On the Road -- DM Zach
Saturday November 30th, 2013 3:38:31 PM

The first day is rather uneventful save for the occasional traveler headed South to the Citadel. As the group trek's onward the surrounding country side becomes much more inviting, a far cry different from the hard bleak and dreary countenance of the area surrounding the Citadel.

The group encounters a small little village known as Lonn Hamlet. It is quaint, small, and about 6 hours from the Citadel. When someone mentions how nice it would be to stay in Lonn Hamlet they are told unceremoniously by their Sgt's that the group is pushing on as far as they can. It is quite obvious they want to make Cheerful Stay well before the 3rd nightfall.

Any chance at speaking to people in Lonn Hamlet is squashed as the Sgt's keep up their break neck pace.

Dusk sets in as the Sgt's call the group to a halt several hours north of Lonn Hamlet. It is a flat clearing protected by several trees with a small stream about 300 meters to the east. It is obvious that this campsite has been used countless times by other travelers in a hurry from the Citadel.

The Sgt's suggest that some go gather fire wood, while others go get water from a stream to the east. and perhaps others could do a bit of hunting. It is low light visibility, but since the soon isn't quite down and it appears there will be a lot stars, none of the task save the hunting will be terribly difficult.

Ok, I need Watch list and Perception checks for the Night. The Sergeants have decided to allow you guys to make the shift, and even assign them a shift, and pick who they are partnered with.

The night passes rather uneventful save for a raccoon spotted on the watch of Bliss and Prudence.

Cameron and Helmbane laugh way half of the night telling jokes and war stories to each other. Cam realizes that Helmbane is much easier to get along with out on the open road. He seems to be a much better soldier than a leader.

Trimmack exchanges pleasantries with Nikolai but aside form that stays ever vigilant.

Bliss finds the little raccoon to be fairly friendly. He gladly accepts any food and coin and talks to the funny little creature that is smaller than he is. "You funny, funny, funny, little man. Not so many, many, many, people lately. Hard sneak, sneak, sneak, food. No come with... stay, stay, stay?" Upon realizing that Bliss is not staying, the raccoon bids Bliss farewell and makes his way back into the night.

The next day there are even fewer people on the road. In fact, by the time the group makes it to the othe rside of the small hamlet of Fewlingham there are no more travelers on the road. The group is probably about 4 hours from Cheerful Stay when darkness engulfs them.

"Ok, let' make camp here." says Trimmack once a suitable campsite has been found. Torches or some sort of light source will be helpful, if not required to perform chores and such for the evening. It is cloudy out no stars are visible.

Since it is too dark to head out into the woods in search of game, the camp will likely need to eat rations tonight. He helps gather wood and gets a fire going, then settles down to eat a cold dinner of bread, cheese and dried meat. He tops it off with one of the apples he grabbed before leaving the Citadel and is ready for his watch. As the Fist settles down to sleep, Cameron takes the first watch with Sergeant Helmbane. The sergeant shares more of his war stories, going over a particularly rough mission his Fist experienced in the Scab a few years ago.

The second watch sees Carver and Tinker keeping a careful eye out on the campsite. As the two peer out into the darkness. Their watch passes uneventfully up until the point where it is time to switch. Out of the corner of his eye, Tinker catches sight of a shadow moving by quickly in the darkness -- but as soon as he sees it, it is gone. Before anxiety or panic can begin to set in, the dwarf and the centaur are quickly overcome with a horrid stench as a creature stumbles out from the brush.

Carver instantly recognizes the abomination as a slight against his Lord Gargul as it swipes at him with a rotting hand.(Attack:17, Damage: 7 -- Is Carver holding his shield at all times? If not, please declare when he has it equipped and when he does not.)

Tinker's dwarven vision allows him to anticipate the incoming undead, but cannot help his sleeping allies as two more of the creatures lumber out of the darkness into the campsite. Linden and Helmbane are awoken suddenly as they are clawed at by groaning humanoids with rotting flesh gently sloughing off onto the ground. (Attack: 16, Linden takes 8 damage.)

Thus concludes the surprise round! Please keep in mind rules regarding sleeping in armour:

Sleeping in Armor: A character who sleeps in medium or heavy armor is automatically fatigued the next day. He takes a --2 penalty on Str and Dexand can't charge or run. Sleeping in light armor does not cause fatigue. A character with the Endurance feat ignores this penalty.

And just in case you need them, here are the rules for getting in and out of armor.
Helmbane's cries of pain are enough to wake up the camp, although waking up counts as a move-equivalent action in round 1 for anyone that has to do it.

Pru scrambles to her feet. She hears Trimmack's orders, and notices that Linden is not wearing his armor. She takes a step closer to the fire, trying to avoid blocking the light from the glowing stone. She reaches over to touch Linden, careful not to distract him from battle. "It's better than nothing," she says, and casts Mage Armor on him.

Cameron sees that Helmbane has not moved to deal with the zombie standing over him. He rushes to the dwarf's side and feels for a pulse, which he quickly finds. However, it appears the sergeant is out of commission for now.

William tosses out another light , illuminating the immediate area. Jumping to his feet, he casts a protective spell upon himself before helping Cameron with his sergeant.

Carver makes another swing, less accurate than the first. He takes a step towards the campfire, following Trimmack's orders.

Bliss gets up and loads his new bow, barely visible to the rest of the group.

Prudence jumps to her feet, placing her hands on the nearby centaur to cast a defensive spell on him.

Nikolai turns quickly to face his attacker, landing a blow on the disgusting flesh. He steps back quickly, drawing a blade as he does so.

Linden releases another channelled positive energy to heal his allies and damage his foes.

The zombies continue their onslaught, moving in closer as they attack the group. Tinker takes another hit as the zombie claws at him! (Attack: 17, 14 -- Damage:6) Despite his new armour, Linden is the recipient of two hits! (Attacks: 21, 19 -- Damage: 16 total) The zombie fighting Carver deals one solid blow, but misses widely with the other. (Attacks: 24, does not confirm, 9 -- Damage: 6) Antoher zombie moves closer, finding the small Bliss at its feet, and managing to hit the miniscule creature. (Attacks: 22, 6 -- Damage: 9) Finally, the zombie chasing Nikolai steps forward to attack him, landing a single blow. (Attacks: 21, 12 -- Damage: 10)

(Back from hunting and thanks to everyone for covering for me. Since the results of our actions hasn't been posted by DM, I went ahead and modified what David recorded for William... It's good to be back and warm...)

William, knowing that they're in the midst of battle, does what he does best - Summons some help vs. these vicious zombies or whatever they are...

Summon Monster 1 - Eddie the Celestial Eagle... He'll appear at the end of the turn (since casting time takes whole turn) right behind Z3 (if its still alive) or Z2 if its still alive) or whichever one (if Z3 and 2 are dead) seems strongest AND he'll make sure that its in a position to flank... and it'll use its full attack to bite and tear at the flanked foe...

2 Talons - Hit AC 24 (forgot +2 flank) for (assume miss 2nd talon for AC13) 5 pts dmg
1 Bite - Hit AC 27 (critical check 15?) -> If Critical, does 8 pts, if not does 4.

He also tries to see if he recognizes these creatures and what he remembers about them... (Not sure what roll DM wants for knowledge, but my d20 roll is 15 + 4 (int) at least, then some other modifiers if its in one that I took ranks in...)

OOC: I think the summoned creature would have to understand the language used in the Bard Song.
For example: a gnome bard singing in gnome won't help a human who can't understand gnomish because the words of inspiration are gibberish to him.

But that's the way I'd play it.

Bliss (Cayzle) (AC17, HP7 of 16)

Pardon the OOC posting ...

Inspire Courage rules: "To be affected, an ally must be able to perceive the bard's performance. ... Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability. Inspire courage can use audible or visual components."

So it does not require you to understand language. It can consist of playing an instrument, without words. It can consist of visual components only, such as dance (or rude gestures), and dance has no language. The eagle should be fine.

It only affects "attack and weapon damage rolls." A crossbow bolt is a weapon. A natural weapon, like talons, are weapons. Channel Energy is not a weapon. So the eagle is still fine, but not the channelling.

Inspire courage can use audible or visual components."

True, but doesn't the creature need to understand what those audible or visual components mean?
How does an animal 'perceive' such a performance when the animal has no referrence point or language understanding?

It also says If a bardic performance has audible components, the targets must be able to hear the bard for the performance to have any effect, and many such performances are language dependent (as noted in the description).

In our case, we know that the performance is an 'audible' one. It is telling stories of our sergeant's battle prowess, and thus subject to 'language dependent' clause.

If, however, our bard were simply playing a musical instrument where the audible component did not rely on understanding a language but simply hearing the music, then I'd say the magic should work.

If the performance were 'guestures' of claw attacks and 'screetches' such as eagles do when attacking prey, then I'd give it my two thumbs up.

Just my opinion. :)

well if I think of how certain singers sing, like Miley Cyrus or Lady Gaga, those probably count as screeches too :) so I'd say the Eagle could probably understand the music, or at least be uplifted by it

Cameron helps drag a sergeant back to the fire, beginning a tale of wonder that Helmbane had told him just hours ago.

Carver raises his hooves, striking down the creature before him with a swift blow to the head!

Prudence calls out for anyone else needing help, firing on a nearby zombie and scorching it.

Bliss takes a step back and fires between the eyes of the nearest zombie, dropping to the ground in a shower of blood and gore.

Tinker steps back, raising his weapon to bat back any attacks.

Linden flees. (Fleeing east takes you past a zombie, provoking AoO. I simply removed Linden from the map, assuming he used two move actions to escape the zombie, or some such.

Nikolai takes down the zombie before him quickly, moving back to help his allies. He looks at the other ones still moving around, seeing that their clothes are filthy and generally in rags. Other than that, little can be told of these creatures due to their state of decay.

William summons a familiar eagle, tearing at one of the few zombies left with its claws and beak. The wizard tries to recall anything about these creatures, but never encountered any such things in his studies. (Religion is required for this check, which William does not have. Knowledge checks cannot be made untrained.)

Trimmack swings at the nearest zombie, connecting with his sword, but not killing the creature.

Just as it seems the battle is turning around, more shapes lumber out from the dark to attack! Two run out to charge Cameron and Nikolai, but both attacks fail.

Another creature comes out of the south, one hand raised high as a scream escapes its lips. Bliss, its target, can see that this creature is a bit more "put together" than the others -- which is to say, it doesn't seem to be falling apart at the seams. It reaches out with one stinking claw, striking at the tiny archer with ease. (Attack: 18 -- Damage: 9) As the dead hand of the creature touches his chest, he feels a cold sensation sweep across his body. (Bliss must make a DC 13 Fort save or become stunned!)

Oh kindly DM, does the cure spell mean Bliss can have an action this round after being healed? I presume he is prone and has dropped his weapon?

DM Ian Since post order replaces initiative in the Wold, I'll allow this. Bliss is prone and has dropped his weapon. However, I believe the Reduce Person spell expired as Bliss hit the ground, meaning you are also once again small.

If Bliss can act after being cured for 9 by Cameron and fortified with mage armor by Prudence, then Bliss stands up (I think that provokes an AoO), picks up his bah (I think that provokes an AoO), and takes a five ft step back away from the monster. That's two AoOs, but hopefully the monster does not have Combat Reflexes so it can take only one.

Cameron dashes forward, laying his hands on the downed halfling to get him back on his feet.

Prudence has her plans interrupted as she also makes her way to the now-conscious halfling, casting a familiar spell on him and the monk.

Linden keeps his distance, casting a curing spell upon himself as he enters a relatively quiet area. The sounds of combat still ring out just in the distance. (My apologies. I had that written down, I thought I had given it to you. The potions are 2xCure Moderate Wounds (2d8+3), Barkskin +3, and Bull's Strength.

Nikolai takes a few slashes at the nearby zombie, slicing its flesh to ribbons before stepping back.

Carver looks upon the undead nearest to him, recognizing the glow in its eyes. He had been warned of these kinds of zombies during his time as a paladin. They possess supernatural qualities (more so than the average zombie) and can strike much quicker than its kin. This kind of zombie is usually called a "Lord" in the ruling sense, leading other zombies to attacks. It also has an attack that can freeze you in place so that it can tear into your flesh more easily.

Tinker slashes into the nearby zombie before stepping back to provide some cover.

Bliss gets to his feet, provoking an attack from the zombie that just struck him down.(Attack: 20 -- Damage: 6) From the awkward position of getting up from the ground, the zombie manages to hit him with one mangled claw. He manages to grab his bah from the ground, but the zombie strikes out once more! Luckily, this attack misses, glancing off of his new-fangled armor.

William's bird continues to slash at nearby enemies, taking down one of the final zombies facing Trimmack. The wizard himself attacks the weaker zombie, as neither have been touched et, the acid eating away at its flesh with ease.

The now acid-laden zombie reaches out to attack Tinker, managing to connect with one grizzled, rotting hand. (Attacks: 20, 6 -- Damage: 7)

The Zombie Lord, perhaps sensing the centaur's holy connection, steps over to hit Carver with a surprisingly fast attack. (Attacks: 20, 10 -- Damage: 6)

Pru is suddenly aware that she is standing weaponless. Not a good thing for a member of the Mailed Fist. Her spear and crossbow are out there somewhere, probably under a mangled zombie body. They might as well be in the Floating City for all the good they're doing her now.

You're a mage, she scolds herself, but you're a Fist mage. How could you leave your weapons lying there? The sergeants are going to yell at you. Both of them.

And, being yelled at by sergeants is the least of her worries. If she had her longspear, she could provide a flank to both remaining zombies simultaneously. But no, she'd left it by her bedroll, and now she doesn't have it.

"Idiot!" she says under her breath. She fires a fiery bolt at one of the zombies.

Bliss stumbles backward, bleeding from multiple wounds. He manages to score a hit on the Zombie Lord, but the undead creature does not even notice the crossbow bolt. (Is Bliss small or tiny? Being knocked out would break the Reduce Person spell cast earlier, has he cast it again?

Cameron skirts by the zombie, which takes a swipe at him, but misses wide. The halfing strikes out with his sword, scoring deep into the creature's flesh.

Carver continues his assault on the creature, but it dodges his attacks with an unnatural swiftness.

Linden drinks down a potion, , his wounds stitching themselves up.

Prudence laments her lack of weapons, instead firing a flaming ray at the nearby lesser zombie. The ray strikes it in the back, causing the creature to cry out in a horrid groan.

Tinker falls to the ground, but his breathing seems steady. (My IRL group actually just learned this as well. We kept going by 3.5e rules. Anyways...) Trimmack quickly steps back, falling to one knee and pouring a bitter liquid down the dwarf's throat. (Tinker is healed for 4HP.)

Nikolai charges the powerful zombie, unleashing a powerful kick that simply thuds against the monster's side. It screeches at the half-elf, raising its terrible claws.

William commands his faithful eagle to attack the final zombie, but the eagle vanishes in a puff of magic as it reaches the creature. The wizard takes over, firing a bolt of acid at the creature that chews at its flesh.

Feeling the familiar sting of magic, Z6 turns its ugly head, stepping forward to slice at the fragile wizard with both claws. Both connect, leaving William's head spinning! (Attacks: 22, 20 -- Damage: 5+6=11 total)

The Zombie Lord steps back, assaulting Cameron with its disgusting claws. William staggers back, moving away quickly to catch his breath.

Tinker thanks his sergeant, getting helped to his feet by the dark skinned man.

Linden prepares to take the next blow from one of his allies using his divine blessing.

Cameron makes a heroic effort to overcome the undead plague spreading through his veins, striking out with a swing that does not meet its target.

Nikolai steps forward, doing his best to finish the creature off. Even with the centaur running interference on the other side, he cannot seem to strike the powerful undead.

Prudence fires on the zombie familiar with magic, sending it tumbling to the ground in a shower of sparks and ashes.

Bliss takes another shot at the final creature, pegging it in the back to little effect. Bliss is still tiny.

Trimmack kneels down next to Helmbane, pouring something down the sergeant's throat. The dwarf sputters awake, yelling, "ZOMBIE!" at a very loud volume before realize that he is not under attack.

Cameron continues his story, taking an attack against the Zombie Lord that proves ineffective.

William fires his arrow of acid hoping to strike the remaining foe, but this one seems much more deft than its allies, moving to the side to avoid the bolt of acidic material.

Prudence lights up the area around the Zombie Lord, bathing it in bright light.

Tinker takes a long movement to get into position near the final enemy.

Linden releases a wave of positive energy, healing all of his allies for 2HP.

Carver rears up, and with a final roar, tears into the creature with all three of his attacks. The sabre lops off an arms that was dangling by a few fibres, and his two hooves cave in the creature's chest, leaving a heap of bones and flesh twitching on the ground. With a few more pokes of your weapons, the creature lies still on the ground.

"Is everyone still alive?" Trimmack calls out, holding his sword steadily in front of him. "Don't let your guard down. There could be more."

To Nikolai, Helmbane's desire to leave immediately is a reaction to him being embarrased at being knocked out of the fight and having his pupils save his hide.
"Are you sure we need to leave immediately? Should we not search the area and see if we can find out where they came from and who animated them? Should we leave this area for others to have the same fate?" he asks, looking at both sergeants.

In the meantime, he helps gather the dead undead, search their bodies, and put them on the fire to prevent any further abuse of them.

Carver cleans his sullied blade, curing himself of the wounds suffered in combat. He suggests checking the creatures to ensure their state of being remains permanent.

Cameron beings dragging wood towards the fire, but is cut off by Sergeant Trimmack. "Are you mad? That'll be a shining beacon for any of these other things around here. Put out the fire, we're lit up well enough here."

Bliss urges his allies to listen to the advice of their Sergeants, running up to the two of them. Trimmack looks down at the halfling and says, "Get the fire out, gather the lights and be ready to turn them off."

Prudence wonders aloud if they will be walking or riding, to which Helmbane replies with a harsh growl, "Last I checked, corpses can't run. We ride, stay ahead of anything that might be out there. Get the horses ready, Grundle, and bring someone with you."

William asks for any kind of healing, many of his wounds still weeping blood.

Linden rushes to his smaller ally's side, laying a hand on his shoulder to cure him.

Nikolai sets about the unpleasant task of searching the bodies. Soon, a small pile of loot accumulates.

Tinker cleans his weapon as well, urging that the group move on as well.

Sergeant Trimmack picks up his pack, quickly rolling up his bedroll with a surprising amount of agility. Once he is standing again, the human looks around and calls out as quietly as he can, "Alright, search the corpses and the immediate area."

As this point, Helmbane pulls out his own weapon and begins noisily caving in the skulls of each zombie around him. Trimmack continues; "No more than twenty feet out if you need to, but don't go past the horses. Get them saddled and ready, we ride as soon as-" -thwack- "-as soon as they're good to go. Hang on to whatever you find right now, we'll deal with it when we reach Cheerful Stay. Make sure the corpses stay down and-" -thwack- "-and let's make it quick." Trimmack turns to Helmbane quickly as another -thwack- rings out. "And let's do so quietly, shall we?" There is a cold moment between the Sergeants before they set about disassembling the campsite to remove all trace of your ever being there.

Nikolai didn't think that zombies liked fire much and the bigger the fire, the better. However, the stink of burning flesh was something awful and no matter which way he went about the fire, the stinking smoke followed him, so it seemed. So, reluctantly, silently, he obeys his sergeant's orders to not build up the fire and pulls out those bodies already pilled on.

With the chance to get away from the stink of burned flesh, Nikolai volunteers to help get the horses ready. "I grew up with horses, I'll help get them ready," he cheerfully comments and joins Pru.

Making sure there are no bristles on the saddle blankets and that they lay perfect with no wrinkles no the horses' backs, he proceeds to heave the saddles on while Pru straps and tightens the cinches.

"Watch your fingers when you put the bridle in. They don't mean to bite them, but it has been known to happen," he cautions Pru.

"Oh, Juniper wouldn't bite me, would you, boy?" Pru says, slipping on a bit. And he wouldn't. Or at least, he doesn't this time. Pru moves on to the next.

When the horses are ready, she helps Nikolai lead them back to the group. Once everyone is mounted, she reluctantly douses her Dancing Lights. She can't see in the pitch darkness, but the sergeants are right--it won't do to give away the group's position. Soon, the camp is packed up, the fire is stamped out, and all lights, magical or otherwise, are extinguished. The Sergeants lead the Fist back to the road, cautioning about going too loud. One they reach the road, everyone is instructed to jump on their mount. A steady pace is set, not quite a full run, but not fast enough to generate too much noise. Linden keeps to the middle, galloping along next to the horses. He speculates that the zombies may have been used to get some belongings across the vast countryside.

Cameron manages to keep his horse going, mostly due to the fact that he finds himself between two of his allies. Luckily, this allows him to focus on their surroundings. He hears nothing around them save for the galloping of the horses' hooves.

Bliss keeps an eye out above the party. There is some slight movement off the road, but cannot make out what is moving from that distance -- whether it simply be the local wildlife, or something a bit more sinister...

Carver indicates that none of the items they discovered are out-right evil. He heals up the team a bit, and seems distracted as they head down the road towards Cheerful Stay.

Tinker keeps to the back of the ground, keeping a careful eye behind the group as they move. Shadows play at the edge of his Darkvision, but there does not seem to be anything following them.

Nikolai has a look at the items to evaluate their wealth. The necklace is likely worth anywhere from 1,000-2,000 gold, but the bags of dust are likely only worth about forty gold each. (Maybe someone with a keener eye can have a look at them...) He sees no indication of other attacks along the road, but the campsite was a bit off the beaten track so perhaps the attacks aren't occurring out in the open; that is, if there were any more.

Prudence manages to keep a few horses calm as they thunder down the road. As she sweeps the area, a few items on her friends light up, including the brand-new vials of liquid, the pearl necklace, and the grey feather.

William summons small animals to scout around the area. The animals find nothing in the immediate area. He thinks back to any stories from the area, but the only thing that comes to mind is the Cursed Swamp to the north, a dark and dank place that most mortals dare not step to. But the Swamp is more than a day's ride north of Cheerful Stay...

After over an hour of running, lights appear along the horizon, dotting the landscape with twinkling lights that may be mistaken for stars at first. However, as the group draws closer, they see that the lights are tall torchers set into the ground, each one about twenty feet apart. The torches stretch off farther than your eyes can see, curving around the small wooden structures that populate the area.

The sergeants slow the pace a bit, both of their heads whipping around to look at the area. They share a look as Helmbane barks, "Alright, let's move. But do so slowly, and no drawin' yerr weapons unless we give you the go."

Arriving where the torches can be seen, he slows down as ordered and wonders if this is normal for this area or if they were set up to keep watch as unusual things have been happening.

"Trimmack, do they usually have these torches set out?" he asks his sergeant.

Carver thinks back to the Zombie Lord, trying to remember anything he may have learned about them. He is brought back to one of the final exams the Fist encountered in the library, the written test. The book Carver had decided to read had a short section on these powerful zombies, with glowing eyes and the ability to stop you cold in your tracks. They are usually sent out as "leaders" of weaker zombies, as they usually possess a modicum of intelligence. They are often compared to the mythical Skeletal Champions, horrid undead leaders from myths and legends.

Cameron picks up on the state of Cheerful Stay immediately. When he brings with up, Trimmack mutters, "Exactly. These people have clearly been through a lot. They see a group of ten people armed to the teeth walk into their village, they might just open fire. It's quiet enough. We should hear anyone coming."

Nikolai asks if the torches are usually set out, to which the sergeant shrugs. "Seems a bit much, especially considering there don't seem to be any guards. Then again, no telling what this place has been through."

Bliss lands his raven companion, jumping off of its back. He keeps to the shadows, looking around at the damaged walls and doors.

Tinker keeps his eyes behind the group, ensuring nothing can sneak up on them.

Prudence is simply relieved to see the torches, hoping they come as a sign of real people.

Linden picks a mushroom to be used later in his tea, noting that they might not want to disturb anyone in the town. "We'll be lookin' for the inn," Helmbane growls. "Keep your eyes peeled."

William notices nothing out of place, wondering if the name of the town will at all reflects their time in it.

As the Fist makes their way through the village, you come upon a rather large building (or at least, large for this town) comprised of two stories. It is constructed mainly of stone, although there seem to be some additions around the side that are built out of wood. A faded sign swinging above the front door lets you all know that this is Haggard's Inn, and from what you can tell, there are actually people inside. While the shutters and blinds are still drawn on every window, the slight cracks reveal that the inside is brightly lit, and anyone paying enough attention can hear the loud conversation from within.

The Sergeants hop off of their horses, gesturing for you all to do the same. Trimmack approaches the door, glancing over his shoulder worriedly. "Keep an eye out," he instructs. Looking to the door, there is a small sign over what seems to be a slot for someone to look through.

It seems to read, in Common, "ALIVE -- UNDEAD -- PULL NOT STRING. WELCOME." However, upon realizing that it is simply written in columns, you all realize that it says, "ALIVE -- PULL STRING. UNDEAD -- NOT WELCOME." Whether this warning is to be taken seriously by the undead, or is simply some dark humour from the residents is unclear. Trimmack pulls the string, and waits.

The conversation that could be heard moments ago dies down almost immediately, replaced by a gentle buzzing that may be a dozen whispered conversations going on behind the wall. Some incoherent words are shouted in a language that is not Common before a small slot opens on the door. Inside, you see the stern eyes of what appears to be a human peering out at all of you. "What do you want?" a harsh voice mutters. "We're closed to outsiders."

" Odd, sign says you can use a hand with undead problems. We killed a fair number of them tonight and I hear the Mailed Fist is good to have on your side in a pinch. Want to reconsider that closed statement?"
Sergeant Trimmack is good at getting what he wants, but stupid people who ask for help and then turn it away get Cameron irritated. He hopes he isn't stepping on the other sergeant's toes.

Nikolai knew, from growing up in the Fist, that people either shied away from the Mailed Fist or welcomed them with open arms, and sometimes free beer. His Double Fist were all displaying the Mailed Fist as part of their uniform. If only there was enough light on them.

Cameron reminds the group that the sergeants wanted to keep the weapons holstered. He takes the lead, stepping forward and speaking to the man inside. He does not recognize the language spoken inside, as it is too muffled to understand what may have been said.

William holds back, waiting for those with the silver tongues to work their magic. Unfortunately, summoning an eagle to fight this man might only serve to irritate him further.

Tinker stows his weapon, grumbling about it the whole way. He receives a look from Helmbane, which might be him agreeing with the rogue, or glaring at him. It's difficult to tell with the dwarven sergeant.

Carver holds his sword low, healing the grumbling dwarf a bit more.

Nikolai comments that their mission may have to wait, depending on the current situation. He asks Prudence to light up the area around them all, hoping that their tabards will be enough to convince the man.

Bliss stays to the shadows, keeping a careful eye out on the surrounding area.

Prudence pipes up, leaning into view as the pair of eyes leers at her, eyebrows arching angrily.

A few seconds pass of absolute silence before a different voice from behind the door, younger and more feminine, hisses, "Oh, let them in, Dad! They're clearly fine!"

"Quiet, Hope!" the man growls, whipping his head around. He turns to look back at the group, his eyes slightly softened. "Alright, alright, I'll let you in. You best have the gold the pay, mercs." He pronounces that word with a hard c, clearly able to see your Mailed Fist insignias. "And the second you cause any trouble, you're outta here, got it?" Trimmack nods quickly, muttering a confirmation and a quick thanks.

The slot on the door closes. Those in the group with keener hearing can hear the distinct sound of key being used and locks being undone before the door swings in, flooding you all with warm air. "Come on, get in, get in," he hisses, gesturing you all inside. The man you were speaking with is enormous, standing well over six feet tall. While he has likely seen better days, his muscles are still quite prominent, and many scars across his arms indicate that he is likely not a man to be trifled with. The large sword at his hip would indicate the same. His head is bald, although he keeps a dark goatee on his face.

The Fist piles into the large room at the behest of their sergeants and this man, and the door is quickly slammed behind you all. The large man and someone else, significantly smaller and less foreboding, begin locking the four locks on the doors before a plank is placed across the door to ensure it will not open.

Looking around, all eyes in the room seem to be on you. If you didn't know any better, you would guess that most of Cheerful Stay is here, drinking and lamenting. While some people eye you with curiosity, others glare at your darkly, muttering to the person next to them and snickering to themselves. The mountain of a main claps Trimmack on the shoulder, making the sergeants knees nearly buckle. "Name's Haggard. This is my inn. And since I'm guessin' I'm the first person you've met here... Welcome to Cheerful Stay."

The room itself is rather large, with a high ceiling to accommodate the tauric races. In the back, there is a low bar where many people are drinking, and a door behind that presumably leading into the kitchens. A staircase in the back right corner leads upstairs. Nearly everyone recognizes the Dancing Lights spell illuminating the room, as well as a few objects sitting on tables that are gently glowing.

Hungry and thirsty from the road he steps up to the "low" bar and climbs up a stool to see over it. He orders a honey mead and a round for the room (loot and booty cash rules!) he also orders some of whatever passes for bar food here. He was raised by dwarves after all, he can eat almost anything so long as there is alcohol with it. With the bar patrons drinking something he leads off with the tale of how his Grandfather got the magnificent Fire Giant beard cloak that his fistmates all saw at the graduation.

His story falls flat on its face, but to his dismay he doesn't notice until too late. Now he has to finish the tale while everyone glares at him. He finishes with as much grace as he can and waits for one of the Sergeants to broach the subject of why the town is held up in the inn.

Bliss casts a couple Message cantrips outside the inn from the shadows. Inside, he may want to whisper to his friends without being heard. But at his level, he can only whisper to one person per spell cast. How much time will he have to cast before it is time to go in? He does not want to be left outside. And what if he misses the ley lines? Say he has five rounds. He only casts successfully in the first three rounds. That's three people messaged. He casts it on the sergeant who is closest, on his friend Cam who is talking so good up there right now, and on Prudence, since she was kind enough to give him that Mage Armor.

Then Bliss slips in the door just before it closes, and skips under a table before anyone can notice him. Peeking out from hiding, he looks at the tavernkeeper and wonders what he's about.

Tinker has studied enough local customs to notice something strange about the Inn, and he can easily see that these people are ready to fight. Not being very diplomatic, he glares back at the patrons' stares and speaks his mind. "Ceilings too big for me and bigger for anyone except a Taur.... or giant. Who comes around here that you need a tall roof like this?"

And to the patrons. "So you have seen the undead around here have you? We killed some as used to be miners outside of town." The dwarf leaves it hanging to see if any of the patrons want to jump at the chance to hire the mercs who killed undead.

He retrieves his mushroom and smashes it into paste at the bottom of the mug of water, then pours in honey and drinks it down in a single gulp. "For the nerves." His eyes drift, going glassy.

TOTALLY OOC--A Special Message from DM Donna
Sunday January 5th, 2014 1:23:00 AM

Greetings, Agents!

I am pleased to inform you that your game qualifies to receive a very Special Yuletide Magic Gift because ALL of you players posted in the Giggling Ghost during the recent Yuletide Festival!

Because of your speed and participation in the Festivities, EACH of you may add the following to your PC's Character Sheet:

One cut-crystal bottle containing a fruity blue potion: it's a Cure Light Wounds potion--but it's one that has been personally brewed by the current Head Cleric of the Clearspring Temple on Centaur Island. That means when you drink THIS potion, the imbiber gets to roll a d8+5 to determine the effects of the curing!

This potion was won at the Yuletide Festival in the Giggling Ghost and its magic will expire on January 5, 2015.

Congratulations to everyone in the Agents of the Fist Game! Please DO note that, as a special Magic Gift won through either the Lotto or the Yuletide Festival, the following rules will apply to this particular item:

1) A PC may have no more than 5 magical "Gifts" at a time. This includes, among other things, Lotto items and Yuletide gifts.

2) All magical "Gifts" have a 12 month expiration date and must be labeled on the PC sheet with the date they were received. When magical gifts expire, they do not disappear, but turn into mundane non-magical items. PCs can still keep them as non-magical items for sentimental/RP value.

3) Non-magical gifts do not expire and you may keep as many as you want.

Congratulations, Agents--and thank you for helping to make this year's Yuletide Festival so very special!

DM Ian - Welcome to Haggard's
Monday January 6th, 2014 12:15:15 PM

Post is incoming. Due to my new time zone (3 hours behind EST) the posting might be a bit wonky today, but I'll have it figured out for tomorrow. Today's post is gonna be a doozy, so watch out.

DM Ian - Welcome to Haggard's
Monday January 6th, 2014 4:33:13 PM

When we last left our heroes, they had entered Cheerful Stay after being assaulted by undead along the road there. Upon reaching the village, it appeared they had fallen under the same fate, with many buildings damaged and bordered up. The most noticeable one was Haggard's Inn, which they then entered after a short conversation with the owner, a mountain of a man called Haggard. We pick up where we left off as the Fist walked into the establishment...

Carver sheathes his weapon as he walks into the inn, knowing that it would be seen as a sign of aggression. However, he keeps his shield handy, an old sign of defensiveness. He receives no reply as most people turn back to their drinks and conversations.

Prudence worries about the horses, but an older woman quickly steps past the group, muttering, "I'll take care of 'em. Hope you're not too attached, we've lost half a dozen of 'em to those things already.

Cameron scans the crowd, taking in the strange situation. Most noticeable of all are the weapons that everyone seem to be carrying. None of them seem particularly well-made, save for the sword held by their host. After clambering up to the bar he can just see over, some food is ordered from a grumpy looking cook, a young man with eyes that may have been bright earlier on in his life. Barely anyone pays attention to the story he tells, and at one point, someone actually turns around and asks him to be quiet. He allows his Sergeants to take over from there.

Bliss sends a few messages to his allies, including Sergeant Helmbane. The dwarf turns to glance at the small-than-usual Halfling, nodding ever-so-slightly to indicate that he noticed the same thing. He dashes into the building, hiding under a table and dodging feet to remain hidden.

Tinker notices the high ceiling, curious as to why they would be in a place like this. When he asks the patrons, they simply shrug. One mutters, "Ask Haggard, it's his inn." Whether or not these people are hostile or ignorant, the dwarf cannot tell. When he asks about the undead, a grim smile grows on one man's face while the others grow silent. "Seen the undead? Wow, you folks really are new around here. More miners, huh? Doesn't surprise me." The table Tinker is speaking to consists of a skinny half-elf with brown hair, a bald human man, and a redheaded dwarf that seems to be interested in nothing more than reaching the bottom of his mug.

Nikolai asks for permission to go with the horses, which is quickly granted to him. "But make it back quickly. I want you here in case we need you," Trimmack mutters. The half-elf accompanies an older woman outside to help with the horses. Ask they speak, she seems to have little interest in talking, answering in short sentences. When he tips her the gold, she looks at it and shakes her head. "Don't know who you are, but you can't buy me. I don't need your gold." With that, she strides to the front door and rings the bell. She is promptly let in (presumably with Nikolai on her heels.)

William also notices that the place it built rather oddly, and notices the heavy armament being carried by the people here. He volunteers to help with the horses, and gets as much information from the woman as Nikolai does.

Linden heads to the bar for a drink, quickly noticing the one friendly person in the place. The young human woman greets him with a warm smile. "I'm usually the only happy one in here. My name's Hope, my dad owns this place." She laughs as he continues, mentioning, "Someone else put the sign up. It made Daddy laugh, so he left it up. Not really sure why, he usually never laughs." She eyes the mushroom oddly, but says nothing about it. Like her father, Hope is a human with long, dark hair and bright green eyes.

The Sergeants stay near Haggard, having a quiet conversation with the enormous man. One of the innkeeper's hands remained on his sword, but it quickly falls as the two speak with him. There is a lot of nodding and a few chuckles between the three men before they all walk towards the bar, sitting down next to each other. Trimmack gestures to all of you to join them, and Hope makes her way over as well. Someone calls out, "'Bout time you hired some muscle for this, Haggard!" The burly man turns quickly and barks, "I ain't got the gold to hire these folks, Watson! Maybe if you paid you tab, I actually would!" The room quiets down for a moment before resuming the usual buzz of conversation. Apparently, Haggard commands as much respect (or fear) as one would expect.

Cameron, already at the bar, gets another tankard of mead and shares his bar food with any of the Fist that wants some. It beats trail rations and at least it is warm. He wasn't able to catch much of what was said between the sergeants and Haggard (or was he? Perception 13 to read lips Sense motive 22 to interpret their posture and body language) so he remains wary. However he is pretty sure, but not 100% yet, that the crowd won't try to kill them... yet. Because of this he slings his shield.

Quietly, Prudence moves to join the sergeants at the bar. She's not sure she understands what's going on. Where are all the undead coming from? Who is this Haggard person, and why to the townsfolk seem to think the undead are his responsibility? If Haggard didn't pay for the Fist's presence here, who did?

She stands uneasily near the bar, fidgeting from foot to foot. She's not sure what to do with her hands. "What's going on?" she murmurs.

"Not buying you," he glares at her. "Just paying for the use of your barn and the fodder for the horses. Geez, woman."

The bribe unsuccessful, Nikolai is puzzled at the behavior of these people. Beset by undead, they seem to suspicous of the living.

Once back in side, Nikolai whispers to Trimmack that he believes a Fist should keep guard over the horses each half of the night. Then he asks "Has this place always been this way towards travelers? Hasn't the Fist come through here often enough over the decades that they would treat us more like customers rather than persons of suspicious intent?

DM Ian - Welcome to Haggard's
Tuesday January 7th, 2014 11:52:00 AM

Cameron gets some more food from the grumpy cook, sharing his food with any of his friends. As he opens his mouth to ask for payment, Haggard waves him away, much to the cook's displeasure. The halfling is unable to overhear anything from the conversation between the three men, but he is able to see that the conversation moved into a more relaxed tone about halfway through. The men shared a laugh before sitting down at the bar.

Prudence joins them at the bar, unsure of what might be going on and who hired them. The cook from behind the bar quickly approaches her, a large smile on his face as he asks, "Can I get you anything, miss? Meat? Mead? Wine? Apparently, it's all free."

Carver orders a shocking amount of wine, bringing the cook back down to his usual depressed self as he pours them.

Tinker saunters over, still sore from their battle in the woods.

Bliss remains hidden in the shadows, still unnoticed by any and all people in Haggard's Inn.

Nikolai whispers his idea of guarding the horses to Trimmack, catching up to the human before they reach the bar, who nods slowly. "Get anyone else who feels up to it on a rotation. Maybe we can get these people on our good side if we stave off an attack on the horses." As for his other question, his Sergeant simply shakes his head. "I have no idea when the Fist was here last. I don't think it's that we're from the Organization... I think these folks are just scared out of their minds."

Linden joins the group at the bar, followed quickly by Hope, who orders herself a wine. The cook pours one hesitantly for her, keeping his eyes on Haggard, who does not seem to notice or care.

As the group settles at the bar, Haggard looks at each of you, gauging you as he does so. "Been a long time since we've seen any Mailed Fist up here," he comments, grimacing as he does so. "I was hoping some adventurers would show up soon, but to be frank, I was hoping it wouldn't be a bunch of mercenaries."

"Daddy, you don't have to be so harsh, I'm sure they're here to help," the green-eyed girl comments, already halfway done her glass of wine. "And even if they aren't, they're caught up in this just like we are."

"It's not just like we are, Hope," the man growls, one of his hands balling into a fist. "We..." He sighs heavily, shaking his head. "Gods, it's been such a long day. And tomorrow is gonna be just as long. Listen, I know you're not here for these things, and I have no idea who hired you, but any that you come across, feel free to kill. You can keep whatever you find on 'em, no one minds. Most o' these folks seem to be comin' right outta the ground, bringin' up whatever they were buried with. No one'll miss it."

"Thank you, Haggard," Trimmack mutters, nodding his head slowly. "Do you mind if we ask around a bit? About what we're looking for?" The innkeeper shrugs in a way that indicates he likely doesn't care, standing slowly and looking out across the inn. "Alright, I'm off for the night," he calls out. For the first time since you have all arrived, everyone quiets down, turning their attention to Haggard. "You have your watches, I'll be back in the morning. Anyone else shows up, come and wake me before you let them in." With that, he turns and walks towards the stairs, rubbing his eyes sleepily.

The sergeants turn to the rest of you. Trimmack takes a deep breath before continuing. "Alright, Fist. I know this is... difficult, but we still have a job to do. We need to track down that stolen magic item and get it back to the Citadel ASAP. These... things are just another challenge."

"And whatever the lot of you might think," Helmbane speaks up. "We're not here to save these people. We aren't heroes, we're mercenaries. We kill any of the undead that get in our way, and leave the rest. Understood?"

Trimmack grimaces, shaking his head. "As much as I hate to say it, I agree. This is an important mission that needs to get done quickly. Some of you go talk to the townsfolk, see if you can get any information out of them about what's going on. Anyone injured can..."

"Oh, if there's injured, I can help." Hope suddenly pokes her head into the conversation, smiling. "I have a little magic left from today, just show me your wounded and I'll see what I can do."

" Oh, we're all wounded ma'am, but some of us got rudely awakened while wearing naught but a nightshirt and then soundly beaten into unconsciousness." Cameron smiles at Tinker to let the dwarf know he is joking. Rough humor was after all, a dwarven style of humor and camaraderie. He suddenly regrets it, since Tinker didn't grow up a dwarf, he may not know Cameron is joking.
If mass healing happens Cameron will partake. If it is targeted healing he will not, he is healed enough that he doesn't want a spell someone else may NEED used on him. (HINT: a Channel Energy in here with all these tired and possibly wounded folks may get us a heck of alot of goodwill) Once the healing is done Cameron heads out into the crowd. He knows what he wants to ask based on the undead they faced and some of the old-timers answers to things they have told the townsfolk, he just needs to find the right people to ask.
Cameron circulates with the older folks in the place, dwarves and gnomes if there are any ( I recall 1 dwarf being mentioned). He asks where there are mines in the area, or where the dead from any mines might be. A mine would hold miners, dead or otherwise and an abandoned mine would be a great place for thieves, the people they were really looking for here, to hide.
He also asks if this undead incursion is normal or if it just started recently. They were hired to find a stolen magic item, a book no less. The undead and the item are pretty surely linked in Cameron's mind.

Cameron will also volunteer to stand another watch in the stable, so long as he can do it from the rafters. From there, strapped into the rafters he should be out of reach of the undead and able to shoot any that show up. He DOES need some sleep tonight to be able to relearn spells.

If it looks like Cameron will get the chance to rest and relearn spells he will cast a CLW on the most hurt party member he can. CLW for 5

Tinker is next to mauled and if Hope is offering for free, well, the dwarf isn't going to turn it down! "Thanks much, Ms. Hope." The Sergeants are right of course. If these folk don't pay and the group does a job anyways, why be mercenaries at all? Still, Hope did him a favor, and Tinker repays his favors. He tucks that into the back of his mind for the next opportunity.

Cameron's jibe is seen for the joke it is: they have been together long enough for it not to sting, but Tinker was never quick on the comeback, so he settles for a shove and a friendly growl.

DM Ian - Welcome to Haggard's  d8=5 ; d100=65 ; d4=2 ; d12=9 ;
Wednesday January 8th, 2014 2:31:03 AM

Just to remind everyone -- it is just past midnight right now, as you were all awoken halfway through the night when you were attacked.

Cameron moves over towards some townsfolk, hoping to gather some information from them about the current situation. See below for more...

Carver passes on the healing, instead downing the copious amounts of wine he ordered. When he asks for a place to stay, Hope pipes up and says, "We've got a couple empty rooms upstairs, but most of you'll have to share. Luckily, you're the only centaurs in the place, so you can get the bigger rooms." She hands Carver and anyone else who asks for one a key, directing them to the top of the staircase to take the last door on the right or left.

The rooms are, again, surprisingly large with high ceilings. There are four beds per room that can have a medium creature sleep in it plus accommodations for a centaur in each room. Helmbane takes his key and goes upstairs immediately while Trimmack volunteers for part of the watch on the stable.

Tinker gladly accepts the healing, taking the watch closest to the middle of the night, which would be now, as you were all awoken rather early. The only other person in the stables is a rather untalkative and still man who stands near the entrance with a wood axe in his hands. Does the dwarf make any attempt at conversation with him? (Tinker is healed for 9HP.)

Prudence offers to help the young cook in the kitchen. Despite the fact that she stutters over her words a bit, likely due to the general exhaustion of the group, the cook gladly accepts it. "I'll take any help I can get... these people can drink. And eat." With a wide smile, he shows Pru to the stack of dishes in the back. "I'll talk to Haggard to make sure he knocks some coin off your bill."

Bliss scurries out to the bar for a moment, drawing attention to himself briefly. A rather drunk human stumbles up to the bar, looking down at the tiny halfling for a moment before mumbling, "Drek, Haggard's go' a real big rat problem..." With that, he stumbles away to stare at the talking bird that seems to have drawn quite a bit of attention.

William finds that there are no children about, as they are likely all asleep. In the stables, there are no farmhands, simply rotating guards. They seem disinterested in anything summoned by the wizard, should he chose to do so, but appreciative that he's trying. Does William attempt to engage them in conversation?

Nikolai takes the watch with Tinker, as Hope explains quickly that they already have many volunteers to take shifts. He sees the same man with the wood-axe, seemingly unwilling to talk. (Nikolai is healed for 9 HP.)

Meanwhile, some folks turn to the ever-likable Cameron to speak with him. "Aye, there was a mine," the dwarf mutters, patting the pickaxe on his hip. "It's where some of us worked. 'Course, it's pretty much shut down now that those... things are here."

"They've only been here about a month," Hope speaks up. "No warning or anything. People just... started coming back from the dead. Even people we didn't recognize, random bodies no one had ever seen before. It's..." She drops her head, breaking eye contact. "It's tougher when you know who they were. When they were alive."

"Fact is, no one knows what started this whole thing," the dwarf growls. "You can be sure if we did, we'd be out there makin' sure it was dead and gone."

"But we do know what happened!"

A few heads whip around at the voice, but most people simply roll their eyes. Hope sighs, shaking her head, and no one seems to respond. There is an awkward silence before the voice calls out again, "We know what happened and you're all too afraid to admit it!" Anyone caring to look can see an older half-elf standing, glaring out across the crowd. "And now we're not gonna tell these folks! They can help!"

"You didn't see anything, you crazy old man," the dwarf cries out, many more shouting out their support for him. "Your eyes play tricks on you every day, everyone knows it. Stop trying to waste time. Sorry about him," the dwarf apologizes, turning back to Cameron. "He's not... all there, strictly speaking."

Alemi's Blessed Water (a vial of holy water), +1 to hit when this container is thrown.

A palm-sized tin with a twist-off cover; while the cover is in place, whatever is inside is protected from exposure to both air and water. Inside are three SQUINKY'S SKILL PILLS; Swallowing the pill gives you a +1 Luck Bonus to any one skill being attempted. The Luck Bonus will last until the you makes any Skill check. Once whatever skill check is made -- regardless of whether or not it succeeds -- the effect of the pill(s) wears off immediately afterward. However, one can swallow up to THREE pills at one time to "stack" the effect.

One cut-crystal bottle containing a fruity blue potion: Cure Light Wounds potion -- but it's one that has been personally brewed by the current Head Cleric of the Clearspring Temple on Centaur Island. Cures 1d8+5 for curing!

Then Bliss recalls something and checks a shirt pocket close to his heart.

A small action figure of Vauhwyt, a hero of Blackbird Lake. When squeezed she says 'So I must say, that some grouchy puss woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning!' Given to Bliss by Carver, who won it parcel fishing in the Giggling Ghost, Yule Party 2013.

From under a table, the thin high voice of the doll may be heard as Bliss squeezes it. Well, hugs it, really.

Outside, he tells Tinker that if they kept watch over the cemetary, they might find out who's coming and raising the dead. With Trimmack and Helmbane's permission, they could 'bury' a decoy and see what happens.
"I hate that our Sergeants have the mindset of getting that book and then getting out of here leaving these poor folk to their fate. But from their point of view, I understand. We can't risk loosing our reputation in these tasks. If we do, we will be a poor mercenary lot indeed."

At the stables Nikolai greets the man but finding him untalkative, move into the stables proper. With Tinker and the axe-man at the door, he feels better keeping an eye on any back entrance, so he places himself in the middle of the stables, preferably in the rafters.

DM Ian - What's Going On Here?
Thursday January 9th, 2014 1:54:01 AM

Linden does not seem very happy with the decision to leave the undead in favour of their mission.

Prudence buckles down in the kitchen, chatting up the two cooks in the back. One is the young man she already met, and the other is a girl around the same age who looks rather similar to him. As they get to talking, the girl reveals that they are indeed brother and sister. See below for more...

Carver settles down into one of the beds supplied for someone of his size, going through the routine of cleaning the muck and dirt from his armour.

Cameron retires to the same bedroom, hoping he can remove his armour safely here, without threat of any attacks. He helps his ally clean his armour as well before they both go to sleep.

Bliss cannot comprehend how his allies could even consider sleeping at a time like this as he goes through the various gifts given to him. A faint voice can be heard from underneath a table, but most people seem to be either leaving in groups or heading upstairs to rest. And a select few have simply passed out in their chairs, slumped over or with their head on the table in front of them

Tinker sits outside, his crossbow trained on the entrance of the stable. "Looks fine," the man comments, looking over at the dwarf. "S'long as you can hit 'em, it's a good spot." See below for more...

William speaks with a few of the guards in the stables, although the wizard is only able to keep his eyes open for the first shift. The stable seems a bit packed with so many horses, as well as a dwarf, a half-elf, and two humans standing guard. "Probably the best watch we've had in a while," the guard comments, hefting the axe in his hand. "That magic o' yours any good against these things? Not like it matters. Hope doesn't seem to have any luck with hers."

Nikolai tells Hope that he wishes to repay the favour with a favour. She smiles widely, replying, "I'm sure we can work something out." When he brings up the idea of watching the cemetery around the guard, his reaction is almost visceral. "The graveyard ?You nuts? That's where most of these things gather when they're not attacking us. It's a death wish."

The other guard at the stable eventually introduces himself as Guy, someone who grew up in Cheerful Stay. "I've never seen nothin' like this," he comments, fidgeting with the axe. "You guys, I bet you get stuff like this all the time. I thought it'd always be cool to join the Fist, but y'know, I'm prolly not good enough, right? You're all soldiers and stuff, I couldn't do any of that." The half-elf also discovers that, while there is a back entrance, it had been boarded up to the point where it is barely recognizable as a door.

Back in the kitchens, Prudence makes quick work of the dishes, allowing the brother and sister to quickly serve anything order that may come back. As the night winds down, the dishes are quickly done, and the three are left to relax in the back for a bit. The brother offers Pru a mug of ale, sitting down on the floor and letting out a sigh. "Sorry you had to come here when everything's so crazy," he mutters. "Usually, Cheerful Stay's really nice. Now it's just... a hellhole."

"No one could have seen this coming," she comments, looking down into her mug. "I mean, we're close to the Cursed Swamp, but... I always thought those were just stories, you know? I never thought that..." She pauses for a moment, tears welling in her eyes. "I'm sorry. We've just been through a lot lately." Her brother moves to her side quickly, putting an arm around her and drawing her in.

"We... we lost our parents in the first wave," he whispers, staring at the ground. "Haggard took us in. Gave us jobs, a roof over our head. Without him..." He lets the sentence trail off, wiping tears from his eyes. "Sorry, you don't need to hear about that. I wish there was something we could do to help you, really, but we don't even know why these things are here. Old Man Cedric keeps yelling about something he saw, but when isn't he screaming his head off?"

"They were here, you know," his sister whispers, looking up at Prudence.

"Of course they were here, but what does that have to do with anything? A few shady people don't make for an invasion of corpses." With that, the brother and sister excuse themselves for the night, thanking Pru profusely for her help. "And if you wanna know about those folks... ask Cedric, I guess. Old man's always got something to say, even if it's nonsense."

Unless anyone had anymore business, we'll assume everyone goes to sleep and wakes up in their today's post.

William wakes up nice and refreshed, and after eating breakfast and greeting his fistmates, he looks for Hope. Once he finds her, he politely asks about how her magic seemed to fare against these denizens that keep attacking the small village. "Most of my magic is arcane and is yours more of a divine nature? What spells did you try against them, and what sorts of results did you see? If we're going to run into them, I want to get an idea of what works and what doesn't..."

(OOC - DM, did we heal any hit points overnight? I'm down 2 and wondered if those were still around...)

OOC: usually, with uninterrupted sleep, you heal a small amount. How much is usually situational.

Before heading off to bed, he is sure to hit Tinker and Bliss with a cure light wound apiece. (Heal 9 and 8 respectively)

Linden wakes and prepares spells similar to the previous batch, however, he makes sure to prep some undead related stuff.

He eats a good breakfast.

Well, it seems to Bliss like it is time for a snack, and his friend Prudence is already in the kitchen, so he wanders in there.

"Hiya!" he says brightly. "Is there anything to eat in here? A hobbit gets hungry when he doesn;t get five solid meals a day."

Thinking of food makes him think of Goodberries. He asks the workers in here if they have any fresh-picked berries. He sure would be grateful for a handful.

If there are, he'll try to cast a Goodberries on them. Ley check 78 = no problem.

Thinking of casting makes him think of magic.

"Hey Miss Pru, did we ever look close at those two vials, necklace, and feather?"

Bliss will track those down if Prudence does not have them, and bring them back to Prudence to Identify.

Bliss tries to figure them out as well.

He casts his Detect Magic and a Guidance cantrip for Gargul's blessing ...

Spellcraft checks to ID 4 items: 25, 22, 19, 22!

"Jeezum Crow! Them's Good Spellcrafting!" Mookie declares as he watches his ward.

After the snack, the goodberries (hopefully), and the magic items, Bliss starts to yawn again.

"I'm tired," he declares, curling up on a flour sack by the fireplace.

He yawns again and falls back asleep.

If she can, Pru tries to find Cedric and speak with him before retiring for the night.

When Bliss comes into the kitchen, Pru smiles at him. "I'm sure we can find you something," she says. She looks at the magic items, but Bliss seems to have done a pretty good job identifying them already.

If possible, Pru just finds a comfortable, out-of-the-way place there in the kitchen to nap for what remains of the night. It's warm in there, after all, and she doesn't want to disturb her Fist-mates who have already gone to bed.

If she can't find a good spot in the kitchen, Pru heads upstairs to the rooms set aside for their group.

Cameron wakes at first light as the sun starts to show through the window. He wants to roll over and go back to sleep, allowing the aches and bruises to heal with time. But a soldier of the Mailed Fist gets no such luxury. He rolls out of bed and puts on his fresh, clean uniform and armor and belts on his sword and slings his shield. Today they would get to the bottom of the undead and find the book they had been sent to retrieve.
He heads downstairs and gathers some breakfast, cooked if it is available, cold if not. Cameron didn't survive growing up with dwarves by being picky about what he ate or bashful about getting it himself. He sits down and mulls over the stories and songs he has learned in the past few days from Helmbane and from his own trove of tales from his youth. After a little time doing that he feels prepared for the day.
Cameron will go and chat with the old man everyone calls crazy. Often the crazy do have things to tell us, they just lack the means to do so effectively or an attentive audience. Cameron brings the man a cup of coffee or tea or whatever passes for a morning beverage here and asks what it is he saw before this all happened and why everyone else finds it strange. He surely uses the word strange, because crazy people don't like to be reminded they are crazy, at least in Cameron's limited experience.

Tinker isn't one for small talk, but shrugs at the man's comment. "When I first joined the Fist, I wasn't ready for this either. That's why they train recruits! Tinker chuckles. Once. "You standing up for what you believe? Bet the Fist would love to see you at the recruiting table."

In the morning, the dwarf gets a sketchy wash and breakfast and listens to what everyone else said before getting to Sergeant Trimmack. "Where is this magic item supposed to be? Any chance these zombie creatures and recovering the item is connected?"

NIkolai takes note of the graveyard comment, thinking that's the best place to start.
He encourages Guy. "If joining the Fist is what you want, do it. They will train you and they will know soon if you are good enough. The worse thing that can happen is that they send you home. But at least you tried. You will never know if you can be a Fist member if you don't try."

Noticing thtat the back has been boarded up well, he focuses on the front. From his perch up in the rafters he adds, "Part of being in the Fist is that we actually look for things like this. To us, it is work, no different then a farmer planting crops to sell."

Carver, rested up, dons his gear, armed for the proverbial war, he heads down stairs to find breakfast.
"For some reason, I wouldn't doubt it, this mess is something a double fist would be sent to handle I think." He says softly enough only the others in the unit can hear him, and only before the sargents arrive.
He thanks Cameron for the clean up, if he failed to the night before, it'd been a long day after all.
