Home at Last!

The group approaches the citadel and Pru is glad to be there. Sigvar prepares to head off to find some aid, but he finds that the fire has actually been fading a bit, and he doesn't feel as sick as he did. In fact, as time continues, the effect fades more and more until he cannot even really see the flames, except occasionally here and there, and he doesn't feel sick any more (condition removed!).

The group continues to the gate as the sun continues to set. It is evening now and everyone is quite tired from the trip across the uneven ground. As they approach the gate, and visions of resting inside the citadel dance in your heads, the guard comes to attention and looks carefully. He calls out, "Hoy! Thumb Pru? We were told to watch out for you. Knight Commander Palance wants to see you the moment you return."

Sigvar actually stops and looks at Michael when the halfling comments.
" I have to say that you are wrong. One bad rumor will not destroy the Fist, and the Citadel is our home. Why do I think no rumor could stop us? Agents like you. Your Thumb was accused of a murder. The accusation had no merit, and could have destroyed the Fist, causing us to be labeled as murderers all. But insted you all went to the town where the charge was and faced it, honorably. When the folk saw that the accusation was without merit, it was dismissed and you were publicly exonerated. That is what it takes to maintain this force, this family. That too is why I wanted to become an Agent."

Tinker looks up at the imposing structure, listens to Sigvar, and smiles. "Yes. We are Home."

He marches straighter, with more swing, and falls in with Prudence to go to the Commander's office.

I hope and pray that you are right Sigvar, Michael says as they pass through gate guards, but I know and curse the evil nature of man, and the ease by which evil can take root. If you look at how we, the very troops who saved that miserable Asildurian cesspit were treated by them, you might think a bit differently. we, their saviors and the Heros of the day now have to pay those thieving bas...folk...100,000 gp per year in perpetuity. The one thing I've learned and learned well is that gold is king. you never see a poor man rule a nation, and rich men don't have to wait. Those Clerics of FFoy are probably getting their share off the top of the Danegeld we have to pay. Honor is the gift you give yourself, you can't wear it, other people can't see it and to spend it you have to lose it. There are only two things most people respond to predictably. violence and gold, and sadly it usually brings out the worst in folk.

Nikolai listens to Sigvar's story and Michael's reply. There was nothing to add so he remains quiet and enjoys the scenery. To him, it was much more enjoyable crawling through woods than following a road and he takes full advantage of it.

The Citadel was a comforting sight. When he saw it last he knew not his fate. He still doesn't, but at least he feels he as a bit more control. At least until the word that his Commander wants to see them even before they've had a time to shower.

"Pru, lead the way. Let's not keep the Commander waiting," he tries to grin.

The group heeds the guard’s advice and quickly heads to the office of the knight commander. When they arrive, despite the late hour, they find the knight commander sitting at her desk, reading some papers. As the group enters the office, she sets the papers down and rubs her eyes.

She nods to the group and says, “It is good to have you back here. I have heard good things from messengers from Sandhill Crossing. I am quite glad to hear of your success. Your success is success for the Fist.” She pauses and takes a deep breath before continuing, “Nikolai, you are re-assigned as thumb. I am sorry that your command had to be taken from you, but I hope that you understand. We are still working on our reputation and we must be as clear and fair as we can be, even to those who would detract from us.”

“I wish that I had time to give you all a break, but that is not to be yet. Hopefully soon there will be time to rest. However, there has been more information revealed related to that incident in the library. The librarians have been researching and have discovered more information. We do not have time tonight to deal with it, but first thing tomorrow morning you are all to report to the outdoor meeting hall for more information about this event. You are dismissed until that time.”

Note: The outdoor meeting hall is usually used for announcements and public events. It is an open area, open on three sides, the final side up against the wall of the citadel. There is a light canvas-type cover to keep the sun out and there are rows of benches there, so anyone can join in. It has many uses: sometimes plays are presented there, while other times public court is held there.

Tinker nods and salutes. It IS late, they ARE tired, and, conveniently, their apartments are in the same tower as the Knight Commander.

It takes a bath, some food, and settling into the new bed before Tinker starts thinking about where the meeting is going to be tomorrow. Nah, he trusts Commander Constance, the Agents are part of the team. There is no way she would blindside the team.

Comforted, he goes to sleep without a care in the world.

The next morning is up and raring to go. A fresh uniform, a good breakfast, and a stretching exercise, and Saemae Torvalsson is ready to stand with the Agents once more.

Michael is in too dark of a mood to look deeper into what his commander isn't saying. He drops his gear off at his room then goes for a bath. once the bath is done, he cleans his equipment and writes up his field notes for the mission. He's tired but he perseveres till he is done. he puts his things away sets up his hide and tell tells then snuggles down beneath his bed on his pillow. As he begins to drift off he hears the voice of one of his old thumbs in is mind. Men, Mission, Me. While he commands no men at the moment, one day, this assignment will be over and the habits he cultivates now will serve him well later on.

When morning comes Michael awakes ravenous! He grabs a towel and runs over to the mess hall to grab a quick bite to eat, some bread with sausage , egg, bacon and cheese between the slices, and trots over to the ampitheater to catch the skinny on what's up. he wraps the towel around shoulders to keep from getting his uniform soiled and to give him something to wipe his hands on. He's through with his meal and has the towel stowed in a pocket by the time he reaches the meet point.

Trayvin isn't quite sure what to make of the Commander's orders. But they were home now, time for some rest and food. He had no doubt the morning would bring a new mission for the Agents.

The old Anna had been more perceptive when it came to things but new Anna was more of a projector than a receptor. She doesn't realize anything additional from the Commander's remarks or body language (OOC: not even bothering to roll b/c DC above her ability) and happily leaves Palance's quarters.

She too heads off for a bath, some grub and then rest. Before she goes to bed that night she makes sure to spend some time polishing her armor and then grabs a freshwater (irregular) pearl from her bag of tricks worth the remainder of the gold she poured into it.

The next morning she makes sure to pour 300 gold coins into the bag of tricks and then heads down to the mess hall to grab some biscuits that she cuts apart and loads with sausage, egg and cheese giving her some sandwiches. She then cleans up and dons her armor before falling in at the outdoor meeting hall.

(OOC: do I have to get rid of the 2 gems I pulled from the bag so far at the catacombs, do I have to roleplay selling them or can I just turn them back into cash?)

Sense Motive + 7 = 20

In his mind Nikolai nearly shouts 'No Fair! Giving me back command before Pru writes the report and now I have to? No Fair!', but outwardly he salutes the Commander and says "Yes Sir! As you wish, Sir."

Outside as they leave he chuckles and gives Pru a big hug.
"You did a marvelous job Pru,"[/b[
He turns to all of them and gives each one a hug too, even Sigvar, as best he can.

[b]"I had thought that the job of Thumb would rotate so that each one could get the experience of Leadership. Truthfully, I had hoped that the Commander would appoint another for a while. It was quite fun not to carry the decision making burden for a while. But alas I have it back.
First order of business is to thank each one of you for a job superbly done. A round of drink of your choice at the Last Assignment is on me when next we meet there,"
he grins.

As they walk up to their rooms they find out that a room has been made for their new member, Sigvar. As he gets settled in, Nikolai tells him the story of the library's book monster and how it nearly tore up the library. They had to lure it outside before they could destroy it lest they imperil the whole library.

'I guess that's what this is all about. We'll know for sure tomorrow. May your rest be peaceful," he finishes and heads to his own room.

"I thought I'd never see you again," he says as he enters and heads towards his desk. First thing is to write a letter to his father telling him what happened while it was fresh on his mind. Then the official report for the Commander. Just as he runs out of ink he finishes. Too tired to take a bath, he puts that off for the morning before breakfast.

He reports to the outdoor meeting hall with the others.

"Yes, ma'am," Pru says, all but sagging in relief. Nikolai is Thumb again! Pru doesn't have to be responsible for everybody anymore!

"Er. ma'am, I should probably mention--Nikolai's trial seems to be part of a larger pattern of--I guess you could say harassment? We're not sure who's behind it or what they want, but I'm pretty sure they're not finished. And I don't think they could strike at us in the Citadel, but you never know. We'll get you a full report tomorrow, but in the meantime, I just wanted to let you know."

Dismissed, she heads for quarters with her Fist-mates, glad for a chance of a bath and a rest, even if tomorrow will bring fresh challenges.

Sigvar is beat. It's all fun and games in a fight when you are bigger than a horse, quite another matter when the others can ride and you need to hoof it. When they are dismissed he touches his tattoo again and heals himself for 4 damage. He takes the room appointed to him and after his armor is off falls dead asleep.
Up at dawn he hits the training yard and goes thrugh his sword forms. His mother had insisted that he do this every morning before the rest of the Fist awoke, and old habits die hard. After his work out he gets cleaned up, gets some grub and heads to this meeting, in full kit

The group relaxes as Nikolai takes charge once again. Pru tells a bit about the harassment to Palence, she nods, and the group heads out. Everyone makes preparations for the night. Along with Sigvar’s rack, there is another rack in the area that looks like it was hastily tossed there for some reason. That’s not all that uncommon, though you’re not sure why it would be there. As the group is preparing for sleep, a small boy arrives and sticks his head in the room. He says, “Message for Sir Nikolai?” When someone takes the paper, he quickly scampers off before anyone can question him.

The paper is folded and not signed. It is a simple scrawled note that says, “Be careful. Something is not right here.”

The next morning the sun rises bright and the day is clear. Many head off to breakfast and Sigvar does some training in the yard. When the group gathers and heads towards the outdoor meeting hall, you notice a small crowd has started to gather. Knight commander Palence is in full dress regalia and standing at the front of the space. She is speaking with a man in robes that looks like one of the librarians you had seen before your adventures to Sandhill Crossing.

Trayvin enjoys a morning meal and joins the rest of the Agents at the parade field. "This can't be good. Too formal, especially after the extremely light debriefing we got last night."

Sigvar makes it to the meeting and doesn't look that ready for action. He is in his full kit, but is sweating now more than he had been either on the hike off road or after the exertion of combat. He appears distracted and small things seem to bother him far more than you had seen previously.
" Looks like a big deal. What are we supposed to learn here today again?"

Tinker, fresh face and fresh uniform, attends the meeting with the others. He and the Agents are home, they are safe, the dwarf has no thoughts that anything could be different.

The night before with the additional bedding, Tinker looks around to see the new Agent. The team is in a suite of rooms in the Knight Commander's own Tower. Anyone in this suite, thinks Tinker, must have been assigned to he team, and he is eager to meet the new teammate

Anna was in such a rush to grab breakfast, get cleaned up and join the gathering that she didn't realize how bad she actually felt until she got to the meeting hall.

She hurts all over from her head to her joints and her forehead is warm to the touch. She feels weak, less coordinated, her nose is stuffed and her ears are clogged and will not pop. She also looks flushed and is moving a little slower than normal.

She keeps a safe distance from the other members of the Fist and says to Trayvin, "I think I caught something from swamp thing. Do you have remove disease prepared?"

Nikolai notices the new cot but no one seems to occupy it for now. The message was not what he expected either but he shrugged as these things are becoming pretty common lately. He passes on the information to all the others and suggests each one keep an extra sharp eye out. "Look, it could be that whoever is behind this just wants to make us paranoid and do something stupid or rash. But we can't ignore it either."

Next morning, after breakfast, Nikolai readies himself for the meeting. As meetings go, he didn't expect anything all that formal. On the other hand, his eyes probe here and there, looking for anyone he does not recognize.

Perception +14 (looking for strange faces and uneasiness in those faces) = 27

Noticing Anna's standoff-ishness, he calls to her, "Anna, what's the matter? Get over here with us. You're acting like you got the plague."

Information about the paper library monster. This should be really interesting. He pays very close attention.

Pru is up early enough for breakfast, and by the time she heads off for the meeting, she is neat and tidy in appearance as is her wont. Her long braid swings behind her as she catches up to her Fist-mates.

"Hang in there, Anna," she says. "We'll take you to the infirmary after this, and I'm sure they'll get you all fixed up."

Michael was early to the meeting, he stands around unobtrusively and watches as everyone gathers. Something seems off, Anna seems sick and the new guy Sigvar seems a bit off as well. Not to mention the Knight commander is dressed to the nines. As is his want, he watches and listens as the crowd gathers, then quietly moves to stand beside his Fist as they begin to arrive. He is aware of most things, but interpretation of interpersonal communication mostly eludes him.

Trayvin is a bit nervous as the group arrives at the meeting hall. Sigvar, looks around, irritated, at the hall as well. Tinker is glad to be home and safe. Anna joins the group and stays a bit away from the others, hoping someone can cure her disease. Pru tells her that they will head to the infirmary after the meeting. Nikolai looks around the crowd and sees that there are many he does not know – most of the crowd appear to be from the town and he wonders if it would improve relations with the Fist if he started getting to know more of the people of the town. Michael observes the area and the people as well, but he sees nothing out of the ordinary – though since he has not really participated in many meetings here in the town, he is not quite sure what “ordinary” might be.

Eventually, Palence takes up a position behind the podium. The crowd gets quiet and people start to take their seats. Without waiting for everyone Palence starts speaking, “Today, we are to address the recent issues in the library. As many of you know, there was a paper golem of sorts that managed to infiltrate the library.” A few people gasp as Palence quickly continues, “The situation was dealt with quickly by the Fist, but we do want to assure you good people that we are taking this seriously. We are having this open session to show you that we have nothing to hide and that you will be safe with the Fist here and around you. The Fist is on your side.”

“Today we would like to address these issues as best we can in an open forum for all to see. I would first ask that Prudence Gundle come forward to give an account of the situation that day in the library.”

She steps aside of the podium. People start looking around to identify Pru. At this point, nearly everyone is seated. It looks to be a calm affair. There are a couple guards here and there, looking bored. There are a few people slowing as they pass by to look in and see what’s happening in the meeting hall. There are about 20 people seated in the audience rows. There are a group of 5 people to the side of the stage, standing behind Palence. At least two of them are recognizable as librarians.

Note for Trayvin: Yes, Trayvin could have healed injuries last night. The sicknesses that have appeared were not visible last night at all, sorry.

As Pru moves to make the statement, Trayvin whispers to Anna. "Sorry, I don't. I didn't know anyone was affected that way. If the infirmary can't take care of it today, I will try it tomorrow."

Tinker understands, this is a chance for the Agents to do another non-standard mission; this one is talking to people and get them on the Fist's side. "Must be local leaders from nearby villages", murmurs the dwarf, but that's all he says. Tinker stands and acts like the strong subordinate that he is. It is for others to convince people!

Michael frowns at Palence's statement. "we are in the citadel, the fists home, surrounded by fist soldiers and others of the fist. who's she trying to reassure?" sure civilians come and go, but the affairs of the fist should not be their concern. Strange. still he keeps his own counsel and listens, she may be angling for something here...

Sigvar has seen Prudence be unsure of herself, but honestly, with her reputation among the troops he isn't sure why.
" Go win them to our cause. Remember, you are well known to the troops in the Fist. Stories of your Fist's exploits and yours in particular are an inspiration to those around you. Most magically inclined soldiers fold under the pressure of the enemy advancing on them. I saw you with those Wisps, you don't. Use that. Don't worry about those you don't know in the crowd, concentrate on us. Let us be your anchor. You are a respected soldier. Tested, and veteran. Go tell them what it is we do and how they are the better for it. Knock them dead."
Sigvar feels far less confident than he sounds. Right now a long soak in a scalding tub are what he wants to ease the aches and fever he feels. There is no reason to show that weakness though. Project what you want the enemy to see and they will see what you show then.
Perception 25.
Sigvar looks over the crowd, watching for potential trouble. If he sees any he will first nudge Tinker and nonchalantly point it out, then follow the Dwarf's lead. Tinker seems to be pretty level headed and will know what to do.

Pru takes a deep breath and steps up to the podium. She turns to face the assembled crowd. Flower's Love, but there are a lot of people here! Pru reminds herself that she knows most of them. She takes another deep breath.

"Good morning," she says, smiling at the throng. "This was several weeks ago. My Fist-mates and I," she waves her hand to where the others are sitting, "were coming from Captain Palance's office when we heard a disturbance from the library. We went over there, and heard the librarians calling for help, so we went in. The place was a mess. Shelves and tables were knocked over, and the librarians were trying to hide. And in the back of the library was this big--thing, like a man, but made of paper. One of the librarians said he'd opened a book and the thing had just--burst out. Anyway, we helped the librarians to safety, and fought the paper thing. Ordinary weapons weren't much use, but we had enough magic to defeat it. It sort of collapsed into a pile of loose paper."

She stops, and looks at Captain Palance. "That's basically it, unless there's something you wanted me to describe further, ma'am?"

Anna gives Pru a weak thumbs up as her sister in arms goes to take the podium. For a second there Anna considered turning herself into Pru and taking the stage herself as Pru did seem a little uncertain but Palence's words about transparency giver her pause and she isn't sure if the 5 minute duration of the SLA would be enough. She is a little annoyed that a scroll of remove disease is beyond the power of her bag of tricks to produce as right now she just wants to be either magically healed or go to bed and curl up in a ball. She keeps her composure though for now and listens as Pru addresses the crowd.

Nikolai is pleased with Pru's account. It was direct and to the point. The Agent's power and tactics was seen to those inside so no point in detailing that for all ears. Nikolai remembers how Pru felt frustrated that her major power, fire, was the best answer but inside the library would have been disastrous, more so than the rampaging paper golem. He remembered how each member, Tinker, Michael, he, and so forth, took turns standing their ground while the others fell back a short ways, then turning to fall back, and so forth, thus luring it outside where they could finally put some fire to it.

He grinned at how that teamwork worked perfectly. He restrains the urge to clap at Pru's presentation and awaits what Commander Palance has next.

Pru steps forward and carefully tells her story. When she is done, Palence nods and steps back up to the podium. She addresses the crowd and says, “The Fist has investigated the source of the monster in the library. It was discovered that the monster was placed in the library through a book that was donated and not fully checked. After further investigation, the source of that donation was located.”

She turns to the librarians and steps back from the podium again and gestures for them to take up a position at the podium. The librarian hesitates and Palence gestures again towards the podium. The librarian slowly moves towards the podium…

Sigvar's head is pounding and he would like nothing more than to return to his rack and try to sleep this sickness away. But the librarian hesitating to speak snaps him awake. Librarians are book people. They thrive on learning and speaking. Why would this one be hesitant to speak. Afraid for his life for what he is about to say? Maybe, but if he was Fist then unlikely. Afraid of someone he was about to mention running and getting away? Maybe, and more likely.

OOC: since we all entered as a group and tend to stick together, I'm putting Nikolai in the center isle, 3rd bench and the rest can either occupy the adjacent seats and the row behind or anywhere else you want.

IC: Nikolai takes a seat at N14 and greets the civilian siting next to him. A casual conversation with him/her is interrupted by the commander as the proceedings start.

He simultaneously notices when Sigvar gets up to leave, hard not to, and the hesitation of the librarian spokesperson. In his experience, librarians are the secluded bookish types that hate public appearances, much less speaking in public. Now he has to address the massive crowd of some 20 civilians and some odd Mailed Fist members that happen to have nothing to do at the moment.

Sigvar and Anna get up and head to the edge of the tent for some air. There is a light breeze outside, but it is getting warm as the sun continues to rise in the sky. Nikolai takes a seat in the middle of the room and starts up a conversation with a woman seated there. Tinker plops down next to him. The woman is nicely dressed, perhaps a merchant in the town. When he glances around, he notices the guard to his right seems a bit nervous as his hand strays to his weapon. Michael takes a seat in the front row and watches the librarian as she approaches the podium. She looks very nervous and Michael can see she is openly sweating. It is not THAT warm here in the outdoor meeting hall.

Trayvin sits towards a side and tries to talk to the man seated near him, next to another woman. The man shrugs when questioned and then everyone’s attention is focused on the librarian. The librarian looks over at Palence, who gives her an encouraging nod. Then she looks over at Pru in the corner. She speaks quietly, but fortunately the meeting hall has some magical amplification from the podium. She says, “The book came from her,” she points at Pru, “from Prudence.”

There is a collective gasp from the audience and all eyes look at Pru at the front of the room. One of the other librarians points at the librarian at the podium and screams, “No! She lies!” The librarian at the podium looks down and starts crying. She looks over at Pru and whispers, “I’m sorry.” People in the crowd start talking now and Palence moves up to the podium. She speaks to the woman quietly, but the amplification picks up their conversation clearly:

“Is this really true? Did you get the book from Pru?”

The woman whimpers, then whispers, “No.”

As there is another gasp from the crowd, the woman near Trayvin stands up and yells, “Noooooo!” She then points at the librarian at the podium. A familiar green bolt flies from her fingertips and slams into the librarian. There is an explosion of green fire and flames as the woman and Palence are knocked to the ground, bathed in a green glow! Everyone in the audience jumps to their feet!

Tinker also jumps up. What's going on!? The green ray attracts the dwarf like nothing else. He pauses to touch his chest and give himself Expedious Retreat.

And then he launches himself towards the woman who cast the green ray, drawing his dagger as he dodges around the crowd. Even if he can't reach her, maybe he can distract the caster with a well-timed bellow. "WITCH!!! FACE YOUR DEATH!!!"

Sigvar bursts into action. The swamp monsters may have given him this ailment, but he blamed her. He moves diagonally around the right side of the row as Tinker comes from her left. As he passes the guard he says to the man, " Get these civilians clear, that fire will crisp them like sausages.The Agents have this."

Moving at a hustle he rounds the corner and comes up behind her, not quite close enough to reach her. Double move to O,P/2,3 Draw his sword if he can, I am assuming his shield would be on his arm.

I am assuming the benches count as difficult terrain. How high is the top of this tent and what material is it made of? does she appear insubstantail this time?

Spells in effect: Mage Armor

The Agents spring into action at the revelation that the witch is in their midst. It is incredulous that this woman would do such a thing right in front of... everyone.

However, as those thoughts race through his mind there is also the realization that this woman does not work alone. There must be others here to support her. That's the way it was out on the road and more likely here also!

Nikolai catches a glimpse of Anna reenter the tent as he starts scanning the meeting hall and makes the motions of two fingers to his eyes and then a circle around his head.

Next he casts his Magic Fang spell and moves to stand upon the bench at K15.

He scans the room as best he can to spot anyone behaving unusual, guards, civilians, or even a librarian. That is, anyone making a move against the Agents, librarians, or the Captain.

Chaos erupts in the meeting hall. The meeting hall is mostly open to the air – at least on three sides. The rear of the hall is the wall of the citadel, but the other sides are open to the town. The cover of the hall is held up by tall wooden pillars and it is thick canvas so it is a semi-permanent structure. The highest point of the canvas ceiling is about 25 feet, but it is closer to 10 feet at the edges.

Tinker jumps up and focuses on the green ray he recognizes. He casts a spell on himself and starts towards the now obvious, beautiful woman. He yells at the woman, calling her a witch and screaming about her death. His voice is just another in the room that is now filled with screaming people as he runs towards her and towards Trayvin as Trayvin manages to get to his feet while pulling out his weapon and casting a spell himself. Beyond them, a hooded man stands up and fire three arrows. The arrows miss, one striking the bench and a second embedding itself in the podium! At the same time, Michael takes off at a run towards the woman. He throws his weapons to the ground and prepares to dive at her feet. Just before he reaches her, he runs into a large, armored guard. The guard hits Michael with his sword as he blocks him from reaching the woman (9 damage). Michael finds himself standing in front of the armored guard while now completely unarmed.

Near the rear of the hall, Anna steps inside and pulls out a scroll, preparing for battle. Sigvar moves quickly around the side, ready to attack the woman from behind. He quickly draws his sword and starts around the guard. As he gives instructions to the guard, he suddenly feels a massive pain in his side. As he looks down, the guard takes another swipe at him, striking him a second time with his sword (33 damage!)

At the front of the hall, Pru rushes on the stage to help the commander and the librarians. When she arrives, she casts haste, but Michael has already moved beyond her, so she can only cover herself and the group at the stage. She finds that the commander is semi-conscious at the moment, but appears to not be seriously injured, though she is burned. The librarian with her has been burned severely and is clearly dead. Nikolai moves from one bench to the next, scanning the area. He is quick to spot the two guards that have attacked Michael and Sigvar. As he casts his spell, he watches the civilians quickly start to scatter.

The woman laughs and looks over as Tinker and Trayvin rush towards her. She points at the yelling Trayvin and a bolt of the green flame flies from her fingertips. The bolt slams into Trayvin with massive power, almost knocking him to the ground with the force (29 damage). The green flames quickly engulf him as well (Will save, DC 22 or you glow in green flames and obtain the sickened condition). A moment later, Nikolai feels a heated blast fly past his head and suddenly there is a massive explosion of fire. You don’t need to know spellcraft to recognize the massive fireball explosion in the tent. The fireball is centered just behind the group rushing the woman, so Michael, Trayvin, Tinker, Nikolai, and two of the civilians are caught in the blast (Reflex save, DC 17 or 34 fire damage, save for half). Anna: Highlight to display spoiler: {You are the only one in position to notice the source of the fireball – the guard at H23!}. Special note to Trayvin: if you failed the will save, the green flames surrounding you increase the damage of the fireball to 51 or 25 with a save.

The guard that hit Michael had a readied action. Sigvar: normally you could only draw and move OR double move, not both. In this case, I’m going to guess you would have attempted the draw and move halfway there (otherwise you would be a sitting duck, still without a weapon drawn).

Sigvar took 27 damage after DR from my armor. It sounded like 2 hits. Please do not neglect to mention if this DR does not apply, such as an adamantite weapon negating it. Sigvar is one of the few (but not only) Agent that can walk around butt naked and still be fully armed thanks to the horns on his head. He is around the corner though so that means he can charge this round if needed. Can you box or bold the squares that he occupies so I know which 4 he is in? Remember he is large.

Were those guards wearing Fist colors? I assumed they were otherwise it would have been suspicious.

Sigvar sees Michael in trouble, faced by an armed soldier and unarmed himself. The Minotaur want's to help him but has problems of his own. A fair amount of his blood is leaking from his wounds and that guard is NOT on their side. Rounding on the guard the Minotaur does the only thing he can, try to put the man down fast to minimize the damage.

Sword 1 hits AC 12 natural 1 so miss
Shield hits AC 24 for 5 damage also initiating a bull rush that beats CMD 24

Tinker growls, his hope that HE would be shot by the green flames foiled, but then a fireball erupts behind him and, distracted, the normally nimble dwarf takes the full force of the spell!

Tinker sees Michael needs a distraction, and so jumps in front of the guard menacing the halfling (hopefully allowing Michael to retrieve his weapons unobstructed). The dwarf's dagger slices (since at a public meeting, Tinker didn't bring his urgrosh nor crossbow)

Sigvar stops and turns to attack the guard that has sliced into him. He manages to hit the guard with his shield, but the guard pushes the shield to the side to avoid the bull rush maneuver. Sigvar is indeed feeling the illness. As he moves the shield to the side, he strikes at Sigvar, missing once, but hitting him once in the head (10 damage).

Nearby, the hooded man continues to fire arrows at the woman. One arrow appears to go right through her, but two others strike her, then fall to the ground. Pru has an unobstructed view of the woman, steps forward and casts a spell at her. The black ray’s aim is off and the ray harmlessly hits the dirt near the woman. The woman spots the black ray and laughs again. She cries out, “Victory is mine!” as she looks over the smoking bodies. She points at Pru and another green bolt appears, slamming into Pru (20 damage, Will save, DC 22 or you glow in green flames and obtain the sickened condition).

Anna points out the caster that sent the fireball, then moves quickly around the fleeing civilians. Michael, realizing he is in trouble without his weapons, quickly backs up to retrieve them. As he does so, Tinker moves quickly around the fallen body of Trayvin to confront the guard. He slashes with his dagger, but the guard slaps it aside and slashes back with his own sword, missing once, but striking Tinker in the shoulder (8 damage).

Nikolai leaps off the bench and takes off at the spellcasting guard (the other bench is in the way of a full charge). And slams into her hard. She shakes off the stun attempt and starts casting a spell, but she moves to avoid Nikolai and her spell fails (failed at casting on defensive)!

The guard manages to get around Sigvar's shield again, drawing a thin ine of blood across the Minotaur's wrist. This is not looking so good. Trayvin is down and the rest of the Agents are clumping up to protect him, setting them all up for the killing fireball. Nickolai is on top of the caster, let's hope he can put that guard down fast.
When all seems grim the guard in front of Sigvar sprouts a pair of arrows in his chest. Odd, none of the Agents had displayed bow use as a skill in the previous fight. Then Sigvar notices the hooded man firing into the enemies. He doesn't know who that person is but he is sure thankful for him. He turns back to his job and then really feels the effects of the sickness kick in. He whiffs, not just missing but completely swinging wide of the mark, four times.

Anna moves quickly to Trayvin as Michael passes her a potion. She grabs the potion and quickly prepares to use it on Trayvin. Then Michael slips around the benches and to the other side of the guard. As he does so, Tinker points him out to the guard, then slashes into him as he turns, striking once hard. The guard grunts and slashes back at Tinker, drawing a good deal of blood from his side (15 damage).

Sigvar is distracted by the arrows and he sees two more arrows slam into the guard. Apparently the pretty colors on the arrows are enough to make Sigvar miss… again and again and again. The guard tries to laugh, but ends up spitting some blood from the arrow damage instead. He shakes his head and presses his attack on Sigvar with the same goal as the others, to quickly negate a threat so he can focus on others. Apparently the arrows are so shiny they distract him as well, as his swings do not even make contact with Sigvar.

Meanwhile, Nikolai steps to the side and starts hitting the other guard. He punches to stun, but it does not bother her. He continues punching her and beating her, and eventually she drops to the ground in a heap. Pru continues to throw black rays of energy all around the room, everywhere but at her actual target. The witch laughs again and again throws another of her green bolts at Pru and it hits her solidly in the chest (17 fire damage). The woman laughs some more and screams, sounding if she is in pain, “Today the Fist ends! Slartanus, where are you!?!”

As the guard looks toward him he slips his rapier up into his chest, the point deflects off a rib and does not go as deep as he would have planned, His short sword finds the crack in the man's Faulds and pierces up through his groin, between his pelvic girlde and up into his abdomen, as he withdraws the blade a gush of blood follows it out.

The guard lays unconscious at Nikolai's feet. Glancing around he notices the rest of the action. He's seen his friends get hurt before and figures that once Trayvin gets back on his feet, he'll try to heal them. His mind quickly judges the distance between him and Trayvin. Well over 50 feet it seems, far enough away to be out of any healing surge from the cleric.

He also notices for the first time the hooded archer. His or her arrows are aimed at the witch. An unexpected ally. A Fist member? or just a warrior that just happened to be so bored he or she stopped to watch the proceedings?

The witch is the priority and seems to be dueling with Pru. She needs someone in front of her to cover her spellcasting. He rushes to her side. From there he'll decide what to do next, but at least he can provide her some protection if that guard with Tinker and Anna decides to hop the bench and attack her.

Take double move (80') and end up at G8.

Sigvar presses the attack on guard #2. He manages to hit him with the shield and shove him back. As expected, the guard steps forward again and Sigvar misses the extra opportunity to hit him. Two more arrows slam into him from the hooded man and he staggers a bit but still manages to get his axe around Sigvar’s shield, hitting him again in the shoulder (10 damage).

Anna provides healing for Trayvin, then moves up to confront the now nearly surrounded guard. She makes a feeble attempt at an attack, but the guard sees her coming and slips out of her way. As he does, Michael slices deeply into him at the same time Tinker slips the dagger in just the right spot. He wonders about the name “Slartanus” and remembers that was the name of the green dragon the group had fought what seems like months ago. The guard slips off the dagger and onto the ground.

Trayvin struggles to his feet and heals himself to the point where he doesn’t quite feel dead any more. A the same time Pru sends some magic missiles towards the woman and they slam into her with full force. Nikolai draws his weapon, leaves the body of the guard, and rushes to Pru’s side. As he does so, the woman looks out the sides of the meeting hall towards the skies and calls out again, “Slartanus, we had a deal! Come and destroy the Fist today with me!” The then looks over at Michael and reaches out her her hand. A small black ray flies forth and hits him in the head (Michael: Fort Save DC 18. On failure, take 6 strength damage, on success, take 3 strength damage).

Nikolai hears the ghostly witch call out the name 'Slartanus' again and look towards the skies outside the tent. Whoever she's made a deal with Nikolai intends to spare him/her/it the necessity to ante up. With G1 now down and not going to threaten Pru, he rushes towards the ghostly witch and leaps upon the bench and next to Anna, intending to keep a good line of sight between Pru and their foe.

If needed, Acrobatics check to fight while standing on the bench:

The bench must have had some blood splatter and it's slippery surface causes him to miss miserably.

Sigvar grunts as he misses his chance to score a telling blow. He see's the second guard slump to the ground and feels the blade of his opponent find his shoulder.

" Two down, just the boss and you left. Doesn't look like he ally she is expecting is coming either. You know what happened to the animals she used against us on the road right? She left them for dead. One survived because one of my Fist won't kill animals unless they leave her no choice. You have a choice to make. Stand down and live, or I or one of my shield brothers will end you. Better alive and captured than dead. Drop the axe and surrender."

The ray hits Michael and he feels his strength go, he smiles as he switches over to flank the witch against Anna, As he works his blades in and out of her incorporeal form he shouts "Hey Nick, Wasn't Slartanus that green dragon we drove off a few days ago? His rapier passes though a where her belly button should be, but he feels some resistance as his short sword cuts into her thigh.

Anna and Nikolai rush towards the woman, but neither manages to land a blow while Pru blasts her again with more magic missiles. Meanwhile, Sigvar and the hooded man continue their attacks on the remaining guard. While the arrows miss, Sigvar tries to talk to the man. When he does not immediately surrender, Sigvar slams him with his shield. The guard falls back and crumples to the ground.

Tinker steps back, trying to talk to the witch about Slartanus while Travin quickly heals him. Michael continues his vicious assault on the woman and she screams as he slices into herm but he can tell his weapons aren’t doing the damage he expects (incorporeal). As he strikes her, the green flames flow from her body and towards Michael (will save DC 22 or you are covered with the green flames and gain the sickened condition). She responds by reaching out and touching Michael with a bolt of flame (23 fire damage, if you made the first save, save a second time, same conditions).

Nikolai notices that hitting the ghostly witch is a dangerous affair in itself, but what are the options? What puzzles him most, though, is that the young dragon Slartanus would entertain the prospect of hopping right in the middle of the Mailed Fist Citadel for a fight that includes the Commander of the Mailed Fist herself. He didn't think that young dragon was that foolish, but, y'a never know...

"You, Archer! Keep alert for a possible dragon strafing the tent!" With the last guard down, that should be the best thing for the archer to busy himself with.

Then he concentrates on the witch. He focuses on accuracy rather than number of attacks.

The green flames follow on the tip of his blades threating to engulf him, he pirouettes, jukes and sidestep to make them flow past him and dissipate. he is so focused on avoiding the green flames, that he didn't notice her hand snaking out to touch him on his head. the touch is light, and his focus and movement didn't leave a place for the flames to stick, but the burn was incredible like his soul was on fire!
That all takes place in a far-off corner of his mind, he recognizes it, catalogs it and works it into the equation, but it doesn't effect him. The buzz is still strong. in the split second of time between one moment and the next plans flow through his mind, only to be discarded. Her hand is extended exposing her rib cage and arm pit. Sigvar looks to the front of the tent. The area is thick with Agent's trying to bring the woman down. Prudence seems to be having the best luck at it since she is immune to the fire and capable of damaging the incorporeal woman. Sigvar looks at the guard he just dropped and assesses his wounds, then, with a srug he tuches his tattoo and then the man, healing enough to hopefully stabilize him. He kicks the man's weapon away, in case it was enough to wake him.
If the man stirs Sigvar tells him how it is. " Stay down and you can live through this. The Fist will have questions. If you answer them, you might gain mercy. Run or attack us though and I will have to put you down again."
Hopefully Sigvar can heal him. He just went down and the hit wasn't too hard. If not and if it is obvious he can't then Sigvar will use the heal on himself.

Anna attacks the air near the woman. Nikolai yells to the arches and makes a feeble swing at the woman, but misses as well. Michael continues his attacks, hitting as well as he can while continuing to taunt her. His strikes draw the green flames once again (Will save DC 22 or covered in green flames and sickened) while Pru taunts her with more magic missiles that slam into her. Tinker moves around and waves at the woman with his sap. The woman cries out to Michael, “You shall be the next Fist to die in a long line! You all will pay!” She reaches out with a green bolt, but the bolt flies high and misses him.

Sigvar reaches down and heals the guard he had just taken out while kicking the weapon away from him. The hooded man is worried about a dragon and scans the skies for one.

Trayvin heads over to the stage and helps the commander to her feet. She shakes her head and takes in the situation around her.

Tinker maneuvers some holy water and manages to pour it over the woman. The water looks like acid as it bubbles over her skin burning her! Michael continues his attacks while the green flames burn over him. He yells at her and continues to taunt her. Nikolai joins in the taunting, being so brave as to laugh at her face. He manages to get her to glance at him as Anna strikes with her massive club. The club makes contact, but Anna can tell the insubstantialness of the woman keeps it from doing as much damage as it should. As the woman turns to strike at Michael once again, Pru’s final missiles slam into the woman. She screams as she starts to fade, “Noooo! It cannot end like this! My revenge!” She quickly fades and disappears from sight.

Meanwhile, The hooded man keeps a watch on the skies, but still sees nothing from his vantage point.

Trayvin helps the commander and asks about other groups. The commander looks over at the woman as she starts to fade and whispers, “Can it be Madam Wizard? No, no, it cannot be.”

Anna was not having a good day. It was bad enough that she woke up fatigued and plagued by disease, she know has sickening green flame to contend with. On the plus side at least their enemies were defeated though the witch did say she was expecting that dragon. Maybe it was waiting for the Agents to drop their guards before it attacked?

Nikolai wished he'd had the chance to got to the library when they got back yesterday and look up this form of undead they met in the form of this witch woman, but there was just so many hours in the day and he really needed the sleep. Now she was gone and them none the wiser.

He looks over himself and realizes he's untouched but many of his team are hurt pretty bad. This should call for more R'n'R than the usual. Fortunately, none are down, and that is a prayer answered.

While his team start to gather themselves and check the wounded, he goes over to the guard he tackled. He didn't think he had killed her and needed to check.

Administer First Aid to stabilize +9 DC15 = 25

He hears the Commander say something about a madam so he listens carefully as he checks to see if his healing did any good. He reaches for his backpack to retrieve some rope. He's not going to leave anything up for chance.

"Tinker, give me a hand in tying her up and gagging her, when you get a chance."

Those who are sick remain sick and sickened. Michael struggles to keep down his breakfast and fails. He asks the commander more about the woman as two teams of Fists come running out the main gate, ready for battle. They look around and spot the commander, who is attempting to wave them away as Tinker comes up to assist her as well. The commander shakes off the assistance and looks around, shaking her head one last time to clear it as she takes in the scene.

Anna, who is really feeling bad now (indeed, sickened from the blow), looks up to the skies and feels dizzy, but does not spot any dragons. She cannot make any connections between the dragon and the woman other than the green flames and the green scales. Pru throws some additional rays into the ground, as if daring the woman to come back and then she moves to assist Anna.

Trayvin channels some energy to heal those around him as Nikolai heads to the guard he took out. He stabilizes the guard and asks Tinker to help him tie up the guard.

Sigvar checks out the other guard and finds that the guard is indeed dead. Checking over the body, it looks just like any other Fist guard. The hooded man steps out of the meeting hall and looks to the skies. He sees a tiny speck a long way to the south that looks too large and out of place to be a bird, but it is a long ways away.

As the two fists appear, Sigvar stops his inspection of the body and draws his sword again. No one else is coming into this tent unless the Knight Commander clears them. He was fooled once, shame on him. It wasn't happening again. Once things are settled down, assuming they are, Sigvar will hoist the guard and his gear onto his shoulder and bring it along. There may still be more to be learned from this corpse

Since it's pretty obvious that the commander has better things to do than entertaining a lowly Sargent, Michael busies himself directing any unled Fist soldiers into doing something useful. straightening up the tent. policing the bodies, it occurs to him that there is a possibility that a dragon may show up. He picks out the most competent looking corporal of the bunch and calls him over. Corporal, there is a strong possibility that we are going to be hit by a Dragon shortly. I want you to detail some of your squad to getting the villagers away from this area. I want you to go talk to the Sargent of the Guard and tell him I sent you and that we need a Ballista squad set up to take this thing under enfilade should it show up. I need this all done as soon as possible....I need to get a read back from you to make sure you have all this.

Tinker moves off, but looks sideways at Commander Palance. He thinks she recognized the Witch and is now being hush about it. The dwarf is loyalty personified, but even he has been affected by Pavilion Nutruis, and he isn't blindly loyal to everyone anymore.

Still, there are more pressing things to do, so Tinker grabs some rope and does a quick tie up of the captured guard; "you got some answers that need to be questioned", he tells the captive.

And then he moves to block the new Fists from the Knight Commander with Sigvar. Dagger in one hand and a sword scooped up from the ground in the other, the dwarf, his own blood splattering his shirt and vest, is in no mood to be fooled again. "Commander? Your orders?"

With their hostage tied and Pru organizing the evacuation of the tent, the Commander already seen to, Nikolai is a bit reluctant to start ordering orders with a superior officer present and subverting the chain of command. Right now that didn't seem necessary so he keeps his attention to his captive.

"If there is going to be a dragon visiting, we need to get this wizard to a safer place. He's the only one left alive that can answer some questions. Trayvin, you take this fake guard to the infirmary. This will give you a chance to see if they can heal your sickness, then return as fast as you can. I don't trust our captive with anyone not of my Fist and if you can return healed, so much the better."

He then moves to where he can turn his attention to the skies and the spot pointed to.

Other Fist teams come running out the main entrance to the citadel and there are now a dozen or more armed and armored Fistians moving about, trying to decide what to do. Sigvar looks to stand against them with Tinker, which confuses some of the guards. Pru and Nikolai start to give instructions. Tinker asks the Commander for instructions while Nikolai scans the skies for the dragon and Anna prepares spells. Nikolai squints and as best he can determine if it is the dragon, it is likely miles away at this point. It looks as if it is heading east to west, not towards the Citadel at all.

Commander Palence then takes charge with a booming voice, “Nikolai, see to your Fist. Take the captive to the cells immediately. Then meet me for a debrief.” She points over at another Fist group and calls out, “Tolartin, get your Fist out here and see to the citizens. Secure this area and help those who can be helped. Spare no effort.” She looks to the sky and continues to another, “Galtorn, get your group in a defensive posture. Watch the sky and report to me if there is any chance of anything happening.”

When the Commander steps up, Michael cede's commanding the troops instantly. When she tells Nikolai to gather his fist he runs over to stand by him. While not lawful by any stretch of the imagination Michael understands the need for order in a military operations,

Nikolai informs everyone what he sees an what he deduces from what he sees. In turn, Commander Palance gives him his orders to the Fist. Michael is quick to his side.

"Yes Sir!" he replies back with a salute.

Relieved that the citizens have someone else to take care of them, he grabs the unconscious wizard under the arms and calls for Anna to pick up the legs.

"Nikolai's Fist! To the infirmary!" He orders.

"You! Hooded Archer! You're with us. I need your eyewitness for my report! And don't argue!"

Nikolai has given the orders and as soon as Anna picks up her half of their captive, they head to the infirmary as fast as they can.

"Anna, I want to make sure this one survives, so we take him/her to the infirmary first, then to the prison. If we go to the prison first, who knows when a medic will show up. Besides, if we can revive him/her on our own once in the prison, we can get first crack at an interrogation. Once we leave him/her, we may not get that chance." he mutters quietly over his shoulder as the enter the Citadel.

Action: pick up unconscious bound prisoner and make due haste to the infirmary.

The group gets to work and the efficiency of the Fist shows up quickly. As some move to assist the people, Nikolai’s Fist grabs the injured, bound attacker and heads inside. It takes a few minutes (let’s say 20 rounds) to collect everyone together and get to the infirmary. The infirmary is a relatively small section of rooms, but there are four beds in the main room and a doctor greets you as you arrive. His eyes rise as he sees the injured person bound. He gestures to the bed and asks, “What would you have me do with this one since they are bound?” He notices the Fist colors on the guard and gives another look to the group.

" Don't look so troubled, the bound one and the dead one are either imposters or traitors, they attacked the assembly outside the walls. Bound one is a mage, so the bonds stay, unless you ant fireballs going off in here.Bound one is unconscious, the rest of us are sickened and diseased, different diseases on each myself and Anna. The green flames on them are from an apparently undead attacker, who is now really dead. Please do what you can. The prisoner is bound for the brig and we are needed in the Knight Commanders office ASAP."
Sigvar is still carrying the guard he killed. No real reason to put it down, and maybe Trayvin can get answers from him even if the mage won't talk. Clerics can sometimes talk to the dead.

Heres what we can do doc, you get the mage woken up, I'll stand by and if she looks like she's going to be trouble I'll put her out again, I need you to understand that I have no wish to harm or kill this person, but at the same time I will not allow her to hurt the people in this room. cut her loose as you will. I'll give her a second smile if she acts up.

with that he pulls one of his daggers, feels for a pulse in the cartroid artery in her neck and sets the poing of the dagger gently against it.. he then grabs a handful of hair and positons himself such that he can do what needs to be done if she thinks to cast a spell.

(ooc: is it possible to "take 20" for a stab on an unconscious person? if so I take it as a readied action.

not going for coup de grace, just wanting to put a bleed attack on her should she get randy. if she's at 1 or 2 hp the bleed should put her back out without killing her.

Anna says, "Yeah I could use some healing. If you can remove disease that should help but I'm not sure how to put out the green flames."

She follows up, "As for our friend here, maybe we should gag her before she comes to. Also have we found a material component pouch on her? Probably good to take away as well. if we take those precautions the only way she will ever be able to cast a spell would be if she could cast it without material, verbal or somatic components."

The doctor nods in understanding. He says, “I assume the commander is fully informed.” He then instructs those with diseases to line up and he pulls out a few scrolls from a drawer. He casts remove disease on Sigvar and Anna. The diseases from the monsters is quickly removed as Tinker guards the door to the infirmary.

When Trayvin and Pru explain the green flames, the doctor tries an additional scroll. He frowns when it has no effect on the green flames. He digs around in a drawer and pulls out another scroll and reads it. When he does, the green flames flicker and disappear. He says out loud, “Interesting. That required a remove curse spell to remove.” He is able to cast it again to remove the green flames from anyone else that needs them removed.

Michael and Nikolai ask for the unconscious guard to be stabilized. The doctor nods and casts a healing spell as Michael guards the guard’s neck with his dagger. The guard’s eyes flutter open, she starts to move, but quickly stops as she feels the dagger pressed against her neck. She looks at Michael, but does not say a word.

From searching the guards, the group has found a staff that the magical guard had been using, a rather nice, shiny, reddish longsword; and an axe that looks to be of quality material. The rest of their belongings look rather normal and standard fist-issue.

Sigvar releases a breath he didn't know he was holding. The throbbing headache that had made it hard to see what was going on, hard to piece together the ambush was gone. So too were the joint aches that had made it hard to strike cleanly and clearly, leading to the prolonged fight rater than a quick clean kill. Now he felt more himself.

" Not that easy honey. You crossed the Fist, now you need to answer to it. We wanted the answers so we knew what was going on. The Knight Captain will likely want them worse than we do. You can sit in the brig bound and gagged until an interrogator gets the time to really, really ask you questions. No easy way out from this. I imagine once they crush your hands and break your jaw so that spellcasting is not an option they will then get around to the nitty gritty of what we want to know. You are missing your shot at the easy interrogation. Your loss."

"You and your companions were very brave, and very dedicated. I'd like to understand why you fought. This seems like something deeply personal, and if that's the case, there may be another way to get what you want. A way that doesn't involve hurting and killing. But in order to find it, we have to know your story. What happened to you? And how was this going to make it right?"

Tinker looks over at the Hooded Man. "Thanks for the help back there. I am Daemar Torvalsson, usually called Tinker, Agent, Wolf Company, Nikolai's Fist." He looks up into the sky, and shrugs. "Nikolai got a look at the flying speck you saw too, and said it was going away from the Citadel [DM Post 6 Mar]. Besides, Galthon's Fist is on high watch. If there is a change, we'll get warning."

The dwarf isn't concerned that he doesn't know the Hooded Figure. Knight Commander Constance Palance does, and that's good enough for Tinker. He pushes down the nagging questions about how much loyalty she deserves by withholding important information ... for now.

He looks for a nearby recruit without leaving his post. "You! Message to deliver to the Commander's Tower. Begins: The Agents are at the infirmary. Bring Agent Daemar his Urgrosh and Crossbow ASAP. Ends." He gives the recruit an agate glare. "Repeat to me". As soon as the recruit can repeat the message verbatim, Tinker growls. "Good. Now scoot!"

He hopes his equipment gets there soon. He feels like he's missing an arm without his weapons!

Sigvar holds Michael back a bit and continues the threats. Tinker stays at the door and then sends a recruit off after his things. The recruit nods and takes off at a run, sure to return very quickly while the hooded man looks outside. The infirmary is a bit inside the walls, so there is no easy access to the out of doors to watch the sky, but he does spot a few small spiders running along the far wall of the hallway.

Meanwhile, Anna, Pru, and Nikolai work together to try and convince the guard to give up some information. She finally breaks and replies, “Look, I’m dead now. The Fist is going to kill me. You know it, and I know it. So nothing else really matters, nothing! Not my life, not the Fist, not my brother’s life, none of it makes any difference to me or the Fist now or ever, as if it ever did. Its over, so just kill me now.”

The group continues to talk to the guard, and the idea of her brother being held captive comes up. Nikolai mentions that she may not know the Fist and Sigvar calls her a coward. It is when Pru mentions making things right that she finally reacts. About that time, Anna reads her scroll and detects plenty of thoughts and anger.

The guard suddenly sits up and shoves Michael’s hand with the dagger to the side. She starts yelling, “I don’t know the Fist? Do you see this uniform? I AM the Fist! I am a full member, this is no disguise! I know the Fist inside and out! I know what the Fist does and that is exactly why they need to be stopped! And you, you are part of this and them!”

She stands up and pokes Sigvar in the chest, continuing, “A coward? You call me a coward while you hide behind the Fist colors? I went through all the training of the Fist and I am no page boy to be shoved around. I am no coward! If you want to see a coward, look in the mirror! See the Fist group that runs around trying to help people, but don’t care who they kill in the meantime! You say I shouldn’t kill innocents when you are part of the group that kills without regard to who they hurt!”

She turns back away from Sigvar and addresses Nikolai, “The blood of my brother is on your hands, and now you and your precious group will kill me as well. Oh sure, you will have a mock trial, but it will be much like the one we just saw! Come on Fist, let’s see more of that justice!” She shoves Nikolai with both hands, surprising him with her strength as he stumbles backwards. “Go ahead, get your Fist justice on me now, no one is looking!”

So your accusations are hollow unless you can be specific.

Besides, it was well publicized that Commander Palance gave Honorable Discharge for any Fist members that were displeased with how things were working out for them, so if you didn't like the Mailed Fist anymore, then why didn't you just resign?

Sigvar snorts.
He would answer these foolish charges but Thumb Nickolai has already said, more eloquently than Sigvar would, what needs to be said. The only one killing innocent people here so far as Sigvar knew was this Mage. She had fireballed the tent. Her helpers attacked from surprise, quite effectively. Sigvar had even offered the man he faced quarter, though the man decided to face his death with honor. He had fought well and Sigvar saw no loss of honor had the man accepted. He decides to follow his mother's advice and gather more information before speaking again

Marcus introduces himself to Tinker and the two converse near the door.

Meanwhile inside tempers have started to flare. Nikolai addresses the guard and pokes her right back. Trayvin and Pru try to take the soft approach while Michael joins Nikolai in demanding answers. Anna continues to work on the thoughts of the guard and feels that by next round she might get more information.

The woman stands back and sighs. She looks around the room at each of the members gathered. She glances at the door, not as if looking to escape, but checking to see if anyone else is there. She says, (truthfully, as far as Trayvin can tell) “The Fist killed my brother. It was a long time ago, but I swore I would have vengeance. I have studied long and hard and had my chance. Obviously, it did not work. I failed at my life’s goal. Now it is over. None of the Fist have died and my brother will never have his vengeance. Now I will get a trial and be executed myself. Unless…” She glances over at the door again. “Perhaps you could see your way to… well, going about your business somewhere else?”

The people at large in the Wold would laud our intelligence to let someone who admitted that they planned, poorly, to punish the Fist and ended up killing innocent bystanders instead, go."
"On a related note, the only people that seem to be on a sham of a trial here is The Fist. You make wild accusations and say we should defend ourselves, but offer no details. The Fist is a Mercenary Unit. We take jobs, usually jobs that protect the innocent and stop evildoers. People get killed on those jobs because the average bandit, or strong arm brigand or other military unit we are going against didn't get into their line of work to be reasonable, so they fight us and they lose. If your brother died when the Fist executed a Lawful contract against him then apparently he didn't want to be reasonable either."


Now that he knows she wants to get away, things are simpler for Sigvar. He makes sure that he remains within 10 feet of her and stands ready that if she attempts to flee or cast a spell he will strike her with his horns.

Nikolai backs off a little. "Regardless of how or why or by whom your brother was killed, you still need to accept responsibility for your actions. By your own admission you purposely chose to infiltrate the Mailed Fist for revenge. You must answer to that.

You've explained your reasoning, but how about the others in your team? What about the other guards? What about that ghostly woman? How did you come to be associated with them? And who was it that the ghostly witch was calling out to?

Nikolai's Fist has a certain degree of freedom to pick missions that the other Fists are not equipped to handle. Be specific about your brother's circumstances and we will look into it. You can trust us to find the Truth, just as we were trusted to find the Truth about Commander Neutronis. We found that he had broken a contract and murdered a messenger. We didn't hide that fact and sweep it under a rug. If an investigation shows wrongdoing on a Fist's part, we will bring it out in the open.

I can't speak for any Fist other than mine, that we have never intentionally killed innocents, however some have been caught between us and our enemies. Hopefully your brother was not one of them. But be aware that your brother may not have been one of those innocent bystanders but one that chose to be our enemy."


Nikolai put a lot on the table and he regains a little of his patience in order to give the guard some time to respond.

Anna concentrates on the guard. She reads powerful thoughts of fear, hatred, and failure. When the guard glances at the door, there is a glimmer of hope, but that thought goes away quickly as Tinker moves to continue to guard the door.

Pru and Nikolai attempt to reason with the guard, makings offer to investigate any wrongdoing. She looks at Pru with sad eyes, but then quickly her eyes turn back hard. Sigvar has taken up a defensive position with Michael, so they are ready when she starts to cast a spell. As soon as she moves, he is there with his horns, quickly stopping her and bringing her down to the ground. She is once again unconscious.

IC: Nikolai has very little patience with obstinate people.
"Yes, we are done here. We did everything we could to get her to open up so we could help. Some people are just so eat'n up with hate they don't want help. Her brother is dead and we can't fix that. She won't give us details of how or by whom so we can't investigate that. She won't tell us who her cohorts were so that's that. Commander Palance can choose other means to get the information, but that's not our call to do it.

Nikolai thanks the medics for their help in curing the Fist of their curses and diseases, then commandeers a stretcher to aid in carrying the guard to the dungeons.

The group escorts the guard to the prisons. The citadel has only a few cells, but they are all empty when the group delivers the guard. The prison guard nods without saying a word and locks the cell after she is deposited there.

It takes about 15 minutes total for the group to drop off the prisoner and return to Palence’s office. When they arrive, she is standing behind her desk, pacing. She looks up when the group arrives and says, “I don’t know what’s going on here. Give me the debrief of your time away. I received messages from the town that you were all innocent. I knew that before I sent you, but we had to make things look good. Tell me everything that happened while you were gone.”

When the guards were searched, 3 items of value were found: a nice, shiny axe, a longsword that has strange red lettering along the length of the sword, and a twisted staff made of reddish-brown wood from the guard that is in prison now.

Now the the prisoner is off their hands Nikolai can pay attention to other things, like their new companion.

"Good to meet you, Mr. Maximus. What name do you prefer to go by? My name is Nikolai Komonov and this is Nikolai's Fist, our newest member is Sigvar, the minotaur, just recently only days ago.

Do come with us. You were in the battle as much as us and your own report will be required, besides, as an unbiased party, you can verify that our interrogation of the traitor guard was above board and by the book, and delivered in good health."


Nikolai says little else as the others introduce themselves and soon the doors to Commander Palance's office stands in their way.

When asked for their full report of their trip, Nikolai hands his commander a scroll tube labeled 'Mission to Sandrill Crossing'. Nikolai felt it unnecessary to label it for what it actually was, a trial based upon a bogus accusation of murder.

Nikolai stands stiff and salutes his commander. "Here is the longer long version of our trip. The shorter long version starts with your orders to go to Sandrill Crossing to answer the accusation that I murdered the bandit Gerard. Our trip to Sandrill was rather uneventful until a day out when a young green dragon waylaid us and we whupped his butt and sent him flying with his tail between his legs. As the song says, 'Well he flew through the briars, and he flew through the brambles. And he flew through the bushes where a rabbit wouldn't go...'.

Arriving at Sandrill, we presented ourselves, myself as a captive, to the city council official who recorded that we had arrived as ordered and told us where we could stay and what time to present ourselves in court the next day. The town seemed very unfriendly so we took a room and kept to ourselves.

Next day we showed up in court as ordered and the judge read the charges. We demanded that the accuser show himself to press the charges himself. A tall cloaked wobbly figure approached the bench but before he got there he fell, revealing that he was not a 'tall' person at all but two leprechauns. The room erupted in chaos as other leprechauns caused mayhem and mischief whilst the first two got away.

Once the room settled down again, the judge ruled a mistrial and cleared us of all the accusations listed and set us free. The town then suddenly became pretty friendly, as must add.

Free of that burden, we hastened to the spot were the dragon attacked us and looked for its lair. We found a treasure stash, that's when Sigvar found us. We gathered up all our stuff from town and headed back home. A couple days out, we came across some odd stinky swamp creatures in the middle of the road. We tried to converse with them to get them to move so our wagon could pass but their language is that of plant creatures and they attacked us.

In their defense, they had been compelled to do so by that ghost witch we fought today. She had enlisted some Will O' Wisps to aid in the fight also. Once we dispatched three of the swamp creatures and had the fourth unconscious and our efforts turned to her, the witch knew it was time to flee.

We have no idea why this ambush, but that ghost witch apparently was not satisfied in being just undead and staged the events of this morning.

Anna is saddened that most of her boosts have expired without having any further enemy to confront and that she didn't get to potentially learn the commander's surface thoughts if they were to question her about the witch. It seems rude to recast detect thoughts in the Commander's presence.

Anna tells the Commander of their recent experience in the field from their encounter with the dragon to their travels to the village and the intelligence gathering to will o wisps in the middle of the night to the trial and the leprechauns. She then informs Constance of their encounter with the witch and the swamp things on the way back home.

When she is done she offers a smart salute and said, "Do you know who the green woman was who kept harassing us?"

Commander Palence stops and listens. When Pompous speaks up, the commander interrupts and says, “Oh, yes, I almost forgot.” She points to Sigvar and says, “I see that Sigvar managed to meet up with you. Indeed, he was sent from here, I hope there were no issues finding them.” She then points over to Pompous and continues, “Yes, this is Marcus Maximus. He had trained and we were preparing to have him added to your team when all this happened on your return. It appears that you have already met him. In any case, Marcus, this is Nikolai’s Fist. Nikolai’s Fist, this is Marcus. Now please, go on.”

When Nikolai starts narrating the story, Palence interrupts here and there to confirm details. When the dragon is mentioned her eyes grow wide. Then when it is mentioned that it was chased off she says, “Wait, you attacked the dragon and lived?” She thinks a moment and says, “Ah, but now we have a dragon roaming free. We will have to see to that.”

“Swamp creatures and will-o-wisps on the road? I certainly hope that’s the last we hear of that.”

When Anna asks about the ghost witch she says, “I was hoping you might be able to tell me more about her. There was this woman, years and years ago, that tried to take over the area here. The Fist defeated her, though, so I don’t know how this could be her. Did she tell you her name at any point? Clearly she is allied with things of the swamp, but the one I am thinking of lived in a castle that was utterly destroyed by the Fist a long time ago. Do you have any other ideas that might help us confirm her identity? I mean, if it were the woman I’m thinking of, that was hundreds of years ago.”

Sigvar then listens to the narration of the trial and todays fight. When asked for more details he mentions what Tinker confirmed.
" I think it could be the same one. I mean she HATES the Fist and had a pretty bad reaction to the holy water Tinker splashed on her. In my book that makes her undead or some kind of extra-planar demon."

This one obviously has freedom to move around. But my understanding of ghostly natures is rather limited. I shall study more on the subject. If the Fist who filed the report on the incident is as thorough as we were taught to be, it should include the offensive details she used against the Fist. Whoever she is, she was able to draw together a lot of different actors to work against us. A young green dragon, Will-o-Wisps, leprechauns, bog beasts and dissatisfied Fist members. That's not typical ghost behaviour. The holy water burned her, but she is much more than a ghost. I'm thinking she's lich or some other advanced form of undead...and if she is...we haven't seen the last of her.

Palence listens to interest to the various answers given to her questions. She nods thoughtfully and then looks up in surprise when Tinker provides the signet ring. She picks it up quite carefully, as if she is afraid she will break it. Then she whistles and a young trainee runs into the room. He looks over at Nikolai in awe, but listens carefully to Palence.

“Take this to the head librarian. Tell her is it from me. Go.”

The young man grabs the ring and runs out of the room.

“If anyone knows the history of this area, it is our librarians. She will know if that is a significant ring, or if it is nothing. We may need to know the exact location where you found that if it is something.”

When Nikolai offers to look into more on the woman she says, “First, let us go outside and see what else needs to be done here to clean this up.” She turns and heads down the hallways and towards the gate to the citadel.

The group steps outside and sees that a crowd has gathered around the outside meeting area. There are a few Fist members around milling about, but the excitement seems to have ended…until a person spots you Fist members coming out the door. He points and shouts, “That is them! They are the ones who saved us from the ghost witch! Hooray for the Fist!”

The crowd joins in a cheer and starts moving towards the group. The commander wisely steps back and out of the way as the crowd reaches the Fist. Everyone wants to reach up and pat members on the back, shake your hands, and thank you. One woman tries to kiss Nikoali on the lips. Another rubs Tinker on the head. A couple of guys that look like they might be twins wink and nod as Anna. Palence leans back against the wall, watching, and you see a very rare smile appear on her face.

Tinker is surprised about the reaction of the people. Despite his usual stoic demeanor, he doesn't really know what to do and so succumbs to back pats, head rubs, and awed adoring faces.

Tinker is more bemused by anything else. They have been getting more noteriety even though their exploits have been in other locations. This was very public, and is a very public reaction.

Pompous? she is thinking. I have brothers named Righteous and Pious, and even I think that's excessive. Poor guy.

Outside, she is momentarily taken aback by all the cheers, but soon her sunny smile is back in place. "You're giving us too much credit, really," she says. "Mostly we were just in the right place at the right time."

Nikolai at first grins and repeats over and over again that the safety of the town is all that matters but is caught off guard by one woman's amorous affection. His thoughts race 'Oh NO! I hope she didn't see this! What will she think of me?' and takes a quick glance over towards Pru and tries to wipe any vestiges of her lips the woman may have left on his lips.

He manages to communicate with the Fist, "Looks like things are well under control here, let's get back inside and start getting ready for another trip." Any excuse to extricate themselves from this uncomfortable situation is fair game and he tries to do just that.

Anna says to Pompous, "Well met sir Ranger, tell me is your bond with the land or a companion? I believe I can talk to animals and plants without the use of a spell regardless of my current form & if you are bonded to a creature of fur, feather or scales I would like to introduce myself."

When she gets out to the hall she flashes the twins a mischievous grin and says, "Look Pru, twins. One for me and one for you. She takes Pru's hand and pulls her over to where the two men are to introduce herself and Pru. When she gets close to the brothers she whispers to Pru, "watch this." and then activates her alter self SLA to look and sound like Pru (Disguise: 43 from the polymorph effect)

Anna-Pru says, "Boys I'm flattered by your attention I really am, but isn't my sister in arms Prudence more radiant than I?" Anna-Pru spins around as she says this. She then continues, "Also look now we are twins too, though our twinship is only temporarily. I know why don't we go on a double date to the Last Assignment? What say you Pru?" Anna-Pru asks to Pru-Pru.

Sigvar nods to the new recruit, owing him a few rounds for his timely intervention. Secretly he is also relieved to not be the new guy any longer.
Outside he is more at home than many of his companions seem to be. Shock troops in the Bear company were often held in higher respect and well treated. He nods at Nickolai's order and heads back inside to prep for the trek they will probably be taking to this ruin that the team found the ring in.

The group accepts the adoration of the crowd in different ways. Anna approaches the twins and suddenly appears to match Pru. The eyes of both of the twins go wide and their mouths drop open. After a moment’s pause, they move forward and attempt to take Anna and Pru in their arms to swing and dance with them, despite the lack of any music.

Nikolai tries to extricate himself from the crowd. He succeeds, but is met at the door by Commander Palence. She tries to hide a smile as he addresses him, “And just where are you headed, Nikolai?” Without waiting for an answer, she addresses the crowd, “Here, here!” she shouts to get their attention. As they calm down a little she continues, “How about a celebration for these heroes? Let us have a dinner and celebration here, at the meeting house, this very evening!” With that proclamation, another cheer goes up from the crowd. She smiles at Nikolai and says, “And you will attend, that is an order.” She tries to be serious but she cannot hide the pride and smiles she has for the group.

The time is late morning.

Tinker actually breathes a sigh of relief at the Commander's timely intervention; a feast in the evening is a much more controlled environment than a sudden display of affection. Respect and even a little admiration (from the city guard at Ailthmar) he was used to getting, but adoration was something else.

Tinker stays until the crowd disperses and the goes back to their quarters in Commander Palance's Tower. "Sigvar, Pompous, come along and I'll show you the Agent's quarters." Tinker leads the new Battle-buddies to the suite of rooms that Palance designated for the Agents. A sturdy, reinforced wood door opens onto a large common with windows and a balcony that overlooks the Fist's training grounds. From the common room, two corridors run left and right with individual sleeping quarters enough for the whole group. Tinker indicates the two rooms not yet taken and still has Fist-issued furniture decorating the chamber; bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, chest, washbasin, arming stand, rag-rug, and fireplace. "Quartermasters is open for any standard issue items of course."

Tinker spends the morning and afternoon getting clean and then dumping his equipment and doing maintenance on every item before neatly placing back in his rucksack. Armor and weapons get the same treatment. Only then does he get a quick wash, clean clothes, and is ready in the common room idly picking his mantacles locks while waiting for everyone to go to dinner together.

While I do indeed know much of, well most things really, I know most of the ways of the great forests and majestic swamps."
Pompous pauses, for dramatic effect more then anything.
" I'm sorry to disappoint you but I do now have an animal companion like many rangers would. I specialized in tracking and knowing the ways of the great fauna."
" Your professed gift of communicating directly with the fauna intrigues me dear lady. I've known a few druids that were able to do the same. When convenient, I would appreciate a demonstration? "

Sigvar follows Tinker's lead and thanks him for showing him the layout of their quarters. Last night they were pretty exhausted so the layout was kind of overlooked. Thankfully he had been here before traveling to meet the Agents, He had already had the standard Fist furniture replaced with Minotaur sized accoutrements. He too cleans and reorders his gear while his cat climbs into his rack and catches some rest. He adds no polish, but cleans and oils or waxes everything to protect it. He then goes for a bath, to soak out the lingering effects of the disease. He catches some rest himself before redonning his armor and weapons for the night's feast.
Unless specifically ordered, Sigvar never roams unarmed, and seldom unarmored.

Pru stays where she is for a time, chatting easily with the assembled Fist members, looking forward to the evening's celebration. She moves away, not seeming to be in any particular hurry. Her real goal, of course, is to be sauntering casually past the mess right about the time they begin serving the midday meal. She had been too nervous to eat much breakfast, and now she is famished!

Lunch out of the way, she goes to check if there is a letter for her--Verity's letter a few weeks ago had given her hope that more might follow. Then she returns to her quarters. She washes quickly, then takes the time to unbraid, brush, and re-braid her very long hair. As the time for the celebration approaches, she dons a clean tunic and checks to make sure her boots are clean and polished.

When she has a moment she says to Pompous, "Yes my name is Anna and my Lady Queen Ma'ab has seen fit to bless me with her speech. As such I can talk to humanoids, fey, plants, animals and magical beasts regardless of my own form at the moment as I said."

She then asks Sigvar's cat, "How are you today, Mr Cat?" considering that Pompous did want a demonstration.

[b]"All right, all right. As you ordered, I'll, we'll be there. Sir," Nikolai salutes and slips on by. One last look back he sees the two twins flirting with Pru and Anna-Pru. It disturbs him a little that he can't tell between Real Pru and Anna-Pru.

To keep his mind off this, he heads to the library. He seeks out the librarian on duty and asks for the archives going back to the supposed battle with this witch woman. He spends the rest of the afternoon in the librarian looking for the report of that event.

An hour before the celebrations start he heads back to his room. He showers and picks out his Dress Uniform for the night. 'She wants it a grand affair, she'll get it.'

As he approaches the meeting house at the appointed time and he can hear the noise of the celebrations in full swing, he can't help but ponder the irony that here they are, eating and drinking and having a good time while another, a traitor, sits in a dark, damp, cell, unwilling to open up and perhaps get a reprieve of sorts. The irony that it could have been him sitting in a dark, damp, cell somewhere in Sandrill Crossing if that witch's plan had worked and the leprechauns had been a wee bit more reliable. You gotta hand it to the leprechauns for their inability to take things too seriously and treat most things as some king of prank or joke.

He peeks in to see if any other of his Fist are there but he had rather they all enter together so he waits outside for anyone that has not shown up yet. He fidgets and mentally kicks himself for not stuffing his Hat of Disguise inside a pocket so he could manage an escape when he felt he'd spent enough time to fulfill his obligation. 'Sigh, oh well.'

"Leave me alone, I'm trying to sleep here, It's like 75% of my job."

" I came from being imprisoned, where am I supposed to get a dress uniform in a couple of hours. Do any of you have anything that can make it look like I am in a dress uniform? I haven't got one and don't think they could even get me fitted before this party starts, much less get one stitched together. Besides, It couldn't hurt to go prepared to a shin dig like this, what with the way the last 'meeting' turned out. I mean if you all want me to carry something for you and can illusion me up so that I am dressed appropriately, what's the harm right?"
Sigvar looks especially at Tinker, who he knows fought the last battle with nothing more than grit and a boot knife. Heck the other's weapons were small, they wouldn't even make his pack look used, and if they had some magic to cover it over....

With a stretch and a soft 'Meow', the cat looks at Anna with one half lidded eye.
" He's not kidding about the Bear Company parties. I made sure to be scarce at those things, They would throw or eat almost anything, not necessarily in that order. Halflings, cats, sheep, on one occasion a horse, no lie, a horse. You guys are way more sedate."
The eye closes and with a luxurious stretch and a purr, the cat is asleep again.

For Sigvar, Tinker shrugs. "Commander said formal and didn't specify dress uniform. I'm just going to use the same uniform I had from graduation." He goes to pull it from his wardrobe and puts it on. "Hrmm, a little tight about the chest. "

Tinker is clean and in his graduation uniform. He leaves his armor and most weapons in his room, but has his magical cloak and ring along with his silvered dagger and sap tucked away with his lockpicks. You never know!

Nikolai was about to suggest his Hat of Disguise to Sigvar but Anna pulls what's needed out of her bag of tricks. Then he wonders what would happen if he used his hat for a third Pru and see how those twins react to that and chuckles as he goes to his room.

Michael Dresses in his best scout leathers but wears his Mithril shirt beneath them. It's light and fits nice. he takes his weapons as well. it may gather him strange looks, it may be a social faux pas, but it's better to be alive and a fool than dead and socially accepted.

Michael looks at Sigvar. you know with your coloration, a good brush and oil and then a minimal uniform, perhasp just a sash and a kilt and you'd look awesome!

The group takes their time and prepares for the celebration. Anna helps Sigvar prepare with a nice new uniform. Everyone else gets out what they can or their best. When it is time to go, the group opens to door to their suite to find a small crowd gathered outside their room. The crowd consists of a couple large guards, fully dressed in fine, bright uniforms. There are four other squires there, also in full uniform, pressed and polished. There are a few others there as well. Before anyone can ask them, one of the guards says, “Greetings Fist! We are your escort to the celebration, per our orders.” One of them turns with two of the squires and takes up the lead and starts down the hallway. The others wait for the group to follow and then bring up the rear. The procession feels very formal as you wind your way through the familiar hallways that you have traversed before in various states.

The guards lead you out the main entrance of the citadel into the twilight. What first catches your eyes is the lights and the meeting hall. Since you have last seen it, the meeting hall has completely changed. Gone are the benches and burn marks and instead there are a number of tables and chairs. The stage is still in place, and there is a row of tables there with empty seats behind them. There are a number of different sources of light hanging from various points and places along the edges of the tent and inside the large, open tent. There is food and drinks aplenty throughout the room and there is even an open space in the middle of the floor that appears to have been left open intentionally. Then you see all the people.

It looks like the entire town has showed up for the celebration and all their related relatives as well. There are people at all the tables and many others standing, talking, and walking around. Along the far side there are a number of kegs setup with a bar in front and plenty of mugs of ale being served to a number of people gathered around the bar. In the rear of the tent a group of musicians have setup an area and are playing music. There are a number of different string instruments and two singers, a man and a woman, singing a familiar tune. Beyond there are a number of temporary pits setup and a cooking area. There are various servers moving from the cooking area to the tables, serving food continuously.

One person at a near table notices the group coming out of the citadel. They nudge the person next to them and point. Quickly the word spreads and once again a cheer goes up from the group. The lead guard leads the way to the head table on the stage where there are enough seats for everyone. Two servers quickly appear, ready to provide you with food and drink.

Trayvin is a bit out of place. A soldier's life is a humble one, except where equipment was concerned. And growing up his family didn't make much room for 'fancy' stuff. Err Nikolai, they might be expecting some sort of speech from one of us."

Sigvar has chosen the dres uniform that Anna was so kind to conjure for him. He really wanted his armor, but upon seeing the crowd, the open floor and the close quarters is glad to have not worn the bulky armor. His warbraid swishes from side to side as he takes in the assembled crowd. He first looks for threats, namely the green witch woman. When he does not see her he begins to note faces he saw earlier in the day, both at the meeting, and in the crowd afterward. They seem genuinely glad to see the Agents, so he returns their smiles and cheers with a broad smile of his own.

He takes the seat set out for him, it could be meant for none other in the group, since it is made to hold someone his size. He places an order with one of the servers, ale for now, and meat vegetables and bread along with wine for the meal. He smiles and chats with those that wish to speak to him and tries his best to be on his best behavior.

Tinker gives a wave to the crowd. It's not polished but genuine. As the squires seem attentive, Tinker quietly asks for an ale and full plate. He's used to trail rations or the common mess, so is not really choosy about what kind of food is available!

Nikolai is still tired from their long trip and fight from the morning, then spending a whole afternoon perusing the library records, but plays the part expected of him. His dress uniform has barely been worn but it fits just fine, life on the trail keeps one trim and fit. He follows right behind the lead guards. He is so used to not wearing any armor or carrying much in terms of weaponry that it does not occur to him how the others will manage in that area and follows gracefully on.

The size of the crowd is a surprise to him though. When was the last time the Mailed Fist honored a Fist in this manner? Not in his memory! Perhaps when Neutronis became Knight Commander? Certainly didn't have any such thing when Commander Palance became Knight Commander. Would not have been appropriate considering the circumstances.

Things is, many Fists have worked hard and suffered much. They were just in the right place at the right time and it didn't seem quite right to get this much praise. On the other hand, it was kind of fun. For those that stare at them or wave and such, he waves back with a big smile.

He sits at the place indicated for him and first politely orders a mild drink and an appetizer, preferring to hit the heavy stuff later.

Pru is surprised and delighted by the size of the crowd. She takes her time making her way through the room--stopping to exchange greetings and to chat with anyone she knows, and probably a few people she's never met. She is determined to enjoy every minute of this.

Anna spent some time in the afternoon polishing her mithral plate. With her unique history of being a Druid turned Morphling through the magic of Ma'ab and starting out as an at large special agent, then joining the Shark company before getting re-assigned to Nikolai's Fist where she would later have her transformation she never really got a dress outfit of her own, but she really doesn't like being without her armor unless she is sleeping so she splits the difference and pulls a Tabard from the bag of tricks (OOC: valued at 5 gp per ultimate equipment which puts it equal in value to scholar outfit or cleric vestments so let me know what I should use for reskinning) for herself that bears the heraldry of Wolf Company and Nikolai's Fist. She is wearing the Tabard over her armor for the formal dinner.

She orders a meed from the server that Sigvar had flagged down for herself.

The group takes their seats at the table and finds no shortage of servers or ale. Beyond the regular servers are the occasional guest who wanders up to the table to talk with the heroes. A rather large, buxom woman with bright red hair and a dress that shows off many of her assets appears beside Pompous and offers him a large, frothy mug of ale while winking at him. A couple children that might be brother and sister scamper up and around Trayvin, then stare openly at his tusks before they run off under the table. A finely dressed fellow approaches Sigvar and starts talking about investments in the land outside the town and how he believes the success of the Fist will help expand his business. Tinker is served a rather large plate of some meat with a single potato by a young female gnome who bows to him as she serves him. The twins spot Anna from their location at the bar and take turns looking at her and trying to find Pru in the crowd. Meanwhile Pru works the crowd and is extremely well-received. Everyone wants to talk to her and be able to claim that they knew her.

Nikolai ends up with a seat next to Commander Palence. She engages him in some small talk for a bit, then stands, raising her hands for attention. It takes a few moments, but eventually the music stops and people start looking around. Palence steps up to the podium at the side of the stage and addresses the crowd.

“Today we are here to honor Nikolai’s Fist and their recent adventures. But their adventures have unearthed some of the past of the Fist, and I would like to share some of that story with all of you here. A long time ago, there was a powerful, magical woman that lived in the area east of here. No one ever knew her name, but she called herself ‘Madam Wizard.’ She had started to claim the middle lands of the peninsula of Farguina as her own. She dared others to try and claim her land. She was more powerful than the local governments, and she knew it. She did what she pleased, when she pleased. As she watched the towns give in to her, she planned to take over the entire peninsula and then, perhaps the world. She wanted more power and saw conquering others as a way to feel powerful.

“While the individual towns could not fight her, eventually a group of mayors got together and pooled their resources. They managed to put together just enough money to hire the Mailed Fist to send a group to stop this woman. The Fist sent a small group to attack her when she was out visiting ‘her’ lands. The group was quickly destroyed as the Fist had greatly underestimated her power. She was wounded, however, and headed back to her stronghold, a keep to the east of God City.

“The mailed fist wanted revenge and required no additional payment. They sent a large force to fight her at her keep. She was prepared for them and a long battle ensued. After days of fighting, the battle was a draw -- the Fist could not penetrate her defenses, but she could not come out to the battlefield and defeat the Fist, either. The Fist called on all their magical powers and people and executed a tactical feint -- the martial forces drew her in one direction while the magical powers snuck up on the keep from behind. With their combined forces, the Fist managed to create a huge magical explosion that utterly destroyed the keep and all those within. The keep was levelled and the Fist ensured nothing survived from the battle. The stones were scattered and the location of the keep was forgotten. Only a small depression and a few blocks remained at the site of the keep.

“However, we have now learned through the efforts of the Fist, that the spirit of Madame Wizard was not completely defeated. She had not completed her plan for dominating the peninsula. After the magical blast, it took many years, but finally her spirit had combined and created a dreaded witchfire. She had risen from the ashes of the old, forgotten keep, and she has not forgotten those who had destroyed her mortal body -- the Mailed Fist.

“This is the green woman that some of you saw here today and that Nikolai’s Fist destroyed. She had worked to gather a number of allies to work with her including mythical beasts and even a dragon! She would have continued her undead rampage and would have likely enslaved and taken over the entire peninsula as her own! For that, we salute these Fist members this evening.”

The commander makes a gesture and a number of additional guards step forward. They lift their arms and show they have medals on ribbons to place around each of the members at the table. The commander speaks again, “The Fist honors these members with the Legion of Merit, and all Fist members will treat them with the greatest honor and respect due such an award from this time forward.” As the medals are placed on each member the commander finishes with, “I give you Nikolai’s Fist of Wolf Company!” The crowd erupts with applause and soon they are all standing and clapping, some clapping their hands on their mugs of ale. A few cries of “Speech, speech!” are heard throughout the crowd.

Hmmph. He knew it. Somebody was gonna have to give a speech. But it wasn't going to be himself. Trayvin wasn't sure what was worse, facing down an undead creature or facing down the adoring crowd. He lifts his freshly filled mug of ale, and waits for an Agent to give a speech.

Tinker Lanliss and relaxes when the recruit serving him turns out to be a gnome: finally a social situation where he was comfortable! He bows in return, the formal gnome greeting of a senior to junior in the same profession, a mark of respect and the dwarf begins a conversation in gnomish. "Good of you to meet. My foster family is living in Trader's Corner, east side of Culverwood. ". And the light reparte continues.

He is fascinated in Palance's story, making so many things more clear from their recent days. "She must have heard of our actions with Gerard and saw her opportunity. And the rest matches the Commander's Story. "

The medals make the normally taciturn dwarf silent again. Silent in awe. The LEGION OF MERIT??? He never thought, he couldn't think... Standing when told, the silk ribbon and heavy medal rests on his chest, and Tinker can feel its weight; the weight of responsibility. He glances at the young gnome who served him and knows the eyes of every Trooper will always be on him and his battle-buddies from now on. So, time to stop thinking only of himself and mechanical puzzles!

Tinker is the first one to the podium! His bass voice reverberates in a controlled parade ground cadence to be heard anywhere in the pavilion. "We live for the Fist, we die for the Fist. That's our motto, but the Mailed Fist teaches more than that, it IS more than that. Listen to the story from commander Palence and the story's of the Agents recent fights and you will see what I mean."

"We take care of our own. To pay back the actions taken against us, or in retribution for evil done in our name, we take care of our own!"

"We find a way to win. Working with strategic allies like the battle of Aithimar, tactical maneuvers like the battle at Madam Wizard's Keep, or this morning when you keep on your feet and working to win after covered by magical green fire or with nothing but a dagger... we find a way to win!"

Tinker steps back and goes to 'parade rest', allowing another Agent to speak.

Pru is having a grand time. She reminds herself that jumping excitedly up and down on her toes is not proper behavior for a member of the Fist. Neither is whooping with joy when presented with a medal. She strives for dignity, but her grin is all but incandescent. She cheers Tinker's speech, but does not attempt one of her own.

Anna waves at the twins from her table with the Agents and then listens attentively while the commander tells them the story of Madam Wizard.

She stands to accept her Legion of Merit medal and then decides to address the crowd after Tinker had finished although the Dwarf is certainly a tough act to follow.

However she wouldn't be a good emissary for her Lady, her Lady's consort nor the fist if she did not take this opportunity and she has just the words to tie everything together.

"Thank you, everyone!" Anna says. "The Fist has certainly been going through a difficult time lately in the aftermath of the invasion of Alithmar. It is fortunate indeed that we were allowed to atone for our actions instead of being disbanded and so far we have been doing an exemplary job. Lord Eberyon was also permitted to atone by my Lady Queen Ma'ab and a group of adventurers and he too is proving worthy of that trust. I have personally gone through a transformation granted by my lady when I became a Morphling and so too has the Fist been transformed for the better in our efforts to make up for Neutronis's folly. The story of Madam Wizard proves that not all transformations are good though. Madam Wizard was transformed in death into that spiteful green hag wreathed in green flame who wanted nothing more than to see us all destroyed. We should take this time to reflect on transformations and moving forward always strive to change into a better version of ourselves. If we do this moving forward, there is nothing The Mailed Fist cannot achieve!"

Sigvar is floored by the presentation of the medal. He had seen Fists do great things, fight unwinnable battles and still prevail and yet he never thought HE would be awarded for doing his job.
He sits back down after the award, incapable of putting his feelings into words. As he listens to the others speak he holds and rubs the holy symbol around his neck. Mom would be proud. They faced an undead abomination and destroyed it. In doing so they spread the fame of the Fist and nudged it closer to being what it once was. Trusted, elite, and unstoppable.
His heart fills with pride and he feels his honor regained after slinking along following Neutronius just to survive.

Nikolai enjoys the feast and merriment but keeps an eye on the twins. This does not distract him though, and he receives the medal with pride. They protected not only the citizens of Citadel Town, but their own commander as well. He would have liked to have stayed closer to home hunting down the Son's of Pavilion but were sent far away on a more vital mission. Doing jobs here and there and getting fame out there is one thing, but defending one's own home is much more gratifying.

The story of Madam Wizard tied off some loose ends but he was not entirely satisfied. If she died once and her spirit reformed, it could happen again in another hundred years. They need to visit the ruins of her castle and verify there was no receptacle her spirit could return to and start over again.

He listened to his friends' speeches and did not think he could add to it but felt that the Thumb should say something. He waits until all have had a chance to speak before standing and giving his own.

"The Mailed Fist thanks the citizens of this town for their support in the past year. It has been hard on the organization, but you good people who have lived here for generations know the true spirit of the Mailed Fist and stuck by us. Today, we were tasked to protect you from a villainous foe, who's target was indiscriminate and some of you suffered loss. We lament that deeply.

In our work we do garner enemies. That can't be helped. But we have an obligation to protect you from them as much as the Citadel and we promise to continue to do our best. But because of the nature of our business, it also lies upon you to keep an ever watchful eye on possible dangers entering our town. Never hesitate to bring to our attention anything you see that is suspicious.

So, here is a toast to YOU, good citizens, for all that you do for the success of the Mailed Fist!"


He holds up his drink and takes a large gulp in honor of the town.

Tinker makes the first speech and then stands back to cheers to allow the others to speak. When he does, the gnome he spoke with slips up behind him and whispers in his ear, “I am Brenna.” She steps back, not sure if she’s allowed to talk to him while he is standing there, looking important, but she does not move far away.

Pru tries to hold herself in check when receiving the medal, but her huge smile gives her away. Anna steps up to the podium next to speak for the Fist and Ma’ab. The crowd cheers again when she is done. Sigvar sits down, overwhelmed. As he fingers the holy symbol, he feels another hand over his own and realizes the redheaded woman is still there, arm now around him, holding his hand.

Nikolai next addresses the crowd and is a hit. With his toast, the crowd explodes and there are clinks, clanks, and outright smashes of mugs as everyone toasts to the Fist and everyone and everything else they can think of. Palence nods to him in approval. The feast continues and the music starts back up. A few people, perhaps those who started earlier, wander out to the open space and start dancing to the music. The attendants are still quite attentive to those at the head table, quickly refilling any mugs that reach the halfway point. More food is brought from the nearby food pits to keep plenty of food on the table and plates. You can sense it has been a long time since this town has really had a good celebration, or perhaps even anything to celebrate.

Having only joined the group in the most recent battle, Pompous really doesn't have much to say. While it's nice to have his wondrous skills acknowledge. His tremendous bravery revered. Nikolai watches the fun festivities and finally wrestles up the courage to join the dancing. At home, parties had dancing and he had fun. There was this one girl... but here, it has been work, work, work, so much that he felt out of place on the dance floor.

Watching Pru having fun, though, was enough to bring himself back to his younger days some few years ago.

He takes a deep breath and catches Pru at a slower moment and asks her, "We spend so much time together warding off danger and fighting evil, how about this one dance together? Er, it would look good that we not only fight well together but get along well when the pressure is off. Hummm... right?" he grins with a very red faced blush.

Anna enjoys the festivities. She eats, drinks and is merry. She joins Pru in dancing catching the twins and doing a double dance with them & Pru.

When Nikolai asks Pru to dance Anna walks up to Pompous and says, "May I have this dance, brave sir ranger? We've only just started working together but the best way to get a measure of someone is either through dance or combat. We've experienced some of the latter now how about some of the former. I don't bite...at least not in this form." She says playfully teasing the archer.

Michael has been quiet during all of this. but a quiet pride and joy suffuses his being. He is deeply honored by the inclusion into the Legion of Merit, it is the greatest honor he has ever received. when the time comes to speak he pulls up a chair and does so.

Hail! my brothers and sisters! For you are my family! If Duty and Honor fail to hold our family strong then surely the blood we have shed for each other must! A wise man once said that Kings fight for power, Priests fight for souls, and Mercenaries fight for money! but I tell you now that while we receive coin for our work, when the chips are down, the flanks are threatened and the heavy horse are approaching fast! It is not money that we fight for! It is for the men and women beside us that we fight! We of the Mailed Fist are the finest army in the entire Wold! Our Honor is stong, it was forged in blood, our Duty is Iron forged in the heat of battle!
Some of you here, will make the Fist your home and some of you here will one day return to your hamlets and farms. but make no mistake, you are not the same person you were. You that have seen what you've seen! You that have done what you have done! You honor us with this party, it's an honor to be part of the Legion of Merit. but all I can say besides thank you is this. I was just doing my job. Any of you, ordered to do as we have been ordered could have done the same thing. it just so happens that our skills were needed for the tasks at hand. I seriously doubt that the commander would have ordered us to besige a keep or guard a wagon train or bolster a lards line troops. We would if ordered, surely, but one of the things that makes the Mailed Fist great is that we know how to place our people in the most effective and efficient way possible. So heres to you my Comrades!

The dancing and the celebrations continue into the night. Michael rises and gives another rousing toast and there are more mugs of ale slammed together. The ale supplies do seem to be quite neverending at this celebration. The music continues and all the people rejoice. The dancing starts up and a couple of the Fist join in the dancing and celebrations as well. Sigvar tries to watch what the large redheaded woman is doing and she takes it as a good sign. She slides around his side and tries to work his way onto his lap (Sense motive reveals that she likes Sigvar…). Commander Palence continues to remain seated for the most part, content to watch. The normally very stoic commander often smiles as the night continues along. A number of people come up to her to speak to her, as they do to many of the Fist. It does appear to be a night where no one is truly unhappy here.

Tinker listens to his companions speak (he doesn't think of them as speeches) and his heart is full. Late into the night, he eats and drinks and speaks with Brenna about home and crafting and other loves of life. He watches his friends dance and carouse, content to watch and not participate!

It is a very good day.

Sigvar slides his chair out a little, giving the redhead a chance to sit on his lap if that is what she wants so much. He continues to enjoy the feast and watch his fistmates revel and enjoy themselves. This was more common he thinks in the Bear company, but they were less reserved. They displayed their happiness at surviving a rough contract with a huge feast that was, well, less restrained than this one.

Anna enjoys her dance with Pompous, he is a skilled dancer and she is as impressed with his dance moves as she was his bow work. A ranged attack specialist will certainly come in handy considering most of the other group is focused on melee.

Pru's smile grows even wider when Nikolai asks her to dance. "Of course!" she exclaims, catching his hands eagerly.

Nikolai said one dance, but Pru attempts to stretch that to two, and then to three, and then to four.....

The night suddenly got a bit warmer as Pru takes his hands and they both twirl to the music. At home, this would have been an easy dance, with Pru, Nikolai is so worried he'll step on her toes he has trouble enjoying the first dance. When it is over he starts to pull away but feels Pru hanging on, to his relief. He relaxes and finally finds himself. The music is marvelous and he hopes Pru is having as much fun as he is.

'Thank you Pru. You are a marvelous dancer. Much better than I. I'm afraid though that I deprived dances with others that you may have wanted to dance with. I hope I have not been too clumsy to spoil your evening," he says, haltingly as he searches for the right words as a strange euphoria clouds his mind.

Michael spots Qualtmie the quartermaster sipping a drink and kind of off by herself. he hops down from the chair and runs over to her. he takes her by the hand and smiles Care to dance ma'am? he laughs as he gently pulls her onto the dance floor.

The dances continue. The Fist and the town has a good night and there aren’t even any fights. Some of the Fist get to know one another better and Sigvar has a new friend that starts whispering in his ear sweet nothings. Tinker has met a gnome that reminds him of home. Michael gets a little closer to Qualtmie as well. Eventually, the night starts to grow long. The commander tries to stifle a yawn, but eventually takes her leave, telling those around her that she will see them in the morning. Some of the people seem determined to spend the entire night at the party, while others start making their way back to their homes.

Knowing that he will still need to rise in the morning, Sigvar is wise enough to not stay all night. He speaks to the woman throughout the party though finding out about her and relating things about himself. When the hour starts to grow late he takes his leave after getting her name and finding out how to contact her. He knows he will need to rest because in the morning he begins his training in how to better use his allies flanking ability to expose weaknesses in his opponents.

Trayvin ducks out after the Commander leaves. Probably not going to offend anyone since she left first. In the morning it would be back to work. The party may be over but there were many loose ends to tie up.

Tinker knows to not leave a gathering until the Commander leaves; that's tradition! But he's also not a party animal, so says goodnight to Brenna and slips out with Sigvar, companionably walking back to the tower; the Minotaur and dwarf.

"Glad you are staying with us", he says to Sigvar.

Michael notices the Commander leave. My dear, the hour grows late, My commander has retired and it behooves me to follow her lead. I would see you again if you would have me, if not, This night has been wonderful, and you are a dream, I am content. he leans in for a kiss, if she stiffens he pecks her on the cheak, if she melts he follows through. Then he is away! his pallet underneath the bed is calling him and all things told this has been a wonderful day!

"Oh, but there wasn't! Anybody else...um, that I wanted...to um...." Pru's declaration starts out strong, but trails off and she begins blushing furiously. "I mean, that was fun. I mean, you're a good dancer." Suddenly, she is aware of how much hair has escaped her braid with all her flinging about. And true, Nikolai has seen her covered in ash and gnoll guts, but this is different somehow. Hastily, she smooths her hair. "Uh, we should...we should do that again. Sometime."

Nikolai realizes that if any of them are to be coherent for their meeting with their commander in the morning, it's time to let this night end. After their current dance, he kisses Pru on the back of her hand and tries his best to express how wonderful the evening was for him and how he hoped it was likewise for her.

"Alas, work begins anew in the morning. We don't want the new heroes disheveled and bleary eyed for the Commander, now do we?" he tries to grin as he gives Pru a hug and sets to follow the rest of the Fist to their quarters.

"Why thank you Pompous for the dance. I really enjoyed it." Anna says curtsying to the Ranger, "You really are a fine dancer, We'll have to do this again some time..."

Anna would have liked to stay at the party all night and maybe perhaps one day her lady will grant her another transformation, one in which she would no longer need sleep but that day has not yet arrived so she too heads to bed when the rest of her companions do so.

After the commander leaves, the group is quick to make their own exits. Sigvar entertains the woman who simply tells her, “Come on down to the dry duck and ask for Big Red. Anyone there can find me!” Before he can depart, she leaves him with a wet, sloppy kiss. Michael gives Qualtmie a kiss and then quickly departs. There are some other flames perhaps growing, that need attending, but the group decides to not spend the entire night out and heads for their quarters.

Morning comes early and sounds of birds chirping invade the sleeping chambers of the group. A new day has come for the newly minted heroes.

Sigvar wakes with a full tummy and a contented feeling. He heads out to the practice yard and after going through his sword forms heads out to find his instructor for training in flanking tactics.

Trayvin washes up and then goes to the mess hall for breakfast. After overeating the previous night, he keeps the meal light. Selecting some fruit and a biscuit he eats while listening to see how everyone's night went.

Tinker wakes all at once, as is usual for the dwarf. Morning exercise, followed by a wash, breakfast, and then off to the armory to assist as he can with the armors and more specialized tools of the warrior and roguish trades.

Nikolai notices that Pru seems just as nervous as he. Fortunately, his meditation training helps him keep his composure better and his nervousness hidden. "Yes, we should do this more often. Once a year at least," he smiles. "You did great Pru. You could put my dance moves to shame if you tried. Thanks for not humbling me too much."

Sleep does not come quickly, his mind turning the day over many times. The dancing with Pru crowding out his thoughts about Madam Witch and if she could possibly return. Exhaustion finally takes over and he falls asleep.

He wakes at reveille and spends the first hour in meditation getting his daily spells ready, then heads to the mess hall for breakfast. Despite the feast the night before he eats heartily. You never now when your next meal will be. Then, after a quick clean up, he gathers the rest of the Fist and heads towards the commander's office.

Pru floats rather than walks back to the barracks, or at least that's how it feels. In the morning, she makes sure to tidy her hair before going to breakfast. She makes sure to cast Extended Mage Armor on Nikolai, because it's their standard procedure. And it's a touch spell, which is a nice bonus.

Anna wakes refreshed the next morning and idly strums on her darkwood guitar a bit before heading down to the mess hall for breakfast.

She grabs some porridge, biscuits and fruit.
