Homeward Bound

DM JeffO
Wednesday January 18th, 2017 9:50:17 AM

The group prepares for the trip home and discussion continues regarding the recent events. Michael counts about 1,500 gold worth of silver in the large pile as he helps load it into the wagon. There is no sign of the dragon as the Anna helps prepare the animals for the trip home. Were the leprechauns just playing a prank? It did seem a bit coordinated. Was the clerk in on the joke? Why did the town care so much about a bandit, anyway?

The day proceeds nicely with a warm sun and clear skies. There is a light breeze blowing from the south keeping it from getting too hot. The group figures if they ride all day they should have no problem reaching the citadel by nightfall where they can report back and hopefully Nikolai will be officially restored as the thumb of the group.

As the group starts considering a place to stop for lunch, the road turns a corner and the group stops. A distance down the road (around 300 feet) there is a clear blockage in the road. Perception, DC 20: Highlight to display spoiler: {There are three very large (over nine feet tall), shaggy, humanoid-looking things completely blocking the road.}. It is still half a day’s travel to the citadel, but this is certainly out of the ordinary for this location. The area here is some forest and some brushy grasslands with open area all around. There are a couple small hills off to the left of the road and blue, clear sky above. The road continues past the blockage towards the citadel. The area to the right side of the road is flat and clear and the wagon could easily pass beyond the blockage on that side. The left side has a ditch, rocks, and is much less clear.

Tinker, minding the wagon, doesn't notice much about other than the unusual traffic jam. He calms the horse with a quick click of his tongue. "Now calm, Bildie, take some grass now. "

Anna gains scent from her now reptilian form and sniffs the air as Nikolai, Sigvar and her check it out. She is so distracted by scents that she makes as much noise as her tiny form allows which still isn't much considering but something with sharp senses would still notice the tiny green dinosaur making it's way through the brush.

The group pauses at the blockade, but only Michael is able to make any sense out of the blockage. He points out that the blockage appears to be some sort of huge shaggy creatures. Nikolai, Sigvar, and Anna start closing the distance to the blockage to check it out. On the way, Anna turns into a small dinosaur so that she can sniff the air. As soon as she gets a whiff, she regrets having an increased sense of smell. The wind blows the scent of the blockage towards her and she almost gags from the smell. The smell is that of something rotting mixed with an earthy smell of very old things. It is a bit like some rotten eggs mixed with some moldy straw. It is not pleasant.

After the scouting group has moved about halfway to the creatures (about 150 feet away), the others can start to smell a bit of the smelly smell. It is more clear from this distance that there are indeed three nine-foot tall, shaggy, ugly, smelly humanoid creatures standing in the road. They are doing nothing other than standing there, almost immobile. You realize they are not statues not only by the smell, but when the one of the left moves to scratch an itch.

With the leaders of the Fist in hiding or hanging back with the wagon, Sigvar is kinda on his own here in the middle of the road. The creatures in the road arent any bigger than he is, and as far as he can see, are not armed or armored. Since they stand on two legs he assumes they have some understanding of what they are doing, intentionally blocking the road, so he assumes they mean harm to passers by. He has not been contracted to make the road to the Citadel safe, but this is something no average farmer or merchant is prepared to deal with, So Sigvar does.
He steps further away from the bushes and calls out in a loud clear voice to the creatures.
" Hey! This is a road! Get off of it and stop lurking about! Leave now and there will be no trouble!"

Sigvar stands up and squeaks at the large beasts in the road from a distance of 150 feet. As the creatures slowly shift about, Anna joins him in the form of a massive sabretooth tiger. As the two attempt to stare down the creatures, they can see in the shagginess of the beasts that they have large, long, pointed claws. They do not appear to respond to the threats, intimidation, or instructions to move.

Trayvin, still 150 feet back from the two, secures the horses and prepares for battle with Tinker. Michael and Pru move up behind Sigvar and Tiger-Anna while Nikolai shifts off to the side. Michael thinks about all that he knows about dungeons and the underground, but these creatures don’t really fit the description of anything he has seen or knows about as far as underground creatures go.

Nikolai cannot really get into a flanking position yet, as the group is still over a football field away from the monsters. He does move closer to them so that he is now the closest to the beasts (about 100 feet away). He thinks about what he knows about monsters and he knows that this group really stinks. The more he thinks about it, they smell a little like a swamp.

The large Anna-Tiger moves forward and the rest of the group moves with her. She stares at the creatures as if she is trying to do something, but the creatures simply stand there. From this distance the rest of the group can smell them now and see the large black eyes staring at the group, long, sharp claws hanging at their sides.

Michael tries to sense something from the creatures, but they just stare back at him with their cold, dead eyes while Pru suggests that the group “shoo them out of the road.” Tinker looks around as the group moves and sees that the road looks pretty normal. There are signs of passage, but not too recently. It would appear this “blockade” is less than a day old. Sigvar cannot see any reason that the creatures are just standing there, blocking the road.

Meanwhile, over in the edge of the trees under cover, Nikolai continues his own advance. He reaches a point where he can see past the creatures and there is nothing there but the road continuing on towards the citadel. He cannot see anything behind them or anything out of the ordinary at all.

" I'm not used to having such diverse Fist mates. But none of you can speak in a tongue that they understand? Not even with Magic? That's too bad."
Sigvar had been taught to always use his senses to figure things ut, his mother had insisted he learn how to notice things as a child. She had given him puzzles and riddles to make him think before acting. The others were right, something about them didn't add up. They stood in one place, they didn't make any noise, just stood around and , well, stood there. Could they be an illusion? wasn't the group being plagued by some Leprechauns? wouldn't those Fey find this side-splittingly funny? Sigvar stood his ground and really LOOKED at them.
Perception 26
Then he tried to see if they were really there.
This may be dumb, but are we sure they are real? sure they stink, but they aren't moving or really reacting to us, nor are they making any sounds. I don't know what Leprechauns can do as far as magic, but this is something that if I were able to make illusions, would amuse me to no end."
Having said that, Sigvar sheathes his blade and steps up to the creatures and touches one of them. He pushes on it a bit to see if it has mass and waits to see if they use those claws to try and shred him.

Spells in effect: Mage armor

Nikolai watches for a moment what happens when Sigvar pokes at the shaggy swamp beasts. Their behavior seems very planned, not a random thing. How long had they been here? The traffic on the road seems normal, with no remains or evidence of battle, so if they've been here a while, it was for a specific purpose.

"And that purpose must be to find us," he mumbles.

Unfortunately, communication seems a problem, so to know why they came will be difficult. There must some some commonality that they think links them, creatures from a swamp, and the Agents. That something must be involving the swamp, the only common place the Agents and these creatures share.

So what would bring such swamp creatures this far searching for them?

The vegepymies were able to communicate with the Agents and work together against the gnolls. Could these creatures want their help too? Only one way to find out.

With Sigvar poking the creatures, Nikolai comes out of the woods and heads towards the three shaggy creatures. If they do nothing to harm Sigvar or the others, he approaches them, then in the dirt draws a pictures of a flindbar.

Anna-Tiger stays still and carefully observes the beasts. Something does seem a bit off about them, but she’s just not quite sure what. From what she can tell, they might be under a spell of some kind, but she can’t quite tell exactly if they are, or what even it could be. Could they be held? They seem to be shifting about and moving their eyes enough that it doesn’t seem likely. They’re clearly not paralyzed. Could there be some other magical power holding them still? They can move their feet, so they are not trapped physically…

Michael suggests watching a bit more, but Tinker has had enough standing around. He moves around the side of Sigvar and yells at the beasts to move. One of them turns its eyes to look at Tinker, but it does nothing else. Pru, Trayvin, and Nikolai watch and think as Sigvar moves forward.

Sigvar suspected they were illusions. He stared hard at them, but they did not disappear. He decides to step forward and close the distance between them and he reaches out to touch them. Before he can reach them, rather suddenly, the air is filled with the smell of rot and lots of fur. The beasts reach out with their long arms and sharp claws. Fortunately Sigvar has full plate on and many of the claws slash and scratch the plate mail without finding purchase. One claw, however, slices into his shoulder, drawing blood (10 damage). All three of the creatures have struck out at Sigvar.

A slighter better map?

Whelp. That was a bust Michael mumbles to himself as he moves forward to engage the beasts. He notices their long arms and being the cautious fellow he is he jukes and tumbles to get inside their guard. He takes the one on the left, reasoning that most creatures are right handed it will make it more difficult for it to get to him and also open it up for Sigvars attack. He'll try to get into a flanking positon once the rest of the crew piles in. he wonders as he is going forward if these things are some sort of ambush predator, with their long arms they could probably reach all the way to the other side of the road. he thinks he's going to call them road bugbears.

Michael takes off and heads for the stinky monsters, moving around to attempt to get behind them. Sigvar wastes no time in drawing his sword and taking a swing at the monster in front of him (#2). His shoulder burns where he was struck, but his sword hits and chops through the thick fur of the beast, resulting in a splash of nasty-smelling blood. Tinker starts towards the creatures, but decides that attacking from behind is where he can do the most damage. He runs around, staying out of reach of the massive creatures.

Anna-Tigress rushes forward and attempts to dodge under the claws of the beast. As she closes, she feels the claw slash out and slice into her back (5 damage). The cut burns as she jumps up and bites into the disgusting pile of fur with her sharp teeth. Her teeth find purchase and she holds on tightly (grapple started). The creature reaches out with its claws and attempt to push her away, but her jaws hold tightly (attempted to escape grapple, failed).

Trayvin casts prayer and everyone but Nikolai can feel the warmth of the prayer spell affecting them! Pru carefully takes a few steps forward and then fire off her ray. Nikolai also shifts towards the rear of the creatures as he casts a spell on himself.

The two not grappled monsters continue their attack on the obvious target, Sigvar. The first monster’s claws bounce easily off the armor, not even leaving a mark. But the second monster takes advantage of Sigvar’s stance and slips a claw into the space of the armor at his neck, slicing deeply (critical, 15 damage).

As the group is starting to really close in on the garbage creatures, both Pru and Trayvin are suddenly shocked with a massive electric shock (Pru: 2 electrical damage; Trayvin: 14 electrical damage)! Two will-o-wisps have suddenly appeared right next to them and have attacked them (Note: It will take others a perception 24 to notice these wisps because everyone is quite focused on the beasts.) The group can also hear a cackling laughter from somewhere off to the south of the battle.

Sigvar ignores the beast grappling with the Tiger. As he see's it the beast is in for a world of hurt. He does hear cries behind him and glances back to see two balls of light, probably the Will o' Wisps mentioned by the Fist, attacking behind the group. He calls out a warning about them to the others.

Sigvar continues attacking one of the beasts, his sword drawing forth more nasty blood. His other attacks seem almost to be absorbed by the fur of the beast as they fail to appear to affect it. At the same time, Tinker moves up behind it and slams into the rear of the monster viciously! It slumps to the ground from the massive blow. Right next to them, Anna in the form of a Tiger, quickly manages to shove the beast to the ground and her mouth grips its fur as she tries to hold it down. As they fight, Nikolai steps forward and slams the creature in the head, knocking it senseless, at least for the moment, so it does not struggle and try and escape. At the same time, Michael steps up to the other creature and slips his blades deep into the massive beast, splattering himself with its blood. The other beast (#3) continues to mindlessly attack Sigurd, drawing blood with its dirty claws once again (5 damage).

Meanwhile, Trayvin steps away from the Wisp that attacked him and casts a spell to protect himself from more electricity. Pru also steps back so she can get a clear shot and attacks the Wisp next to her. However, the wisp next to Pru flies forward towards her again and zaps her with another small bolt of electricity (4 more electrical damage). The other wisp senses the dying beast and quickly zips over towards the larger battle. It spots Michael at the edge and surprises him with a massive shock (14 electrical damage).

About that time, Pru and Trayvin see the source of the laughter from the south. Rising out of a ditch is not a leprechaun, but the image of a beautiful woman floating up and hovering above the ground. She looks slightly insubstantial and her hair is wild and dark. There are strange green flames surrounding her body and she laughs as she looks over at the group. She points at the largest target, Sigvar, and a small green bolt flies through the air at him. The bolt slams into his armor and bursts into green flames that burn him immensely (25 damage!) (Sigvar, will save, DC 22, please. On failure: Highlight to display spoiler: {You are bathed in the green flames and you gain the sickened condition: -2 on all attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.} She laughs as the flames singe his fur.

Sigvar is immolated by the fire. Most soldiers would panic, but he was born into the Mailed Fist and they were the best trained soldiers in the Wold. The smell of his burning hair and hide does however turn his stomach and while choking back a mouthful of bile he taunts her.
" Do you really think tht lighting me on fire will stop me from gutting your minions and then working my way to you? Hardly. It just means I need to try harder now."
Sigvar notes that Anna is trying to subdue the creature rather than kill it. While he is pretty sure the beasts are mere pawns and would rather be anywhere else, There are more threatening targets on the field.
" Anna, There's a flying witch lady back here lighting fires."
Sigvar turns to the beast with Michael directly behind it and attacks it.

Nikolai takes a quick survey and thinks quickly. After their return from the swamp, he studied the wisps and remembers how they regenerated off the fear of the dying. How, as evil intelligent creatures, they enticed the gnolls to the Agent's hidden position and nearly caused the death of them all. If not for their friend's sacrifice, they might have succeeded.

"As long as these shaggy things are alive, the wisps will feed off their dying life force. Either tie up those that are down or kill them quickly."

Anna continues holding onto her pin of the first of the creatures and beats it with her long fangs, attempting to beat it into submission. The creatures shakes its head and squirms beneath her. A moment later Anna realizes that she no longer is in control, but the beast has escaped the grapple.

Tinker, Sigvar, Trayvin and Michael all converge on one of the beasts in a pile. It takes quite a few of the blows from the Agents, but eventually the succumbs to the series of blows and falls in a disgusting, smelly pile on the ground. Trayvin considers whether the woman is undead, but he can’t tell from this distance.

Nikolai sees that the Agents appear to have the beasts in hand, so he runs around the side and attempts to strike out at the wisp. The wisp moves with amazing speed and dodges just out of his reach. The wisp ignores Nikolai and continues focusing on Michael with another electrical zap. Michael is fortunate as the electricity seems to miss him and flows directly into the ground this time.

Pru steps back from her wisp to attempt to aid Sigvar, but the wisp flows with her. While she tries to watch the woman casting, she is quite distracted by the additional electrical shock from the wisp (11 electrical damage). Michael turns and screams at the nearby wisp, stabbing it repeatedly. Pru ignores the wisp near her and also attacks that same wisp, hoping to take it down. Nikolai moves around to also attack the same creature. Instead of giving up, the wisp attacks Michael once again with another shock (10 damage). The other wisp continues blasting Pru with more electricity (15 damage).

Tinker shifts over to the last remaining beast and slams into it while Anna-Tiger continues her own attacks, once again grabbing the monster who now seems rather limp in her paws.

Sigvar quickly steps around the chaos and bodies and heads over towards the woman. He reaches the edge of the ditch and pauses. He can now see clearly that the ditch drops almost straight down at the edge. The ditch is about 20 feet deep at its lowest point and the woman is hovering in the air. Sigvar can run down into the ditch, but he will still not be able to reach the woman.

Trayvin tries to help out with healing. To avoid healing the beast, he steps a little south of the road and the healing can reach all but Anna, Tinker, and Pru, but also reaches the wisp.

The floating woman throws another green bolt, this time at the screaming Michael, but the bolt hits the ground at his feet. SON OF A &*%$!

Michael shouts as he looks wildly around himself for more enemies. Realizing that they have disappeared he stalks angrily around the area looking for something to kill. The flow is different this time, there is a desperate flavor for completeness in it, and he has a sneaking suspicion that the Whisp just used them to kill, just like they used the Gnolls to kill Tinker. He goes over and checks the Trash monsters and sees if there is anything he can do for them. There is probably nothing he can do, but the action calms his blood lust, and now he just feels sad. curious he looks the monsters over well. Are they flesh and bood? plant based? He tries to make a detailed list of descriptions to use when he gets back to the Citadel. He is curious to find out what these things were/are.

With a queasy turn he shambles back to the group. As he walks he taps the tattoo on the inside of his forearm and his hamd glows briefly before some of the burns heal ( cure light wounds tattoo 7 healing).
He looks at Michael, stalking around like a bloodraging barbarian and tries to couch his question so as not to offend the halfling.
" So you guys have run into things like this before? That woman was floating, 20 feet off the ground she was floating. That presents a problem, especially if the is incorporeal. She doesn't figure the creatures were fey as her claws and bite did as much damage as expected but they could still be animals, plants, magical beasts or some sort of humanoid.

Michael is infuriated that the wisps have escaped him. Sigvar works on some healing and tries to calm Michael, or at least not make him more angry.

Meanwhile, Tink starts checking the bodies of the two dead beasts. It is quite a smelly job. Nikolai wonders what they should do with the remaining beast that groans a bit on the ground. Trayvin ponders the woman, but he does not recognize the spell or the flames at all. Perhaps it was not a spell at all? He prepares for the waking up of the remaining beast. Pru mentions her pain and Sigvar provides her with a bit of healing.

Anna leaves the unconscious beast and heads for the pit. It is very easy for her to follow the path, clearly these beasts had come out of the ditch. In fact, just a short distance into the pit she follows the tracks to a pile of rocks that appear to be some sort of shelter. Inside the sheltered area the stink of the beasts is even stronger and she spots a few bones, bits of fur, and a pile of stuff. It appears to be a relatively new place, not a lair that has existed a long time, though the pile of treasure is rather large for such a small cache. She sees no sign of the woman.

Note: Those affected by the flames and sickness are still affected. There are light green flames flickering around your body without creating any heat or pain. The sickened condition still applies.

Anna finds the treasure and spends the requisite time sniffing around for any trace of the flying green woman from where she was last seen. She then sees to the creature. She spends a full round pulling a pair of large manacles with an average lock from her bag and then uses them to secure the creatures arms. After she has finished that she activates her enlarge person SLA and drags the bodies of the slain creatures down into the ditch away from the one that is still alive.

"Don't kill the one I incapacitated. I'm going to study the anatomy of the dead ones to try to figure out if they are one of my lady's creations. If our friend here is one of my lady's children I want to help it get to somewhere where it can live without being a danger to others. Maybe a swamp?"

Once she is out of sight of the living creature she cuts into one of the dead ones trying to get a clue as to what manner of being the creatures are, offering a prayer to Ma'ab before she cuts into it. "Dear Lady, I'm sorry if these beasts we slayed were some of your creations. I suspect they were manipulated into being where they were. I'm trying to get to the bottom of this and I did my best not to kill the creature I was fighting."

He had built them up in his mind into peaceful forest creatures. but with this load of loot, those guys have been preying on folk for quite some time. He was about to offer to put down the last one, but it seems his companions have other plans. He helps with getting the loot sorted and identified. Counting the gold since he has no magic.

Nikolai Assists Anna and Tinker, specially in carrying the dead shaggies down into the pit. He tries to be reverent but has difficulty feeling the same way as Anna. For him, it was a necessary thing for their own survival. Depriving the wisps of their energy source was necessary. He is glad, at least for now, that the one he stunned survived. Perhaps they'll be able to learn how they came to be here and why.

"This treasure seems quite impressive for unintel... well, for these creatures."

Nikolai figures that determining what type of spell the green fire ray was could determine if the leprechauns were still involved in some sort of illusory trickery or if the floating lady was real.

"Looks like we got some research to do back at the Citadel. Anna, sorry about these creatures, but with them swiping at us, it was hard to get to the wisps. Maybe a spell that can freeze creatures should be in our repertoir?"

While Anna dissects the creature, he takes up a guard position on the road. He wouldn't put it past any leprechauns just yet.

Anna continues to search for traces of the woman, but the overwhelming stench from the beasts really hampers her effects and she finds no trail at all. She carefully ties up the creature left alive and examines the others. She determines that the creatures are simply beasts. They are not magical, created, or anything else. They look like simple predators from a swamp. She carefully buries the bodies of the dead.

The rest of the group piles up and counts the treasure as the remaining beast starts to wake up and struggle in its bonds.

Nikolai watches the road and sees a few birds flying in formation a distance away in the direction from which the group had come. Back towards the citadel, he sees a few clouds starting to gather together in the otherwise clear sky.

While animals do fall under the dominion of my lady, these ones don't appear to be special creations of her or anyone else like a monstrologer. With that being said the 3 creatures did look out of place and animals generally are limited in their intelligence so I am unsure if they put the pile of gear in that cave or if the encounter was manipulated to make us think they did. Furthermore I still was once a druid and do consider myself an ally of nature and would like to help this creature get to a swamp, potentially one that isn't well traveled. I have a few ideas with how to handle this creature and I even have some credit left in my bag of tricks. I only have enough money in the bag to pay for a single first level spell scroll. I can grab a scroll of charm animal and it will be my friend for an hour, provided the creature doesn't resist the effects of the spell or I can grab a scroll of speak with animals and attempt to question it. Personally I'd rather question the creature as if I did that we could at least potentially get some intel. I could always try to make it my friend tomorrow when I put more gold in the bag. I just need to make sure to pull something from the bag worth 10 gold after I grab the scroll and before the day ends so I can put more coins in tomorrow. If I speak to it, I'll only have a minute so what questions should I ask?"

Michael thinks about the ambush, the dragon, the leprechauns and all the weird stuff that's happened of late. If I were ramroding this to get to the agents what would I do? there is a lot he does not know. how many of "them" there are, what the limits of their resources are, what their ultimate plan is. What does he know? well, they have it out for us, they are trying to hamper us at every turn...every turn.... suddenly it all become clear to him.

Hey guys, gather round for a bit I think I might have figured something out. we are being led into a trap. The charges against Nikolai were to get us out of the citadel and onto their territory. The Dragon was to test us, maybe whittle us down a bit, and cofirm that we were there. they probably put the leprechauns up to doing this as a joke, The "witch and the Will-o-Wisps were to pin our location down and whittle our strength down some more. I'm thinking that if we continue on this road the way we are going sometime before we reach the Citadel we are going to get hit and hit hard. if it were me, once the witch got back and reported contact I'd probably start moving my force up the road toward us, at least put out pickets to track us as we move down. Now the fact that they have sent out penny packets to harry us, probably means that they don't have an overwhelming force, but they woudn't be doing this if they didn't have some sort of advantage in place to give them better odds. that means that they want us to run into them, but they want it on their terms.

What we need to do is run into them on our terms! and that means either delaying our running into them, running into them before they are ready or circumventing them. The probably have an expectation that we may camp for the night, we got hit pretty hard, so we can't just camp here to delay them. our best bet would be to go back to town if we were to try to delay.

If we got on our horse and rode like smoke and oakum toward the citadel we might hit them before they are ready, but we also take the chance of hitting them ready or passing through their lines without even knowing it.
Sgt Taggert used to say that the easy was was always a trap, rough hills were always covered by archers and roads were just killboxes wating to happen. I think we need to get off the road and cut trail through the woods, go deep and then angle back up to come in at the citadel. then we can get a few units of men to follow us and we sweep back up the road toward this location. Unless we have some way of contacting the citadel, then we just march down the road and catch them in a pincer movement with fist froces from behind.

"Well Michael's observation changes things. I technically have a way to communicate with the citadel. It will mean we will have to forgo talking to swamp thing and it isn't guaranteed to work as it is a blood witch spell so a ley line could shift unfavorably but I can cast animal messenger from a scroll get us a hawk and compel it to take a written message to the citadel. It could get there in the duration of the spell but it will take time. The hawk flies at about 6 miles per hour so it would most likely reach there 3 hours at most (OOC: Going by distance a cart covers in a day since it was stated they could reach the citadel today w/ a cart) but it would at least let us send a message to the commander. As the beast starts shaking off his unconsciousness, the group discusses what to do next. Looking around, there are clearly no large swamps nearby. The area here is mostly grassland with some rolling hills. There may be some small swampy depressions, but none are visible from your current location.

Trayvin channels some healing and examines Sigvar. He does not recognize the ailment, but because he can reach out and touch the green flames, he suspects the source of the problem is magical instead of something natural (meaning that it is a magical effect, not just magic was used to cause an illness).

In fact I think I could potentially forgo the spell and pull a second cart from the bag of tricks instead so that anyone watching the decoy camp would still see a cart. I honestly don't know if I could pull a cart from the bag, but it could be worth a try. I think I could lift a cart if I wasn't carrying anything else and a cart is only worth 15 gold so I could try to grab one. Technically we wouldn't need the spell if we were sending some of our number to the citadel anyway. "We've never asked the Citadel for help before, I'd rather not start now. More important than sending a message to the Citadel to alert them of our situation and position, is to interrogate this creature if possible, then let it go.
Our next thing would be to hide the cart, which shouldn't be that hard in these woods, then cut a trail to the Citadel through the hills. I've got a good map so we can easily avoid roads and towns.

Instead of asking for them to jump out and get us by using the road, if we foil them often enough, they'll eventually make a mistake.

So, if we do the cold camp - hot camp thing tonight and that does not pan out. I'd suggest hide the wagon and trail blaze it to the Citadel.

Pru frowns, and starts thinking out loud. "The farmer said the road was clear. Of course, anybody waiting to ambush us wouldn't jump out and attack him. And, given that he didn't seem to see the swamp creature, he probably wouldn't have noticed an ambush lying in wait."

She looks at her companions. "Can we take the wagon off the road? Because I think that's the way to go; avoid the road, get back to the Citadel, gather reinforcements, and sweep back this way. An animal messenger is all very well, but messages can be garbled or misunderstood--or the Citadel may be facing some crisis and be unable to send help. So if we can, I'd like to go off the road."

She looks at the wagon, considering. "Or, if we can't take it with us, can we conceal it someplace? Return to the Citadel on foot, then pick up the wagon when we come back this way?"

She turns to Anna. "If we just release that creature, what will it do, do you suppose? Is it free of whatever spell kept it here? Will it just wander off in search of swampland? Or will it be a threat to travelers?"

Nikolai still resists the urge to 'help' in the decision making. Pru needs to learn to take command in case something really happens to him. Of course, the others are experienced too. But Command isn't as easy as it seems when suddenly the decisions you make can cause harm or death to your friends.

Nikolai returns from his hiding place and joins the conversation.

"Does this wagon have any sentimental value that we can't leave it behind? We leave it behind for some lucky farmer with a note that it is a gift from the Mailed Fist and waste no more time with it. Our report will simply state that it was sacrificed for benefit of stealth and speed."

Nikolai hops in and starts unloading the wagon, distributing the gear to his friends.

"Anna, do the language thing. There's no guarantee, but it's our best bet to discover what's going on, or at least get a stop closer, then let's move out."

Once the wagon is unloaded and the gear and loot distributed as best as possible, he takes out his map of the region and studies it for the best rout through the hills towards home.

The farmer goes on his way, nodding and waving as he departs. When he leaves, the group continues to discuss their next move. Pru asks a few questions before making a final decision and Nikolai lets her be the thumb while Tinker puts the wheel back on the wagon perhaps better than it was on before. Nikolai and Michael start unloading the wagon as Anna heads over to the creature.

She has no trouble casting the spell and she asks a number of questions of the monster. While it seems to understand her, it stares at her and wiggles in its constraints. Finally it says, “Me hungry. Want food.” It looks around at the others and sees no one else of its kind. It continues, “Me leave you, no hurt. Me go home.” She does not observe any signs that it is under any magical constraints or effects.

Anna works with the creature. Looking it over, it is quite clear from the stench, claws, and teeth that the creature is a meat-eater. It is likely a scavenger as well. She presumes there is little that the thing wouldn’t eat if it were hungry enough. She pulls out some meat (a few silver, maybe) and the creature jumps at the chance to eat it. It sloppily devours all that Anna gives it. When she asks about the road and the woman, the creature spits some meat at Anna while it answers, “Woman say food in road, me wait and food come to me. Me no hunt.” After she lets it go, it takes a last look around, then moves quickly off into the brush towards the north. It makes a great deal of noise crashing through the brush and trees as it heads away.

" Um, Michael? I admire your desire to break trail, but I am better suited to the task. May I?"
Sigvar reaches back and removes a shovel from his pack.
A shovel? you may wonder.
One edge of the shovel glistens as if sharpened. When he starts swinging it like an axe it proves to be just as capable as one.
" A friend, one of the best smiths I have had the pleasure to know, made this for me. He said that a soldier has limited room for tools in their kit, so combining them when possible just made sense. This shovel can dig a fortification, cut the trees and stakes to reinforce it and drive them with the flat side. Further I don't need to carry and axe, hammer and shovel to accomplish all of those tasks."
Sigvar's mood sobers as he thinks about his friend.
"Aloias is no longer with us now. He was a decent soldier and an exceptional smith. Decades ago he made this armor for my Great Great Grandfather, Herkamir. Through time it has been passed down from one soldier in our clan to another. Each time he resized it and made it fit the wearer both in shape and fighting style. He had served as the master smith in the Bear Company for almost a century. Though he couldn't have been my father, he taught me a great deal about the non combat side of soldiering. Even in death he taught me a lesson..."
Sigvar pauses, not sure he should continue, but knowing that his new Fist needed to know him, all of him. He sighs and plunges on, determined that they hear this from him and not as gossip when they return to the Citadel.
" When Neutronious declared that the Fist would have a country, Aloias was shaken. He knew better than most of us that the way we were headed was not the way of the Mailed Fist. He left his forge, where I had been helping with the bellows since we were between campaigns and marched to Runkuk's lodge. He announced himself and stated that he would no longer be able to serve the Fist if it was going to deviate so far from it's original charter. He said that the siege that was planned and the conquet of a former employer was wrong. Well, that was what he was going to say at least. Runkuk turned and, without hesitation, buried Brainbiter in Aloias's forehead, er chest, well it hit him in the forehead and ended up in his chest. My mother always told me to observe with all my senses and learn from all I saw, heard, smelled, touched and tasted. That day I learned that our company was on the side of taking that land and making a home for the Fist, no matter if it was right or wrong. You were with the Fist, or meat on the floor. Aloias had been a huge asset to the Fist and he was discarded out of hand. That day he taught me that I could speak my mind and join him on the floor, or stay silent, do what I could to stay out out of the fight and maybe it would be alright. You and your Agents made it all right."
" I stayed silent, lost some of my honor, and stayed out of the fighting. I was green then, only my Fist knew what I could do. I surrendered once the battle was joined and was held for trial by the civilian authorities. I was found to not have participated in the atrocities that took place. While I awaited trial I helped rebuild their city. When I was freed I sought out the Agents and applied to be admitted. And here I am. I thought it only fair that you hear that from me, not from the rumor mill at the Citadel. They didn't like me much there, bad blood I guess. That's why when I was offered the chance to meet you on the road rather than wait for you to return I jumped at it."

Sigvar returns to hacking a path for them back to the Citadel.

Sigvar takes the lead with his fancy shovel-axe-machete-hammer. As he works through the brush, he tells a tale of his time before joining the rest of the group. The group follows him along as he speaks. The brush is not too thick here and by moving Sigvar can easily lead the group through the forest and surrounding area, roughly paralleling the road. The story is informative and entertaining and before long the group can see the citadel.

By taking the longer route and avoiding the road, the travel has taken longer and the darkness is quickly growing as the day disappears. There are a few people about around the citadel, as usual, and the guards are posted at the gate. The small town around the walled fortress has a few trails of smoke leading into the sky, likely from the main tavern in town.

Michael listens closely to the tale of the big minotaur. It was a bad deal all around. he thinks for a moment then speaks. You know Me, Tinker, Trayvin, Anna and a Dwarf named Thak were the ones to put an end to Unruk. Tinker was the one to give him the coup de grace. I cut his head off and showed it to everybody. That kind of took the fight out of the rest of the troops. the clerics of Ffoy had caused cracks to open up in the ground, we had fallen into one with Unruk, Pru and Nikolai had fallen into another with Neutroinis. . He shakes his head. I tried to rally what was left of the force, I wanted them to form ranks and march back to camp. once the seige was broken I feared what the citizens would do to the remnants of the force. The clerics did a good job forstalling all that, but it was a near thing. Neutronis ran Nikolai through, then surrendered, coward that he was, but the gods brought Nikolai back to us. That's all over now, but the chief cause is still around. We don't have a home. We are just one bad rumor away from being cast out at best or labled as bandits at worst.
