DM Warren - It feels good to help.
Wednesday April 27th, 2016 3:43:38 PM

Tinker is excited to have another job where he can employ his skills to their utmost.

Michael struggles with his past, bristling at the idea of helping the city that let him down. He just has to remember that he's really doing it for the townsfolk of Cove, just like he helping those of Echo Dwelling. The guard contingent was 10 soldiers and an officer. Word said that the bandits were only seen a few at a time, but it may be more than expected if they were able to dispatch a group of trained soldiers. The sightings of bandits have been going on for sometime, but it's not impossible to think that some of the former Fist members have joined with them. That will be something to include in your report. They may be former allies, but if they're trying to kill you or innocent townsfolk, don't hesitate to put them down.

Trayvin is excited as well, and immediately begins planning out what supplies they may need. Cove is between here and Ailthmar, so it makes the most sense to just head straight there and see what you can find out. You can leave the correspondence with Ailthmar to me. Cove is a fishing village on the coast, so you may deal with some rain. Plan accordingly.

Constance takes some papers off of a large map of the area and points to a small dot on the coast almost directly East of the Citadel. It makes most sense to travel overland to Cove.

Nikolai of course thinks to procedure and appearances. Don't worry about Ailthmar, all correspondence will go through me. If you end up needing to travel there, you can speak to the Captain of the Guard, as he would be in charge of dealing with bandits. She quickly pens a letter of introduction to Captain Randall of the Ailthmar City Guard, and another with their contract terms to present to the mayor of Cove.

Anna is more concerned about the populace and their feelings towards the Fist, and if that may be a problem. I'm sure there are many within Ailthmar who don't hold the Fist in the best of light right now. This mission should go a long way in repairing our reputation in their eyes. There shouldn't be any particular resentment in Cove though, so I don't see that being an issue for this mission.

If there are no other questions, Q will see to your supplies.
She stands and salutes the Agents before going back to her paperwork.

Michael helps with the prep, but inside a war of sorts is going on. finally he can restrain himself no longer.

Tink, think for a moment. When those Griffons attacked us, and we saw that they were starving, we were glad to give of ourselves to help them out. We had no animosity towards them 'cause they were just trying to survive. If those guys were of the Fist. well...lets just think about this a minute. We just turned out about 20,000 trained killers into the population with out even a by your leave. Sure a lot of them found gainful employment and integrated, some were even able to make it back home, but that still leaves a whole lot of dangerous men abandoned in a foreign country with no means of support. Sure you can just write them off as scum, but have you ever walked a mile in their shoes? Has you belly button ever rubbed your backbone? Have you ever been surrounded by folk that hate you with no one to watch your back? You are a darned good locksmith Tinker, you could quit the Fist now, set up shop and make out alright. But what if your only skill was swinging a weapon and the only thing you know is how to do is take orders, stand the line and kill till those trying to kill you were dead? You haven't eaten in a week and you've been run out of every village you've come to. Is it so hard to realize that we put our soldiers in that position? They are just trying to survive, most of them anyway, and now we, their brothers in arms are now being sent to kill them because they were unlucky enough to follow orders that led to a defeat. Heck there might not be any ex-Fist members in the group of bandits. but if there is....I think we owe it to them to try and save them. I'm not looking at this as a purely reconnaissance in force seek and destroy mission, I see it as more of a rescue mission.

He heads over to the stables with Anna and helps pick out suitable mounts for the group.

He has everything packed and ready to go before he goes to bed and has a page make sure they are awakened early enough to have time for a hearty breakfast before setting out.

"The idea that we try to get any ex-Fist members we encounter to surrender without a fight sounds noble, but beware. It could cost you. As a Fist member, they would have known they could return to the Citadel and be dismissed from here if they didn't wish to continue as a Mailed Fist. Many men have died in this war and so jobs to farm or rebuild should not have been hard to find. If they chose a life of banditry instead, don't expect them to cozy up to us." Nikolai warns.

There is somewhat of a struggle of conscience among the Fist members with what to do with former team members should they be among those resorting to banditry. In the end, they all just hope that none of them have come to that.

The librarian is a bit spooked, but not too much to answer. I was just doing some research on some older tomes that we acquired recently. I opened one, and the pages started ruffling and shooting out. Then it turned into that!

Back in the library, a large humanoid figure that seems to be made of paper and leather binding material lumbers about, knocking down shelves and shaking the floor with its heavy tread. Upon seeing Nikolai, it bellows and papers seem to explode out of it, swirling in a vortex around it for a few seconds before settling back into the body.

Don't waste too much time, the tome was innocuous enough, a book of magical formulae and the like from the cover. The real clues may lie in where the book came from. I believe it was a rather recent addition to the library, but I'll have to check my records. It may take me a few days.

Unfortunately for those who wish to search the library, it's a bit of a wreck right now. Nikolai and Pru set about finishing preparations for their real mission, Tinker and Michael head to the baths, and Trayvin and Anna try to help restoring the library to rights. Like all messes, it takes much longer to clean than to create them, but by the end of the day, they are well on their way to doing just that. Bookcases have been righted, scrolls and books are organized by those that need restoration, copying, or can simply be reshelved, and debris has been cleared away.

The head librarian starts off helping to direct his staff, but it is not long before he is summoned away, ostensibly to report to Palance and face the consequences of allowing this disaster to happen on his watch. There is no doubt that stricter controls will be placed on things coming into and out of the library.

Whoever wrote it had really, really steady hand and access to fine paper. Over the course of their Five day journey they will pass through the towns of God City, Sandrill Crossing, Squatting Crossing and Isben, before finally reaching Cove.

The next day's travel is a mite boring, and some of the Agents are drawn to complacency. Others are ever vigilant, watching their surroundings and backtrail with care. Either way, nothing comes to threaten them during the night of on the day's journey.

The day takes the Agents through the grandly named God City, which turns out to be a collection of ramshackle huts with carefully (if not skillfully) painted signs proclaiming the following of every sort of God, and the coming of twilight brings them into the town of Sandrill Crossing.

In each city the Agents pass it’s the same story. Even though they were given letters of credit for each Inn they can spend the night, The Mailed Fist isn’t as welcome anymore as before. People aren't shunning them, but they can be seen whispering behind their hands as the Agents pass. They can still find sleeping arrangements, but smiles given to other customers are forced or non-existent.

Nikolai keeps his opinions to himself for the most part. Being killed by Neutronis smarted a lot but it happened, and it's over, and they must move on.

"I think for the most part, those that actually wanted to stay with the Fist did. The reduction of resources also necessitated the reduction in our troops, so those that wanted to leave were not encouraged to stay. Those die-hard Neutronis supporters didn't want to have anything to do with Palance and the winning Fist side so nothing to gain in trying to convince them otherwise except jeers," he replies, simply, to Michael's comments.

Nikolai does not tire to remind his team mates to keep ever vigilant, especially when staying at an inn. Always one awake and weapons always close at hand.

While traveling, the wagon goes in the middle, Nikolai up front. Michael and Trayven take turns up front with Nikolai and behind the wagon watching the rear. Pru and Anna in front of the wagon. Tinker in the wagon.

Nikolai always keeps cordial when meeting the people and leaves an extra amount in tips for waitresses and for their rooms. All this, though, won't erase bad feelings but he hopes in the long term it will help.

Despite the whispers, the Agents are determined to regain the goodwill of the people they are there to help. Anna spreads her songs on their way through God City, which draws some applause and joy from the children, enjoying the spectacle immensely. A few older feet grudgingly tap as well, so maybe not all hope is lost.

Michael is less happy with the reactions of the people, but Nikolai is determined to reinforce that the Fist that remains is made up of good people and will be a force for good in the region.

Late evening in the Sandrill Crossing Inn, Anna is quietly strumming her guitar and the Agents are enjoying some fine food and drink. Their eyes and ears are vigilant though, catching every detail, just in case, and they note a group of entering the Inn very late. The man that seems to be their leader yells to the barkeep as he enters.

Man: ”Some ale, bread, beans and some meat for me and my men! We are in a hurry… “
Bartender: ”Here you go lads… what keeps you on the road so late?”
Gerard: ”In a hurry to get to Cove. “
Bartender: ”Cove you say? Not much there is there?”

By this time, the leader has approached the bar and is not yelling so loudly for easy hearing, and his men have settled around a table, but the name Cove has piqued the interest of the Agents...

But they have a mission to do, so Pru regretfully leaves the symbols of the gods behind.

To the extent that she can, Pru makes herself into a one-woman goodwill tour. She smiles pleasantly at people, talks to them of ordinary, everyday things: the weather, this year's crops, news of the road.

"Our reputation isn't going to be won back overnight," she reminds her Fist-mates.

Tinker keeps his mouth shut, scowls, and thinks. He is not used to bad-mouthing the decisions of superiors or people he admires and is very uncomfortable with what Michael is saying. On the other side of the blade, he had the same problems with Nutronis who very much needed someone to talk him out of his course of action before he imploded the Mailed Fist! Not knowing which way to go, the dwarf keeps his thoughts to himself. Mostly. Being a terrible bluffer, his thoughts are easy to read as his expression changes, going back and forth.

The townsfolk are easier to handle. Tinker expected something like this and so maintains a peaceful outwardly appearance, nodding cordially to the huts in God City (deeper to the six gods of the Wold) and tries not to instigate anything.

And then the loud 'leader' and team comes in talking about Cove. The others have already started their moves and Tinker has two choices; hunker down and be ready to back them up, or create a diversion so the others in the room focus on him and not the sneaking Michael. Tinker knows he isn't good at talking nor bluffing, and so it is option one for him!

The dwarf shifts about in his seat, making sure his feet are under him and his urgrosh is in easy reach. His right hand slips into his waist pouch and he fingers his brass knuckles onto one hand, keeping them hidden under the table. He is ready to back up the other Agents!

Nikolai pulls out his hand copy of the map from the citadel and with his Everburning Torch carefully shielded by his cloak, studies it. He finds the road they are on and looks on the map in the direction the suspected Gerard's group went. Does it look like a shortcut? Does it head to another town or village? Or wilderness?

OOC: DM does the map give any clue as to where whoever made the tracks are going?

"Technically, our job is still to go to Cove. However it is suspicious that a group would advertise loudly going to Cove and then suddenly veer off. Suspiciously enough to warrant a day or two of investigation. I say we follow the tracks. Any other ideas?"

"I'm okay following the tracks." Anna opines.

She attempts to help Nikolai with the trail (Survival: 14 vs DC 10 to aid another) before falling in with the others.

"I'd rather investigate than pass by and leave them at our backs," Pru says.

Michael sees the tracks clearly, but unfortunately, even the best tracker cannot glean intentions of a rider from mere hoofprints in the dirt.

Tinker keeps his eyes on the trail, and makes sure there will be no surprises from behind.

Pru, Trayvin, and Anna are in favour of springing the trap before it is sprung on them, if indeed a trap there is.

Nikolai studies his map, but cannot see a shortcut that's obvious. However, the road twists and turns through the forested area, if one knew the road and the game trails, they could cut a straight path instead of following every curve of the road, and still reach the next town.

"I agree with Prudence. And we should have enough time for a detour, especially if it still heads in the same general direction we are traveling in anyway."

remember guys, you always assault into an ambush. A proper ambush expects you to fall back. if you assault forward you push through it and can often turn the flank.

Nikolai puts his Everburning Torch away, rolls up his map, useless for game trails, and faces his friends.

"If these people know the trails better than we, they can cut a faster path than we can hope for. It's just a matter of following them. On the other hand, these paths and game trails can lead bandits in many directions, perfect for raids. Knowing if Gerard is on the level or on the crooked is worth the delay. If anything, we learn a little about these backwoods. Might come in handy someday."

Nikolai points to Trayvin and indicates the two of them will take the lead, Anna next, Pru and Michael, and Tinker keeps watch in the rear.

He takes the lead and goes on foot, leading his horse, keeping a close eye on the tracks while Trayvin keeps watch for an ambush.

Tinker nods at Michael's recitation of the small unit tactics instruction. How many times did the instructors take them through on sand maps and practice?

"It may be that we just keep going and be ready for an ambush.". But he still goes with whatever plan Nikko decides.

sorry for the lateness, been doing a lot of driving and family stuff this since thursday

Nikolai keeps his nose to the ground, with Anna helping find clues in the darkness, and Tray in playing guard. The others bring up the rear.

As they come to a break in the trees and emerge back onto the road, there is a burst of light across the clearing, that shoots directly at them! The Agents are suddenly bathed in light, but before they can ponder this, bolts are following, and one of them each hits Nikolai and Trayvin.
