Tinker nods. "Stay with the Mailed Fist, I'm glad."

The dwarf sees Thak getting ready to lead some training exercises, and joins the newest Agent. Tinker has felt a sense of accomplishment in leading even the small team in combat, and is interested in assisting to set the others through their paces. Sweat and hard work will forge them into a team, and constant talking about what it REALLY means to be a part of the Fist may undo some sloppy training!

Working with Thak and Tinker feels at home. Neither one speaks much and both have martial training. It is a good afternoon.

Emotions are mixed during and after the execution, but by and large they are a rather somber group. When it almost goes wrong, several of the Agents are quick to try to correct it, but none are faster on the draw than Palance. It is obvious how she rose to power in the Fist with her obvious combat abilities.

The Agents do what is best in their minds to turn the mood, offering physical exertion, quiet contemplation, or sharing drinks and stories around the fireside.

Transformations are taking place for the Fist as a whole and for its individual members, though most are not so obvious physically as Anna's. She tries to explain to her comrades the extent of her new abilities and what she has given up for them, but even she will not know fully until she has the chance to flex her wings.

Pru's transformation to leader is less drastic, but just as obvious with the new bearing she displays. She may not want the responsibility though, already having seen what it requires of its bearer. Nikolai offers his comfort, and while he is willing to retake the burden of leadership, he does not want to take away from what Pru has rightly earned. When conferring with Palance, she feels it is up to the Agents to decide who their thumb should be. We are issuing new contracts to those that are invited to stay on, so any previous titles mean nothing. The Thumb of the Agents was always more of a formality though, as you are a diverse group that works together to bring out each others' strengths, rather than a few under the direction of one. She shrugs, content to work out that detail at a later date.

Palance listens to Michael’s suggestions seriously, and considers her answer carefully before replying. I can’t deny that both riding a griffon or a giant reptile would be fulfilling a sort of fantasy for me. But especially with our reduced resources, I doubt that we will be able to give the griffons a suitable home, even if we did have enough personnel to track, capture, and train them for combat. Maybe if they were newly hatched, there would be a chance. But fully grown and needing a large amount of meat every day? There will be problems providing meat for the recruits, not to mention large animals. But maybe someday. She seems a bit wistful, knowing that things she could accomplish with a signature on a parchment months ago will be nigh impossible now. As for a home, we are not so lost as all that. We still have the Citadel, and as long as I’m around, we always will. Steady income will be necessary though, as we will not have the bulk of missions to pay everyone’s wages. If I can secure a contract with some of the bigger merchant companies, that would be a constant source of some funds. Thank you for that insight, Sarge.

Soon enough, Palance and Swain take their leave to return to the Citadel and begin setting things aright. The Agents stay for a short time to assist with cleanup, but soon it will be time for them to return as well.

There seems to be some sort of 'vote' taking place so Trayvin offers his thoughts. "I will stay with the Fist. The group may be a bit ostracized now, but it won't be any worse than what I dealt with growing up."

Trayvin helps out around the camp, but it looks like their time here is drawing to a close. Mission accomplished, or at least completed anyway. Doesn't feel like much of a victory considering the loss of life, reputation and property, but maybe there will come a time for the Fist to shine once again.

"If we are leaving soon and returning to the Citadel, maybe we should accompany Palance"

"What the people and nobles actually think of the Fist only the near future will tell, but hopefully they will see that the Mailed Fist is indeed honorable to the point of executing their own when those break the Code, even including the Grand Marshal. That has to count for something,' Nikolai sounds hopeful.

Considering the enormous effort it took to get here, Nikolai is in agreement to try to return to the Citadel in Commander Constance entourage.

"Pru, you are still the official Thumb. It is your task to ask Commander Constance her permission for us to return with her. Once you've done that, we can put up a vote for the Thumb as the Commander suggested." Nikolai grins knowing how Pru hates to be up front and in the limelight but also knows it will build her confidence even more.

OOC: next post, lets make a point to all vote for who each PC wants as Thumb. You can vote for yourself or someone else. Nikolai was elected Thumb by Sgts Trimmack and Helmbane. This time we get to choose.

Though he does not show it, His Captains words hurt Michael. The 2nd part of his proposals, Cthona, were just an Idea. But the Griffons, their majesty, power and nobility, even while starving, stuck something within Michael. He mulls it over in the back of his mind during the talks around the campfire. He comes to the conclusion that Palance wasn't categorically denying recruiting the griffons, but that she was basically posing questions to be answered before recruitment. Michael resolves to answer those questions.
the questions are:
Can we give them a good home?
How to capture, train and track them?
How much meat per adult?

To answer the questions, Michael dresses in Mufti (civilian clothes) and heads into Ailsildur early that morning. he buys a good bottle of booze. He asks around at saddle makers, blacksmiths and stables till he finds a lead on a dealer of exotic steeds. (don't know what to roll for that, so I'll leave it to the DM)
He poses questions to the dealer, gaining insight and perhaps leads to others who may know more than the man he is talking to. He keeps copious notes, and is careful to avoid spilling the location of the griffons he knows about. He also asks what might cause griffons to become poor, what do they have to compete with in their natural environment? He attempts, with the add of the good booze, to get the dealer to open up and talk freely about Griffons, letting the conversation drift where it may and gleaning what bits of information he can from the stream.

"The Fist is my home," Pru says. "I'm staying."

When the subject of leadership comes up, Pru looks troubled. "As Captain Palance said, it's more of a formality," she says. "The only time it's really useful to have an official Thumb is when we're dealing with other groups--either other Fists or groups outside the Mailed Fist altogether. And I'm a girl. And a kid. And I'm not very strong. And people who only respect strong, manly stuff aren't going to respect me at all. You all know what I can do, but to outward appearances, I'm negligable. We don't want me for a Thumb."

Pru votes to reinstate Nikolai as Thumb.

Anna searches her memory for what she knows of Griffons. (knowledge[arcana] : 14) She would like to one day turn into one of them, but that day is probably a ways off. She shares what she knows of them with Michael and whoever will listen.

She also helps out as best she can around camp. In the evening when the company is sitting around the fire she attempts to improve morale with her darkwood guitar. (Perform [strings] : 19)

She also spends 4 hours as a large oak via tree shape. While doing this she attempts to blend in with her surroundings as a tree. (Disguise: 27; including +10 polymorph bonus)

Michael looks up at Pru with something akin to adoration. She's the closest thing he has ever had to a sister and he is...hurt when she talks down about herself.
You gathered the shattered remnants of the Fist and held them together as Nutronius surrendered. You managed to talk down a delegation that had come for blood and was fully prepared to sweep all resistance aside and put you all to death. You made decisions that helped keep the Fist alive, if not whole. Every female recruit in the Fist has at one time looked up to Agent Prudence and wanted to be just like her.
Sometimes there is more to a leader than a strong arm or impressive armor. A calm, cool demeanor and a sharp mind backed by a wit that knows just what to say means the world to a leader. Good looks and common sense can't hurt either. You have all of these qualities Prudence, and you have proven that you could be a great thumb. It hurts me to see you sell yourself short.

he pats her on the arm and tries, to get her to see herself the way all the rest of us see her.

"All good points, Michael. Our Lady of Fire has always thought of herself as a little flicker of flame when inwardly she's been a roaring blast when needed," Nikolai chuckles.

He turns to Pru, "Even though the position within an Agent Fist is a formality, it still is necessary during decision times. So, being the Thumb does not necessarily mean being the Face of the fist, although yours beats mine by a mile or two, it does mean that the Thumb must have a Will to be the Thumb. A Reluctant Thumb won't be as effective. We'll honor your non-desire to be the Thumb," he smiles. He does not say it, but he is far more comfortable having Pru in the background ready to crisp anyone than up front trying to parlay.

Thak nods thoughtfully in agreement. "They're right, lass. Y'held your own, followed orders and gave 'em when needed. Soldiers followed you. You've poten-shul, you can, should lead."

"'Course I also think you're wrong."

"All of this, most've you. Too gentle, too li'l respect for y'ancestors, y'descendants. Too squeamish."

"But not by much. Not 'noguh for me t'deny what you've got in you, that I'd fight when you told me to fight, trust you t'cover m'back."

"Just 'nough that I'm gonna do my best t'be like you, t'lead, to command. T'guide and act honorably."

"Then when we both get there... 'cause you will and I've nowt else to do with m'life... we can argue specifics, ph'losophy, practice."

His voice a tad hoarse, he returns to honing swords for the citadel's stores.

"No need to beat yourself up over it Anna, all things considered, we came out of it ok."

"Prudence. I think you should consider that your skills with diplomacy may be stronger than you are willing to admit. If I may be so bold, I would like to suggest that we have two Thumbs. You can direct and lead us through diplomatic matters, and Nikolai can keep us organized in a fight."

"Of course," Trayvin says with a smile. "As independent Agents, you could both expect a bit of initiative and originality in any particular situation from the rest of us."

Tinker listens to Captain Constance and Michael. The dwarf nods to Prudence in respectful reassurance. "You did good Bean Pole, and you'd be a great Thumb for the Agents. Course, the Captain is right that we pretty much are a team and not one leader and a bunch of fingers, so who is Thimb is less important than in a real unit."

Tinker thinks about how Neutronis, when already acting against the Mailed Fist gave the order for Prudence to be Thumb. "Prundid a great job, but her promotion was an unlawful order. Besides," he says with a rare smile, " she doesn't want it. Take up the Thumb again, Nikolai "

.....

Tinker broods. Thak's words hurt, not honoring his ancestors, but he acknowledges that Thak wouldn't know why. Still, it makes Tinker broody for the rest of the day.

"I'm fully aware of this initiative and originality us Agents are free to exercise. The job of the Thumb of an Agent Fist is not to curtail that, but encourage its use in an organized manner and not look like a handful of barbarians going every which way," Nikolai belts out a laugh.

"Well, as the newly re-elected Thumb, our first order of business is to procure some mounts so we can head back home. Pru, Tinker, and Thak, that'll be your task. There should be plenty of horses from Neutronis' cavalry that we didn't blast.

Second, we've gathered Neutronis and Uruk's gear. We need to pick what we want and sell the rest. We'll put the two banners up on our trophy wall in our barracks back at the Citadel. That ring of Neutronis has a bad omen look to it so we'll sell it..."
and thus the gear is divided up and what was left over sold.

"Anna and I will talk to Constance about going back to the Citadel in her entourage. Trayvin and Michael, you two go get together enough provisions for a long trip. I'm ready to put this place way, way, behind me.

By the way, Tinker, did we ever put that poor soul to rest? Let's get with the mayor and find a honorable place in the city to bury him."

And thus Nikolai's Fist makes preparations to head Home, hopefully accompanying Commander Constance.

DM Warren - returning home

Anna and Michael are able to dredge upon various information regarding griffons between their efforts. While Palance doesn't think it's feasible for the Fist in general, it seems that the Agents themselves are free to pursue a winged mount for themselves, though finding, befriending, training, and garbing them for combat would be on each rider.

Everyone seems to have more faith in Pru than she has in herself, despite her successful leadership this last battle. Both Nikolai and Pru have more than proven themselves capable. The group is almost double normal Fist size, perhaps a dual leadership would be in order? Still, Nikolai is quick to set things to order for the present.

The smart move seems to be to travel with the crowd, and the Agents all agree that it will be safest. Mounts and provisions are acquired, and the journey home begins. Between Palance, her entourage, and the Agents themselves, a foe would have to be crazy to attack without an army. And that wouldn't happen again so soon...

Pru is releived that Nikolai will be resuming leadership of the Fist. "I'm happy to be our diplomat," she assures her Fist-mates, "but I don't think I should be in charge.

She helps acquire mounts and organize things for the return to the Citadel. She is looking forward to returning, and visiting the Catacombs.

And she tries not to hope that there will be a letter from her family waiting for her.

Nikolai's comment makes Tinker start: he forgot all about the murdered courier they found under the water! A few hasty questions and searches takes care of that detail, however. It's most likely since he was left on the battlefield near the Tower that he was buried with the other fallen of the battle.

Once that chore is done, Tinker goes back to brooding, and chooses his spot under the Anna Tree. He is still there several hours later when Anna transforms back into a human. "Impressive", he comments, but silently wonders what use it would be to become an unmoving, unhearing object. No matter, Tinker is confident that his steady presence will encourage the Morphling to talk.

Micheal helps with the packing up of the camp, and watched to keep the privates in line. keeping them busy enough that they don't have a lot of time to complain or really even overthink the situation. He worries a bit about Pru, she's a whole lot more capable than she gives herself credit, but that's something he hopes she will realize in time.

since there a whole lot less folk going back than came forward, he picks out a sturdy mule from the camp wrangler and gets a pack saddle put on it. he then builds a little bed on the pack saddle and loads his gear up. when the troop moves out he rides on the mule, comfortable in his pack bed.

The road home is uneventful, and after a surprisingly short time, the gates of the Citadel are once again in view.

It is somewhat of a sad homecoming for the Agents. The Citadel is much less lively, between those who have left, those who defected, and those who perished. Some of those who are left are trying to go about business as usual, but it will be sometime before the feeling of home recovers. More faces even may disappear as Constance takes care of the business of re-issuing contracts.

After a trip such as this, nothing is more welcome than a bath and a real bed.

She opens the box and a frog comes out wearing a top hat and wielding a cane. The frog starts singing and Anna strums along in accompaniment. (Perform[Strings]:15)

Michael is glad to help Trayvin get settled in. The fist barracks is a great room with beds, a small desk and a trunk for each fist member. we curtain off each area so that the women folk can have some privacy and we have a small common area where we can relax by the fireplace. trophies of our exploits are mounted above the fireplace and on the walls around the great room.

Michael leads trayvin to the spot where Linden used to stay, our old cleric, a Centaur named Linden used to stay here. I'll get the quartermaster to get us a bed for you, but this is prolly the most holy place in the whole great room..

once Trayvin has dropped his gear Michael takes him to Q's area.

Hey Q! We got a new member for the Agents, He's taking over Lindens old spot in the agents quarters...as you can see he's not a centaur...so...would it be possible to get him a bed?

How's things been going since...you know...

Gods, it's been so long, is the last assignment still open? I'm think'in about getting everyone together there around 7 or so for a few beers. I would be honored if you would join us.

Michael give Q a friendly smile, but is careful not to crowd her. once she tells where to go get the bed Michael take Trayvin there to get it and helps to set everything up.

Nikolai sighs as they pass through the gates. After what they just went through, ridding a rat infested warehouse seem like newby play. 'I suppose it was,' he muses.

"Trayvin, just follow us. We have our own barracks. Our lockers should be there and we'll get each of the new members one as well. Just pick an empty bed."

They arrive at their barracks and find it eerily untouched. It's hard to call it home as they've really spent very little time here, but it is the only real stable place. He unloads his gear on his bed and fetches some nails and a hammer. An hour later the two banners are neatly displayed on their 'trophy' wall with a gnoll Flindbar between them.

The next thing he does is start a letter to his mom. He has no idea where his father would be, but mom would be home. He does not go into any detail but briefly mentions that they were involved in the Alithmar conflict on Commander Palance's side. Their Agent Fist is back home and well. He'll drop the letter off before going to the Catacombs.

Tinker remains somber for days and the half-empty Citadel does little to lift his mood. The training grounds look little used, the parade ground for recruits is empty, and the people he does see still look either stunned or exhausted, the dwarf can't tell.

Michael shows Trayvin a place for his bunk, so Tinker nods Thak over to the men's side of their barracks room. "Take your pick, either open bunk is yours."

After a quick washing and a hasty meal in the mess, Tinker returns to the barracks and carefully unpacks every bit of equipment. Taking his weapons to the armory, he loses himself in the repair and cleaning of his metalwork in his old favorite place; the Armory.

Hey Q, I've never known a quartermaster worth their salt who was'nt well connected. Maybe you can help me out with something a bit.

he lays the items Brainbiter and Manslayer out on the counter in front of her.

This is Unruks and Neutronis weapons, we were given them by the Captain as ours by right of Conquest. I am unsure as to what to do with them...I could sell them at the catacombs, but you know how that is. I'm of two minds about them.
1. we could use them as trade for the Fist exchange program, but I don't know the wisdom of keeping such items around...you understand?
2. If you could use your connections to get us a good price for them, well a 10% finders fee could be yours if the price is high enough. Just see what you can find out and send me a note if you find something.

Michels puts the weapons away and makes small talk with Q if she is of a mind to do so. Around 6:45 he heads over to the [i]Last Assignment

He is a bit put off by the bar. while it used to be filled with many soldiers laughing and telling war stories , now all but a few tables are empty, and each soldier seems to be holding their own counsel with the drink in their hand. the sight is depressing, and somber thoughts pass through Michaels mind. The mood hits him, and he goes to the small stage...he pours his emotion out through a song. for all the dead, and for all the living.

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Someday you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battle raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell and
The moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line in your palm
We are fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Anna gets to know her new pet and shows off her pipes a bit.

Michael and Nikolai get Trayvin set up in their digs. However, before they have a chance to unpack the gear, a throat is cleared by the barracks door. Standing there in new Fist livery that may be a bit too big for him is a young man holding a letter. He hands it off to Nikolai and backs off, waiting for him to read it. The message is from Palance - it seems that there is another reward for their efforts. It tells them to follow her aide to their new quarters.

The boy leads the Agents to the tower and a large common area with many doors leading to what they can only assume are bedrooms. Still, Pru is more interested in being clean at the moment, Thak knows that food is more important than anything else, and Tinker heads to the armory to clean up his gear.

Michael and Nikolai get down to the business of dispensing with the unclaimed gear, hopefully trading it in for something more useful. will get back to you on that.

Pru goes searching for correspondence, hoping against hope that it's there. It's been so long since she's heard anything from her family. There is nothing from her parents, but she's beyond surprised to find a letter from Verity! There is nothing sensational, but it tells of the family at least. All of the children are still healthy and happy, and life on the farm is normal. She also is pleased to say that she is betrothed, which is the focus of the letter. It seems that she just couldn't keep that news from her closest sister, despite how her parents reacted to her power.

Later that night, at The Last Assignment, Michael and Anna's music proves captivating to all. The remaining soldiers and common folk all enjoy the diversion. It seems like it would be a pleasant evening for everyone.

Pru can't believe her eyes when she sees the letter. She reads it through once, quickly, greedy for news of home. Then again, more slowly. Then again. Everybody is well, and safe. Verity and Dunc are engaged--finally! Pru knew the fellow, of course, and had always found him to be dull as dishwater, but then, she wasn't the one marrying him. She hopes he and Verity will be happy.

She tucks the letter away and goes to join her Fist-mates at the Last Assignment.

Normally, Michael would skulk at a gathering, but recent events have him in a mood to reconnect with friends. He moderates his drinking and still sits with his back to a wall, but other than that he lets himself hang loose.
After the get together he bids all a good night, gets a bath and hits the sack. Things have changed, it's true, but the fist lives on and he has his friends, both old and new...he is content and fades off to sleep with a smile on his face.

Tinker is surprised and a little concerned about getting moved from their comfortable barracks to apartments in Captain Palance's Tower. It made sense but he was used to the barracks. "It'll take a while before this new place will be 'home' " he mutters. Still, having his own bed chamber allows him to stay read out a little. He looks around the new bed, chest for blankets, wardrobe for clothes, arming stand for armor and weapons. There are lamps for night and a fireplace in each room for the cold months. Hmmm. Tinker gets his chamber a sturdy but battered table to place his locks and iron puzzles, something to tinker over. He chuckles at the play on words.

That evening in the Last Assignment, he hums along as Michael sings. Nice tune. The dwarf even sings along on a couple refrains;

"You did not desert me
My brothers in arms..."

And

"We are fools to make war
On our brothers in arms"

He stands and raises his tankard at the end of the song. "To comrades fallen, to comrades here, we are one. To the Fist!"

Nikolai thanks Q for her efforts. He wants to ask how things are going but refrains, the topic may be too delicate, or the answer waaaay to long. He heads on over to the Last Assignment, the tavern on the Citadel grounds, and joins his friends.
Anna is enjoying her guitar and trying to liven things up. Pru seems a bit happier than expected. The others seem willing to leave the recent events behind, even if for a few minutes. He contemplates retrieving a kazoo he won at a contest in the Giggling Ghost once when his father took him there but decides he wants to take a few lessons from a musician first.

Surprised by the new quarters, Nikolai does not know what to think. What are the other Fist members going to think? Things are certainly going to change.

A fun evening is had by all, but eventually everyone cleans up and heads to their new apartments to catch some much needed rest. The beds are noticeably nicer than in the barracks, and the privacy is something that will take some getting used to. Some of the Agents have a hard time falling asleep without the snores of their comrades to lull them.

In the morning, Q has left a note for Nikolai and Michael, saying that she has found some suitable replacements for their magic weapon if they would care to make a choice.

As they wake and move about the Citadel, there is a strange feeling in the air. Where there used to be organized lines for the bath and mess, Thumbs getting early training in for their squads, and messengers flying back and forth with missives for all, now there is an eerie quiet. With the new organization, more groups will be set up like the Agents, but neither the recruits nor their Thumbs really know how to deal with it. Upon seeing the Agents, several of the thumbs with whom they are more familiar look to them, the boldest approaching Nikolai to see how he trains and commands his Fist.

It seems like everyone needs some help, should anyone be willing to provide it.

Sleeping in a soft bed was something Nikolai had almost forgotten its effects. He slept so sound he awoke late in the morning. Rubbing his eyes he struggled to get up. His early morning meditation routine completely a wash, he donned his Mailed Fist uniform then noticed how dirty it was. Pru had cleaned the blood off of it but it still had huge tears and he'd traveled a long distance since then.

He took the uniform off again and thought to visit Qualtmie, or Q as she preferred to be called, for a fitting for a new uniform. Wearing civilian garb for now, the ones they used to try to pass through the country incognito, he left his new room only to find the message Q left for him.

Hunger left him immediately as he made a bee-line to the quartermaster's office.

"Hi Q, good morning. I was in the process to come get a new uniform when I found your message. Thanks a lot for your help. What do you have for us?" he asks cheerfully. He never did notice the quiet of the parade grounds or the training fields.

However, just as Q is about to answer, a Thumb he recognizes barges in and engages him in an excited conversation.

It seems like there now is a shortage of Fist Trainers and he wanted some pointers. Success has its price.

"We trained under Sgts Trimmak and Helmbane. You remember them don't you? I wonder if Trimmak is still around? Anyway, I'd be glad to offer assistance. Tell me in what area you need most, Defensive Tactics, Offensive Tactics, Spell Casting? You name it, We'll be glad to help. Get back with me this afternoon and we can discuss what your Fist's skills are and where we can help the most." he answers still beaming from Qualtmie's news.

Michael is more than willing to help train! While not all are needing the art of shadows, the ones that wish to peruse this path, Michael is more than willing to teach what he knows. After a speech that goes something like this:
A wise man once said that all war is based on deception. When you are weak, appear strong, when you are strong appear weak. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. Ultimately if your enemy is not aware of your presence you have achieved the supreme advantage, surprise! And with surprise, you can pick your spots on the enemies armor and bypass it for a killing blow, You can listen in on their plans or gather information that can save your comrades lives and help to assure victory. For ones such as we, the shadows are our friend. stillness is our temple, and stealth is our religion.

Micheal then starts the men out by sending them out into the field. He gives them lessons on how to craft camouflage, how to move silently, how to watch your target and only move when he looks away. he keeps a note pad handy and records their various strengths and weaknesses, or better yet he has a bookworm private with good handwriting do it while he puts the troops through their paces. taking the private aside and whisping to him what to write. After he give the toops the lesson, he splits the group and has one side be the watcher and the other side be the sneak. He lets the play with this, then switches sides. taking notes on who is the stealthiest and who has the best perception. he then critiques the students, pointing out both the good and the bad, he switches things up more sometimes having the whole group sneak in on one senty, other times the opposite. he switches up training areas. gives lessons on useful places to hide in buildings. the importance of masking odor. Late in the evening, when has thoroughly exhausted them, but hopefully kept their attention he shows them how it's done, and actually does a pretty decent job of hiding.

after he lets the troops go for the evening he goes up to his quarters and starts to work on the lesson plan for tomorrow. entitled: 'Flanking, and the sneak attack or how to double your pleasure, double your fun"....nah scratch that, must be tired, too silly..."strategies for gaining advantage in combat. He helps out Michael but his heart really isn't in it until the halflings comment. The dwarf guffaws. "Let's give em a demonstration of how flanking is done right." He suggests.

Then he stalks up and down the rows, watching, and occasionally bellows "NO! You have to go slow at first. Add speed last. Your muscles have to remember where to go first. You see? Now, DO IT AGAIN!"

Pru is awed by their new quarters. She doesn't have much experience sleeping in a room all by herself. She'd been in single quarters briefly, before graduation, but had never really gotten the hang of it. At home, she'd slept cuddled up with her sisters Verity and Faith. And in the Fist it was always barracks, or camps, with lots of other people around her. Now....the silence is overwhelming. Pru has a hard time sleeping.

In the morning, she bundles her uniforms off to the laundry, using that as an excuse to stay in her dress a little longer.

She actively tries to avoid anyone trying to ask her advice about training. What does she know about it after all? She herself barely passed!

But thinking about that makes her think that she might have something to contribute after all.

"If you have somebody who's smaller, or weaker, or....well, a girl; somebody who's having a hard time keeping up on the physical side, don't take it easy on them," she says. "Don't bully them, but don't ease up. They can do this. And when they do it, and know that they did it by themselves, that's much better than having people hovering around, making sure they're not too hurt or too tired or anything."

Anna decides that it is time to school some of the recruits. She is still getting used to her metamorphosis herself but knows a thing or too she can share with recruits.

She first demonstrates her combat expertise as she picks one of the recruits as a sparring partner. She makes sure the rest of the recruits are paying attention as she diverts a little bit of her attention from actually hitting her sparring partner to dodging their blows.

"Combat Expertise isn't something that everyone can do. You have to be a little clever to pull it off, but it can save your life in a fight, by making you harder to hit at the expense of being able to hit the other guy."

After spending time with any of the recruits interested in the combat expertise feat that have the aptitude for it she then demonstrates how to dodge.

"Dodge also makes you harder to hit, but with no negative cost, however you have to be nimble enough to learn how to do this."

After spending time with any of the recruits interested in the dodge feat that have the aptitude for it she then does some skill training.

She leaves the room where the recruits are gathered and uses her alter self SLA to take the form of Commander Constance thanks to her perfect disguise gift. (Disguise:30) She reveals herself prior to the 4 minutes of her ability expiring then spends the rest of the disguise class working with a mundane disguise kit teaching the class how to spot and apply disguises.

She then moves onto monster anatomy where she uses her beast shape and plant shape gifts to share the forms of a mandragora and a deinonychus sharing with the class the monster's capabilities and weaknesses.

She ends her lessons by grabbing her guitar for a music accompaniment as she regales the recruits with stories of the fae. (Perform : 13) (Using Cradled spread the word, Anna + all recruits get +2 divine bonus next saving throw)

The fistsmen gather on an open field in front of the dwarf; he stands silently until the last few arrive. "There's two things I can teach you. How't fight with blades" with a flurry of movement two knives flick into his hands, back into their sheathes, then back again to his hands. "And how't fight a man with blades. Those've you who give orders or'r bound t'give orders one day'll need the second lesson more'n the first." He gestures and orders everyone into drills against invisible opponents- thrust, parry, thrust, uppercut uppercut, thrust, defensive pose. "My fightin's a cheat. Men who fight with two blades're dextrous, quick, like snakes'n bats. I've cheated my way't use force and strength instead. Most've you won't be able t'copy me. Still, a few things y'can learn from me." Thrust, parry, thrust, uppercut uppercut, thrust, defensive pose. "Quick draw- focusin' on t'tiny movements of y'hands, y'fingers, y'wrists. Lettin'ya switch from bow to blade to dagger 'n an instant." He demonstrates, they follow. Draw. Draw. Quick draw. Quick draw. Draw. Quick draw. "My new trick's a tough one, none've you'll get the knack first off. A lightnin' lunge forwards, puttin' me an inch off balance but givin' me the reach o'any o'your fancy polearms. Look at it now, see if you want to learn it, t'head down the path." Lunge. Lunge. Lunge. Defensive pose. Lunge.

A few more drills, then a somber look. "Now... lesson two. Any'o you wanna leave, do it. Sometimes, knowin' your weaknesses's a curse, not a boon."

He draws his blades and picks four volunteers. He aims twin lightning blows around them, miming stabs and uppercuts. "These blades'll let me carve up any man within reach. With m'new trick, can't back away either. Y'stuck. Y'can't beat me with a goliath- a man in iron armor 'n iron shield. If'n I can't hit him, he'll have lost all strength and focus and I'll just ignore'im. Y'can't beat me with a fancy monk-man. Take m'dagger and I'll draw two more, grapple me an'I'll stab'im or break out. Two ways t'beat me. First, send a group against me, and use distance. Make m'fight you one by one, make m'only get one blow before you flee. Make the rest shoot m'knees with arrows, with sling bullets, anythin'. Make m'die of a hundred cuts, bull in a ring'tih fifty bloody spears lodged in m'belly." Ordering his volunteers around, he demonstrates the movement- he runs at one, mimes a single blow, then has them flee as the others mime arrowshots. He repeats the drill, never getting more than a single blow. "Second... casters. Drop t'ground beneath me away, blind me, fill m'mind with demons. I've few defenses, little I can do. An action spent hurtin' will always be better'n an action spent helpin'. And I've so little I can do to help m'self if a caster sets his damned eyes on me. S'my place, s'my weakness, s'my burden. Same as yours. Keep clear, guard your friends, never retreat from y'honor. Y'ancestors an' y'descendants are watchin'."

He stows his blades. "Dismissed."

The Agents seem to be doing well with offering training tips. Showing the newer recruits how to fight, how to kill. But no one is showing them how not to fight. Trayvin fills that gap in their knowledge. He explains to any recruit interested in hearing it some tips on diplomacy. He teaches them how to maneuver an enemy into a position where they may decide to retreat instead of fight. Intimidation can also be a useful tool. Sometimes a fight can be won without drawing a sword. As he talks, he remains observant for any recruits who may find their way to a higher calling, by serving the gods of the Wold. If they seem interested, he gives them a bit of encouragement.

a note on Michaels sleeping arrangements. He has a full sized bed. he has extra pillows and an extra blanket or two. At night he makes the bed up to look like a halfling is sleeping in it. he then sleeps under the bed with the extra pillows and blanket. He has his trunk moved around to the side like he is using it as a step stool. so it blocks the view underneath the bed, that and the blanket cover most of the space. Also, after he locks his door at night, places a bottle balanced on the handle of the door, this way if anyone enters the room, when they trip the latch the bottle falls to the floor and breaks, warning him of the intruder. When he arises in the morning, he makes his bed, removes his true bed from beneath the bed, and sets the bottle on night stand. He also makes alarms for the window in his room should there be one. String, a bell and some eye hooks in the wall would work nicely.

He does this from long habit, and for the very real possibility that there may be a few people who resent the deaths of Nuterius and Runkuk and my come looking for revenge. It's best to be prudent.

Those thoughts ran through his mind as he ascended the stairs and tried once again to feel comfortable in his slightly oversized uniform. He enters next to last and looks around. No one seems overzealous to sit so he walks over to the chair to the left of the four.
"Nikolai Komonv. Thumb of First Agents, Hurricane Company, Wolf Regiment. At your service, Sirs!"

He stands at attention but studies their clothes and equipment, as much as he can as they are seated.

One of the figures lowers his hood to reveal a shock of bright orange hair. He's a middle-aged gnome, whose pale green outfit is covered in dozens upon dozens of pockets. On his lap rests a small golden lyre that he idly taps at with his right hand. Nikolai notices a ring on the gnomes left-index finger - a platinum depiction of a winged dragon.

He nods as each person enters, and you can see him stifle a grin at the formalities shown by some of the unit.

"Formalities and regulations. Where would the Wold be without them?" he asks to noone in particular. His voice is warm and his smile genuine. "I get the distinct impression these will be your kind of people, Ve Mundr"

He clears his throat "Ballatime Brooks of the Shining Dragons, and representative of the Dragon Consortium. But please, call me BeeBee" Noticing the group still not relax he gets confused.

"Er, yes, well, what's that military phrase again? Relax? Stand Down? Bother it all..." he puts his thumb and forefinger to his chin in contemplation for a moment before a sudden look of realisation "At ease! That's it! At ease, please". He gestures to the empty chairs.

"Such formality. I believe I once heard that when the Fist was first established there were some 142 separate rules and regulations"

Ve Mundr (Dan Knotts)
Tuesday March 8th, 2016 10:29:04 AM

Just to the gnomes right sits a human with olive skin and dark hair showing a touch of grey at the temples and with deep set brown eyes. He wears full plate, his helm and gauntlets are currently off. Emblazoned on his breast is the hammer of Domi wreathed in white flame. The shoulders carry the high woldian symbols for Domi.
Wittman and Anna hears the man softly say to his gnomish companion, "It would be like Koshe Marr my friend." is response to where the Wold would be without regulations and order. He too, wears a ring on the left-index finger - a platinum depiction of a winged dragon. On his left ring finger is a plain gold band.

Nickoli can tell not only is he with the church of Domi, but a Protector of the highest order.

He stands and returns the salutes held by some of the group. "As you were. Please be seated." he gestures towards the chairs and returns to his own chair. "I am Ve Mundr, Servant of Domi."

"Sargent Wittman, Sargent Morphling, Agent Torvalsson, Agent Smithson, Thumb Komonv, and Sargent Gundle. We have just come from a meeting with Knight Commander Constance Palance and Merina Swain."

Tinker tries hard not to be impressed, but it is hard, so hard. Sitting before them are two living legends of the Dragon Consortium! His eyebrows rise still higher at Ve Mundr's casual reference to both the Wolf Company Captain and the new Grand Marshal of the Mailed Fist.. And they were talking about the Agents??!!

The dwarf is very glad that seats are offered because his legs are suddenly a little weak.

As he sits, he considers the figure he cuts for BeeBee and Ve Mundr. A young dwarf, Flecks of rust streak his dark chocolate hair and trimmed beard, framing a chiseled bronze face set in a permanent frown of concentration. Heavy leather-and-canvas boots, trousers, tunic, vest, and cloak with lots of pockets clothes the dwarf revealing very little skin. His newly acquired Mithril Chainmail gleams at wrist and collar and draping over his belt to his knees. The dagger and sap in his belt shows even here he is ready for anything.

"Um", he blurts out before he can help himself, "about what?"

For once Michael is too stunned to speak. He realizes this and is surprised to feel the buzz has started, but not in the way it does before battle, it's softer, more diffuse, like a warm glow suffusing his being. He listens intently to the two trying to put as much about them into his memory. this is a legendary meeting, and he wants to remember it. As ordered though he does relax, and finds a chair close to the two, the better to observe them.

She recovers and says, "It is an honor to be in your presence, Ballantyne and Ve Mundr."

Anna is wearing a polished suit of mithral full plate mail that glistens in the light of the room. She has her satchel of tricks on a strap at her hip and her darkwood guitar is strapped to her back.

She takes a seat as she was encouraged to do and says, "I too am curious as to why the Dragon Consortium is interested in us."

"It is an honour to meet you sirs." Even among the orcs of his mothers kin they have tales of the Dragon Consortium. His father claims to have seen one once at some sort of parade. But stories hold no candle to the burning flame of these seasoned adventurers. It was difficult not to be at least a little bit in awe, even after recent direct dealings with a deity of the Wold.

Pru is at a slight advantage, having heard little of the Dragon Consortium, but she can tell these are important people. She's not as awestruck as some of her companions, and she gives a very cordial, "It's nice to meet you," in response to their introductions.

She does wonder what they're doing here. Surely such...odd folk are not comfortable in the Mailed Fist.

Nikolai keeps his composure. So who hadn't heard of the Dragon Consortium? His father spoke of them very little as they never really had much dealings with the Mailed Fist. And, as far as his father knew, the Mailed Fist did well for itself. Until now.

Nikolai bows in acknowledgment but waits until all are seated before doing so himself. He ponders the man of Domi. His father is a follower of Domi and Nikolai learned much about the god so he knows a lot about what this man, Ve Mundr, represents.

So what would these three powerful Protectors of the Wold be doing here? To talk to Nikolai's Fist, but about what? It has to be about the reorganization of the Mailed Fist and the Mailed Fist will fit in after all what has happened. The Dragon Consortium must have been pulled in by the other Woldian Kings to get a first hand report from Nikolai's Fist on the events.

All this breezes through Nikolai's mind while the others find chairs and sit. Nikolai has no reason to think of any other reason why such illustrious heroes would be here to talk to them.

Nikolai tries to press his slightly over sized new uniform. There was a shortage of uniforms and this one would have to do until he could mend it. The only thing remarkable about Nikolai is his belt. It had been of two colors, one stripe yellow and one stripe orange. Now it was all Orange, the representation of the growing power of the sun giving life to the seed.

Nikolai blinks. And tries to keep a steady breathing rhythm.

BeeBee's left eye twitches ever so slightly when Ve Mundr mentions Koshe Marr. The horrors of that place will be with him always. That he managed to keep his sanity is a blessing itself.

He smiles broadly and raises his hand to Anna "Please Sergeant, call me BeeBee. We are amongst friends"

The older gnome stands from his chair and begins to pour some drinks from two clay jugs. "You needn't worry. It's just water. I may not understand a lot of the rules that you folk adhere to, but I understand there to be one about drinking whilst on duty" As he fills each cup he passes one to each person present.

"There now. On to discussions. We had begun to receive some disturbing reports about the Mailed Fist. For a while there we were curious as to whether the outfit would turn into a guild of mercenaries for hire" BeeBee pauses to take a sip of his water "Mmm. That's quite fresh, that is. From the Phosy River perhaps? Did you know that close to 80% of the Wold is covered in water?" Apparently not everyone shares his interests in water, so BeeBee continues...

"Where was I? Oh yes. As I was saying, it sounded for a while there that the Fist had being corrupted. It's true, Ve Mundr and I have met with Constance Palance and Merina Swain. But before we go on, I would be interested to know what each of you think of them, and please, speak freely. There will be no repercussions for speaking the truth"

She responds to BeeBee's ramble about water, "I did not realize that that much of the Wold was aquatically inclined." Anna says, "I used to be a druid, until I accepted my ladies gift. I had spent time with the shark regiment, but unfortunately didn't get to see much of the Wold's waterways while doing so."

In response to the questions about Merina and Constance she replies "I am relatively new to Commander Constance's regiment. While it is true that I was found her as a babe, I was raised in the wilds of Fargunia by an at-large Druid Agent of the Fist. Eventually I enlisted on my own and after some time I was transferred to the Shark regiment. I helped my team mates with some business involving a were rat that had been fleecing the Fist and terrorizing his clan. I returned with my new brethren in arms only to find that the Fist was splintered. However, Commander Constance held true to her oath and did not recognize Neutronis's campaign. Furthermore she went above and beyond by allowing members of the Fist in the Wolf to resign their commission if that is what their conscience dictated. She didn't have to do that, so she is a good and fair person. As for Merina, I am less familiar with her save for the fact that she too stood against Neutronis and is our new leader. I know she does a lot of intelligence work and based on what I understand from an encounter with some warring factions of Tiger and Snake we encountered, she may be open to enhanced interrogation techniques, but I can't say for certain. Still she seems a lot better than Neutronis by half."

At the same time, however, he seems completely relaxed and that this position is just entirely natural. As Bee Bee starts speaking, he glances about the table taking in deep measure of the group one by one.

Anna gains his full attention for a moment as she begins to tell about her experience and views as posed by Bee Bee. As she begins to speak of Constance, he shifts his attention to gain insight of what she says through the reactions or non reactions of the others.

When Constance is mentioned, he sits straighter. Not used to hiding his feelings, it is plain that he holds Palance as his commander and someone in high regard. The dwarf looks to Michael and Nikolai, knowing they will have plenty to say, and he will back up any of their statements.

"Now that is a serious question. Constance Palance is probably one of the most honorable, honest and forthright leaders in the wold today. It's probably why she abdicated leadership of the Mailed Fist after Neutronis fell. She makes a great regimental leader, but I think she knew that the very virtues I mentioned could cause her problems as the Field Marshall of the entire mailed fist.

Merina Swain, I think she will be a good Field Marshall. Playing the spy game
Michaels eyes get far away and his faces goes hard, he is somewhere else for a moment...with a start he comes back to himself [b] espionage is a dirty game. it changes you, you have to be able to kill people with a word, simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. You have to be able to use, as Anna called it, Enhanced interrogation techniques, because in the simple math of armies, what is one mans pain and death compared to the deaths of hundreds or thousands?

At the same time you cannot be a machine, you have to feel, you have to know both the light side and dark side of the people in your cells in order to motivate them to bring you information, or do the deeds you order them to do. If anything Field Marshall Swain has, probably better than any of us here, faced her demons and knows her sins. She loves the Fist, possibly more than I do. I think thats why she couldn't help herself when they hung Neutronis, I think, though I have no proof, that she adjusted his noose so that the drop would not kill him instantly...she hated what he did to us so much that she wanted him to suffer a bit before the end...Can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing. If they gods hadn't brought Nikolai back I was planning on sneaking into the prison quarters and...well...it's a good thing Nikolai is back.

so yeah, Merina...I think she has just enough larceny in her to make a great strategic leader. I will follow her as long as she honors fist Law. I'll die for her, to live by Fist Code.

Not quite sure why anyone would care how much water was really out there as long as there was plenty, and there seemed to be plenty, he did realize he'd need a few sips before he could talk, his mouth seeming to be dryer than he realized, and he takes a few sips.

It was the monk's habit to allow his any of his Fist to speak first, but it was also important to avoid any awkward periods of silence, so he speaks up next.

"At least half of us here trained for two years here at the Citadel, all under Commander Palance's command. All the drill sergeants and academic teachers were well respected and taught the Core beliefs of the Mailed Fist. This has to be a reflection of Commander Palance's character. And, as Anna pointed out, she gave letters of Honorable Discharge to those who wanted to leave the Mailed Fist and not take part in the politics of the two factions, and she gave equal leave to those who wanted to take Commander Neutronis' side.

For all that, it should be Commander Palance leading the Mailed Fist, but since Constance had had a relationship with Neutronis in the past, I can see why she declined taking that position. As far as Commander Swain, I know very little, but I trust in Commander Palance's judgement."

Ve Mundr (Dan Knotts)
Thursday March 10th, 2016 3:28:43 PM

Ve Mundr's eyes move to pay attention to each member as they speak. It was very evident they all felt quite strongly about their commanders, not a surprise to cleric. The Mailed Fist, in general, was a very loyal to themselves type of group. That was one of the main reasons the recent events were troubling in the first place. At the core, things seem to be in hand, but there were certain trouble spots and one of them might well be sitting here at the table.

Ve speaks, his voice warm and personable, "Your praise for your commander is noteworthy and admirable and we appreciate your candor and willingness to speak plainly on your feelings." Ve takes his glass and takes a small sip, returning it to the same position it had before he touched it. His hands folded again in front of him he continues, "I am concerned, however, Sargent Wittman to hear your views of the treatment of prisoners or those that might simply be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Even in the math of armies, a single person can become a rallying cry. An order or act to put to death a non combatant for expediencies sake is wrong. It can be a hard thing to stay your hand, but it is the ideal we should all hold ourselves to." Ve pauses and apparently having said his peace on the subject, poses a question.

"Without going through to grim of detail, I would very much like to know about your actions where it concerns Neutronis. We have been briefed by Knight Commander Palance and General Marshal Swain on the matter and with their permission are now asking you for a direct debriefing"

Tinker winces a little at little Michael; jolly halfling he is not! But he doesn't say anything against his battle mate either. He takes Ve Mundr's admonition like the cleric is speaking to the dwarf. And he listens to Ve and BeeBee carefully.

"Our mission was to find out why Neutonis was besieging the town and end it if we could. On getting to Alisidur, we found that Neutronis engineered the crisis by murdering the Alisidur messenger, stealing payment, and announcing that they reneged." Tinker pauses because it is hard to admit Fist problems to non-Fist people but... They were the Dragon Consortium, right? "At that moment, Nutronis stopped being a Mailed Fist and was just another money-grasping mercenary. And the same was true for those who followed them. We met on the field of battle and with a Miracle of Ffloy and the brave defenders of the town, we were able to overcome Unrak and Nutronis. It was a team effort, but it was my hand that killed the Bear Lord, Unrak the Undying."

Tinker feels uncomfortable in speaking so much but something tells him to keep talking. "I gave him an honorable death on the battlefield for the man he once was. And I would have shot Nutronis to put him out of his misery if Palance hadn't done it before I could even pull my crossbow off my shoulder. Death is a part of this business, but I can make it not suffer, then I should."

Tinker is breathing hard like he just ran a race. He also hopes that what was in his heart was also the right thing to say to these heroes.

Michael looks at Ve Mundr thought fully for a moment. He starts to speak, thinks for a moment and then starts again.

Sir, War is the most evil invention the races of man have ever devised. the problem is, you cannot un invent it. The individual can say " I shall fight no more" but the nation can ill afford to. or if it does, it had better have some strong friends to protect it when the Orc hordes are at the gate. One of the saddest things about war is that in order to defeat your enemy, you must perforce become somewhat like him. The best generals can think like their enemy. the best armies use the enemies tactics against him. War is wasteful, brutal horrendous and utterly utterly Evil. That is the reason that Soldiers are tried by other soldiers. Any soldier on the battlefield has an absolutely air tight insanity defense should he be brought to trial. That being said, I have never killed an honorably surrendered opponent. I have never tortured for the truth. But tell me sir. After I have opened the vein of an enemy and he lies bleeding out on the floor. Do I sin if I take care of the others trying to kill me and my squad before I bandage his wound? You mistake me sir, I do not countenance the slaying of the innocent, nor do I approve of torture. I don't really like to Kill things either, but I enjoy the buzz of combat and I am proud of my skills in such, but I use those skills to protect my friends and hopefully stop evil men in this world. Others use the skills they have to do the same, it is not for me to judge the actions of those that have much more intricate and momentous burdens to bear in service to the Fist. At the end of the day, I fervently hope and genuinely believe that I and the Mailed Fist I love, have done more good in the world than evil.

Now as to our fight with Neutronis. We gave he and Runkuk multiple chances to change their ways before the fight and we even called for his surrender during the fight. Runkuk took his death before surrender. Neutronis ran Nikolai through and then surrendered. He set the Wolves of Neutronis after pardoned fist members to try and scare the others into joining him. He killed an honorable messenger bringing a note of payment to him for services rendered all to provoke a war with Althimar so he could become king of a city. Even Runkuk said before he died " I knew the gods would not approve of this" and it was true. Ffloy guided us through his clerics to the evidence we needed to make a decision.

The Wolves though. they caused us more than a little worry. we saw piles of bodies by the road. Fist members who had been slaughtered by them. When the Tiger fist showed up on the docks to take us into custody, we all firmly believed that "custody" would entail a long drop on a short rope just as soon as they could get it arranged. I think that we stuck first after they approached us and demanded out surrender. but after we reduced them and got the remainder to surrender I did my best to save the ones I could. we then boarded a boat, had the Captain of the boat betray us, ran away from an element of the Eagle Fist, turned ourselves over to them a bit later and then talked with Neutronis. He wouldn't budge on his position. we bivouacked in a tent and that night we were immersed in a surrealistic land of metaphor that led us to the body of the messanger. we met the clerics of Ffloy went into the city, got a message out to our Captain and prepared for siege. they took the wall down quickly. we had to fight on the rubble, the town guard stood with us. I stayed back, pelting at the enlarged soldiers and the clerics on their backs with my sling stones. after that wave was repulsed, the bugle sounded for a charge. Neutronis, Runkujk, and two horse Masters came at us followed by another wave of infantry. Anna and Nikolai engaged the charge with area of effect spells from items in their possession, killing the horses and damaging the men. the 4 continued their approach on foot. Tinker met Runkun and was almost killed by the return strike from the big barbarian. I engaged one of the HorseMasters. Pru hit Runkuk with a ray that really made him mad. I dispatched my opponent and turned to help with Runkuk, I think I hit him once or twice, but he was really hart to hit. I could never get to his vitals...anyway...the earth opened up and swallowed us all. Trayvin cushioned Tinker with his body to keep the fall from killing him...gods bless Trayvin. it was in the crevasse that we finished Runkuk and where Nikolai died, and where Neutronis surrendered.

Pru talked the reinforcements for Althimar filing in off the boats into not arresting us all Gods bless her as well. While I was trying to reorganize the leaderless men fo the Fist into a cohesive whole so that we could move back to the camp before they all got arrested. They Hung the traitors the next day in the square. The Fist lost over 3000 men in this fiasco and we still were required to reduce force down from regimental strength to a short company. which put a lot of men out of work. and from what I hear the Mailed Fist has to pay reparations to the city in perpetuity , 160,000 gp per year. Thats a crime. The guilty are dead, and we who stopped it are made to pay for their crimes.

Michael finishes bitterly, tears of anger and loss threatening to win out over his self control . In speaking it, he has re lived it and a few weeks is not enough to dull the pain of loss within.

Neutronis's army had over hunted their land and the griffons attacked our mounts looking for food. We managed to dissuade the griffons from continuing to attack and even did what we could to heal them, leaving our slain mounts as food for them."

"We also ran into a family that had been displaced from their home by forces loyal to Neutronis. We saved that family from some trolls and later found their farm. We managed to avoid getting into a confrontation with those forces and met a druid who took up with those forces in order to better preserve the land surrounding the farm as those soldiers didn't seem to know what they were doing."

"All that my companions said about Neutronis is true, but his actions had other consequences felt far beyond the mailed Fist and Alithmar and by standing up to him and his scheme to unjustly annex Alithmar we made the Wold a better place and hopefully the damage that has been wrought can be healed. We intend to one day, parlay with the Griffon herd for their services as mounts and allies."

First, he all but chopped Nikolai in two, and then he threw down his arms and surrendered to me." Her hands ball into fists. "Why did he do that? If he was going to surrender anyway, why did he kill Nikolai first? Was he hoping to make me mad enough to kill him in return? Did he think I could have? Because I was all but out of spells by then." She shakes her head. "I think he was mocking me somehow, but I don't know what was in his head. BeeBee puts his hand to his chin as Tinker speaks and then adds with some consideration "Sometimes an honorable death is all a soldier wants. To die on the battlefield rather than quietly in his sleep. As you say, death is part of the business."

He watches Michael carefully as he speaks "Thankyou for your honesty. Perhaps it would help to view this from the view of the city. Men armed and trained by the Fist were at the heart of this, were they not? True, they represented a foul minority, but the internal workings of the Fist may not be clearly visible to outsiders. Further, think of the goodwill it will foster. See that the funds do not go to lining the pockets of corrupt officials and greedy businessmen. Instead, see that the schools and charities benefit from this funding. The education that can be provided to the youth of tomorrow so that they do not make the mistakes of their forebears. The woman who no longer needs to sell her body on the streets to be able to afford food. A properly trained guard force to keep the peace. All of these are good things that the Fist will be contributing to. Try not to view the funding as extortion or reparations. Try and think of it as investing some goodwill in a town, whose sons may in turn enlist in the organisation that did so much for them"

Anna brings up a more cheerful topic "Ah, griffons. Magnificent creatures. You know, there is a subspecies of griffon that lacks wings? Alce-griffons, I believe they are called. Oft looked down upon by other griffons, but can grow to just as, if not more powerful"

BeeBee takes a moment to drink some water and sit in quiet contemplation.

"I thankyou all, truly, for your honest words. We, that is to say, Ve Mundr and I, have met with Knight Commander Palance and Commander Swain. Knight Commander Palance in particular has some excellent thoughts on how to rebuild the good name of the Fist. They have therefore received our blessing, and the blessing of the Dragon Consortium"

BeeBee smiles and clutches his hands together "Have you thought about what could be done to help fix things? Ways to show that the Fist is a respectable organisation once more?" He asks the question to noone in particular.

Ve listens to Michael, Tinker, Anna and the rest as they add detail and accounts of the events surrounding the uprising and fall out. The Sargent didn't understand what Ve meant, but his explanation did show his heart did. The rest of him would catch up and so the Protector knew he needn't worry. he would keep tabs of Sargent Wittman though. Perhaps a bit closer to all of them. The Ascension War was a long time ago, but listening to these young Fist recount their experiences brought much of it back.

"War is indeed an evil machine, but one that we too often construct ourselves. Death is our constant companion and we have all had to make our peace with what we take when take a life. Your accounts are appreciated and for what my thoughts may be worth to each of you, I would have done no different than any of you have told. I believe your actions did indeed save The Mailed Fist and saved a force of good in this Wold."

Ve looks to BeeBee and nods in agreement with his companion "It is part of belonging to an organization, any organization. You are held accountable to the actions of others within it. Your honor and name are at risk through those you associate with, just as your name and honor are elevated by those you surround yourself with. You have seen first hand the damage to the land and the faith of the people and going forward i pray that you will see first hand the hope and healing that you can bring by embracing and minding the funds that are required to do so."

Ve takes another drink and listens to what, if any ideas the group may have on BeeBee's posed question

"Besides our idea to reach an alliance with those griffons, thereby making the road safer for travelers and improving the lot of the griffons we do have some other ideas." Anna starts

"I believe Michael brought up the idea of expanding the Mailed Fists operations to include Cthonia. We could potentially expand our operations into the region and setup established routes for trade and travel. However, since it is his idea I will let him tell you more on that." She pauses.

" I do know that some parts of the Wold do have a pirate problem so we might be able to do something similar by establishing an island base or bases with the purpose of securing naval routes from the predation of pirates. Also I believe I may have heard a rumor about a community of halflings besieged by invading giant forces. Helping them could be right up our ally since we did just survive the siege in Alithmar." Anna finishes, taking another sip of water.

As the others speak he nods when appropriate, he looks a bit sad and wistful when Anna mentions his departed friend Daisy. When the guest start speaking he pay attention.

Michael looks at BeeBee as though he were crazy, but as the Gnome speaks, his mouth closes, his head cocks to the side and a thoughtful look overtakes his features. By the end he is nodding in complete agreement with the Honored hero. visions of clandestine entries into the city, reconnoitering the truly poor and in need, widows, orphans, the schools that need help and the true people who actually want to be saved and do better. then when they bring the tithe to the city instead of handing it over to the rich and powerful they call out the ones in need and distribute it to them. Oh such perfect irony, such a snub to those who would use the fist for their gain! A boyish grin splits his face as he thinks of the possibilities. I think you have hit upon the one thing that makes this Danegeld not only tolerable, but actually something to look forward to. Thank you, Sir. Your words have eased my heart.

He listens to the solemnity of Ve Mundr's words and begins to understand that the Priest is not speaking Dogma, He understands, he has been where they are now. While perhaps too young to fully embrace the truth of his words, Michael vows to reflect upon them and do what he can to embrace them.

when Anna speaks again, and looks at him he speaks up.

Yeah..uh..yes..Cthonia offers myriad possibilities. Across it's length it has Ocean and Sea access, rivers for water access. so we could raise a salt and freshwater navy there. It has no overarching legal authority, so Fist law would be the only law. The trade route between The Float and Plateau City is Dangerous and the beasts fierce. It would make an outstanding training ground for our troops. Can't you just see it though..Heavy Calvary mounted on Triceratops, Light halfling calvary on velocaraptors, Mounted Archers on T-Rex!?! There is trade to be had, money to be made securing the trade routes. We are far enough away from established kingdoms that we would threaten no one. but with sea access we can travel to anywhere we are needed relatively easy. It's perfect!

The Argument that Neutronis gave for doing what he did was that the Fist had no home. We exist at the pleasure of the Kingdoms we service. Mercenaries are often needed, but never loved in a kingdom. Old soldiers have to go back home when they retire, too often that is like bitter ashes in their mouths, they that have seen what they have seen, they that have done what they have done, how can they ever go home, they have no frame of reference to the people back home and too often long for the company of others of their ilk. I don't think Captain Palance, truly understands it. She has a place at court with Fargunia, so her place and the Citadels place are fairly secure. But Bear and tiger both went to war to try and get it. How long will it be before the others feel the loneliness as well? I think it's a problem, but nobody talks about it. I'd like to one day talk to former Field Marshall Thankasis about it see what his views are. I think it's a good idea. maybe it's just that it's time has not come yet.

I even have some ideas about organizing a country around being a mercenary. A civilain leader and a military leader. A house and senate made up of High thumbs and Officers. each voting for their respective units. with a general election for the civilian leader held every 2 years, maybe 4. Citizenship is contingent upon military service. You can live in our country, but you cannot get into the politics of our country unless you sacrifice for our country. I think in that way, we could govern ourselves and being a country based around being a mercenary, we could offer the kind of training that we had to all of our troops. that would give us and informed, motivated and contentious voting body that would put the good of the country ahead of personal gain. Something most kings and politicians are singularly unable to do.

anyway...I think on this a lot..I get bored when we are on the trail for a long time.

Tinker hears all the words but it t is getting a bit much for him...he doesn't like thinking about thinking too much! So he waits until a bit of information comes out that he can latch onto and focuses on that the way he would focus on a new lock; looking at it from all angles and ignoring other distractions.

What could they do about it? "Well, we did pretty well with Althimar's defenders. They listened and we fought well together. And when we came back to the Citadel, all of us took some hand in training recruits. Maybe instead of just hiring out as armed force, the Mailed Fist also hires out trainers. There are no better trainers than the Mailed Fist! And in doing teaching and training, we would also foster understanding and goodwill. You know, make people see that we're people too and that we can help build communities. It takes three grueling years to make a trooper, so the Fist won't be training ourselves out of a job, but we would have leaders in the next generation who wouldn't be afraid to call on us for some real help. It's like we help them and create business opportunities at the same time. "

Nikolai's eyes narrow. He fidgets a little in his new uniform that feels a little too crisp for his comfort.
'What could be done to help fix things? Ways to show that the Fist is a respectable organisation once more?' his mind nearly burst! But he contains himself.

"Let's see if I got this right. Despite the fact that half the Fist fought against the other over this and despite the fact that elements of the Mailed Fist were the instrumental agents that brought about the defeat of Neutronis' by exposing his crime and convincing a whole Regiment to pull out, depleting Neutronis' forces to the point of defeat, despite the fact that those same agents stood and defended their clerics of Ffloy from Neturonis himself, that isn't enough to show the Mailed Fist is a respectable organization and that will sacrifice itself to right the wrongs of one of their own?"

Nikolai shakes his head. "If that doesn't count for anything for you, then my death was for nothing."
He pats himself here and there then adds, "I am alive because Ffloy himself found me innocent and worthy of the honor to return to the living. If Ffloy himself finds elements of the Mailed Fist honorable and respectable, then shouldn't the mortals that follow him recognize the same?"

He grins figuring that should set well with these VIPs. "But moving on from there, it would be very important that we make sure the money paid as reparations actually go for reparations and not the deep pockets of any corrupt city leaders. Since we are known there, we could be the ones to bring the first payment and see to its fair dispersal, provided we are given a priority list that Commander Constance can verify is legitimate. Being visible in this work is the second step in repairing our reputation."

Nikolai lets it sit at that and giving the others a chance to chime in their ideas.

Ballatime "BeeBee" Brooks (RobC)

BeeBee listens patiently to what the agents have to say

"I think Sargent Gundle has hit the nail on the head. You prove the Fist is respectable by behaving respectably."

BeeBee purses his lips as Nikolai visibly shakes his head, but remains completely composed.

"Thumb Komonov, I understand what you are saying, but I think you may have missed the point. Neutronis' forces wore Fist uniforms, had Fist training, and had weapons and armor provided by the Fist. True, regiment went against regiment to correct the matter. But at the end of the day, it was men associated with the Fist that sought to cause harm to the Wold. How is an onlooker to know which side is which?

Ffloy may have found some elements - probably a great, great many - of the Fist honorable, I don't doubt it for a moment. But what of Neutronis? He was not brought back to life. Clearly Gargul believes that some elements of the Fist are better off, well, not being here.

So to put your argument back to you, if Gargul finds elements of the Mailed Fist lacked honour, then shouldn't the mortals that follow him recognize the same?"

BeeBee pauses to scratch his chin.

"What I am simply suggesting is that you consider how the Wold views the actions of the Fist as a whole. As Ve has wisely said, you are held accountable to the actions of others within the Fist. Your honor and name are at risk through those you associate with, just as your name and honor are elevated by those you surround yourself with. With the reputation of the Fist currently besmirched by the actions of Neutronis and his followers, what can you do to show that it was an isolated incident and not in line with what the true Fist believe in? How can you show the Wold that the Fist is an organisation of honor once more? That is all I am asking"

BeeBee clasps his hands together "Honestly, I don't have the answers to these questions. But I feel confident in the path Palance and Swain wish to set for the Fist."

Ve Mundr (Dan Knotts)
Monday March 14th, 2016 9:23:49 AM

Ve Mundr listened, listened with his ears and his will. There was a great deal of emotion here at this table and the reasons for that were countless. Wittman was a dangerous man, well dangerous to those in those in power who sought to better their positions with the payments made by innocents. A country in of itself comprised of The Mailed Fist? It would instantly be one of the leading military powers of the peninsula of Elenna. Would the kings and rulers established oppose it? Some certainly would, it would terrify them and they would only see a military force poised to strike. If Sargent Wittman's dream starts to shape reality, Ve could envision his diplomatic life becoming very busy and interesting once more.

"We are not among the counted people that need to be convinced Thumb Komonov. We are also not here to preach or lecture. Your deeds and actions were spoken of highly and so the Consortium, Bee Bee and I in particular, felt it was important to meet personally." Ve pauses for a few breaths to let his words take hold. This group, by their own deeds were important enough for two members of the Dragon Consortium to come and sit with them to get to know them on a personal level.

"Your star is ascending and will be noticed not only by your commanders, but by everyone about you. Continue to enforce the examples you have already set and never forget you are role models and looked to. Those in and outside of The Mailed Fist. You are Heroes and your actions will carry greater weight going forward. Do your best to see those actions, when passed on by storytellers and bards, are ones that would make those that sacrificed themselves to end this recent war and did not come back are proud to call you brothers and sister of The Mailed Fist."

Ve looks deeply at, even through to the very soul of, each of the party gathered about the table as he speaks the last phrase about honoring those that did not come home through the party's ongoing deeds.

The Morphling says, "Neutronis actions were criminal, yes, but from his perspective he was trying to give the Fist a permanent home. I think this too is where the Cthonia and islands suggestions come into play. If the Fist legitimately and honorably finds a place in either region where is the harm in that course of action? I understand that there may be certain optics that don't play out well and could cause concern, but if the representatives of the Fist that lay the ground work in these areas behave in a good and just way where is the harm in following through on these actions? Just as the Lord Eberyon was granted clemency and allowed to atone for his past misdeeds, but also allowed to keep his status as a Power, shouldn't the Fist be allowed to atone for its actions, while still having the chance to find a permanent home? Isn't it possible that if it did establish a holding across an Island chain or in a section of Cthonia it could indeed change the Wold for the better by making it safer? I support the Cthonia and Island initiatives if it comes down for a vote that I have any say in and if I was asked to help with eithe undertaking I would strive my best to live up to the high ideals expected. There is a wrong way and a right way to do this. Just because Neutronis chose the wrong way doesn't mean other members of the Fist can't do it the right way in the future."

'

He was about to say, 'Well, you weren't there, otherwise you'd know,' but Ve chimes in with '"We are not among the counted people that need to be convinced Thumb Komonov.'

"All I was saying is that we've done Part I of what you ask. History, if it is told correctly, will point out how many Mailed Fist fought on Ailsidur's side to defeat Neurtonis and his corrupted view of the future of the Mailed Fist. You want guarantees that the Mailed Fist won't try to usurp another city or kingdom again, your are concerned that if the Mailed Fist had a true Home this idea of conquering nations would become more prevalent? But you have no guarantees that any nation or king of the Wold won't do the same to expand their own influence and power. Point out to me a kingdom that never had a tyrant hold power, ever."
He looks at the two and grins.
"The Mailed Fist functioned well within its Code for a long long time. But what makes the Mailed Fist what it is, is its leaders and its recruits, not land. The Code functions no matter where the Mailed Fist unit is stationed. So if the Mailed Fist can relocated its headquarters to a spot outside the influence of its neighboring kingdoms or if it simply stays where it is, the Code honor binds each member to do exactly what you say we should do to repair its reputation. I can guarantee nothing more than that. That you are here on this matter must show that there is much hope for the future of the Mailed Fist.

No mercenary organization is as trustworthy as the Mailed Fist. So our reputation is a little sullied, word of what happened and who helped prevent a disaster will spread. If you keep an eye on this Word, it will stay True. That is what we ask, you make sure History isn't changed, and for our part, we will do our best to keep History from repeating itself."

After that long speech Nikolai has to take a gulp of water, but it also keeps him from looking directly at the two Dragon Consortium members. The Mailed Fist can do everything right, but if the enemies of the Fist keep distorting the Truth, then the effectiveness of the Mailed Fist will be worthless and the Wold worse off for it.

it's a slippery slope command. on one hand, you have to have troops that will obey commands instantly, even ones that may mean their deaths. That invites abuse. On the other hand if you train your troops to know what is right and wrong, then they are much less likely to obey orders that have a high risk of death. Luckily the Fist trains for Conscientious toops, so I think our commanders will keep to Fist Law. I serve Commander Palance. if she serves Field Marshall Swain then I do too. That may not be how it's supposed to be on the books, but its the way it works out in real life.

"Merina and Constance are our leaders, leaders of the Mailed Fist, as evidenced by their conduct in the recent conflict, they follow the code of Fist. The code outlines just and honorable actions to follow. However just because Merina and Constance are the current leadership doesn't mean they will automatically continue to follow the code, presumably Neutronis himself once followed the code until he lost his way. While it is true that Constance and Merina are our superior officers and we should follow their orders so that the Fist functions smoothly, I believe there is such a thing as a legal and just order and also such a thing as an illegal and unjust order. While we should follow any just and legal order given by our superiors, we should disobey any unjust and illegal order. There is a saying that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good beings to do nothing. If we are given an unjust order and we do nothing but obey it, doesn't that make us as guilty as the one who is giving it? One cannot use I was just simply following orders as a defense in favor of said unjust act. I believe it is our responsibility to each other and to the greater Wold to reflect on the orders that we are given and determine to the best of our ability whether they are just or not. In this way we may agree to follow the orders given by Merina and Constance for now as they have proven themselves to be just people, but if in the unfortunate event in the future that one of them becomes a tyrant and starts giving unjust orders I would hope to stand with my brethren in arms that you have assembled here against such tyranny. I would lament the fact that the Fist had splintered so again and that we were forced to repeat our history but I would hope that those you have before you would be able to recognize what is happening and do something about it, instead of sit idly by and allow evil to triumph. So while we will follow their lead for now, if things do go awry in the future we may have to oppose them for the good of the Wold. Hopefully all parties involved have learned from what just happened and this scenario does not come to pass." Anna says.

She then goes on to drink from her cup as it takes many words to outline the complexity of confonting unjust orders in a military hierarchy.

"Without the Code, we are just another band of brigands. Serving Palance or Swain without first pledging wholeheartedly to the Code puts us no better than the thousands that blindly followed Neutronis. When we encountered the Eagle Thumb on the beach, we had a lengthy discussion on this same topic. For the most part we felt it fell upon deaf ears.

Trayvin orders some food and thinks about the tasks that Constance is preparing for them.

Nikolai wonders how much his father knows about these trials Anna was speaking about. Surely this Dragon Consortium was not interested in hiring out a Fist for some job. The main purpose was a scouting mission, of course. What Ve Mundr meant by 'last few things' Nikolai just ignores as there was no point in speculating about it. They would bring it up when they felt like it.

"Well, you may offer to pay the bill, but you honor us for being here. When word spreads to the kings and queens of the Wold that the Dragon Consortium visited the Mailed Fist and was satisfied with what they saw, then that in itself will be of big help in restoring our reputation." Nikolai grins.

Nikolai is not one for splurging at meals but a month or more of trail rations and wild whatever you can catch meals puts him in a mood for some real good beef steak sizzling on a skillet downed with the Beer of the House and dark bread and coloring the plate with some carrots and tomatoes.

Tryvin brings up some possible improvements on the wording of the Code.
"Perhaps that's not a bad idea. Some stronger clause pertaining to NOT usurping power from recognized established authority might be in order. It was clear that our words about Honor and the Code had a greater effect than we anticipated or hoped for. That is a good thing, showing that the Mailed Fist is made up of a lot of good people, far more than the bad elements that join for purposes of their own."

"So, Beebee, have you ever had to deal with Will 'o Wisps?"

As the food and drink arrive, the meeting becomes much more relaxed.

"Ah, the trials. Truth be told some are underway as we speak" BeeBee nods to Anna "This is by no means an interview question or anything, but if you were offered the chance to join the Dragon Consortium, could you put your oath to the Fist behind you? That is, the Consortium deal with threats across the Wold. And in some cases even beyond that! Could you swear your allegiance to the Consortium instead of the Fist? Assuming the Commanders at the time encouraged it for the greater good of course. No need to answer now. I don't wish to put a dampener on the meal"

BeeBee then responds to Nikolai "Will-o-wisps? Oh my, yes. Why, there was this one time just on the outskirts of the Culverwood..."

The stories from BeeBee come thick and fast, as he sits and enjoys to food and ale provided. He's more than happy to talk about anything the party wish to, often going into unbearable details. The only topic he ever shies away from is Koshe Marr. That part of his past will remain off limits.

"Well, as long as I would be able to continue to be a role model for the members of the Fist, then I wouldn't see the harm in helping out wherever there is need."

Trayvin asks the waitress if they have any meade.

"As long as my superior officers and my lady was on board with it, I don't see any problems. What would you call an ex merc band of dragons? Armored Dragons, Mailed Dragons, Steel Dragons? I mean I understand this could be putting the cart before the horse here but maybe its never to early to think of good names for things?" Anna says.

Pru laughs. "I doubt that'll ever come up," she says. "We're not really ready for such refined company. I doubt they'll want us."

Nikolai tries not to chuckle at Anna's words. 'It would be more than putting the cart before the horse. It would be putting the cart even before it had wheels.'

Nikolai's perspective on the Mailed Fist is different than those of his friends.
"My father is totally dedicated to the Code that fashions the Mailed Fist into what it is. But he once left the Mailed Fist for a cause he felt called to do that seemed greater at the time. He helped lead and protect the caravan that became the founding fathers of Bryn Baraz. Through his strength and dedication to that settlement, together with the other Protectors, the settlement survived the harshness of that dry land and attacks against it to disrupt the mithril mine there. They even fought off Al Mathir for control of the mine.
But he eventually returned to the Mailed Fist and still serves.

So, I am familiar with Callings. I am totally bound to maintain the Honor of the Mailed Fist and work for its success. But if the Dragon Consortium were to present such a Calling, I would take it, having faith that the Dragon Consortium would not do so without great need."

Ve orders a steak as well, some dark bread, vegetables and beer. He arches an eyebrow and gives Nikolai a small grin in return. "You think so too?"

Ve lets Bee Bee do the story telling for the most part. Once the gnome got rolling, there was little point in trying to stop him and Ve liked Bee Bee's stories.

"... and then I said, 'madam, I was talking to your horse!'" BeeBee laughs loudly as he finishes his joke.

"Ah, but where has the time gone. Ve, we really should get moving" He reaches into one of his many pockets and takes out a few gold coins, and slides them onto the table.

"That should cover the meals and drinks, as well as a tip for the bartender. Cookie, right?"

BeeBee stands, the golden lyre clasped tightly in his right hand. Being a gnome, he is still at eye level for most of you "Oh yes, I almost forgot..." BeeBee reaches under the chair he was sitting on and pulls out a plain brown sack. He places it carefully in the middle of the table "Just a little something to thankyou for meeting with us"

Michael is quiet when the question of joining the DC comes up. He thinks hard...
I swore to serve the Mailed Fist, to die for her if need be. If it was needed and so ordered I would gladly join. If it helps the Fist, even better.

Michael gets tickled by Bebe's stories and actually chokes on his beer with the last one. It was the fulfillment of a dream doing this. But for once, the reality was better than the dream. When it all ends he thanks them for the time, conversation and the wisdom.

Nikolai enjoys the stories and asks questions about the creatures involved, his interest going far deeper than just the entertainment aspect.

When the DC representatives rise to leave, he thanks them and offers a toast to the successful reorganization of the Mailed Fist and the restoration of its Honor.

Beebee places a brown sack in the middle of the table and says 'Just a little something to thank you for meeting with us'

"Sirs, you really need not have done this, but you must feel it is important. We accept your gift in the name of the Mailed Fist."

The Agents enjoy the lighter talk with Ve and Beebee over some world class home cooking, the likes of which they have not had in what seems like ages. The homebrewed libations ensure that the mood stays upbeat and they enjoy trading tales of adventures and close calls that didn't have such far reaching ramifications as their more recent travels.

Nikolai solemnly accepts the bag on behalf of the Agents and the Fist and reaches inside. He finds a banner that shows the logo of the Mailed Fist. Immediately upon taking it out of the sack, it looks to be billowing, even though there is no wind inside the inn. As one, the Agents agree to work to uphold the Code of the Fist, and act as inspiration to those that are a part of it, as well as those that seek to utilize their services.

The next morning (though not too early), the Agents arise and prepare to head to their meeting with Palance. However, on their way through the stone halls of the citadel, they come across to young pages in Mailed Fist livery, who they have often seen cheerfully running about, delivering messages. It is noticeably odd to see them still, and it is obvious that they are upset about something.
