explore the first fifty feet or so of this tunnel. Anna, be ready to rush in if we need help. Trayvin, Sigvar and Pompous are Pru's bodyguards right now. Hopefully this won't take long, but I want to make sure we have room for Trayvin before we go much further."

With that, he takes two stakes and stuffs them in his belt, retrieves his silvered mirror and holds it in one hand, puts a garland of garlic around his neck, then motions to Michael.

Michael is determined not to be caught unawares again. He scouts the entrance thoroughly for traps, pitfalls, snares, nets, entanglements, pressure plates, loose stones, and other nasty surprises, but he finds none!

Sigvar is worried about his size causing a problem like it almost did down in the mines. He won't go in without a plan this time.

Tinker whittles and peers down the hole. Some light penetrates the first 10 feet or so, and nothing strange is visible in the darkness beyond.

Pru offers magical aid to any that request it and is ready to bring the fire.

Trayvin is adjusting his magical repertoire to deal with this new threat, hoping to use his magic in the most effective manner.

Anna offers up goods one more time, then prepares some magics to strengthen herself.

Nikolai takes charge of scouting the hole, going in with smokeless torch held high to give light to the trapfinders. Their senses don't find any traps. This hole appears to be natural, some sort of repurposed animal den perhaps. Towards the end of the light, it is already visibly widening into a larger space.

Unless there are objections, Pompous follow behind Nikolai about 10 meters behind. The ranger switched to his bow and notched an arrow at the ready. He plans on providing cover should an expeditious retreat be needed.

As the entrance way widens, Michael takes a position where he can back up his leader should trouble find them. his hands are filled with his blades and he stands ready to flank with his teammates. he looks around trying to spot anything that may give a clue of where the vamps are, What they are doing here, When they got here, Who they are, and how they operate and what kind of traps they may have laid for us.

It does well to be prepared, but if they were hoping for a fight, it doesn't look like the Agents will get their wish. The cavern opens up and the light of the torch is cast over a circle of 8 coffins. Scattered about the cavern are broken pieces of rock, and lettering is visible on the largest ones. By Sigvar's estimation, they are under approximately 15 feet of hillside.

Four of the coffins sit open and empty. The other four are closed.

does anybody have a dig spell? If we could get rid of this overburden we could pop the coffins right here and not risk waking them up. Or a couple of us could move them out one at a time. I'd hate to be holding onto one of the coffins when the bloodsucker wakes up though. I think we should try and get them all outside before we open them....that way in case one screams it won't wake the rest and them be in a position to mess with us. Of course we could also just pop a coffin, drive a steak through one's heart drag it outside, rinse and repeat till done. I'll tie the rest of the coffins shut, that way the others won't mess with us whatever we do.

with that Michael takes 50' of silk rope and begins to put a constrictor hitch around each of the coffins that is occupied. he is careful and tries to do it with the minimum of noise or jostling. unfortunately, he trips over a pot shard and sprawls on the floor.

Anna says to the others, "If all we need to clear is a 30 foot square I can pull a scroll of soften earth and stone from the bag of tricks and turn the wall into clay that we can hack away at. I could probably even turn into an Arsinotherium and just punch through the clay at that point. Otherwise I am not really sure what I can do with the earth."

Nikolai holds Tinker off on hacking and goes with Sigvars's suggestion of dragging the coffins into the sun. Michael ties them closed and using the rope and a confluence of muscle, they are able to drag the coffins out into the open.

The noise and vibration don't prompt any response from whatever may be inside the coffins. It seems that during the daytime, they are well and truly asleep.

Upon opening the coffin, the creature hisses slightly, but offers no resistance as the sun quickly melts it away. The process is easily repeatable for the others, and soon, nothing is left in the cave but empty coffins and large chunks of rock with covered in the strange symbols.

Nikolai is pleased at the efficiency of the team. If one were a gambling man, he'd open the coffins while in the darkness to test his luck. But Nikolai learned early on not to gamble with life. After all the vampire spawn are dispatched, he tries to remember how many there were that attacked them and why the empty coffins.

"Vampires and their spawn can't be dispatched for good unless done what we just did. It worries me that there are empty coffins. It has been known for vampires to have several coffins stashed here and there just for a case like this. It could be that the owners of the empty ones are resting in their spare coffins. Not that we can do anything about it at this point, but I thought it important to mention it so we continue to keep vigil against vampires. At least until we are far away from here," he comments.

Nikolai fishes into his backpack and finds that he is clean out of spare parchment sheets so he hands MIchael a map they used when looking for Neutronis and says, "Here Michael, use the backside of this map for your rubbing. Trayvin may be able to translate it but I want an original copy along with the written translation."

While that's being done, he helps look for treasure. There might be some hidden alcove in the cave and looks for it.

Once the coffins have been searched by Michael, he looks them over himself as he piles them outside the crypt then lights them on fire, so that no Vampire can use them as a 'spare' as Nickolai puts it. When their leader seems unsure they are all dead, Sigvar clarifies the fight last night for him.

" We faced eight intruders last night. I helped Tinker behead four and use the sun to burn them to ash this morning. With these four dead we should have killed all the ones we saw last night. If there were lurkers in the woods, well they might still be alive, but those that assaulted us are dead."

The spell quickly translates the strange symbols, turning random chunks of rock into what look to be headstones. None of the names are familiar, but oddly enough, all of them seem to begin with the letter 'Z'. Copies are taken anyway, for examination at a later time.

A more thorough search of the cave is perfored, and several items are turned up.

A chest is found in a corner, and As soon as the old, rotting box is opened, the light in the cave shines through the various gems: aquamarine, bloodstones, garnets, jade, peridot, red spinel, zircon, and more.

Another corner has a pile of items that look as if they have been discarded. There is a breastplate with a large wolf engraved on the front. There is a dusty longbow that looks quite worn and the string looks a bit frayed. There is a falchion with a worn wooden, smooth handle. A wooden shield is there that looks like it was made from planks of wood attached to one another. There is a dusty sword without a scabbard and a set of scale mail with smaller scales, showing quality craftsmanship.

Concealed behind some of the headstones is a pile of shinier items. There are four bright white arrows with white fletching on them in a pile. There is an old and used set of leather armor that… smells a bit… like it has been worn… a lot. There are two small glass containers that are shaped like flames. There is another plain vial with brown liquid in it. There are two additional leather bag-looking items that, when touched, show that they contain some liquid as well. There is a ring with an inscription on the outside that says, “PRO.” There are two old paper scrolls wrapped around one another. There is a wand that has two small shields on the ends of the wand. There is another wand that is jet black, looks burned, and has a tiny, bright, white tip on the end. The final wand is not smooth, but instead the wand itself feels like it has pebbles all along the length of it. The tips are worn, almost as if the wand has been used for digging.

Nikolai finds the way back to their trail, which is easily confirmed by Pompous, who had never lost his bearings at all.

Once the trail is resumed, it is a matter of another couple of quiet days of walking. please let me know if you plan to do anything on the trail - otherwise, I'll move this along.

The forest has been thinning as you travel, and eventually disappears altogether behind you. After breaking camp on the 3rd day of travel, it only takes a few hours more for the town to come into sight in the distance. As the Agents head towards the town, they come upon a closed carriage pulled by four horses moving along another road a little ways off, towards the town at roughly the same speed as they. Looking back on the other road, it appears to lead back towards some cliffs a short distance away. If you maintain your current speed, you should meet approximately where the roads join about mile outside of the first houses.

During the trip Sigvar speaks to Anna about producing chickens, feed and cages to contain them as gifts for Pru's sister and her husband to be. He figures that two good laying hens and a rooster should set the couple up fairly well and allow them to expand at their own pace. He asks if she can pull these from her bag when she is not in need of it's contents to keep them alive. He has gold ready to repay her whatever the cost might be.

Upon seeing the other carriage Sigvar quietly pulls and strings his bow, then lays it in the bed of the wagon with his quiver of arrows. He wants it ready, but not threatening. He tries to get a good look at the carriage. Is there any symbols or livery on it? If there is can he tell what the symbols are so he can describe them to some of the more knowledgeable in the group? Does the carriage appear to be military? Are they racing along or proceeding at a normal pace? Is the carriage in good repair and does it appear sound?

Fortunately things go well the rest of the way. He does not suspect anything unusual from the carriage, however Fist protocol requires preparedness nonetheless.

He looks for an escort and any identifiable emblems on the carriage when they are close enough.

She refills her bag of tricks daily as needed and says to her friends, "Let me know if you need me to pull gifts for Pru's sister from the bag of tricks. I'll do equivalent exchange for gold or an IOU for when you get gold."

The back of the wagon is getting quite full of gifts for the wedding. It's a good thing that there are so many attendees, else the sheer volume of gifts would look quite extravagant. Anna pulls as many threads as she likes, a bit fascinated by the colours she can imagine, and has more than a family seamstress could use in a year's time after spending a gold pieces worth of time extracting them from her bag.

Nikolai rides up and greets the driver. He responds pleasantly. "Well met, we are also bound to Twin Lakes."

Not having had contact with her family for some time before the note from her sister, Pru knows little of the town, the wedding, or even who the groom is. All she knows is what was in the note inviting her and her chosen compaions.

As Michael rides around the carriage, he notices that it is a bit odd compared to others that he has seen. Pompous notices this also, and despite his disinterest in the wedding, finds this bit interesting enough to mention.

Once pointed out, Sigvar gives it a look with his engineer's eye, but can't seem to place what exactly is different.

There are no distinguishing marks, but the carriage is very well constructed, and a trained eye can see that the crafting would not be cheap. They cannot see inside.

Nikolai glances at the horses pulling the carriage (how many?) and tries to determine their quality (Knowledge Nature +5 = 9) and the quality of their harnesses and gear (Appraise +1 = 13) to see if they are of nobility or just a wealthy person, maybe local magistrate or judge or some such type of official.

"Twin Lakes is not a very big place. Are you passing through or sticking around a while," he asks, fishing for their reason for going there. He does not want to divulge a wedding to strangers. It's not polite to go about blabbing about a party when you are a semi-invited guest.

Over the course of the trip, Anna also pulls 2 chickens, 2 cages, and 1 bag of feed for Sigvar. She also pulls a moonstone valued at 88.74 gp to add to the other things she is gifting them with as she doesn't know what to get the husband and a gem is a good as cash.

On another day after she refills the bag she also satisfies Pru's request. (let me know how much you want to spend; per art objects a decorated silver plate is 60 gp and an engraved silver bowl is 75 gp but IDK if you have a better idea of how much you want to spend)

That carriage keeps bugging him. The "unknowing" of where it's from makes him very curious. In addition to keeping watch on the team, he keeps an eye on it, trying to see who or what comes in or out of it.

All that the horses have to say is that they came from a place towards the cliffs where they are well stabled, fed, and groomed. The life is not terribly exciting, but it is an easy one for this team.

The driver chats pleasantly. "Oh I don't bother myself with details much. I just point the team where the Master says to go and I gets him there. Rain or shine, night or day."

But when Michael mentions the wedding, a panel slides open on the side of the carriage. You cannot see much inside other than a candle providing some light and some papers that are quickly shuffled away and out of sight. Michael only Highlight to display spoiler: {Make a will save vs DC 24 }

An elderly gentleman calls out to Michael. “Oh the Verity wedding! Indeed, I am headed there as well, as I am part of the family on the other side. It is my grandson, Zoonor, that is being wed! Is this not a wonderful day?”

Upon hearing the old man inside speak to Michael, Sigvar rests easier. This man is part of the groom's family, thus he should be alright, right? With the question of who Pru's sister is marrying and the occupants of the carriage resolved, Sigvar turns his thoughts to a nice Inn for the evening and a hot bath to clean away the grime of the road.

Pru listens to the woman in the carriage with a puzzled frown. The Verity wedding? she thinks. What an odd turn of phrase. "Verity's wedding" I would understand, or "the Gundle wedding," but....has Verity given up her family name? And who in the Wold is Zoonor? There was nobody in the village by that name.

Pru has a million questions, but it seems rude to just shove forward and start interrogating the old woman. So she merely says. "I am Verity's sister, Prudence."

'Ah, grandson. we represent the bride's family. Two parts of each family arriving together is a good omen, I'd think. Care if we join you and enter Twin Lakes together? Your carriage is probably faster than our wagon so you take the lead. My associate Pru and I can scout out the road ahead to insure its safe. Part of our Mailed Fist training. Never let your guard down."

He motions the wagon to fall in behind the carriage and motions for Pru he and Sigvar to move ahead 50 yards to scout the path. Meanwhile he motions Trayvin to take one side of the carriage and Anna the other and Pompous, Tinker, and MIchael make sure no threats pop up from the rear.

Once he's sure he's out of hearing he comments to Pru, "Your sister may be marrying up, it seems, and smiles.

Anna grabs a a decent bowl and plate worth 100 gold for Pru along the way. She also pulls a stilled scroll of grease (CL 3) and a scroll of Detect Undead (CL 2) before refilling the bag again.

Anna says to Nikolai, "Remember how we encountered the vampire spawn but we never found the master vampire? I happen to have pulled a scroll of detect undead from my bag of tricks. I'm not super familiar with Master Vampires, do you have an idea of what they might look like so I can have a clue about when it might be a good idea to start seeing if there is an undead nearby?"

Sigvar and Trayvin note only enough luggage for one well to do individual, though it could support two if they packed lightly. Only one voice is speaking.

The old man nods congenially to Pru. "We'll, miss. I look forward to being family with one so charming as you. "

Nikolai offers to scout ahead and commends pru's sister's choice of mate.

Anna prepares herself for an expected future encounter, and Pompous is ready for action, but finds no threats in the area.

Otherwise, it is a rather pleasant ride into town, and even more so for Michael, as the old man chats pleasantly with him riding alongside.

Michael chats the old man up, does he have any good stories? They trade stories as they travel. it makes the road go by faster and allows him to ask about what gifts might be appropriate for the bride and groom.

Nikolai wonders what the grandfather was earlier in life. Was he an ex-adventurer that accumulated an amount of wealth and stayed alive to enjoy it? Was he born into wealth and was just a landlord? A successful merchant maybe?

"Well, Anna, Master Vampires can look like anyone. They do tend to gather wealth over their long undead life spans and like fineries as much as any noble. How to tell them apart from anyone else? Well, you'll not find them out in the sunlight, that's for sure! HA! but they can travel during the day if they are well concealed from the sun, even if it is very dangerous. In any case, they have to return to their coffin so it either travels with them or has already been moved ahead to its next destination.

Their skin may reveal themselves too it if is too pale. I'm just as experienced in this as you, since reading about them and meeting them for reals are two different things."


When they enter town he says to Pru, "Go meet your family while we arrange a place to stay. If the wedding guests have taken up all available space, we'll just camp outside of town. Once we find a place, maybe Anna can send a bird to show you where we end up."

Thus he starts looking for an inn and asks several citizens where the best inn is.

Anna goes off with Nikolai as he goes to question the townfolk continuing to press him about Master Vampires once out of earshot of the carriage "So if a Master Vampire was out during the day, they would be found in say a richly appointed carriage, potentially? Like the one our new friend rolled up in? I mean maybe I'm just being paranoid but after the dragon, the wisps, the swamp monsters and that witchy undead woman getting the drop on us, I'd rather be jumpy than not at this point. Should I use my scroll of detect undead on the carriage just to know for sure or should I save it?" Anna asks her leader

"Let's wait on that scroll for now and see if he gets out of the carriage during the day. If we don't get a view of him in plain daylight, then we can try the scroll. I'm like you, a little paranoid. If indeed he is the grandfather, that should be easily verified once we meet the groom, right?" Nikolai grins.
